RE: Which brand of plane makes the best 3d er's
ORIGINAL: ameyam I dont want to open the discussion regarding profile v/s fuselage airplanes for 3D but my preference is a conventional fuselage. Could you suggest something in that config j.duncker ? Ameyam
Its funny how people just cant get past looks. I know a couple guys at the field who absolutely do not like how profiles look. Thats like saying you want to be a soccer player but would rather use a basketball to play instead of a soccer ball. My point is, you can accomplish 3D with either type of plane (profile or full fuselage) but the learning curves are complete opposites. I thought I could learn 3D with my Aeroworks Edge 540, but it wasnt until I got my OMP Edge 540 that I actually started getting better.

Either wrap the plane in saran wrap or use a pringles can as a muffler extension.

You are no longer a beginner when people ask you for help, then u are a novice. You are no longer a novice when people stop flying to watch you, then you are a expert. You dont qualify as an expert when people stop flying and watch you from the safety of their car, then you are a threat to humanity.

Its just preforated rubber matting that comes with tool boxes that goes in the drawer to keep the tools from sliding all over and keep the tools from scratching up the drawer.

RE: prop rpm question??
ORIGINAL: ro347
ORIGINAL: MetallicaJunkie maybe you should keep the 15x6 xoar....even though it is not on the ''reccomended'' props list........... you cant go smaller or else you'll have to increase your pitch, and you cant go bigger than 15 ....now that you have discovered the wood 15x6 are best now its time to experiment with different brands.....performance is what you want so dont even try a power point or zinger..........
So back to the original question...if i stay at 15 im at 8400 rpm..... if i go lower to 14.... I would gain in rpm. Now LETS say im able to achieve enough rpm with a 14 to have same amount of thrust..... whats better low rpm or higher at equal thrust? Im guessing higher.
Personally I would go for the bigger diameter over higher RPMs. The bigger the diameter of the prop the more air is moving the control surfaces to control the plane. Go with a light wood prop to make up for some RPMs and make spool uo speed quicker and also have less torque roll. Or another option is throw that monster 91 on the Pro Yak.[:D]

RE: 47
I just use the wood blocks that come with it and mount it above the fuselage. Use some good thin CA to get it in place then go back with some medium CA to fill any gaps. This also helps out with the throttle control rod going straight across from servo to throttle arm rather than at an angle if the servo is mounted in the fuselage. I have my throttle servo mounted like this on both my Pro Yak and Edge 540 and have no problems with it coming loose.

RE: AW .90-.120 YAK& EVO26cc OR YS110
If you go to the Aeroworks support forum and find the Yak 120 thread you will find tons of info. When I was planning on getting one of these I decided to go with the MLD-28. Others who were running glow were using the Saito 150's and 180's. Other gas engines being used were the SPE 26. So the Evo will propbably do just fine. Another option is the DLE-30. But check out that other thread.

RE: 47
I replaced the nylon wing bolt for a stainless steel one from homedepot. I just use a ratchet to tighten the wings together and the plane feels very sturdy. I just leave the wings together unless I need to do something inside that I cant do through the access panel. I glued my wings together on my Edge 540, but with a small car I can usually only transport one plane to the field, now with the Pro Yak I can take two if I take the wings off. So really its your own choice. Ive flown my Pro Yak on two occassions now and have about 8 flights on it, this plane is a blast to fly. With the Saito 82, hovering is sooooo much easier than with the Edge 540 and a 46AX. I have alot less toruqe roll with the Saito 82 and Xoar 14x4. Ive got the engine mounted all the way back on the rails and the battery mounted just behind the two wing tubes. The plane is very neutral inverted and my dry weight is 4.5 lbs. Also for those who are new to 3Ding, if you arent already running 6V battery packs you should do so. You want your servos as fast as they will go. My cheap Hitec servos are about .19 sec on 4.8v and .15 sec on 6v, the .4 sec faster speed with 6V makes a HUUUUUUGE difference when trying to learn to hover. With 4.8v battery it felt like I had to tell the plane what to do then it would do it, with 6V I just think it and it happens.

RE: 3D TRAINER - PROFILE???
Saito 125 with a bunch of mods to acommodate the larger engine. Throttle servo moved back to where the rudder servo goes, rudder servo moved back to the tail opposite the elevator servo. Balsa tray added behind wing bolts to mount battery further back. It flys hands off inverted without adding any weight to balance. I think Im at 3.75 in back for CG. Right now I have a 16x4 APC on it, I need to switch back to the 16x6 wood prop. My dry weight is 7.3 lbs.

RE: looking at getting a OMP PRO YAK
ORIGINAL: millertym2000 I am new to 3D, I've been flying my 50cc yak, but I still like to stay around 40 ft or higher. I still cant hold a hover for to long with out either climbing or the nose wanting to fall over. Will the 46 pull it straight up out of a hover or do you have to drop the nose to pull out?
Sounds like you are nose heavy, best way to check is fly inverted and let go of controls and if she dives you are nose heavy, if she climbs its tail heavy. Balance so the plane flys level inverted hands off. This is a very good starting point for flying 3D. Also I got more flights in on my Pro Yak this weekend and its a beast.

RE: 3D TRAINER - PROFILE???
I know what you mean about durability, earlier this year I wanted to switch from a APC 16x6 to a Vess(wood) 15x8on my Aeroworks Edge 540. Well, the turns out the plane was alittle nose heavy and as I was taxing to takeoff, it tipped over nose first and broke the prop. I paid about $20 with shipping for that prop.[:@]

RE: 3D TRAINER - PROFILE???
Its crazy how the lighter wood prop affects torque roll so much, with the 46AX and APC 12.25 x 3.75 I would be constantly fighting the torque roll just to keep the canopy facing me, now with the Saito 82 and Xoar 14x4, it just hovers with barely any aileron correction needed. I could definitely seeing myself getting into trouble now, this past weekend I was thinking to myself the next step is to do a tail touch on the ground. Ill make sure to get it on vid for you ro347, then you can get a profile and start having heart racing fun. It dont get really fun until you are on the edge.

Thats what I use, Xoar 13x4 on the 55AX and Xoar 14x4 on the Saito 82. I like them alot, like you said spool up is instant, and less torque roll since props are lighter. Also if anyone is looking to get a Saito 82 for $229, they are back in stock on horizonhobby, just checked.

RE: set up easy fly 40
First thing is to check your needle settings, did the person you got the motor from already tune the engine? After you get your engine settings verified or adjusted this is how u start the motor. fill up tank with glow fuel, (prime engine) put finger over muffler opening and turn prop over 4-6 times until fuel has entered carb. Put glow driver onto engine, double check transmitter throttle settings, and turn motor over either with chicken stick or electric starter. Also try youtube, someone might have put a video on how to start a glow motor on there. But for safety, make sure your prop is on very tight, make all your tuning adjustments from behind the prop, and try not to reach over your prop. and make sure your plane is unable to move, you can either tie it down or use metal stakes to hold it in place.

RE: 3D TRAINER - PROFILE???
I got a couple flights in today with the Pro Yak and Saito 82 combo. This plane is a blast to fly, Im getting used to the difference in the power curve between the 55AX and Saito 82. It takes some time to get used to, the sound from the Saito is soo much more quiet compared to the 55AX that sometimes I think Im not giving enough throttle to hover but the plane is hovering anyway. Also torque roll compared to the 55 is almost non-existent. I could be hovering for 5 seconds no aileron input needed at all then I might get a slight torque roll, but its nothing compared to the 55. I had a little trouble with the battery, somehow it came loose inside the wing and made its way towards the wing tip, luckily I had a safety clip connecting the two wires together. I noticed whenever I got into a hover I the plane kept wanting to lean towards the left wing and I needed a lot of rudder to correct this. Sure enough when I got the plane and picked it up I could hear the battery moving around inside the wing.

RE: looking at getting a OMP PRO YAK
With the bigger and lighter Xoar 13x4 on the 55AX vs the smaller and heavier APC 12.25x3.75 on the 46AX there is a huge difference in how much the plane wants to torque roll. There might not be too much torque roll for a novice 3D flyer, but for beginners the less torque roll the better. You wont have to worry about using the ailerons so much to fight off the torque roll and can focus more on throttle use and rudder elevator inputs.

RE: looking at getting a OMP PRO YAK
I think the 46AX is more than enough to get you started, but the problem I had with it was too much torque roll. So I switched to the 55AX with a 13x4 Zoar prop. Now I have better pull out power, quicker spool up and less torque roll. So if you can afford the 55AX go for it, but if not, 46 will be good. Also I never tried a 12x4 Xoar on the 46AX, it might be a good combo.

RE: AeroWorks Edge 540T 46-60?
ya I probably need to add more expo, its probably set less than 25%. I usually keep the expo low for 3D because it slows your reaction time down especially when you need it while hovering. I will try 3Ding again to see if I can do it with the AW Edge 540, if I find it to be too hard I will probably set the high rates to what the manual says for high rates instead of 3D rates.
