RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Yes, I would say that is normal at full throttle with those packs. It's all about how much amperage you're pulling with that engine/battery/prop combo. Do you have a Wattmeter to hook up inline between the battery and the ESC? I don't have one of those engines, but at full throttle with a 10-4 APC "E" prop I'm pulling about 34 amps. I don't need anywhere near that amount of power to keep it in the air, so my 2100 maH batteries easily last 10 minutes. Another thing you can do with some of the ESCs is to program them for a "soft" cutoff, so they modulate the power down when the battery voltage gets close to 9v. Then you have some warning and don't have to dead stick it in. Some ESCs also have a "brake" feature, where I believe they use battery voltage to keep the prop from windmilling when the throttle stick is all the way closed in flight. This would be a drain on the battery and would shorten your flight time. Usually this can be programmed out. It's real important to know how much amperage you're pulling when using lipo packs---too much and you can at the very least wreck them, or at worst they'll catch fire. Good luck.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
BZguy: Ah Ha! I thought you were using an 11x7 prop. Now it all makes sense. Last night I ran an 11x5.5 and got it down to 37 amps; still too high. Awesome thrust though. I only let it do that for a couple of seconds, and when I glanced at the watts it was in the order of 390 or some equally high number. How do you like the performance with the 10x5 E prop? Thanks for checking for me.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
HI BZGuy: Just finished my Yak and went with your recommendation on the motor---Hacker A30-22s. I put on the 11x7E prop and have an X-30 controller. I use a TP 2100 3-cell powerlight or super light or whatver they call it---it's a 50A max burst discharge rate in any case. Two quick q's: Did you say you ran the above equipment? Can you tell me your amp draw? I pulled the throttle back when it hit 45 amps so I wouldn't blow anything up. The X-30 is limited to 30 amps, I believe, and the motor to 28 or 30. The X-30 has a default cutoff voltage for 3-cell lipos of 8.3 volts---that's considerably less than the 9 volts that TP says is the min voltage under a load. I called Hacker and they said the controller is set at that because at 9 volts you can get nuisance cutoffs when you don't really need to stop flying. Do you have an opinion? I bought a couple of other E-props to try (all are APC)---10x7 and 11x5.5 . Thanks for your thoughts. Andrew

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Scoubidou, Is that a K&S cannister? And if so, which one? The inlet diameter on the ones I found weren't 30mm, which is what I thought the Super 80 needs. Also, where are you putting your smoke tank---isn't the cannister tunnel about the only place? Thanks!

RE: Great Planes 41" YAK 54 Elevator Issues
Thanks for your great info on this plane---I totally would've just flown it with no reinforcement whatsoever had I not learned from your experience. Probably would also have put in the lower powered Rimfire too. In retrospect I'm not so sure my iron-on CF reinforced with CA is the way to go in this case. Not sure how I'd get that inbetween the cross-pieces (ribs). I was thinking of laying it flat along the sheeting, but that wouldn't have nearly as much strength as a hard piece on edge along the spars like you did. I'm going to order the Hacker---for $15-20 extra sounds like it's well worth it. Never a bad thing to have more power with equal weight!

RE: Great Planes 41" YAK 54 Elevator Issues
I didn't know of another way to subscribe to the thread without typing something, so I just did the dots to avoid the usual dumb blather that escapes from my keyboard. However, now that I'm here...on your CF reinforcements---they are stiff pieces of CF, right? I have some floppy iron-on CF that becomes rigid when you put CA on it. I'd rather use that and then not have to do too much to the wood to get it to fit on smoothly. What do you think? Is one stronger than the other? Thanks.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Bzguy: I know you like the Hackers, but what do you think about using the Rimifre 35-30-1450 vs the 1250 Rimfire that Capt. G is using? The higher Kv Rimfire is rated virtually the same as the Hacker a30-22s, and weighs the same amount. I am pretty new to e-flying and am trying to figure out all the specs, but at first glance it looks like the larger 35-30-1450 will come closer to the Hacker performance than the 1250, for the same price as the 1250. Also, when you put the CF on the stab, did you just sandwich the existing wood between two pieces of CF? Thanks!

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Capt. G---Howz your performance with the larger Rimfire motor in terms of pulling out of a Hover? What percentage power is it taking to hover, and how fast can you pull up and out of it as you advance the throttle? Thanks.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Hi John: I just went to one of those online conversion websites. It says that 319 mm is 12.6 inches. Isn't that a little short for the stab tube? I measured my original one, seems like it was closer to 17 inches. Just checking. Andrew

Base-loaded Antennas
Hi Danny: I wanted to get your thoughts on using a Dean's mini base-loaded receiver antenna, in general. I've used them in the past on various FM / PCM receivers but am now wanting to use one on a 33% gasser. It has been no problem in the past and in fact I prefer them because they're easy to hide, but I'm not sure about using them on the gasoline-engined plane. I've never suffered any loss of range in previous installations. Thanks for your thoughts.

OS #8 vs A-5 Glow Plugs
To all: I believe I've read someplace that you actually get more power with a cooler glow plug than a hotter one. I am flying an OS .15 LA in a racer that uses 15% nitro fuel. We fly laps, and of course the pressure is on to always lean out the engine "just one more click..." I've been running an OS #8 with acceptable results, but I wonder if there is any point in trying the A5 since its a cooler running plug. Any theories or suggestions? Just looking for any advantage I can find... If there is already a thread in this forum that I've missed, please feel free to point it out. Thanks!

RE: Re-drilling CF Props?
Thanks. Actually I got it wrong----the used prop is drilled for a BME 100 and I have a ZDZ Super 80. I know the Super 80 doesn't share the same bolt pattern with the older version 80.

RE: Re-drilling CF Props?
Thx for the info. I'm thinking of getting a used prop drilled out for a 3w, and filling the holes. Then I'd drill it out for my ZDZ. I have no idea if the bolt pattern is close or not.

Re-drilling CF Props?
I think I already know the answer to this, but I just have to ask: is it possible to take a Carbon Fiber prop that has been drilled for another engine, fill in the holes, and re-drill it for my engine? Would be nice to buy a used prop but of course not worth it if that's a bad idea. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer. My shields are up...

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
I wonder if anybody watching this thread has any Decibel readings on their ZDZ-80's? I'm trying to decide whether to go with a cannister or the Supersonic muffler. I understand that some IMAC contests have noise limits. Does anyone have any experience with a 3-bladed prop on their 80 RV-J? Thanks!

Nice pics, and nice looking installation. I notice that nobody seems to have any baffling around their engines---is this just because the radial-style cowl has so much airflow? Thanks.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Did you give up on the cannister due to the wait involved for the flange (for the Super 80)? Or did you determine that the cannister you have just doesn't have enough volume and a bigger one won't fit in the tunnel? BTW, which cannister do you have? Thanks!
