RE: 100cc Extra 300 ARF QB
depends on your flying. are you flying IMAC? do you need to be quiet? if your primarely flying 3D, I would go with standard mufflers. you'll be adding a pound or so with cans and no noticable gain in power. if the plane was liter it would be a tougher decision. but at 29-30lbs I would keep it as lite as possible. steve.

key is finding a happy spot. I would definately put up with a little shaking over having a dead stick. another thing I do is listen for the rpm drop when removing the glow stick. the richer it is the more your rpms will drop. steve

most saitos come sloppy rich on the low end. once its broken in. try leaning your low end needle. It should smooth out a bunch. steve

RE: AVGAS... Anyone with experience???
It seems a lot of people think. if they can get a high octane gasoline. they will get a increase in performance. octane ratings are only a measurement of a gasolines ability to resist knocking. or premature ignition. If your engines not knocking or rattling from preignition. you probably don't need it. your just making your fuel less volatile. I was talking to slimeline (having problems with mufflers falling apart) and he mentioned using high octane fuel that it might "smooth" the engine out some. DA recommends using regular or 87 octane. I would say save your money. unless your engine runs better on it. mine don't seem to. I know this isn't why AV8TOR brought up the subject of avgas. it was more of a maintenance thing. steve

RE: DA85 MUFFLER ISSUES
my last 2 slimelines had the support bracket. didn't help much. both of them were version2. I heard they just started testing this 3rd version. I've been waiting 2 months for my replacement. if it wasn't freezing out I would of purchased another tbm as back-up already. Slimeline said everyone who has been waiting on their replacements will be receiving theirs first. some have been waiting longer than me. I think I talked to Dave? before who fabricates the mufflers. he noted that he had the same problems with the big Sachs single when they first came out. steve.

as long as your not too nose heavy it will come in fine. and it has no bad stalling tendencies. just don't make it a brick. the one nice thing about edges is the flat front wing. much harder to stall than other acrobatic planes. steve.

with an alum. backplate you would think it would hold up to glow applications. the plastic cone does not 'seem' liter than any other in this size. its a shame you can't use them for glow.

30+ hrs on my tx and still holding up. 4 5245's and 225 on throttle. no problems. hatch getting beat up a little bit. second set of wheel pants. which are bolted on now. and don't bother getting any spinners from EF they are junk. went through 2. and my friend Jimmie D's blew up on maiden take-off. there's a pic of the tool he made for me to get the wing bolts off and on. works very well. his is the red one btw. steve

RE: Plane for a Brison 2.4 ??
Others have mounted the 2.4 in WHs baby edge but IMO its waay too much overkill. the plane is designed around a 1.20 glow. It only has 960 sq inches on the wings. the others I mentioned average 1100- 1200 cubes. you need surface area when going gas. their heavier. I would go glow on the baby edge. probably os 160. for great power. the Brison does well up to 14lbs. steve

any of the Great Planes 27% planes. yak, extra330, cap, edge and the suk. also aeroworks makes 2 35cc planes extra 260 and a extra 300. horizon has the 260 also. just off the top of my head. I have the GP cap and the 2.4 pulls very well in it with a mej 20x8. steve

RE: DA85
a lot of the 85's develope a leak at the jug gasket. they have been playiing around with different gasket material and sealants to correct this. I should get mine back in a few days. being a big single piston engine it has its vibration issues. I've gone through some mufflers, had my carb bolts loosen, (which I heard they are replacing the alum. ones with steel.) and had to add extra cowl mounts cause mine kept falling off. (probably just my planes design) It does start up perfect every time. never had a dead stick. and tons of power for a 33% plane. steve

RE: Da 85 pitts muffler keeep breaking.
I've had tbm's break, and I'm on my 2nd slimeline. my first slimeline had smoke on it. this one doesn't. I'm gonna keep my fingers crossed. both companies took care of me . slimeline keeps making improvements to help with longevity. but DA insisted on a lite muffler. Ive read that Jtec has some of the same issues also. plus you need to make your own bracket. slimeline includes it with theirs. steve

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey guys. got a question on my saito 72. I'm running it inverted. when I take the valve covers off I have hardly any oil in there. none sitting in the valve cover. and just a light coating on the rockers and springs. shouldn't there be more? I've had a valve stick and recently just replaced the valves, springs, retainers and cam. just worried I'm not getting enough lubrication in there. I'm not running it lean either. thanks steve.

RE: Lanier Extra 330 94" ARF
diggerup. I was playing with my needles the other day. mine too runs rich. I thought for sure it would be the low end. but if I went in too far it would stumble on throttle up. so I played with leaning the high end. I ended up at 6600 rpm and continueing to lean the needle it did not drop off. so it is obviously drawing fuel from elsewhere in the carb. I'm going to play with it some more with the cowl off. oh, and when in a knife edge or inverted it seems to clear out. steve

RE: Lanier Extra 330 94" ARF
I'm using 8 5955's. 4 on ailerons and 2 on rudder. I wouldn't go with only 2 on the ailerons. they are spread too far apart. If you grab the aileron you can easily twist it. you don't need 55's on the ailerons but I'm sick of replacing servo gears every year on my gassers. its always the ailerons that get beat up. plus they are not much more than the 59's. you should be fine with 1 on the rudder. 22 1/2 lbs. I know my 4" skyllites are heavier. and I'm running dual 2700 nmhd 6v packs for receiver. I changed the tail wheel to a cf one I had laying around but I don't think its much liter. I wasn't worried about the weight on this plane. the plane feels just right. doesn't fly like a brick at all. landings come in very slow. and with the barn door control surfaces. it does what you want it to do. it should be a great 3d plane. I had the confidence on my second flight to start throwing it around. steve.

RE: Lanier Extra 330 94" ARF
maidened mine today! WOW! lots of fun. I ended up putting alum. on the motorbox corner just incase. DA 85 started right up no problems. was really rich though. tons of pull. I tried leaning the low end but didn't make much difference. next time out I'll try leaning the top end. not tiill almost full throttle did the engine sound like it would run clean. I'm running 26x10 mej. w/tbm muffler. turned 6500 with no needle adjustments. as theo has mentioned you need to at least add some glue on the cowl mounts. I had one break loose. I added epoxy to 1 side but didn't have the time to do the other. (which had 1 break). the piece of wood that has the nylon in it came out. just need some glue on the corners by the nylon nut. I also changed the tires. I'm running 4" skykites. my cg is further back than stock. flys really well there. doing a wall the tail slides past 90' KE was great. very little coupling. inverted flight required a little down elev. landings were very nice. no balloning and was uneffected by the 10-15 mph cross winds. really have to set the idle low as the plane just wanted to keep flying on landings. the 85 seems to pick up speed on uplines. very cool! hanging the plane requires way less than half throttle. in fact it felt like just off idle is what it takes to keep the plane from climbing. I did add glue to the canopy latches and didn't have any problems. here are some pics from today. next time out I'll try to get some video. steve.

my mount is 1" and I can just get to both needles. I used 3 sheets of ply. cut with a jig saw and finished with the dremel sander. I made 2 halfs so I could still access the needles and fuel line.

RE: Lanier Extra 330 94" ARF
anyone else putting this together? I found out the studs that screw into the control surfaces are not 8-32 screws. and the nuts that tighten down the studs are very loose on the screws. I ended up going to home depot and getting some 8-32 hardware. I also drilled the hole out to 9/64 instead of 5/32 so I can make the stud flush and not poke through on the top side. another note. the 440 pushrods were a tad too long on the ailerons. I had the pushrod couplers all the way in and was not enough. I ended up making my own. when I get a chance I'll show some pics. steve.

RE: Best 50 to 55cc engine
mmixmaster. I had the some problems with my 2.4 also. very rich and a mid-range that was very annoying. tinkered with carb many times. not until I ordered a new carb and carb block did it clear up. It runs like a sewing machine now. super smooth transition. just doesn't like to be over proped. most wood 20 x 8's are too much. turns xoar, scorpia woods in the mid 6's. I threw a apc 20 x 8 on it the other day and it turned it at 8100. I think a mej 20 x 8 is the ticket. I have one coming today. Brisons not the same company since they've been sold. I know my engine was never pre-run. steve.

mine are 1". just enough room to get at the high speed needle. which is kinda burried behind the firewall. I made a plywood base for mine just incase. DA doesn't recommend using standoffs with this engine.
