RE: WACO YMF
Okay, apparently there's interest. Got a 'PM' already asking about pricing, but I guess I should respond here as well. I was planning on pricing at $350, plus shipping, based on RCU's 'Blue Book' prices. Unless someone really wants to pay out $500+ like on ebay! Not one to turn down a good price, but that's just nuts! Cheers - Barry

RE: WACO YMF
Dang - I just looked up that 1/5th scale Pica kit that was on ebay..... apparently they are starting to go for a premium price indeed! I have the same Pica kit that I've been planning on listing somewhere when I got around to it - probably here on RCU rather than ebay. Don't really plan on building the 1/5 scale anymore since I am working on a Barth 1/4 scale Waco. I had the 1/6th scale Pica Waco for a lot of years and enjoyed the heck out of it. Let someone talk me out of that one and decided to up-size to the 1/5th scale so I bought a kit.... 'life' got in the way and it didn't get built, then along came the 1/4 scale and I decided to go that route as over the ensuing years I've gotten into larger models. Anyway, the kit is NIB... opened a couple times to look, but that's it. Been stored in my shop/basement under climate controlled conditions, so it is definitely in "as new" condition. Any interest out there at a fair price? Merry Christmas to all - Barry

RE: WACO YMF
Getting pretty deep into building my Barth 1/4 scale Waco.... coming along nicely. albeit kind of slow. Currently building the outer wing panels. In the hardware bags for both the upper and lower wings there are 25 (in each bag) small brass nails - parts #137 & 237...... can't find any reference to these nails on the plans or in the written instructions. Have several ideas of what they could be used for, but nothing solid. Anyone out there know what these nails intended usage is?? Thanks for iny info you may be able to provide! Barry

RE: Saito 300 on CH Ignition and 1/3rd Sopwith Pup Video
Nice video - the saito sounds great! So is that ignition on glow fuel? Or did you convert it over to gas? Just curious, I have a Saito 300 I've always just run on glow, and I just picked up one of the new Saito 57cc gas engines...... never really had considered converting the 300 over to ignition..... neat idea! Also - how well does the Saito 300 smoke (assuming you're still running glow fuel)? I was concerned that on glow the exhaust wouldn't be hot enough to really make good smoke, that's part of the reason I went with the 57cc gasser for my current project wanted the 4C sound, but with the "gas" heat to make good smoke. Keep the good videos coming! Barry

RE: WACO YMF
Barth 1/4 scale question(s) I have the kit and am about ready to 'begin the journey', but have a few questions before starting. At first glance the plans look great - a very nice job. However, as you study the plans and instructions with more of an 'eye' toward the actual build, it becomes apparent that by design there seems to be no access to the fuselage interior. No upper hatch like is so common on a lot of the modern ARFs. No removable lower-wing center section, as is the access point on the Pica Wacos and the new GP ARF. Seems like not only a good idea, but pretty much a necessity to have interior access to install and maintain your radio gear, batteries, fuel system, etc.... So how are others out there addressing the 'access situation'? Have considered the following: > Make the bottom wing center section removeable. Not really an easy task as designed with the FG fairings completely wrapping the wing, it would make for numerous complications.... doable, but not pretty! Probably be easier to ditch the FG fairings and go back to built-up wood fairings like on my old 1/6th scale Pica Waco. > Make an upper hatch from the rear of the aft cockpit to the front former just in front of the forward cockpit. Again, doable I suppose, would require some hefty re-engineering of the existing design. Concerns about structural integrity, especially with regard to the upper wing mounting. > "Ship in a bottle" approach..... do everything through the cockpit floors. I have looked through the various indexed sections of this thread as kindly sorted out on page #1, have not seen anything addressing this access question...... and with almost 14,000 replies.... well, not too practical to just go browsing! Appreciate any suggestions any of you may have. I am not at all new to building - been at it 30+ years, so I have no doubt I'll come up with something.... but I figure 'why re-invent the wheel' if someone already has cracked this nut! Thanks all Barry Hall

RE: CAN SOMEONE IDENTIFY THIS PLANE?
It's definintely a "Taube", probably from a Balsa USA kit. They offer a couple of different sizes: > The 62" 40-sized http://shop.balsausa.com/product_p/439.htm > And an 84" 90-sized http://shop.balsausa.com/product_p/394.htm From the photo and the wankel engine on the front, I'd guess maybe yours is the 40-sized version? Although there were a few other Taube's out there available from plans. Hope this helps Barry

RE: WACO YMF
Question for all you Waco fans out there I recently received [most] of a Barth 1/4 scale YMF-5 kit (still awaiting the fiberglass parts and wingtubes... hope to see them by the end of next week...). Question is regarding balance - trying to decide on an engine for my Waco and wondering what any of you out there that may have built the kit had for "CG results" what engine are you running, and how did it balance (right on, nose weight needed, tail weight needed.....). Curious about overall weight as well. Only recall seeing one post that specifically mentioned the balance - seems like one fellow used a Zenoah G-62 and ended up adding 18oz of weight to the tail. Seems odd for a bipe, but okay! Choices I'm looking at at the moment - Saito 300 twin 4C glow, Saito 57cc twin 4C gas, soon-to-be-released Evolution 77cc 7-cylinder radial 4C (saw at Toledo, I believe these are basically former Seidel designs going to be made in India for Horizon?). Lightest of the bunch is the 300 glow... plus I already own it (big plus!). Just not sure that the glow engines will smoke all that well, haven't had good success in the past versus a gas engine. That would lean me toward the 57cc gasser.... but it is a pound heavier than the glow engine. If I need nose-weight no problem. If it tends to come out nose-heavy, then lighter would be better. But a 7-cylinder radial would be awesome, even if it is glow and might not smoke so well..... but it's the heaviest of the three! Don't mean to ramble, just appreciate any feedback you may have on engine choices and resultant weight needed for balace on the Barth 1/4 scaler. Oh - long time Waco fan - had a 1/6'th scale Pica YMF for about 13 years before someone talked me out of it. Still have a NIB kit for the Pica 1/5th scale that I've been sitting on for about 10 years, but decided to hold off on that one in lieu of the 1/4 scale. Oh - and built the Dumas walnut scale stick & tissue Waco for indoor R/C using Parkzone Sukhoi gear this past Winter. Thanks for any info you can provide!! Barry Hall :)

RE: Saito FG57T 57cc gas engine question
I have the Saito 300 twin glow engine - it runs pretty much the same way as your gasser and always has. The single carb and manifold just has never fed the cylinders equally - one is always a bit richer than the other. Two other guys that I fly with also have the `300.... same with their's. Had the engine a lot of years, run it a fair amount.... seems to be okay that way. It appears that the gas version may be the same way? The "solution" for the glow engine was the twin-carb version of the engine so each cylinder can be tuned separately. Both the single and dual-carb versions are both still offered by Saito so I guess it's never been so much of an issue that they would discontinue the single-carb. For the single carb engine all we could ever do is set it so that the more-lean cylinder was rich enough to be "good", and the richer-cylinder was... well.... "richer"! Keep us posted - I've been thinking of getting one of the new 57cc Saitos and am interested in what you may find out. Thanks Barry

RE: Balance Tap
I made up a harness to try that exact same thing a while ago. It did work, but the problem was that since the packs run separately in their actual operation when you try to charge them as a single 4S pack the "pack" shows up as being way out of balance. Makes sense since there's no way the two indivdual 2S packs would ever be equally discharged. I was using a Cellpro 10 - it did eventually did charge the pack (and the cells were indeed back in balance). But for the time it took it would have been faster to charge the two packs independently as two 2S packs. Good luck - & let us know how it goes. Barry

RE: 1/3 Great Planes cap580 Splats peeling off
The 'splats' are just cut out of regular Monokote and ironed on. Trace the old ones onto a piece of paper, get the appropriate Monokote color(s) and get to cutting! I use fresh #11 blades and cut on a piece of glass to get clean cuts. Could also be applied with their trim solvent, but youd' have to work awfully fast! The lemon dish-soap/water mix as an application fluidwould be better.... but I would just use a trim iron and iron them on. Not as hard to do as you might initially think - give it a try! Good Luck! RE: JR 10X converted to 2.4 with spektrum
The conversion to 2.4GHz has nothing to do with any latency you might see due to a channel's position in the frame rate. If you are running a mix on your 10x now, on 72MHz, and not seeing any sort of issue, then you will not see it on the 2.4GHz either. Actually, supposedly, the frame rate is supposed to be faster on the 2.4GHz systems. With the conversion module systems, according to the JR Support guys, the 2.4GHz is faster, but since you have to run your Tx in PPM mode (as opposed to PCM mode) with the conversion module - the net "speed" stays about the same as the PCM system..... maybe just a tad faster (but that last "maybe" may just have been the Marketing team!) Anyway - bottom line - if you are running that mix now without a latency issue you will NOT have a latency issue with the 2.4GHz. Cheers - Barry

RE: JR 10X converted to 2.4 with spektrum
I have set up quite a few aircraft with dual elevator servos on the 10X with the 2.4GHz conversion module. Have not seen any latency when setting up the mix for the dual servos. Arre you considering setting up using a separate Program Mix of your own or setting up in screen 22 (I believe) for dual elevator servos? I always use the built-in dual elevator servo mix under screen 22 and have had no latency issues. Good luck! Barry

RE: QQ Beast Engine????
Flying my "legacy version" QQ Pitts Python - basically the same airframe - with a BME 116 and a pair of MTW75 canisters. Beyond plenty of power.... accelerates going stright up. Great combination and the lightweight BME was a great aid for balancing the plane. Also assemble another one for a buddy, his with a DA-100, and the batteries (Rx and ignition) all had to go way back to the front of the stabilizer to acheive balance. My ignition battery is on the motor-box and my Rx batteries are right behind the gas tank. DA-120 is supposed to be a bit lighter than the DA-100L, so that would help some too. Below are a couple of Joe Nall shots of my re-covered/re-finished QQ Python BJH

RE: Single battery setup question?
While the debate goes on about the "one for all" battery or not, in your specific circumstance I'd recommend against it. One of the few gripes about the Zenoah G-20 is the comparitive high current drain of the stock ignition. Pretty much every review I've read on the G-20 has mentioned the high draw compared to pretty much anything out there. Not bad, it runs great.... just that the ignition is "thirsty". Also, the instructions for the G-20 are very clear not to run anything but a 4.8V ignition battery - what's the output voltage of the devices mentioned above, and are they adjustable if higher than 4.8-5.0V? Even with the electronic 'gadget' in there to isolate any 'noise' from the rest of the system, all of that current draw from the ignition is still going through your receiver. Can it take it... probably. Is it a risk that I would take...... no. Especially in a 2.4GHz system drop the voltage a little low and you get a reboot. Ohm's law being what it is, that higher current draw could accomplish just that. Just my 2-cents worth..... BJH

RE: Wire Source?
I have a spool of 22ga, 2-pair, shielded twisted-pair cabling. Has a total of 4 wires (2-pair), plus the foil shielding and the shielded ground wire. Colors of the wire-pairs is red/black and green/white. The above poster is correct, 'communications' wire does not have nearly the strand-count as the servo extension wire we're used to using. Nor is the cable as flexible as non-shielded silicon wire. I have used it for shielded in-wing aileron extensions and elevator extensions where the wiring doesn't really need to "flex" much once it's installed. Usually I solder on non-shielded regular HD servo extension 'pigtails' for the last few inches of the extension to allow for the 'flexing' to take place there. Have done this on quiet a few giant scale gassers up to 35% or so with no problems. Since switching most everything over to 2.4GHz systems, I've pretty much swithced over to non-shielded 22ga or 20ga twisted silicon extensions with no issues. If the cable I have would work for you we can probably work something out to get some to you. Let me know. Cheers - Barry Hall :)

RE: plans wanted
Cleveland Models & Supply has plans for the Aeronca C3 ranging from 13" to 108" spans http://www.clevelandairline.com/ASP/PRODUCT.asp I believe that they basically have one or two sizes of plans and then enlarge or reduce them to get the other sizes. So you may have to do some re-engineering... not hard to do, just takes some time. Also, I think a lot of their stuff was originally rubber or free-flight - so again, may take some design work to get a set of plans for R/C. Good luck! Barry :)

RE: BME 44 info
The threaded portion of the BME prop shaft is 8 x 1.25mm. Also, there is a 'shoulder' at the base of the prop shaft (part of the hub) that is 7/16". Your spinner backplate will need to be drilled for that, and the back of your prop will need to be 'relieved' a bit for clearance as well. Cheers - Barry [8D]

RE: BME 116 how different than 115?
Different ignition too - the original BME 115 came with a Falkon igntion, I believe a CH ignition was optional. The "new" BME 116 comes with an RCExcel ignition. I sent my BME 115 in for the 'upgrade' to the latest & greatest BME 116 - new reed housing (aluminum & 'stuffed'); new carb - WGA7 on mine, although I hear they also may use the WGA9, apparently no much diifference; and a new ignition (RCExcel). Night & day difference in performance - hand starts easily (had to use a starter most of the time before), runs great, transitions great, no mid-range issues, no loading up when inverted at lower throttle settings, crazy top-end power..... NOW it's a great engine! Was pretty much ready to use it as a doorstop before! Barry

RE: Titanium mufflers?
I have a set of the S&W Titanium mufflers. Tried them on a DA-100. Fairly quiet operation, engine ran fine, didn't seem to have any issues temperature-wise, but just didn't seem as powerful as we thought it should be. Breaking it in with a Menz 27x10 prop, couldn't get above 5700 rpm. Took the mufflers off one day and ran open exhaust - went up to something like 6200 rpm. Switched over to a set of 'standard' mufflers from SlimLine. Definitely a bit noisier, but still in the 6100+ rpm range. The output end of the mufflers looks like it's a titanium washer welded to the end of the 'pipe'. That could probably be drilled out and reduce the back-pressure a bit. Might get some RPM gain, but it would then be louder. Bottom line: Light - yes. Quiet - reasonably so, not as quiet as canisters. "Minimum" power loss...... define minimum. I saw about a 500 rpm gain by switching to a standard muffler..... I'd call that more than "minimum", but maybe it's just me! So...... I have $300 worth of S&W Titanium mufflers sitting there on the bench doing nothing..... if anyone wants to try out a set for a DA-100, first $50 gets them!! Or, might be an interesting experiment for a couple of DA-50's!! Cheers. Barry :)

RE: JR / Spektrum rx ext's w/ disconnects
The 'mid-line disconnect' connectors used on the "factory" extensions are standard 'servo' connectors, so if you have "the parts & the smarts" to put your own connectors wherever you want them in the extension, I don't see why that would be an issue. As for the length, per the instructions it says not to exceed 36" extensions. Don't recall right off exactly which receiver's instructions I was looking at as I have several different models of Spektrum/JR receivers. But I do remeber reading that since I had the same question.
