RE: Installing a smoke system.
Usually an engine will consume about the same amount of smoke oil as fuel. AV8TOR

RE: Gas prices
Another sad thing about it is that the gas stations themselves, which do all the "dirty work" of actually selling the product to the public, only make a few cents a gallon. That's why all the real "service" stations that actually sold gas AND did automotive repairs went out of business. The "mini-markets" can survive because they make their money on the convenience store items, and since they need a clerk anyway, they sell gas too even though the profit margin is so low as to be almost non existent. RE: Gas prices
ORIGINAL: captinjohn
ORIGINAL: 049flyer Considering all of the risk involved in finding oil in the most difficult parts of the world, drilling wells through thousands of feet of earth and rock, transporting the crude to a refinery on the other side of the continent, refining the oil, shipping the product to the retail stations and finally pumping out and into your tank, all the while contending with an incredible amount of government and environmental regulations, it's surprising the oil is as cheap as it is. I consider it a bargain at even $5.00 per gallon. You can transport yourself and your family 20 miles or more down the road in air conditioned comfort protected from the elements and listening to whatever you please as if you were at home in your Lazy Boy, all on 1 gallon of gas which today in Texas runs about $3.50. Would you walk 20 miles for that same $3.50? Would you ride a bike 20 miles for 3.50? Is there any other form of personal transportation that you think is more efficient or cheaper? 12 years ago I had a Suburban and it cost me $35.00 to fll the tank, now I have a Ford Focus and it cost me $35.00 to fill the tank. I see no problem, I just changed my lifestyle a little and the problem goes away. Do you really NEED that Suburban, SUV or pick-up? Do you really NEED the boat, travel trailer or 4 wheeler? Do you really NEED that trailer for your 30% airplane? Some of us are spoiled, and prefer to blame others for choices we have made. Change your lifestyle a bit and move on. If you think the big bad oil companies are ripping you off then buy some of their stock. Maybe you will make some big money.
It sounds like you want us to sell everything except those .049 powered airplanes & fly them in our back yard. It is simple...GAS IS NOT A BARGIN.....
It is not a matter of what a person "needs" or "wants", it is a matter of being held hostage to the pricing dictated by the oil companies, and not having a choice. Choice after all, is what freedom is all about, though true freedom is very hard to come by in this world of ours now. Besides, you totally neglect the fact that while a person can perhaps "bite the bullet" and drive cheaper cars and give up their RV's and other gasoline using toys, they CANNOT avoid the high prices of virtually everything else they need, that are caused by high fuel prices. Sorry to say buy your view is very limited, typical of many Americans, and basically the crux of the problem. If people understood all the dynamics, they would be more upset, and perhaps, perhaps, even try to do something about it. Here's another point... besides the gasoline taxes, how much do you think your basic income tax rate is based on fuel prices?? Well, calculate how much money it takes to keep a fleet of airplanes flying over a fuel sucking aircraft carrier with 5000 people on it in the Mediterranean Sea, and think backwards from there.... RE: Walbro Diaphrams
Yeah, especially on e-bay, but in other markets too, you have to watch for those shipping and handling charges. I have seen things on e-bay sell for 15 bucks, with 30 bucks shipping and handling!! It is pretty hard to find those diaphragms for less than a couple of bucks a piece, which really isn't bad anyway.... We did one time find 10 for 10 bucks, but it was a misprint and after buying them the buyer didn't want to let them go for that price. AV8TOR
ORIGINAL: Granpooba Isn't it amazing that it was just noted that the good ole USA has increased its oil production up ONE million barrels a DAY ! And yet no lowering of prices. Simply amazing how US citizens just keep sitting around and taking all of the corruption in business and government.
I know, I agree completely. They are like sheep being led to a slaughter. They just don't seem to understand that when the price of gas goes up, EVERYTHING follows. From postage stamps to food, rubber, plastic; basically anything and everything a person buys depends on fuel for either it's production, it's distribution, etc. The quality of life in the states has been on a steady downward slide since the early 70's due mostly to oil prices, and the slope is getting steeper all the time. RE: Gas prices
My father always said he figured my generation would have a revolution due to horribly declining freedoms, quality of life, abuses, oppression, etc. And he was a very conservative guy!! I hope I live to see a revolution, but I really don't think it is going to happen because the govt. is just too big and powerful now. When anyone starts making enough nasty noises, the govt. either kills them or brands them "radicals" or "militia", and everyone is then glad to see them squashed. I don't understand it.... During the contrived gas crisis in the 70's, people were outraged and ready to revolt. Now, everyone pretty much just accepts it and goes on with life. Or is that just another example of how the powers that be can manipulate us and popular opinion? Personally, I was really proud of the French when they publicly rebelled against the change in their work week hours. But sadly, that is just an isolated case of the public standing up for themselves, and would never be permitted to pass in the USA. Ok, I'm "out of here".... Said too much for my own good already. RE: Gas prices
Well it all makes sense. Oil is a limited resource. There is no logic in high volume sales for the oil companies and countries. Better to sell less oil at a much higher price. Better and longer lasting profits. It makes perfect business sense really. What we need to do, once again, is figure a way not to need it. Ethanol, natural gas, hydrogen, biofuels.... there are ways to do it but as I said, the oil companies literally will not permit it. The common person just can't and/or doesn't quite realize the incredible amount of money involved, and the incredible power wielded by the oil concerns. The oil companies make billions and billions of dollars. Most people have no real concept of how much a billion dolllars is.... A BILLION seconds is 32 years. So if you had a billion dollars in one dollar bills, and you started counting them at the rate of one a second non stop day and night, it would take you 32 years to count your billion dollars! Put another interesting way, you could buy 1 million 1/3 scale model airplanes if they cost 1000 dollars each and you had a billion dollars to spend. AV8TOR

Sorry, but I LOVE my 500 horsepower 454 V/8 and my 350 horsepower 350. Raw, exciting, power. Love it. That's what makes me so mad about the gas price situation, and the poor quality of the gas. Cars with these engines used to be feasible in the states, and too much fun!! Though to many it is a "joke" now, America is supposed to be "Free". Why should we be forced to drive crappy little, underpowered cars? Now someone is going to say, pollution, conservation, safety, responsiblity, etc. Bah humbug! Ya know, I presently live in Northern Mexico. Often times people here ask me if there is corruption in the USA, and generally assume there is none. OF COURSE our govt. is in on it. Anyone in the government that isn't directly profiting from the gas situation, is being bought and paid for by the oil company concerns. We've all seen the different movies, and perhaps even identified with the characters.... What would one person do to another for a million bucks? Lie, steal, cheat, kill? If someone from the oil companies right this very minute came to you and said, "Just keep your mouth shut, or vote a certain way on an upcoming issue, and we'll give you a million tax free dollars", what would you do???? You would take it and do as told, just as our politicians do.... Nowadays, you couldn't afford not to take the offer. A million bucks doesn't even guarantee a nice retirement anymore. Sad but true... RE: Gas prices
I am old enough to clearly remember the contrived gas crisis of the 70's. My father happened to own a gas station at the time, and I remember the gas delivery guys telling us of tanker drivers told to dispose of entire tanker loads of gas to keep the so called "crisis" going. Gas stations were going without gas, while the powers that be struggled with what to do with the surplus of gas created by the contrived shortage, which of course was designed to raise prices. During that time, I once visited my sister in California. She asked me one day, "If you don't have anything else planned, could you try to fill my two cars up with gas today??" It took me 8 hours to do so. She later said, "Dammit, I don't CARE what they have to charge me; just give me the gas I need!!!!" I told her "Well, when they figure they have everyone in the mental place you are right now, and ready to accept whatever they charge, the so called "gas crisis" will come to an end." And it did... OPEC equals the very definition of collusion. Collusion is rampant in the states too, but they say they can't prove it. (Of course not, everyone is paid off. How quiet would you remain for a million bucks? For a billion? Petty cash to the oil concerns.) Only way out of it is ethanol or some other renewable fuel source, but I don't think they'll ever let it happen until every drop of oil is gone..... AV8TOR
ORIGINAL: skip1320
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey As long as we keep buying it they wont lower the price, it's pretty simple
+5,, I said start planting corn way before it was mainstream news,Just a motorhead thing
Oh boy, while I'm in 100% agreement with you, you've opened a can of worms with this post, and are likely to get a lot of negative comments. That is because while ethanol is a very, very good option to our fuel problems, the propaganda supported and circulated by the oil companies against it makes this a stormy issue. People think that if we go ethanol, there will be food shortages and food price increases. They just don't understand the millions of acres of land that can be farmed and presently aren't used. The government even pays farmers to not plant crops sometimes. (I personally know several of these farmers myself.) I could fly you over thousands and thousands of acres of farms that have been closed down here in Arizona, because the farmers just couldn't make enough to keep going and went bankrupt. All that, as well as millions of others like it, as well as millions of acres of never farmed land, could be used for ethanol crops. And the plants would consume carbon dioxide and create oxygen. Brazil went ethanol clear back when the oil companies screwed us the first time in the early 70's and are doing fine with it. None of the horrors the naysayers predict about ethanol have come to pass in Brazil's multi-decade use of it. Sure, there would be some "growing pains" while equipment got properly updated to use it, but it wouldn't take long and is far, far from impossible. But how long do you think all the execs of the oil companies could live on steak and lobster and buy politicians if we didn't need their product any more?? We're talking an industry of billions and billions of dollars that is stronger than any force in human history. Do you think they'll quietly let that die? While many people were/are starving and struggling with the financial crisis, the oil companies posted unbelievable, record, billion dollar profits. Isn't there something just wrong about that??? AV8TOR

RE: Tanaka 21cc conversion ?
It looks like a nice engine to convert; somewhat like an Echo actually. I don't make a backplate mount for engines like these. I just put studs in the four crankcase holes, and mount the engine directly to the firewall. Sometimes it is a bit of a pain to get to the nuts inside the fuselage behind the firewall, but it does save some weight and the hassle of making a mounting plate with counterbored screws mounting the plate to the engine. RE: Tanaka 21cc conversion ?
Many two stroke engines don't have reed valves. They are what's called piston ported, with the piston opening and closing the intake port, as well as the exhaust and transfer ports as in a reed valve engine. Works fine, and actually tend to make slightly more power than a reed valve two stroke at higher rpms. AV8TOR

I too was always taught that it was "electric motor" and "gas or diesel engine". However, I think that as often happens with a living language, "motor" has been used so often and commonly to mean an engine, that it is now accepted as being proper. Personally, I still say "motor" for electric and "engine" for internal combustion, but that's just me.... On the flip side, I have never heard of an "Electric Engine"!! AV8TOR

RE: Problems when inverted
Yeah! [;)] As to the other comments, the Walbro is indeed an all position carb. However others have noticed as well that if the carb is mounted on the aircraft/engine so that the metering diaphragm is in a horizontal position, high "G" loads can cause a momentary change in mixture. The Walbro is an "all position" carb, but not necessarily an "all "G" loading" carb. The only thing that will give you a perfect mixture in any and every possible condition is fuel injection. (Maybe.) AV8TOR
