RE: RT65 or just another 65M trimaran
ORIGINAL: Sirit Dear Idealist, I have been using two layers of 125g/sqm glass, the weights of the gel coated floats are 135gram each, without gelcoat they are 90g each, the main hull is 10grams heavier. I think about simply glueing the two halves together with epoxy. [image]http://www.rcsails.com/images/rt65kitdetail1.gif[/image] [image]http://www.rcsails.com/images/rt65kitdetail3.gif[/image] Today I will start the build with setting the keel box I have laminated over the keel already Siri
Are you vaccuum bagging the hulls?

RE: Kiwi Mini40 Trimaran build log
ORIGINAL: manta29 Guess what, it floated!! On the first test sail, it actually went quite well. A few issues to sort with the rig, and the beams still flex when the rigging is cranked up, plus a vang is needed on the job boom, but in all quite suprising. Responds well, tacks ok, the leeward floats bow stays up, although the main bow looks to me set too low, again doesn't help when the whole thing isn't very stiff. sorry for poor quality pics File <img src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/image/paperclip.gif'' border=''0'' alt='''' /><img src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/image/paperclip.gif'' border=''0'' alt='''' />
How did you make the beams? Hulls look good.

RE: RT65 or just another 65M trimaran
Hi Sirit Molds look good. Curious how you build the rudder and fin in the molds? Are you just going to put a few layers of fibreglass or carbon in the molds and fill them with epoxy? Also, can you show the layout of the radio in the boat? What are you using for winch? Yann ps: i lived in bangkok when I was 13 years old for a year and half. Really enjoyed it. I learned to windsurf in Pattaya. Actually started my rc sailboat building in thailand too.

Dreamwakes, how do you intend to make the molds for fin and rudder? make 2 halves, and then join them after pulling out of the mold? I am trying to figure out the best way of making some myself. Yann

Hi Sirit, thanks for providing the plans. Were these generated in Autocad? if so, any chance of getting the dwg files? My 7 year old daughter wants me to build her a small tri. Mine is just too big for her too handle. thanks yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
Nice work on the beams. I've been thinking about doing something very similar. Was going to make a mold out of 1/2"x1" piece of balsa, and use 1/4 inch router bit to round back of arm and 1/2 inch router bit to round the front. Liking your idea of using jig for underside of arm. Your work as always is inspirational. yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
Geez, you are quite the detail guy, hoping that my work will come somewhat close to yours. Will be casting new hulls this week so that I can have nicer hull to deck joining. And try putting rig and fin further back. Also notice that you windsurf. I used to windsurf, but it's been over 10 years since I was really into it. going to get back into it this summer hopefully. RE: trimaran plans
Ernst Sailed my tri today for the first time. It's not entirely finished, ie, it needs to be sanded one more time and painted, but I just couldnt wait any longer. Here's a video of it sailing. Was taking video and controlling it at same time. :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfKrulmabX4 and some pics. Last one shows it about to nose dive right before i let the sails out. Yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
Got to take it out for an hour or so today. Sailed nicely, tracks very well without needing any trim. Unfortunately, the 1/2 inch carbon arms are too flexible, whenever a gust of wind hit, the bow of the main hull would nose down a bit (see last picture). Need to use stiffer arms, and a smaller jib may help. here's a video of the maiden voyage. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfKrulmabX4 and some pics. Now time to make another set of hulls. Also, next boat, will move the mast back an inch. yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
My approach to building the deck and joining it to the hull was: 1. Build a frame of the deck out of balsa wood and basswood, the frame follows the outline of the deck and has cross members. 2. on a sheet of mylar, lay down 2 layers of fiberglass cloth, soak it with epoxy, and squeegee out excess epoxy. 3. while the cloth is still wet, lay down the deck frame on top of the 2 layers of cloth. This way the deck frame gets a good bond to the deck. 4. when dry, peel off the mylar which makes the deck super smooth, trim off excess fiberglass to about 1-2 mm from the edge of the wood. 5. glue the edge of the hull to the wood frame and deck. Problem is that it is really hard to get the hull edge to conform to the deck frame and stick to it. Had to use a lot of tape to keep the joints together. and it got messy, ie got epoxy on the hulls which then required sanding. new approach will be the following. 1. Build a frame of the deck out of balsa wood and basswood 2. glue the deck frame to the hull using the same method you used to glue the joiner strips. 3. on a sheet of mylar, lay down 2 layers of fiberglass cloth, soak it with epoxy, and squeegee out excess epoxy. 4. while the cloth is still wet, put the hull down on top of the cloth. This should form a good bond between the 2 pieces and limits how much you have to touch the hulls and deck while epoxy is wet. Also limits how much finishing you have to do afterwards. Yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
Here's a picture of it with the rig off of a marblehead. Rig is so tall that I couldnt put the second sidehull on in the living room. Still needs to be sanded and painted, but am sailing it tomorrow, after 3 months of work I am anxious to see it sail. Hopefully will be able to take some pictures of it sailing. thinking may need to luse arger diameter carbon tubes and drill hole through them to mount them to hulls, too much play using pipe straps. Still working on building the swept forward and back arms. May pick up some carbon fiber tomorrow to cast 2 side hulls. Learned a few things in gluing decks to hulls, will try a different approach for the hull to deck joining process. yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
ORIGINAL: TBK I will epoxy in a pine joiner strip inside along the seam that will overlap the joint and this will act to stiffen the moulds as well as provide a good joint. The ends will be closed off with pieces of balsa/thin plywood cut to fit and then the seams, nose & stern will be glassed and faired true. I wiil detail all this in the build log as I go. TBK
Ok, that's what I thought you were going to do. Wanted to see if there was some other method to use. Building my own tri and going to glue deck to hull tomorrow. Might be sailing it by this weekend. yann

RE: Nightmare MKVII Trimaran Build Log
Very nice start to your build. Looks very meticulous in your process. Good luck, keep us posted. can you post pictures of how you joined the 2 36" sheets of balsa to cover the 48" length of your build? I am not quite getting from your description how you joined them. I used 2 part foam to fill the space between the sections, but the foam has been contracting over the last few days and distorting the plug for the side hull. I am going to need to build a new plug for the side hull using tried and true balsa planks over sections method. Yann

RE: trimaran plans
ORIGINAL: mini40 It looks like the building season has really begun! Today FOUR more persons asked for the free selfbuilding plans of the "Nightmare Mk. VII". Makes 24 overall. Just send a mail to: ernst.zemann@gmx.net, to get your own free printable .pdf- copy. These are three .zip-files inkluding complete hull drawings, rudder, centerboard, rc- installation and rigging - as .pdf-files and .dxf-files for Autocad as well. @Kzimmerman: Your copy has been sent to you! The left picture was made by TomTest: During the german "Aartalsee-Multihull-Meeting" in 2007, The left boat (yellow and purple) was designed and built by Karl Schmidt (nickname SKAUT) from AUSTRIA, who just won the latest Multihull-race series in FRANCE! The boat on the right right side was designed by Peter Scharmer (nickname WIESEL) from Germany. The picture on the right side was made by Eric Gielen: This is the carbon/epoxy prototype of the "Nightmare Mk. VII, which was designed by me - Ernst Zemann, Vienna/Austria - and was originally built by me, together with Eric Gielen at Austria - completed with the great help of Karl Schmidt, who took a lot of care for very good sets of sails! Youtube video of the "Nightmare Mk. VII": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK2TdqjnzeY Taken at her maiden testtrip seven moths ago - 2:19 min. Although Eric had never sailed a rc-model trimaran before that date (!), it is clearly visible how easyly and securely this design can be sailed on one float.
the boats are beautiful, hope my boat comes out and sails as nice as yours do. Yann
