RE: Transmitter case foam affects Spektrum 2.4
ORIGINAL: iiievolution Hello The other day I went to the flying field with Zak after a 3 month summer break from model flying ( too hot in Cyprus ). Prepared everything, started turbine and proceeded for a range check. I was quite surprised to see that my spektrum setup failed the range check. I was getting only 20 paces ( usually I get about 60 paces ) with hundreds of fades, 119 frame losses and 22 holds. Batteries were new freshly charged. I use Graupner MX-22 Tx with Spektrum JR DM9 and AR9000 RX. This was the first ever issue I have had since first using this setup 2 years ago. I then tried a brand new module that I had with me ( same model ) and again I only got 15-20 paces in all directions with hundreds of losses. I also tried several binds with both modules but again the same results. Feeling disappointed and frustrated because I now had a mystery to solve, I decided to pack up and go home. As I removed the module from the Tx I happened to notice that there were a few tiny dark grey particles in the coax. These were also present in the Tx aerial connector. It was obvious that these were foam particles from the foam padding in the Graupner MX-22 Tx case. I keep my Tx, module and aerial disconnected when in the case. So I cleaned the connectors and told Zak lets have another try, knowing deep down that this was probably more than a long shot [:-] AND...........you guessed it!! We got 60 paces straight away with zero fades, frame losses and holds. We then did extensive range checking with turbine running and various directions etc etc and all with zero losses. We proceeded to fly and all went smoothly. After landing we checked the flight log and we had only 4 fades on one receiver and everything else zero. The only thing that I can attribute my problem to is these foam particles from the Tx case. If this a known problem/issue then sorry for the long story but I felt the obligation to share my experience in the interest of safety. Paul
i was told a few years ago that the gray foam is manufactured with some graphite in it for some reason unknown to me.....quite a few years ago i had a 72 mhz receiver wrapped in this gray foam, and i was having intermittent radio problems......i removed the gray foam and wrapped the receiver in the yellow foam and the problem instantly went away.....graphite is conductive and the stray pieces of gray foam might or might not be the cause of your problem.....so it might be worthwhile to ditch the gray foam and replace it with the yellow foam......it's feasible that tiny particles of the gray foam near your connections might be wreaking havoc with your radio.....just my 2 cents..... richard

My P-60 powered Nano is fine.........37 flights on it and no hint of any problem such as you describe......Sounds like it may be a condition specific to the T-500 turbine..... Richard

RE: Reaction ARF - PST/BTE All-Composite Sport Jet
ORIGINAL: skywarrior Hi, I am going larger on my engine size to the 120 SX , whilst the Reaction flies fine on the S/Sport I would like a little more punch. At 28lb out of the box this would make 1:1 a very straight forward affair. I will probably down the top rpm in the early flights but the question is although the 120 SX chart shows 1lb at idle does anyone have actual knowledge if this means no speed brake required as i noticed the larger variety of engines seem to fit this. Thanks David
to skywarrior, i have a P-120 in my reaction arf........i don't have the speed brake installed.....the idle thrust of the P-120 causes no problems during landing............ RE: P80
ok, 2-3mm is roughly 1/8".....i have 5 jetcat engines and all of them came NIB, and the temp probe (thermocouple) is inserted from 1/4" to 5/16" into the tail cone.....( 6-8mm ).....is the depth really making that much difference in the temperature measurement?....you would assume that the more the thermocouple is in, that you would get a higher temperature reading.....but that's not the case with my engines.....just thought i would throw my observations into the mix here on this thread... richard

RE: Reaction ARF - PST/BTE All-Composite Sport Jet
to rcguy (dave)....did you get the preformed lead nose weight with your kit?.....it weighs 20 oz.....with all nicad batteries in the nose, and the preformed nose weight, mine balanced perfectly at the aft most position.....at first i was a little intimidated with all of that weight up front in the nose to get it to balance, but as soon as it lifted off on the 1st flight.....well, it was perfect......the aft CG position is great.....i use a P-120 in mine, and it's a great combo.....i would like to see a Reaction ARF with a 60 inch wingspan, and a 2 piece wing, suitable for a P-60 size turbine.....i am the guy that started the removable tail feathers thing for this model on RCU.....i had to make mine removable to get it into my little vehicle......you'll love this model, i think it flys better than the wood version of bruce's.....
