RE: Ziroli P38 Lightning
All of the Ziroli planes fly very well including the P-38 . This P-38 just won the 2006 Scale Masters with Dennis Crooks version. One thing ,go with gas engines ie. G-38's or better for a reliable eng. performance. Just make sure they are reliable and don't try to sqeeze all the rpm out of them just a good reliable setting. Tom

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
If you put on a prop extension to the G-62, that will move the engine deeper into the cowl leaving more room for the muffler and spark plug to be inside the cowl. Tom

RE: Midwest Fun Scale
I had the privledge of assisting in a aviation class at the local high school. Since we had about 40 students we divided the class into work groups and then built all of the Midwest ez airplanes . Since the aviation class had planned for this they had the engines and kits in their budget , and Hitec stepped forward and supplied the 4 channel radios and buddy boxes to round out the project. All in the end we had six very nice looking birds to fly and enjoy, the local club had set up a picnic for the students and instructors for all the planes . We all had a great time in the end and as a side we also picked up a few new members. Tom

RE: yellow p47 tail wheel doors
The problem that I first had was tight ball joints on the lever plate that actually pulls the doors shut. That plate must move freely or the rest of the action will not move smoothly. Yes , as C550 says it must move freely. Once set up it works perfect. Since the first Y/A 47 I've done three more and all have nice free moving setups that work every time. I did make torque rod springs for the actual door also it helped to get the doors to open further like the full size. Also made seperate little covers for the very top of themains so that when they are closed that little area was'nt exposed. Simple spring loaded covers covered that area. Tom

RE: Just to let everyone know
Are you talking from personal expierence on this DR 1 handling? It has certinly not been my experence , the warbird guys by me have 4 and none of them seem to have any problems with the take-off and landings. All of these pilots are regular guys that fly well ,nothing special. One guy even stripped of the red covering and put on his own custom scheme. Another guy is fairly new and has not had any problems with T.O. and landings. You know that GP did somethings to make it a better handling a/c. Compared to my VK this is a no brainer and even the Ziroli can be a handful. This GP version definatly not in that class. Tom

RE: scale tail wheel
Jeff, The Robart 1 1/2 scale wheel does come apart. It is split into halves. Just carve out the inside of both halves just enough to position the wheel collar in between . Slide on one side then the wheel collar, then the other half , then add the wheel cover [spoked] and your done . Not so hard to do ,and not a small fortune ,and avoid the heavy tailwheel from Glennis . Tom

RE: Yellow Zero - Engine Choice ?
I have built 2 of these and both flew fine. One had a Quadra 42 and the other had a G-62 and honestly the Q-42 worked out better and was a better fit. just my 2 cents. Tom

RE: Rosefire 57" Wingspan Aluminum R/C Kit ...whats the deal?
BUT ONE BIG DIFFERENCE, the Marengo metals company actually makes the P-51 Mustang and a Zero that fly and do so very well. They are making the planes for people who actually appreciate what they make. And these are proven. They even went so far as to get a booth ,with great difficulty ,at Toledo last year and showed their finished products. But in the end it's what trips your trigger isn'nt it !!!! I would not switch to metal just because the Mono-Kote cracks and falls off. Tom

RE: Rosefire 57" Wingspan Aluminum R/C Kit ...whats the deal?
wow , that iron-on covering is some kind of new fangled covering ???? come on , under what log has ROSE MODELS been living. so switching to aluminum covering means I won't have to wipe down my SPITCANE. DAH why didn't I think of that. WAD,U,MEAN I got learn how to rivit aluminum. I just figgered out that new stuff they call CA. I remember that big ripoff of the ALL ALUMINUM 1/4 scale P-51 that made a such big splash at Toledo about 15years ago . Great intentions , sounds too good to be true ,probably not!!!!! my two cents tom

RE: Giant T-6 or Zero
VDOO, Just pick up some Ziroli,D.Smith , Bates plans and enlarge 10% to fit this engine. Or just fudge the cowl 10 % , since that will make all the kit cutter guys happy. Since if you go all big You will have to come up with the cowl canopy wheels and retracts stuff. tom

[image]http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h227/tomlzr/tomsPup-1.jpg[/image] here's my pup with a G-23 at a local meet. 14lb rtf ,no nose weight needed kills DR-1's and D-7's, that is flying circles around them! tom

RE: P-38 supercharger detail
very nice detail , just a problem , the exhaust normally comes out of those vanes that you made. the exhaust shown coming out staining the fuse is only active when getting into overboost. that's why P-38's are always so stained even back to the rudders. only the P-400 a non- turbocharged version would have a exhaust stain as shown. other than that very nicely done. tom

RE: Air Retracts- Gravel
I see the tail draggers , do they fly off gravel also ? Do the prop tips get chewed up? As far as the retracts go one word _______ MAINTENCE , keep the piston rod clean use no oil on that surface, attracts dust and grit that will wear out prematurley. tom

RE: Ziroli 101" B25- what engines should i use
First off the zenoah g-23 's are more than enough , and what Ziroli suggest. Of course the G-26 puts out almost what the G-38's do . Only time a bigger engine is needed is if you build the bigger version [120"]. I have seen some run on glow engines and seen the pilots prove how good they were by the single engine practice they got . nuf said Nick told me the best are gas ign. engines, and don't chase the needles to get them to sync. that WILL be a desiaster. tom

RE: Balsa USA 1/3 Pup owners, got a weight question
You do know that BUSA had moved the cowl/engine/firewall forward to help with the balancing issue of all of their WWI birds! With that heavier engine you have , could move the fire wall and cowl back to the scale location . And you would not have to add any weight at all. The round cowl will let you move quite a bit to finalize it also. when you get lemons [heavy] make lemonade[scale]. tom

RE: American S.E5 colour scheme
The Stars on that top SE-5 where not applied until 1922 , there fore not WW -I and definatly not that yellow and olive scheme ,a early National Guard color of the early 1920's. All US aircraft used only red, white and blue roundals during WW-I tom

RE: Scale Mustang Retracts
you need to get a UPS-2 to replace your retract control valve! this valve controls it all, speed per side up or down ,gear doors movement, tailwheel speed . sorry in england I don't know where to look . made in canada . they have control valves for all different gear /door sequences and brake control valves, speed brake valves,etc.. tom

RE: Need Some Giant Warbird Prop Help
Remember, high pitch or low pitch you need to get 7,200 RPM static on the ground . Does your prop hub have the graduated marks on it , if so taking the prop off the engine will not be neccesary, mark both halfs with a Magic Marker and record your RPM at that setting. Loosen the prop hub screws as your directions say and loosen the prop hub bolt and turn the dial a couple of graduated marks, tighten prop hub screws and tighten the hub bolt , fire up the engine. Did the RPM go higher or lower ,record that . Now keep dialing the above procedure till you get to 7,200 rpm. There is no need to fly until you get to that rpm. Take it from experience I have two of these props on a P-38 ,they are sweet. tom

RE: Nose weight
No sand? Try greasing up the nose of the a/c and forcing in to plaster of paris , after dry the grease will allow the release from the plaster and then a dowel and lead will do the trick. tom

RE: Need Some Giant Warbird Prop Help
All you need is a tach and set the blade angle to achieve 7200rpm on the ground. This will provide a good starting point. This is why they call these props ground adjustable. Yes it means takeing the prop off many times and resetting the pitch but in the end it will very rewarding . Just keep from breaking blades by tipping up on the nose or it will be very expensive. By the way making a measureing fixture will make things easier . Contact Solo for details. Tom

RE: RCV torque +Aluminum prop hub + Aluminum Spinner = stripping
Make washers from drywall sanding mesh . One between driver hub and spinner back plate and one one the front of the spinner back plate and prop. The grit on the washers will dig in and stop all that slipping . That driver on the engine looks like it should be faced by a machist or sent back to the factory for them to get it right. tom

Well that will make a nice size bird, and with all that documentation just down the road , go for it!! Have you scratch designed before? Or someone in your club that has scratch built will help you not to run into pitfalls. If not you might try Model Cad , will help on that curvy wing and former placement. tom
