RE: How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
The nice thing about ording extra's of those Exi 450 kits, is that the head is already assembled. So if you are using the other two for spare parts.... Fixing a completely trashed head only takes about a minute tops.. Just remove the entire head from the spares heli, and swap them out. You get to keep on flying, and fix the broken head later. I keep a couple of extra rotor heads in my heli box. All constructed and ready to go. Swapping them out is easy. Just undo the bolt under the main gears, disconnect the servo arms from the swashplate, and pull the whole head off. Slide a new head on there, reconnect servo arms, and put the bolt back in. Then when I get home, I can disassemble the busted up head and order and fix whatever is messed up. Usually in a light crash, the spindle is the first to go. If you are looking for a crash kit, here are the damage parts in order of "needed most" from my experience. Spindles (aka feathering shafts) Main shafts Flybars Main gears (only if you are running in 3D mode, if you are still in normal mode most of the time, you wont bust these up as much) Blade grips Tail booms Tail rotor actuator arm (that "L" shaped arm that transfers the servo's movement to the tail rotor blades, and its partner in crime...the piece that rides on the tail rotor shaft) Skids Then of course there is the usual things that nearly ALWAYS break....like blades, and canopies.

Also guys.... I just hit that xheli site..... They have the DCTRUM gyro for $12 BUCKS!!!!! http://www.xheli.com/60p-dy-1017.html So that knocks it down even cheaper.

RE: How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
I dont know about the xheli ones because I've never ordered from them. I always got them from nitroplanes. I know the ones from nitroplanes are complete airframes. Here is the link. http://www.nitroplanes.com/exi-450-rc-helicopter-kit-v2.html They say its the plastic version....but what they mean is that some of the head parts are plastic. Its identical to the Trex SA version, which has a metal frame, metal head block, plastic mixing arms, and a dual material swashplate (half metal/half plastic). Their description is confusing when they say plastic version, as its not all plastic. You can look at the close up pics in the link above to see if its what you are looking for. With the one from nitroplanes, its already mostly assembled just like the Trex SA. As for the SE kit....The SE is all metal...no plastic parts. So that would be the difference there. The PRO CF would probably be a clone of the Trex Pro which is carbon fiber frames, and a slightly different metal head from previous versions. You probably wont notice a difference in flying either the half plastic/half metal or full metal heads. The difference is just bling in reality. Maybe just a tad better in durability with the metal ones. As for the metal heads.... I cant tell any difference between the EXI metal head and the Align metal head. They both fly the same. The only difference I can see between them is that the anodizing is a little bit lighter on the EXI stuff, where as the Align parts are just a bit darker. Ive heard of people saying the metal is softer in the EXI head, but Ive not found this to be the case. I wouldnt hesitate to use the EXI head parts any day of the week. Funny story....today I pulled out my spare parts bucket, and started browsing through it.... Come to find out, I had almost an entire 450 in spare parts....so I built another 450..LOL All I need is some skids.

RE: How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
Here are a few pics of my most "confused" 450. It doesnt know whether its a Align Trex or a Exi, or what. This perticular one started as a Exi 450 kit....the $29 one. Its been in a few mishaps, and I just tossed on whatever part was available at the time to get it back up and running. So it has a wide variety of mixed up 450 parts just to show how compatible they are. The head block is Exi, The mixing arms are Exi. The Blade grips???? I dont even know what they came off of. The swashplate is Align The flybar paddles are Align The main shaft is a MX400...LOL I had a surplus of these from back in the day...so I just keep using them. The frame is Exi The tail boom is Align The blades are some cheapo $17 carbon fibers I picked up at Hodges Hobbies. It flys just as well as any of the other 450's I have.

RE: How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
Yes, spare parts are plentiful. The Align 450 SA, SE parts fit the EXI with no problems, so you can use either Align Trex parts or Exi parts. I have not had any fitment issues. One of my helis has a EXI frame, with a Align swashplate, EXI metal head parts, Align Blade grips, Align Blue Gears, Micropro tail unit.... I even had one of the EXI 450's with a old MX400 head on it for a while. That's one of the reasons I prefer the Trex/Exi 450 size heli. You can get parts just about anywhere. They even sell a metal head/metal tail unit combo for $36 bucks. http://www.hobbypartz.com/exicncmerohe.html They are so cheap, I keep an extra set in my heli case. That way if I do have a crash...I just unbolt the head, swap it out, and keep on flying. I repair the other one later. Now regarding compatiblility.... The Exi 450 is identical to the Align Trex SA version. The Trex SA, and SE stuff will fit the Exi. The Align Trex Sport Edition has many simularities, and some parts will fit between the two. The biggest difference is the head block is wider on the Sport Edition, so you might run into some tweaking there. As you mentioned the XL and X versions of the Trex are the older versions that are getting hard to find and are well on their way out. The Pro versions of both are a bit different. Some of the head parts are compatible, the tail is not. The Pro versions have a torque tube (fancy name for shaft/gear driven) unlike the non-Pro versions which use a belt drive setup. Personally, I hate the Pro's torque tube setup. On the belt driven version, if you get a boom strike...you just swap the tube. On the Pro version, a tail strike usually takes out the entire torque tube, and sometimes destroys the tail gears. Those torque tubes are WAY more expensive than a old 2 dollar tail boom tube. The other issue I have with the torque tube is if you clip the tail blades on the ground, or snag them in grass it strips out the gears. To replace it you have to tear down the entire tail gear box....it sucks. But some people really like it. Personal preference really.

RE: How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
As I've mentioned, Ive been flying this setup for a little over a year now. It would be perfect for scale jobs. One thing you could do too, is weight the flybar heavy, and it would fly really scale too. On a side note.... hobbyparts.com has fiberglass/plastic scale fuselages for the 450's. Hughes 500's, Bell 222, and even some nice agusta bodies. I've been thinking about building a scale heli myself...probably a hughes 500MD in solid black. You could pretty much build a scale heli for a little over 200 bucks...49 for the fuselage, and 156 bucks for the guts.

How to build a cheap GOOD heli.
Ok, I know many of us arent Donald Trump...so we cant go spend gobs of money for a heli. So how do you build a decent heli without breaking the bank? Normally, cheap and good dont belong in the same sentence. But..... For those of you getting into helicopters, that want a decent helicopter, there are options. And Ill share a secret option that Ive used now for a while. This setup is the cheapest I could build one, while still retaining a respectable amount of "good". I like the 450 size helis. So Im going to be going off that premise. First off, you will need a heli kit. Align is nice, but you dont have to spend that kind of money for a trex. Trex clones can be had for very cheap, and many are just as nice as the Trex, and fly the same. Goto nitroplanes.com and order a Exi 450 kit. They are $29 bucks. DIRT CHEAP. Shoot....order 3 or 4 at that price. That way when you kill one, you can toss it in the parts bin, and put all the equipment into another one. Or build two or three of them for backups. The next most critical piece of equipment is the Gyro. You dont need a Futaba 401. Ive tried a bunch of different gyro's on the market, and I finally found one that in my opinion is actually better than the 401, and much cheaper. Its the DCTRUM GY48V AVCS Gyro. You can get them at http://store.rcsupersales.net/servlet/-strse-5088/GY48V-GyrodshDY-dsh-1017/Detail I really do like it better than the 401. For one, it's encased in anodized metal, so you can top mount that thing without worrying about a flybar paddle smashing it into a bazillon pieces. Secondly, its a AVCS gyro....the workings are identical to the 401. Thirdly, it just plain works, and its cheap at $36 bucks. Ive since stopped buying the 401, and put these on all my heli's. Why spend more for the same thing, and yes....it will run digital tail servos. Next, for the servos. Servos in general are finicky devices. And when combined with low quality, can be a nightmare. Ive tried lots of the cheap garbage out there that weren't worth the plastic they were made out of. But....amist the garbage, I found a couple that actually arent too bad for helis. T-Pro SG90 servos from nitroplanes.com - They run $5 bucks a pop, and Ive been using them in my heli's for a while now. Even with a couple of bad hits, they havent failed once. Surprise Surprise. For the tail....the EXI D113F digital. $10 bucks at nitroplanes.com This too is a really decent digital tail servo, and it also fits the Trex type tailboom mounts perfectly. Use the round servo arm. It will be smooth as glass. Speed controller....I use the Exceed RC's 30A ESC - $14.95 from nitroplanes.com Motor....Exceed RC Optima from nitroplanes.com - $32 bucks. Lipos... Any ol' 3cell 2200mah lipo. Ive been having good success with the "lightmax" 2200 20C Zippy packs that I picked up for $20 a piece. You can try these....which are probably similar...http://www.nitroplanes.com/83p-2200mah-3s1p-111-20c.html So lets look at your total for a Exi 450 $156.95....minus reciever. That's as cheap as I can do it, and still keep the quality at least good enough to actually fly the crap out of it. I have heli's with this exact setup, that Ive been flying for over a year. No problems at all. Now please bear in mind...this is the lowest cost FUNCTIONAL heli. Its not the super hot, best thing out there....it is what it is. So if you are looking for a low cost option, that will just plain fly....this is your best bet in my opinion.

RE: Hirobo XRB PICS!!! and build info.
Hey guys, I know I havent been on here in a while....a long while. But just thought this was interesting. I stumbled across this thread, and thought about it. This thread was started in 2005 about the XRB as my first helicopter. Here we are in 2010, and ive since graduated to flying much more advanced helis. But I still to this day have my little XRB....and yes....I still fly it regularly. The little heli has never missed a beat over a period of 6 years. SIX YEARS...its still flying. Ive not replaced a single thing on it except for blades....actually, its still using the same lipo's that came with it. I figured it all out, and I have around 300 hours of flight time on the XRB over the last 6 years. HOLY COW....Hirobo sure can build a heli. I cant believe the motors have lasted that long... I wish I could say that for some of my other aircraft, and it still flys just as well as it did when I bought it. Still looks good too. The canopy shows a little wear, but the heli looks good.

RE: Hyperion Helios power and expectations
I have the 63e version. I used the recommended Hyperion motor and Hyperion ESC with it. Its got plenty of punch in my opinion. Im using a TP extreme 4s 4600mah lipo Here's its maiden flight if I remember correctly...sorry for the poor video..but maybe it will give you an idea of the vertical performance on the OEM setup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL6FU_NaJ4w Im not much of a pattern pilot, but it will do intermediate no problems. I havent tried the P sequences with it...

I know I havent been around in a LONG time....but Im still flying occasionally. Went to perry this past weekend and picked up a loaded exi 450 for $175 with a case. I think exi got a convert from align..they are really sweet heli's for the price. After flying this thing, I think Im gonna order a Exi 500.

The covering has been a problem on a lot of the CMP planes. We have giles that is getting recovered right now for that reason. Their covering sucks. The planes are built pretty well though. They are straight. They tend to be a little heavier than they could be.
If the gov't and the people didn't listen to illegal and legal immigrants, they wouldn't be here. They might not be able to vote, but their voice is loud and clear and people listen.
Unfortunatly...and thats part of the reason we have those issues and many others but thats for another thread.
If this was true the AMA would be mailing out policy voting mechanisms only to members, they don't, they use survey monkey and anyone can voice their opinion. Also if the AMA believed they should only listen to members, they wouldn't be in here constantly listening to what is said right here on this board and they frequent quite often. Whether they have "say" doesn't matter, because they are still heard and decuisions are made based on them. Case in fact ... the PPP, most AMA'ers that were asked their opinions were against the program, the numbers were posted publically. Problem is that "most AMA members" only makes up a small fraction of those that play with flying model toys and could eventually be members. You know and I know their voice is heard, why shouldn't it ... there is a reason they are not here and it's not a guess.
Prime example of why non-ama members opinions dont matter. Mis-information gets tossed around by backseat drivers. The AMA elections ARE held by mail out voting methods, and only members get ballots. AMA policy is voted on by our elected officials, its called the executive council and not by some survey. In all reality, non-ama folks spouting their opinions are like special interest groups lobbying for some pork bill. Their opinions are based on a "whats in it for me" aspect. They dont care about the AMA. All they want is a kickback. We have no obligation to listen to the opinions of people who have never supported us, and dont have our best interests at heart. Blathering on about what changes they want when they dont even have the guts to make an effort to change them other than spouting off at the mouth. I stick with my original statement. WORTHLESS. If you want to make changes, get up, sign up, pay your dues, and vote.....and dont expect sympathy if you dont.

RE: Horrace Cain vs Mark Smith
Stickbuilder... You are confusing me with my Father. My father is Bill Davison, the one that created and works on the D5 website. I have not posted in the D5 website that I can remember. I have no connection to it other than my dad involvement with it. I am Bryan Davison. I also have never discussed the VP issue with either Tony or my Dad, and also have not visited the D5 website in quite sometime. My opinions are purely my own. You are correct in saying that this is not a "new revelation" for me. Ive read hoss's posts for quite sometime on here, and have had strong opposition to his view of the parkflyer issues for a long time. I do consider Tony Stillman a friend, and I am very VERY pleased with the job he continues to do for us. Tony was at one time a sponsor for me, and he has been one of the most influencial people for me in this hobby. I dont always agree with him. As a matter of fact, we have had some pretty heated debates on certain topics from the club level and up. His insight on AMA matters has totally changed my view of things from time to time. I dont really know Red other than what Ive read online from him.

RE: Horrace Cain vs Mark Smith
Hoss, For the days of the Dave Brown era, clubs sat idle expecting the AMA leadership to handle getting new members. We failed to recognize that the clubs were and ARE our greatest untapped resource for promoting the hobby. Clubs pick and choose their members, and stuck to the "good ol boy" attitude of "if its not like us, it doesnt belong" and "lets stick together and forget the rest". It didnt work....period. We alienated those that didnt think like us, or fly like us. And it cost us dearly. And even though this thought process has failed us, we continue to see members with arms folded, smirk on face, eyebrows furled, and muttering to the new pilots "You aint good nuff" Your attitude towards modelers that arent like you disgusts me. The current president and EC has gone to leaps and bounds to change this, and get individual club members excited about the sport and even going above and beyond in promoting projects such as PPP to change public opinion of the AMA. Operating on the "something is better than nothing" premise and trying hard to work with modelers that felt alientated in the past. Yet some like yourself and others continue to pout like a little kid and say "Im NOT going to do it...NO" How can you ever recognize the potential of the electric flyers to grow, support and advance this hobby if you cant look over your own nose to see what they are capable of. We as the AMA CANNOT afford to pick and choose members based on flying style or aircraft selection. It just wont work. We have to end this firestorm of prejudice against pilots that are not like us. It cannot be allowed in our organization. It is a sickness that will destroy us. I cannot knowingly vote for someone who cant respect ALL aspects of the hobby. From the little foamies to indoor planes, to glow/gas, to FF, to gliders, to sailplanes, to jets, to helis....they ALL deserve to be part of the AMA. They are all valuable parts of our hobby, and are all capable of contributing to scientific study, and the hobby as a whole.

RE: Why I'm Supporting Mark Smith
STL, It has nothing to do with recruiting new members. No organization allows non-members to vote, why should we listen to persons who have no vested interest in the organization. The US doesnt allow non-citizens to vote, Corporations dont allow their competitors into the boardrooms. The simple fact is people who have never once got off their butts to support the organization should have ZERO say when it comes time for us to choose our leadership of OUR organization. Non-members dont have anything invested in the failure or successfulness of the AMA. Its easy to pick a side when you have nothing to lose.

RE: Horrace Cain vs Mark Smith
I have a question for Horrace. Do you intend to continue your anti-PPP views if you get elected and fight against the current President, and EC? Or have you changed your views of the PPP and decided to support the AMA's program in an effort to maintain the solidarity of the AMA? In your last statement, what exactly did you mean by "real" model aviation world? These questions are important, as we really need to know if the person up for consideration as the second in charge of our organization intends to support the AMA, or terrorize and sabotage it from within? RE: New Stand
Might I make a suggestion. Put velcro straps on the holders so that you can strap the fuselage into the stand. It would be nice for loading into a vehicle as it could be used to retain the aircraft inside the car/truck. On the base of the legs, weld a washer or small ring, so you can stake the stand down to the ground preventing tip-overs or wind damage. The wheel holders, should have pockets/chocks to keep the plane from rolling back and forth on them. Looks nice, I like it.

Ive been using lipos for years now. Dont let the "sky is falling" mis-information scare you away from lipos. Lipos can and are very safe to use. Lipo manufacturers have made tremendous leaps in preventing hazardous situations from happening. Ive literally seen lipos just about folded in half at the field, with no flames or anything else. In one instance, the pack was suprisingly still holding a charge. The key with lipos is to watch what your doing with them. As long as you dont damage them, overcharge them, short them, or let them become unbalanced or overdischarged, you will likely never experience a incident. I encourage you to try the lipos. Just remember you can blow up a NiCd too....

3D foamy had plans for a ultimate biplane around that size. I built one a long time ago, and it flew pretty well. At the time they didnt have the power options and lightweight equipment we do now...built on a park 180, and a light setup it would be a pretty nice slow indoor flyer.
