The plans are now finished. I am quite happy with the results and confident this will fly like hell. The next steps are laser cut and find time for the build. Here are again a snapshot of the plans and the laser cut sheets:

RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
Glad to read that the build was smooth and that you liked my design. I guess that Rich's quality laser cut helped a lot too [;)] Actually, I flew the plan last year before the short kit was available. I was very happy with the performance: very stable and predictible and easy to slow down. The knife edge was difficult to hold but after some reflection, the wing struts could be slightly enlarged to act as side force generators. I used a MVVS 35cc. It was fairly comfortable but a 50cc will be more appropriate for real 3D. (see post # 139 in this thread) The bad point is that I crashed the plane during a hover due to motor failure before taking any picture [&o]. Unfortunately, I had very little time to build a second Spirit of Pitts since the birth of our daughter last summer. So .... Sorry guys ... I have nothing to show to you except may be the progress of Oldtimer2's build. He posted some pictures in the photo Gallery some time ago. Here are some of his pictures ...

RE: Plans for 3.14
You will find below a snapshot of my drawing board. It is still a bit messy: the layout still need to be worked out as well as some details. Some design features: - The fuse is designed to be extremely rigid - Wing airfoil : E168 (14%) - Two piece wing (w/wing tube) - Three positions for the wing tube on the fuse for optimal plane balance for various motor configurations. - Airfoiled elevator and rudder (NACA0008) - Motor mount for conventional or electro motor

Plans for 3.14
Hi, For some time I had a a large a large 3D plane on my wish list ... the design and plans are on their way. It will look like the OMP Edge 540 Hybrid. The design is based on the following idea: when watching the proportions and dimensions of most of the 3D planes, I realized that 1/3 looks like a constant. Well ... I select the most mysterious constant ... Pi or 3.1415. This constant was/is fascinating generations of scientist and the final value of Pi is still undiscovered. Based on Pi, I calculated most of the plane dimensions (eg: root chord = Fuse length * 31.4%, CG of wing place at 31.4% of the fuse length, aileron width = 31.4 % of the chord, ...). I know this is a very empiric way to design a plane but it worked very well! The plane name was fairly easy to choose [:)] The plans and laser cut sheets will be available soon for the following wingspan: - 153.8 cm (60.5 inch) / 70 class motor or Hacker A50 powered by 5-6 LiPo - 205 cm (80.7 inch) / 50cc Gas motor As usual, I'll share the plans with you guys. Expect the same plan quality as for the Spirit of Pitts. Watch this thread. Cheers, BB Work is still in progress but here is a first preview:

RE: Airfoil coordinates into Profili software
Marco, 1) create a file with Notepad and name it S8064.DAT 2) Paste the airfoil coordinates as you did hereabove 3) Save your file --> at this point you have a DAT file compatible with Profili 4) In Profili, Go to the menu --> Airfoils --> Airfoil Management --> Import --> Import Airfoil from a .DAT file That's it ! If you have difficulties to create the .DAT file then drop a PM with your Email address and I'll reply with the file. Cheers, Bernard

RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
Guys, When reading the thread, I realized that I didn't posted anything about the first prototype build and flight characteristics. Back in June, I received a scroll saw from my wife for my birthday and ... I started to cut the Spirit of Pitts. Even with the right tools, it was a real pain to get this done but the result was already nice. Luckily for you, a laser kit is available; this will reduce the build time, increase the precision and avoid a lot of pain [;)] As you know, the Spirit of Pitts is largely inspired by the Pitts Model 12. However, it is slightly modified to allow 3D aerobatics: - increased fuse length - increased wings surface - increased control surfaces Well ... after having flown this plane, I can tell you that the Spirit of Pitts is an excellent 3D flyer. It is stable in a hover and torque rolls are fairly easy. Most of the 3D maneuvers are performed easily. Knife edges are possible but challenging … probably due to the rounded lateral surface. Thanks to the low wing load, it flies stable and is able to slow down a lot. It will slow down for 'trainer-like' landings. However, a touch of motor is always more than welcome … it’s a bipe [;)] Now, I can tell you this : flying 3D with a bipe is definitely something different … the plane is begging for style & elegance and pushes your pilot skills to the next level. It’s an eye catcher, you should have seen the jealous eyes on the flying field… Great feelings [:)] Here are again some key characteristics: Wingspan 175 cm Length 175 cm Airfoil E169 (14.5%) Wings surface 119 dm² Weight 6.5 Kg (estimated) - 7.4 Kg (Prototype) Wing load 54 grs/dm² (estimated) - 63 grs/dm² (Prototype) Top wing incidence: 0° Bottom wing incidence: 0° Elevator incidence: 0° Motor down trust angle: 0° Motor right trust angle: 2° For the first flight, the plane was centered 140 mm from the leading edge of the top wing. The Center of Gravity was moved slightly backward for 3D acrobatics. The fuel tank should be placed as close as possible for the center of Gravity to ensure consistent flight characteristics throughout the flight. My setup was as follow: 4*HS-645MG for ailerons 2* HS-645MG for elevators 1* HS-945MG for the rudder a standard servo for the motor MVVS 35cc (2.10) Gas After the birth of our little daughter, I didn’t have an opportunity to go to the flying field again. During the winter months, I will focus on building the 2nd Spirit of Pitts based on the production laser kit. I am convinced that it can be at least 1/2 Kg lighter. This time, I will take pictures of the build and will post them. Cheers, Bernard

RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
I am working on the plans to include the latest changes resulting from the Laser cut fine tuning. The layout is now changed to 36 x 125 inch. this should solve most of the printing problems. In addition, I will also include a tiled version for smaller paper format. You will receive a new plan version as soon as it is ready. Several people asked if the plan will stay available separatly without buying a kit. Currently, the answer is yes. RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
Mike, when I have some time this weekend, I will send you a 50% copy of the plans. As mentioned earlier, there were quite a few modifications of the parts on the cut sheets to allow better part fitting and to correct some issues. Some missing parts were added and some other parts were added to match the required quantity/parts. The fuse sides were 'sectioned' (3 sections instead of 2 on previous versions) to accommodate with the size limitation of the laser cut machine. The picture in the previous reply is just one of the prototype. The final version will contain even more parts. Keep in mind that when the full size kit is ready. It is extremely easy to scale down the laser cut to 50%. Only the material list would change. A nice 50% laser kit or a long manual labor: it's your decision [:D] Cheers, Bernard

RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
The laser cut prototyping is progressing very well. A lot of parts were added and -most important- some parts (most of the fuse formers, fuse side & re-enforcement, ...) were modified or fine-tuned. The previously distributed laser cut sheets do not contain those changes. A top quality laser kit will be available soon (see pictures). Stay tuned here [:)] Another subject: I received several requests to downsize the plans. I would suggest 60% of the actual size. This will avoid to redraw all the formers because the spar sections stays within the standard balsa wood measurements (10*10 mm --> 6*6 mm , 5*5 mm --> 3*3 mm, sheeting from 2 mm to 1.5 mm, ...). This would end up with a wingspan of around 41 inch (105 mm). A .40 motor (or brushless electric motor) would be perfect for this type of plane. If there are enough demand, a laser kit could be produced. Let me know if you would be interested. Cheers, Bernard

RE: Pitts M12 26% plans available soon
Sorry for the delays for the Cut sheets. I was quite busy at work the past couple of weeks. As promised, the reviewed & corrected fuse & wing plans have been sent during the past weekend. The Laser Cut sheets are almost ready. Be aware that I found a major bug on the previous version which was available on Terry's site. In fact, they are unusable. I you want the new laser cut sheets then follow my instructions on post 44. Idem for the plans. People that already requested the plans via PM will get the new laser cut sheet automatically from me. BTW: I finally received a quote from LaserWorks [link]http://www.laserlizard.com[/link].
The laser time would be 200 minutes, which equates to $200.00. Materials would be $58.28. The total would be $258.28.
This the first time for me. I have no idea if the price is OK. Can someone help me here ?
