RE: 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk - Build
Hi Rica, The washout on the Apache Chipmunks certainly works well. In particular you notice stalls are gentler and slow speed handling is much improved. I don't have a comparison between the same plane without the washout and these ones so I cannot give a direct comparison but these Chipmunks handle very well. Regards Ari

RE: 1/5 Pepsi Chipmunk - Build
Thanks for the kind comments The Apache Chipmunks all have tabs on the ribs that ensure the correct washout. Yes, I'm quite familiar with MVVS engines because I distribute them in Australia and have several installed in my own planes. I suspect the 30cc will be a good choice for the Pepsi because of its compact size and light weight. My first Pepsi had a G38 which was a pretty good combination but took a bit of planning to fit inside the cowl. I have built all three of them so far and each has been a notch better than the last. I see Mike Clewes (the owner of Apache) has listed the business up for sale because he wants to retire. I can only hope that any new owners will be as dedicated to the modelling community as Mike has been. I started on the Cessna earlier but as expected, the house move put a stop to that project. Hopefully, I can start that again soon. This is where I had gotten to

RE: Evolution 58cc two broken rings
There are no separate liners in the cylinder head. The cylinder is a single unit. I tend to agree with the suggestion that it may have to do with heating. MVVS (who make those engines) also recommend 32:1 oil for the first gallon or so. I'm not suggesting the 40:1 ratio was the culprit but it's a good idea to follow manufacturer's recommendations upfront. These are powerful engines which makes it even more important to ensure there is adequate cooling and lubrication is sufficient (no lean running and recommended oil ratio)

RE: 26 gas16/8 or 17/10 prop
Jeff, Even though I suspect a 26cc might be marginal in a relatively draggy plane like a Decathlon of this size, you should get some decent RPM from your engine with a 16x8 prop. One of the most common mistakes made are using restrictive Pitts mufflers that eat up a lot of power, especially static RPM. What muffler do you have on your engine? MVVS have a rather large side muffler (3270) A properly tuned 26cc with a Mejzlik 16x8 (or 18x6) should give you high-7,000 static rpm with that muffler. Expect to lose several hundred RPM from that with a tight Pitts muffler You seem to get best performance from this engine when you prop it light, or in the high 7k rpm range Here is the reported performance for this engine: http://www.mvvs-australia.com.au/gasengines.htm#MVVS_26_IFS/RC Second thing to consider is tuning Have you peak tuned the engine on both needles? I hope this helps a bit.

RE: Eneloop batteries for ignition?
ORIGINAL: WRK Anyone using Eneloop batteries for ignition? Wonder how these work for Ign and also wondering if they are good enough for flight packs?
I use Eneloop packs almost exclusively on my ignitions. I like the long charge retention (>80% pr year) and they are easy to manage in low current draw situations. For 50cc and smaller, I also use them for flight packs but most of the time use two separate packs, each connected into separate ports on the receiver. I don't know the availability of them in the US but here in Australia, you can buy individual cells with solder lugs on them which makes it cheap and easy to make up your own packs.

RE: Where are the 40cc Gas Engines???
ORIGINAL: earlwb In my opinion the 40cc engine displacement size is being squeezed out by the 35cc,36cc engine on the lower end and the 50cc, 55cc, 56cc and 60cc engines on the other side. A 40cc engine tends to weigh about the same as a 50cc engine too. Then the 35cc size engines tend to have about the same if not better performance than a 40cc engine has too. So it makes it tough to choose one nowadays. Fortunately there are still a few 40cc size engines around, but I expect them to all but disappear in the next couple of years.
This certainly used to hold true where for example the old JC Engines 40cc was basically a downsized 50cc (53cc) but weighed pretty much the same. These days, there are a few offerings of true 40cc as mentioned above in this thread. Weight-wise, it varies greatly. The MVVS 40cc (beam mounted) mentioned in a previous post weighs 1,451gram (without ignition while the 50cc weighs 1,560grams and the 30cc 930grams I personally have a 40cc installed in a 96" Rearwin Speedster that I use for aero towing and have found towing 5 - 6m gliders no problem with that combination (on a 22x8 Mejzlik prop and stock muffler) The tow plane weighs a tad over 7Kg In comparison, the 30cc mentioned likes 18x10 props, the 40cc likes 22x10 props and the 50cc works well on 23x10 props

In the first place, I cannot see why this thread is in this forum ...... it's the Gas Engines forum, not the "Wing Bolts Forum" or "Let's Beat up Horizon Hobbies Forum" ..... Secondly, I have personally had both the H9 Taylorcrafts and both have been quite solid planes which I have used for some reasonably advanced aerobatics without any problems. Regardless, I would never fly a new plane without checking some basic points like wing attachments etc

A good many years ago when I bought my first decent computer (a 386), I ordered it from a Chinese fella in Los Angeles. Before I could receive it, I had to sign a dossier of papers where I undertook never to ship it to any of a long list of countries. At the top of the list were the old USSR countries, China, Taiwan etc etc. I couldn't even show it to anyone from any of those countries. Guess what, the system board and several other components were made in Taiwan and even had that fact printed on it. [:)] Guess I'm somewhat cynical on all this nonsense.

RE: Your list of hightest quality engines?
Interesting thread indeed and most interesting for the fact that it hasn't been the usual magnet for dealers to come out with the usual "my brand is best" Banter aside, claiming that one "brand" is better than another is highly subjective and should probably be seen as such. Even the most touted manufacturers have come out with duds and the less respected ones have made decent engines. My personal view is that the "best engine" is one we gain confidence in after a while for trouble free and reliable service. For me, it is one of a pair of G62 Lite that I bought from Ralph Cunningham and now powers my Extra 300 flawlessly

RE: DLE 55 Can a timing change or new ig. help the low end burble?
Rhino, if you set your engine for "fast idle" and then gradually lean the low needle, you will see the RPM gradually increase. Tune for max RPM (without touching the throttle) and then back off by some 1/8 turn. After that, tune for max RPM with the high needle at full throttle and again, back off some 1/8 turn after finding the max RPM point. This should minimize the burble but probably won't completely eliminate it. Just make sure the engine is at full operating temperature when you tune it.

It was very hard to turn over so I decided to disassemble it and see what happened. The bottom end was full of black crud. I cleaned it out and it seems to be a lot better. I will try it again tomorrow. They don't lube it at the factory with graphite do they?
These are probably aluminum deposits. A common problem in these engines is the crank rubbing up against the back cover. Loosen the back cover bolts and if the engine spins freely, the end cap on the crank shaft hasn't been fitted properly and is rubbing. Easy to fix with either Loctite 609 or in extreme cases, a spot of Tig weld
