RE: Charging Lipo Batteries In Transmitter
I understand that. My question is about leaving it unattended. Like plugging it in and going to bed.

RE: Charging Lipo Batteries In Transmitter
I'm afraid I wasn't very clear. You can buy a Lipo battery from Spektrum for the DX8. You install the battery and then go into the programming and tell it you installed the Lipo. It will configure the radio charger to now charge the Lipo and turn it off when it is done. There are no balance leads. The battery is made for the transmitter. My son's QQ DX18 came from Horizon with the Lipo batteries installed. They tell you to charge the battery until the charge indicator on the transmitter goes out. Still don't like the idea of charging it unattended.

Charging Lipo Batteries In Transmitter
I've just converted my DX 8 to Lipo batteries. The problem is when you connect the charger the batteries charge at an extremely slow rate. I can charge all my flight batteries in about 2 hours. In that time the transmitter will only go up about 2 tenths of a volt. Do any of you guys charge your lipo transmitter batteries overnight? I've have 2 flight batteries go off charging so I don't leave them alone, but that is a high rate of charge. I guess I'm just concerned. Bob

RE: Miss Wind 50 Trimming Problems
Ralph: Because the airplane is an ARF and there are no incidence listed in the instructions I assembled it by using the factory mounting points. I would love to change them but because the wings are mounted with carbon rods throught gig drill holes it wouldn't be easy. I'll measure it the first chance I get and post them here. Thanks Bob

Miss Wind 50 Trimming Problems
Is there anyone out there flying a Miss Wind 50 that has gotten it trimed properly. I've got about 30 flights on mine and I have two problem I can't fix, sort of cutting up the airplane. The airplane is carring a lot of up elevator trim. Because of that it takes almost full down elevator to hold the airplane inverted. It also pulls to the canope on both the up and down lines. On the down line it will pull to level flight all by its self. I've been moving the CG back and it hasn't helped. I've got it to the point that it's starting to get touchy on landing and nothing has changed. I'd love the change the wing incedence but the way the wings are mounted would be a major reconstruction. If you sight the wings there is a lot of negative in the top wing. I've set up biplanes in the past with the bottom wing at zero and the top at -1 but this look like more that that. Before I either start cutting on this airframe or just start with another plane I thought I'd ask if anybody fixed one of these. Thanks Bob

RE: 150 meter rule.
We did this 20 years ago and it was an interesting experiment. We put a person in the field right at the 150 meter pole. The instruction was to just watch the airplane. If the airplane is closer than 150 meters the persone in the field will be facing the flight line. If it's father out he will be facing away from the flight line. If you are on you will be looking at his side. This way there is no signaling. All your caller has to do is watch which way the person if facing. Most of the time, even when you thought you were close you were looking at the back of the persons head.

RE: Who else has failed on their first build?
Here's a question. Does the model use a semi-symetrical airfoil? I had a student years ago build a model with the same complaint. It had a semi-symetrical wing and he built one of the wing panels upside down. You couldn't see it looking at the airplane but when we cut the wingtip off you could see that on the one wing panel the airfoil was upside down. If this is the case you will need to build a new wing.

RE: Aurora Avant stolen @ Helis Over Delaware
It would be a good idea to notify all the local hobby shops. Years ago a friend had his heli stolen out of his shed and they showed up the the local shop. I'd like to think this wasn't stolen by a heli pilot.

RE: Ideas for an intro pattern class
It amaze me how every hobby whether it’s pattern flying, racing or checkers keeps having this same conversation, and nothing seems to change. We always want to make an easier class to attract the beginners. We make the class and if it works at all it doesn’t work long. The problem isn’t always the idea it’s the execution. Back when pattern was starting with the Turn-A-Round format the beginner’s class was called Novice. It started out being a very easy Turn-A-Round class. The experts said that this was too hard and you needed something easier to attract the beginners. So the class breaks were added. Now the Novice could fly three maneuvers and break the box to reposition his airplane for the next 3 maneuvers. Basically what you have now. Then it was thought that you weren’t getting any new people because the class was called Novice. The feeling was that no one wanted to fly novice because they were better than that and the Sportsman class was too big a jump. So Novice became Sportsman and you called the old Sportsman class Intermediate and made it easier. Still no one came. Now you want another easier class. The classes aren’t the problem. The effort required to do this, like all forms of competition is the problem. Like most people that compete when you go to the field what do you do? You practice. You fly flight after flight with your expensive pattern airplane and get better and better. You are willing to help anyone that has an interest but no one usually says anything. It is conceived that to be competitive in pattern you need to practice every day with your expensive airplane. Even if I approach you about getting involved, this first thing I’m told is that you’d love to help but my airplane is too big or too heavy and if I want to compete I need to get a different airplane. Or if I call the CD at the contest 3 hours from my house he might let me fly my airplane. Unless someone protests. I’m going to cut this because it’s getting a little long. But, if you want to bring new blood into Pattern try to make entering the contest easier not the maneuvers. I can go to an electric fly less than an hour from my house and fly any electric airplane I own. I have to build a different airplane, practice forever, and travel 3 hours to fly pattern. You decide where as a beginner I’m going to go.

RE: Post your favorite quotes
Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery, live for today. Carrol Shelby Mother told me there would be days like today. She never said there would be so may so close together. Unknown Any landing you can walk away from is a good on. Any landing that you can use the airplane again is a great one. Half unknown and half me.

RE: Snapped crankshaft and now a damaged sleeve.
If you put the engine in an oven at 300 drgrees for about 10 to 15 minutes the sleeve will come righ out. You'll have to replace the bearings after this but when the crank broke they should have been replaced anyway.

RE: My suggestion to increase pattern participation
I taught my son to fly pattern years ago by telling him what to do not the manuver. If we needed to do a hump with 1/2 roll up I would tell him to pull vertical and do a 1/2 roll. then push to vertical down and exit upright. It worked so well that when we fly the unknowns at an IMAC contest that is how we do it. You don't have to remember the manuvers just to listen to your caller. You can even add corrections in this to help the manuvers look better.

RE: pay-pal money FROZEN
I opened an account with PP and tied it to my Discover card. I used the account for over a year as a buyer only. All of a sudden I make a purchase and am told by PP that they need my bank account number to prove my identy. I've been the victum of identify theft twice so no one gets my accounts numbers. I contacted PP and told them I was not willing to give up the account numbers and just continue to bill my card. I was told no account numbers no service. I accepted the no service. They called me last month wanting to know why I stopped using my PP account. I informed them that they had a better chance of seeing God then getting my account numbers and they said that we could not do business. So I told them to kiss off. Why would anyone gove these people access to an accout is beyound me. If they can put money in they can take it out. Sounds like they do.

RE: When LiPo's Attack!!!
I had a 6S2P battery they had a cell go bad. I called the cell manufacter and explained the problem. They were very professional and offered to replace the battery. Then they said to just dispose of the old battery. This is where I got dumb. I've built batteries for electric flight for many years so I decided to cut the 6S2P apart and make up a couple of 3s packs. While cutting the conver off the 6S pack I nicked the cover on one of the cells. It puffed up and light off. Luckily I was in the garage and the door was open. I grabbed the battery by the leads and just threw it out the door. It slide down the driveway and stopped about 1/2 way down. It then melted the asphalt and disappeared in the hole. Needless to say I now have a new concrete drivway and a new respect for Li-Po batteries. At least I still have the house and the garage.

RE: Pattern Rules Proposals
If I remember correctly the original reason for the weight rule was to keep some of the TOC airplanes out. At the time the weight rule when into effect the TOC and IMAC airplanes were not as big as they turned out to be now. I remember at the time Dean Pappas had an Laser that weighted 18 lbs and would fit in the box with the short spinner. At the time the pattern flyers didn't want to deal with those airplanes. That was 20 or so years ago. The difference in these airplanes has gotten so wide that I don't see it as a problem anymore. Heck when I started flying pattern you were not allowed an engne bigger that a 60. Then the 4 stroke people got it changed to 60 2 stroke and 120 4 stroke. That rule was dropped when it stopped being an issue. The difference between a pattern airplane and an IMAC airplane is now so large that you do not need the weight rule. Keep the size and lose the weight. At least in say the lower couple classes. They use to allow a bigger airplane in sportsman to try to bring in new blood. I didn't do it because I hate the sportsman pattern. I want to fly advanced. I know this would help me restart.

RE: Pattern Rules Proposals
Personally I'd like to see the weight rule eliminated in the AMA classes. Keep the 78'' rule but don't worry about the weight. I flew pattern in the 80's and early 90's and stopped because I got tired of all the airplanes looking the same. I flew IMAC up until a few years ago and stopped because the most of the contests are about 3 hours away. I really miss competing and have a 78 inch Edge that I would fly in pattern or IMAC at the closer contests. Problem is it weighs 15 lbs so it's not legel in Pattern. Yes I know I'm not going to win but I don't care. I just want to fly a plane that I like the looks of.

RE: Pattern weight rule - why?
Okay back to the weight rule. I was flying Pattern back when the first unlimited engine rule went into affect. At that time the TOC was flying larger airplanes with big engines. Dean Pappas has a TOC biplane with a OPS 60 CC Twin that weighted almost 20 lbs. With the short spinner it fit in the 2 meter box. The rules makers in pattern went to the 11 lb rule to keep those airplanes out. At the time they felt it would hurt the sport. As per now I agree the rule needs to be changed.

DLE 111 Warranty Issue
My son bought a DLE 111 from or local hobby shop before Tower and Troy Built were importing them. We've got about 4 gallons of fuel through the engine and the brass retainer that holds the rod bearings broke and distroyed the engine. The shop where we bought the engine tried to contact his orginal supplier and was told they don't handle the engine anymore. Both Tower and Troy Built will sell us the parts but don't want to know anything about the warranty. I don't blame Tower or Troy Built as they didn't supply the engine but you would thing that someone would step up and help. Has anyone had any luck getting one of these earlier engines fixed under the warranty? If so how did you get it done. The number on the engine is 47 so it was one of the earler shipments. I've seen other posts where this engine has had the same failure and no one has said if they were able to get it fixed. We priced the parts at almost $500. Before we will do that I'll find a good used DA. Thanks Bob
