RE: Your favorite part of building
I really like building the fuse. I usually start with the wings and tail, so the fuse, for me is a major milestone in a build.

RE: Arf Review in the Kit Build Forum?
I personally feel that "just anyone" could be a good candidate (providing that they dont represent the views of any company, ect. ) I am just anyone, as are most all the other fellow RCUers. I think it would be a down to earth review. I dont need a professional writer with perfect grammar and spelling to tell me the things I want to know about a kit. I think that if the average guy has trouble with something, that will show us if a product is worth buying or not. Most "reviewers" are very talented and meticulous. Not common triats for the "average joe" (Im not trying to offend, just my opinion)

RE: Question of ethics . . . needle valve tool
On my webra, the high speed needle has a bolt in it so I can use a ball driver. I had the ball driver pop out, and my hand came pretty damn close to the prop. Since then, I just use the "standard" method that RCKen described. The biggest thing, is to slow down, and really focus on what you are doing. Most prop accidents happen when people are talking, frustrated (usually engine induced) or havent had a close call yet, and havent learned to truly respect that spinning meat saw on the front.

RE: Strange problem with Homie 30cc on gas/glow...
With the price/power/quality of the new smaller gas engines available, conversions are getting to be more for the sake of tinkering. Also, with 2.4 radios, one of the main advantages of gas/glow has been taken away. And with cheaper CDI units, its more tempting (at least for me) to convert to CDI (which used to be alot more money). All this has happened within the last 2 or 3 years. Gas/glow still has its place. When I tinkered with my stihl on gas glow, alot of club members were interested. Its fun doing something different.

RE:
I thought I would bring this thread back. I have a stihl 25.4cc engine. I picked it up a long time ago from a shop. I ran it this spring on gas glow, and it seemed like a strong engine. I forgot my tach that day, so no readings. It screamed with an 18-6 and it sounded strong with a 18-8. I have stared at this engine many times pondering what rpm it was actually doing. I have an XYZ CDI that was originally supposed to be for my poulan, but I cant resist the urge to test this engine. I have the ignition all set up, and by tomorrow the JB weld will be set up. I need to get a different spark plug as well. I would have just tried gas glow again, but I have been addicted to burning avgas. I just love the smell of it when it burns, and also the fact it doesnt stink up my apt. I will post a video if all goes well tomorrow.

If you need parts, I have a link on my poulan 42cc thread. I dont really have any experience with saw engines, but Im hoping to get into that this winter... If I have time... Im planing on building 2 kits and having another one on the boards by spring. It sounds like I will be living in Northern Ontario this winter, so I will have lots of time...

You're thinking of Rysuim. I have tried the glow plug powered all the time, but wont use it in a plane, cause I dont have a battery charger that can do single cell batteries. It works pretty good.

The sullivan tailwheel unit will save the rudder in the event of a hard landing. I had the stock one on mine, and I had a very hard landing, and the wire colapsed and caused the rudder to break. If I had the sullivan one, the spring probably would have saved the repair.

I use avgas and whatever oil that is available. Nobody in my area keeps penzoil, it has to be ordered. I havent had any problems. On my poulan, I have several tanks through it, and no signs of carbon or fouling of any type. If the penzoil keeps you happy, then use it. I bet the only thing that changed, was the label.

I found that putting the case in the oven for a bit will help with removal of the bearings and shaft. I heat it at 350-400 for a few mins. Just like with a glow engine.

RE: Terra firma 3 SSE 0
About the wings, the damage doesnt really show up in the pics. I took them with my phone. Most of the wing ribs were damaged, the servo mounts were broke out. It actually hit so hard that the switch for the RX was turned off! Im probably not going to build another. There is a guy in the club that has one for sale. I will probably buy it. Im going to go gas next year, so dont want to spend too much on glow planes right now. I will just rob the receiver out of my kadet. I also discovered that the crankshaft was bent, and the carb is buggered. I have since used my "parts engines" to supply a new carb and crankshaft. Only problem is that the carb is too big and I might have trouble tuning. I ran it on the bench today, and it seemed alright. I figure by tues or wed, I should be back in business. I would just fly the kadet, but it really isnt that much fun to fly.

Terra firma 3 SSE 0
Well, I finally did it! I crashed my Sig Something Extra to the point where its not fixable. This has been the 3rd crash this season, and I gotta say it was a doozie! I was flying around doing my usual snaproll extravaganza when I decided to try a 4 point roll (Im not very good at them) I did one successfully and got confident (read cocky) in my abilities, so I was trying to do an outside loop with a snaproll at the bottom (which was going to be 10 feet high) Needless to say, I used the wrong direction of snap (inside not outside) then i freaked out and BAM! right into terra firma. Here are the pics. It is not repairable. I had the ceremonial burning after I dug my gear out of it. There was a huge crater where the engine was, and it took a good pull to get it out. Other than the kit, I think I only ruined my receiver. The 5th channel no longer works.

RE: Dupli-Color Chrome paint is not fuel proof
The big thing with "spray paint" is the cure time. I noticed with tremclad, it states that the finish doesnt really cure until about a week. I bet it isnt fully cured for about a month or so. And that probably depends on temp and humidity.

RE: Gas Engine Recommendation
It would be better to use a bigger engine, and cruise around at half throttle, then to have a small engine screaming the whole time. I personally think its annoying. Plus, the 40cc gassers dont weigh all that much more.

RE: Question about gas to oil mixture........
One thing with a gasser is: DO NOT go rich of peak. set the high end for max rpm and keep it there. Gassers have a carb with a regulating pump. Kinda like using a perry pump on a glow engine. It will not go lean in flight. Going rich on the high end will only foul the plug and leave carbon deposits on the piston and ring. This will cause more problems down the road. The low end will affect the high end. On initial startup, set the high end so its close, and then work on low end. Once the low end is set, then the high end will need to be adjusted again. With a gasser, a little goes a long way. Happy tuning, andrew

RE: Project poulan
Thanks for the links. Im awaiting the approval from the website. It seems that I did go a bit overboard with the exhaust. I also need to advance the timing of the transfer ports. I think I might do that tonight. I would like to turn the case down for more compression, but I dont have a lathe. I do have plenty of power for the project I am going to do, but more never hurt anyone.... If I get the mods done, I might get to run the engine tomorrow. there will be a video, if performance is increased. One thing I dont really get, is why this thing is a dog with the 16-8. It should have improved. The more I think of it, the more it frustrates me. I dont think I can fit a 16" prop on the plane im going to build, but I would be happy if I could get 7500 or better with the 16-8. Is there a big difference between the poulans with the bolt on mufflers and the ones with the springs? Word removed by moderator

I didnt run it for an hour straight. I ran it for about 10 mins, shut down, let it cool, then started it again. I really wish I had a plane ready for it. It would be much better to break it in in the air. I guess thats this winter's project... Depending on the day, I might run the engine again tomorrow. I took a different intake manifold, and drilled it out to match the same size as the carb. The other one was just a stock manifold. It might make a bit of a difference.

RE: Project poulan
I test ran the engine again today. With the 16-8 rpm dropped to 7000. It seems like I lost some torque with the increased duration. Also, the ring needs to seat more. I put the 16-6 back on and ran the engine at about 3500-4000 rpm for about 30 mins. I then tested full throttle again, and rpms were up to 7800. I think most of that improvement was from the exhaust modification. I let the engine run for about an hour total today at low throttle (mainly to keep the heat down) and on my last rpm check, I was getting 7998rpm! I think with a bit more run time, I will have got the 8000 rpm that I want. I have decided to leave the transfer ports alone, and am going to run the engine as is. I got the target power that I need. Once I can afford it, Im going to order an XYZ CDI for this engine. I think that rpms should increase as well, cause the heavy flywheel wont be holding it back. I also still need to get a header pipe made up, and a velocity stack. That probably wont happen for a week or two. For now, Im going to modify one of the other cases for EI use and get one of the flywheels center cut out.

RE: Project poulan
Well, its really late, and I cant really sleep cause Im thinking about the mods to this engine too much. I just realized that my initial test with this engine was with a JXF 16-8 prop. After the new ring I havent compared it with the same prop or gave you guys any "real world" improvements. Tomorrow, Im going to try the 16-8. I also fixed my muffler. I also added another tube. (i think it was too much back pressure with only one tube) So far the mods for this engine include: 1) bigger carb (WA19A "27/64" ) 2) made a 1/2" hole in the muffler to increase flow 3) Removed head and backplate gasket and used thinner ones (that three bond stuff doesnt work very well) 4) Increased exhaust port size and timing (by using thinner gasket intake was also affected) the timing is: Intake open 299 degrees Intake closed 62 degrees Exhaust open 107 Exhaust closed 255 Intake duration 123 degrees Exhaust duration 164 5) Frank bowman ring Now for my question... I checked the intake duration against my stihl and the POULAN is at 123 and the STIHL is 116. But the stihl intake opens about 7 degrees sooner. Should I advance the timing of the intake any more? Has anyone ever messed with transfer port timing? If so, how did you measure the duration and if I advance it too far, how will it affect the engine? thanks alot, andrew Here is the short video from today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luLYADYo3Ek

RE: Project poulan
I recieved the Frank Bowman ring today, and got a chance to test the first engine. Power increased by quite a bit. I was getting a good 7700 rpm with the apc 16-6. I know the ring is still seating, so I didnt really go all out. I would like to increase the duration of the intake, but am afraid of ruining this engine. I guess I could assemble one of the other engines, and try out a few mods. I blueprinted my stihl 25cc the other night, and the exhaust on this engine is about the same as the stihl. The intake is about 10 degrees less duration than the stihl, so I kinda want to change it so that it matches the stihl. Then I will test it, and if I feel it needs more power, then I will look at the transfer ports. I also need that velocity stack, cause there is a bit of fuel spraying out the carb. I think I will make an "el-cheapo" one tomorrow. I have a small video that im uploading, and will post as soon as its on youtube.
