RE: Sukhoi SU-26 MX build
I added 1/2" to the elevators also. I think I added about 3/4" to the rudder. With the 78" wing span (split wings) I decided to make all the surfaces slightly larger in order to keep things closer to the original proportions. All I can say is that the plane flies awesome, has a roll rate that's really too much for me and the plane can do moderate 3D (at least my friend can 3D it). Pop tops are very good too. The rudder has plenty of authority and the plane flies very straight with just a little rudder coupling. I did however drop the stablizer down. It sits under the top of the fuse (in the cut out area) which I think may have made the flying characteristics a little more neutral.

RE: Sukhoi SU-26 MX build
I built one heavily modified. Two wing halves with wing tube. Airfoiled stabilizer. Extended the fuse 3". Made a removeable canopy. Oversized the elevators and Rudder and the ailerons go inboard one more bay. DLE 30 for power. Flies awesome. Mine is a little tail heavy with a single elevator servo under the canopy. The one thing I can tell you is to beef up the engine box. Not so much at the fire wall (just pin that), but where the box attaches to former "A". After about 80 flights, the box tore away from Former "A" on the two sides and the bottom. Luckily I didn't lose the plane and it was easily fixed.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Because this isn't a 3D bird, building it super light isn't that important. I would aim for a weight that would give you good verticle performance with the 20cc, but it doesn't have to be ballistic. You won't be hovering this plane if built stock. Mine weighs in at 9.2 with a YS 110 and I think it flies awesome.

My wheels are on the leading edge and not a problem at all flying off grass. I'm a novice and I never nosed over yet! What weight are you shooting for with the DLE 20 up front?

RE: Could not start NIB YS115S
Petec, good question. Don't know why I put my finger on the exhaust. Old habit I guess. I'll try without. I usually stop flipping when I feel a little fuel coming out the exhaust. This way I know the combustion chamber is wet. Other than that, I use the same method that you do. Works great. These engines are a breeze to start once the fuel gets up to the engine. My tanks are all on the CG so the fuel has about a foot to travel on that first start.

RE: Could not start NIB YS115S
Mine never want to start easily on the first start of the day because the carb is dry. My method is as follows: 1st option - borrow someone's electric starter (I don't own one). Second option: Open throttle, hold finger on exhaust port, and flip about 20 times until you hear the squishy sound and you get the fuel drip from the exhaust port. She normally starts in 3-5 flips after that. Don't forget to drop the throttle first. I did that a few times and it scares the s#@& out of you! Subseqent starts of the day are usually on the first flip with the chicken stick.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi SU-26
I chose Bigal airfoil #1.[:D] I wanted to beef up the strength of the stab because history showed it to be a weakness with big engines up front, and I like the look of the airfoiled stab. All I did was build the stab as per the plans, and then made my own ribs. They are identical throughout the length of the stab. I split the ribs lenghwise and glued them to the top and bottom of the stock stab, added a balsa square for the leading edge, and some flat balsa stock for the trailing edge, then sheeted it with 1/16 balsa. Sanded it all into shape and that's it. Frankly, making the elevator mate up to it was much more work, especially the counter balance portion. Because I have only flown the plane very gently to this point, I can only tell you that the plane tracks really well. As good as or better than my Goldberg Extra, and better than my QQ 69" yak.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi SU-26
Mine was from a kit. Took all winter to build. One mod leads to another and another and another. Wasn't easy. I have the goldberg extra, (love that plane), but don't like lugging the one piece wing around. So after building the wing halves, decided to do the tube thing on the Suk. Came out much better than I thought. Very solid. Because the WS is 6" longer I just spliced in 2-1/2"" on the fuse just forward of the turtle deck. The gasser extends 1-1/4" longer with stock standoffs out front. The airfoiled stab was a royal PITA, but the plane tracks great, maybe better than the extra which is a great flying bird. Plus I heard the stab is a weak point on this plane with the big engines up front. Better keep an eye on it. Some put flying wires on. That 140 should pull it like a freight train. I got a YS 110 S on the extra and it's more than enough power on a only slightly smaller airframe. Some build pics attached.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi SU-26
Awesome job on your Sukhoi! I just finished mine late spring. I have DLE 30 on highly modified kit. I don't believe I have a heat issue, but I did block off the top 1/3 of the cowl opening and put in some of what I'll call louvre / air dams underneath. Don't know if it's doing anything but it is what it is. I have no belly pan. The plane has two wing halves, with tube. A removable canopy on top. The wingspan is 78 (versus 72), lengthened the fuse to stay in proportion to the WS, and airfoiled stabilzer. Only gentle flying as the gasser isn't broken in (less than a gallon), but she flies and tracks really good. I would do what you said and maybe block off some of the intake where it doesnt' flow over the engine head. That cowl opening is so big, there's no way all that air can flow out efficiently. BTW, if you don't mind I think I steal a page out of your book and do something like you did on my cowl. Mine is plain Jane and couldn't quite decide what to do with it. Also, nice touch with the wing fairings. Looks real scalelike. My plane weigh 11.8 lbs. What did yours come in at?

RE: Building
Building late at night. Using the 30 minute epoxy getting the stab on just right, lining it up perfectly, then bam one of those little gremlins shot a bolt of lightning and knocked the power off in the neighborhood. Sitting in total darkness, just knowing that that stab wasn't quite perfect. A very unlightening experience.

RE: adding wing tubes?
Funny you should ask. I just completed a Goldberg Sukhoi and added a wing tube. It came out great. I put in slight dihedral. My goal was to have the top of the wing perfectly flat, and all the taper of the wing on the bottom. To do that, when I cut the wing tube holes in the ribs, I maintained a constant distance from the top spar. It wasn't that difficult to do. The sukhoi has a similar wing span (72.5"). I purchased a 3/4" x 30" carbon tube from TNT, that worked perfectly. See the pics, they expain it better than I can.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Just an observation here. This plane is not a 3D plane. Mine is 9.2 lbs and it flies very well powered with YS 110. A friend of mine who flies IMAC, prefers my CG Extra to his Extreme flight Extra for the IMAC sequence. He believes it's because his 3D capable plane is too light and therefore doesn't track as well for precision flying. In his words, "It takes more inputs to keep my plane on track, than the CG Extra." With that being said, why would one want to go through all that extra effort to lighten when it very well may not make flight characteristics any better, maybe even worse.

RE: Sukhoi SU-26 MX build
I will be putting a DLE 30cc gas in mine. I have two wings like Pacorro. I lengthened the fuse by 4 inches total - 2.5 inches behind the wing and 1.5 inches in nose area. My wingspan is 78" with the two wings. I hope this balances okay with the 30cc.

RE: Sukhoi SU-26 MX build
I heard from several that the horizontal stabilizer should have flying wires to prevent issues back there. I plan on incorporating them on my build. I cannot tell you if sheeting the elevator will help flutter problems. Sorry.

RE: whats the best beginner traner kit to buy?
If you're on a budget, try picking up a used simulator. Look in the marketplace or on ebay. IMO a well designed and well built large wingspan, hence larger plane, is easier to see, and easier to fly.

RE: YS 110fz lacks of power
Hi, I have a related question. I own the 110 fz. I use the 16 x 6 xoar and it works great. Flies the plane fine for my style of flying. However, I took the engine out of my 9.1 pound CG extra and put it in an 7.8 lb bird. For a replacement I got the 110FZS version. Does it take the same prop, or should I use something bigger? Thanks.

It could be the cowlyou have is the issue that goldberg put in the kits at one point. My kit came with the white fiberglass cowl. It has worked very well for me.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi restarted
Moondog. I did a search on this plane on RCU and found a few posts like this one: I've put one of these kits together.it pretty much straight forward build. it flys great.lands slow and easy with no wing tip stalling.still getting used to plane. The only quirks i had was after flying and looking at trim settings, the elevator was trimmed down quite a bit. after finding a few sights and reading about other peoples planes.the hor.stab should be set up at the front at about one degree positive. Several other posts said that Goldberg made an adjustment on the newer kits. Looks like Goldberg put the fix in on the later kits. Or maybe you just got lucky.[:D] You should go buy a lottery ticket today. After looking at my fuse parts, my plane will definitely come out with a positive incidence on the Horiz stab.

RE: Goldberg Sukhoi restarted
Hi, I have one of these still in the box. 2nd edition, but most of the parts are die cut. Question for you. Did your stab come out with some positive incidence. From the pictures, it looks like maybe there is. The specs show none. My kit looks like it will build with some positive also. Anyone know what's up with that?
