RE: Cutting parts from plans
I use Reynolds freezer paper laid over the plan, wax side down. Trace the part, cut it out and then use a trim iron to stick it to the balsa or ply. Cut out with a scroll saw and sand to the final shape. Works good. Bill

RE: Falke Biplane 60 build
I am having to post using my phone which is a pain but how is your build coming? I have one design-build but not a bipe and no swept wings. Seventy eight inch span with a converted 31cc Ryobi. Both the plane and the engine conversion were firsts for me. It has not been flown yet and I can't find the memory stick with the pics. Sorry for the rambling, lol. I will post more when I can get on a computer. Bill

RE: Why don't we have more 4 stroke gassers?
There's been a few of the guys in the engine conversion section that have converted Stilhs. They have no sumps and run on a pre-mixed fuel. Finding information on the engines is kinda hard from Stilh and new long blocks are pricey.

RE: Pulsejet Harry will fly again!
Certainly none of my business but I'm thinking that a little more thrash can picking may have turned up a German V-1. The pulse jet would be a scale propulsion system. You could cram a Vidalia onion in for the nose cone, put a little container of dipping sauce behind it for balance if it really matters and blast off on scale flight. Up and down. When it hits the ground and blows up you have a scale flight and a done onion with sauce at the same time. KISS, LOL. Good luck and I hope you survive, Bill

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
My bad. I was talking about the starburst trim on the wing. I also maybe need to tone down the "PITA" part of my statement. After I found a few mistakes and thereafter was allert to the fact that things needed to be double checked before doing something, it was a very enjoyable build. This build was my second plans built project so by no means am I an expert.

RE: Hostetler 33% Decathlon
Joe, I may have plans that are from the same guy. They are without a doubt copies of Wendall's. Mine is the quarter scale size that I got from a dealer on the auction site that sells a lot of plans. There were so many mistakes that I took the old saying of "measure twice and cut once" to heart, lol. The rays on the wing was even drawn in backwards, pointing forward. It was a PITA to work with them. Bill

Doing an all nighter trying to get a new plane ready to take to the field and realizing I need a control horn, a tail wheel, the allen screw for a wheel collar or something that I have somewhere in this mess and can't find. This seems to always happen on Saturday night when the hobby shop will not be open on Sunday.

RE: New pilot, need a suggestion.
I will fourth or fifth or whatever it is for the LT-40. For a kit, it comes as close as you can get in the instant gratification department which to me is what ARF's are all about. It just snaps together and them you glue it up. I guess it could be built crooked but I don't see how if the joints are tight. Its a very good flier but if built light will float a lot when it comes to landing time. I flew the one I had years ago with an Enya 45CX which was more than enough engine. Whatever you decide to build, enjoy! Flying RC is a great hobby and you will meet some of the best folks at the flying field.

RE: need new building board
The solid core doors from Lowe's that I have seen have a particle board core with one by edging and a luan or birch finished surface. I don't really see where it would be any benefit but those doors can be ordered with a solid wood core which is good for a house but maybe not necessary for a building board. I got my file cabinets at a yard sell in good shape for not much money. They have casters that can be adjusted to make the work surface dead level. I guess some file cabinets may not have casters but these are real nice heavy duty ones.

RE: need new building board
I just bought a three foot wide by six foot eight inch solid core door at Lowe's for about $55. For the base I used two short filing cabinets that are about 30-32 inches high, one at each end. This set up gives me a good flat surface to build on and several nice drawers right under the table. I also use drywall on the top. Bill

RE: How far
In the late eighties I had a wrist watch that had a recording altimeter in it. I put it in the biggest plane I had then which was probably a Easy 100 that BUSA sold then that had a seventy inch wing span. I flew it up until it was just a dot and when I brought it back down and landed I was thinking that I was maybe a half of a mile high. When I checked the watch I was surprised to find that it was reading just a little over twelve hundred feet. As a side note, I had to get glasses about a month later so maybe I could have gotten a little higher with better vision. Bill

RE: Newbie Dilemma
I think the only bad thing about the LT-40 is that it is such a well thought out kit and goes together so good that if you were to get another manufactures kit later, you will disappointed to learn that they are not all up to Sigs standards. You will enjoy the build and it is really hard to do anything wrong with them. Most older kits, even Sigs were not laser cut and did not have interlocking tabs and were a lot more work to assemble but taught you more about building when they were finished. It will be a special moment for you when a plane that you built takes to the sky for the first time. On the one I had, I flew it with an Enya 45CX which was maybe a little to much power. If I had it to do over I would use a Saito also. They just sound like an airplane. Enjoy.[;)]

RE: Ryans Rebel Build Thread
101st AB, you might want to go to the conversion threads in the gas engine section. There is ton of information there about most of the engines that come in weed eaters, chainsaws, blowers and the like that are good for conversions. I have a Ryobi 31 cc that I have converted that is going in a plane I designed and built. My plane is much like this Rebel. The battery tab down inside my camera broke somehow or I would post pics. To do a conversion most of the time you will need a prop shaft adapter, a little bit larger carb with a standoff to get the carb away from the engine some for throttle clearance, a motor mount and usually a slightly modified, lightened muffler. This was my first time trying it and my first gaser and it is turning an APC 18/6W at 8000 and a 18/8W at 7350. I bought Bowman rings which are not seated all the way yet so I think it will get better than what I have posted as it gets broken in. There is everything you would need to know in the conversion thread somewhere. There is a lot of reading and experience there. Good luck, Bill

RE: Clicking Ryobi
ORIGINAL: w8ye This first part of this post is for new people that may be reading this? The gap in the ring must not go through a port area. I'm sure you have already been there but the ring must be pinned to keep the gap between port areas - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If your catching or clicking point moved, it may very well be a bearing? I rebuild a lot of glow engines and old bearings are frustrating in that you will think you have them cleaned out and that they will be fine and the next time you pick the engine up, there is a rough place in a bearing.
No actually I think I would be a good poster child for new.[:D]

RE: Clicking Ryobi
Kinda reminds me of trying to get a computer to act right, lol. I changed out the crankcase for the other one i have that is the same and am still getting some noise, but now it seems to be at the top and the bottom of the stroke. I feel no resistance at all to going through a complete 360 degree rotation so maybe I am over reacting a little. Or not I was thinking that maybe I had dried out the bearing by soaking em in gas and so I put a drop or two of two stroke oil on them and that seemed to help or maybe it was just masking the problem. I'm gonna keep messing with it but have few parts to keep eliminating things. Bill
