RE: Futaba 12FGA: Programming for Multi-Engined Aircraft
Wow, this is all pretty cool CorsairJock. I've got a couple of twins I've been flying with my Futaba 8UA. I bought a 12 FG for myself for Christmas and am about ready to maiden my first plane on it, a BUSA 1/2 scale Sopwith Pup. I'm going to be changing planes over to the 12 FG though and I like your elegant twin programing. I saw a much simpler version on the Futaba Flyers Club, but I'm going to give your approach a try. Hopefully I can get everthing set up the same. Thanks for the effort and the post.

Thanks Ed, that's just what I was looking for. This kit was just given to me, free! So I'm excited to get going on it. From what little I've found about it, it seems to be a good flyer. Thanks again! Phil

Dream 110 instructions?
Hi all, I've just come into possession of an old Planes Plus Dream 110 kit. It came without the instructions. It looks pretty straight forward but there are a few bits I could use some explaination on. Does anyone out there have a set of instructions for this kit. It's no longer marketed and the old web site has long been closed down. Here's a picture of the bits I'm wondering about. There are several laser cut plywood bits and a couple of carbon fiber pieces that I'm wondering where they go. Any help out there?

RE: Parts compatibility for Saito FA65
Pete, Saito uses Alpha Codes to designate the engine application as shown in this chart [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Articles/Article.aspx?ArticleID=1161]Code Chart[/link] The parts you have listed do indeed fit your engine but you can't rely on the part numbers like you have suggested.

RE: Life of a glow plug?
I found that one trick is to get the glow plug off the engine quickly and don't advance the throttle until you take it off.
I've been running a Magnum 1.60 twin 4 stroke for several years with the glow on at all times for the entire flight. I have yet to change either plug in this engine. The idea that leaving the battery heat on the plug shortens their life seems completely unfounded to me. BTW, this is a cowled in application and the simple switch on glow set up makes starting easy and reliability unbeatable. No problem with plug life either...[:D]

RE: Need Magnum LS Needle
The low speed needle is prevented from rotating only by the tension of the o-ring that also seals it in it's bore. Once the o-ring gets old and hard, it exerts little if any tension against the wall of the bore and then due to vibration of the engine running it can just walk out. Since most of us don't fool with the idle needle once it's set, this problem can sneek up on you without you knowing it until the needle starts walking. Unfortunately, yours came out completely.

RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build
Jim, I noticed that plane set down with conviction too. Mine is nothing like that! Mine is a wonderful flyer, don't get me wrong, but the landing approaches are very floaty. If I land using flaps, (which I normally do) it will stay aloft floating along for ever. If you've ever landed a Sig 4 star, that's what it reminds me of. I still love it and it's a bit hit at the field.

The amonia is supposed to make it penetrate the wood better. I'm with you though dog, it stinks so bad that I've always used just water. If the amonia really makes a difference, I wouldn't really know myself.

I wasn't crazy about the wheels in the interior kit anyway, plus they didn't match the pictures I had taken of the full scale plane. So I made both of mine back when I was working on that sort of thing.

RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build
Hi FSUfan, The 1.70 radial has worked fine in the Stinson. The instructions caution against doing aerobatic flying with this plane unless you beef it up. I built mine stock so I don't do aerobatic maneuvers with it. I like to fly it in a scale like manner anyway. I think the 1.70 has plenty of steam for the plane in any case and the sound is of course wonderful. Go for it!

RE: 07 TopFlite Stinson build
I just stumbled across this thread and thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my plane. This was the longest build I ever undertook, mostly because I stalled around a lot. Actually, I had it framed the first building season and worked on scale details for the next several. It has operable landing lights (they deploy from the under surface of the wing) navigation lights and a detailed interior. It's been finished and flying now through the second flying season. Great flying plane! Mine is powered by a Saito 1.70 radial. It has a full scale pilot made in my likeness and the color scheme was taken from a full scale plane that frequents our local air show. When I was trying to settle on a color scheme, I emailed every Stinson owner I could locate and asked them if they would photograph their plane if I sent them a disposable camera. I got only one reply, and my model now looks like his plane. I later discovered he attended our air show with it and was able to take lots more photos. Anyway, here's the pics. RE: Magnum 1.60 twin
I have one that is on a 1/4 scale Fokker DR-1. I use an 18 x 6 prop which is probably a bit big but it has always run well and very smooth. The 18 dia prop looks better on my triplane. The plane is at least 6 years old and I fly it regularly. I use 10% nitro and 18% lube which is 1/2 castor 1/2 klotz (Sig 4 stroke fuel). It has run great since day one and like w8ye says above, I never fool with it. Just start it up and fly, no needle diddling. In my opinion, the OS isn't worth the extra money.

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
I'm not a big fan of most ARFs but when I saw this one last year at Rosemont I figured I would eventually get one and I have. I figure the whole point of building ARFs is to get it done quickly. If I wanted to overcome the scale issues brought up here, I'd just take the time to build one myself. The kit seemed pretty good to me but I do have a couple of issues. The first is with the covering. The covering on the bulkhead in front of the lower wing is trimmed so closely that the wood is exposed when the wing is installed. You can see the wood showing in the picture. If you mount the muffler as the directions indicate then this will be in the path of the departing exhaust. I added some covering to completely shield the wood. This would be pretty easy to fix though in the kit. Sig, are you listening? The other issue I have is with the mounting of the wheels/wheel pants. The axle acts as a spring which passes through a plastic bushing in the sheet metal landing gear. The wheel is captured between 2 wheel collars on this spring. The wheel pant is however mounted on the sheet metal gear itself. When the gear flexes, there is relative movement between the axle and the gear, so the relationship between the pant and the wheel changes. This all fits very closely too, so the wheel can drag on the pant. I haven't re-engineered this to fix it but it may need attention when I actually start flying it. If it ever quits raining here, I'll give it a try pretty soon.

RE: Top Flight DC-3/C-47
That's a great article, thanks for posting it. I see they also tested the model with .26 4 strokes and while they said this is the smallest engines they would recommend, it did fly well. Since that's exactly what I'm planning to do on my rebuild, I'm glad to see the concept has already been confirmed.

RE: Top Flight DC-3/C-47
I never had any problem with torque on take off. I had .40 2 strokes on mine which seemed like way too much power to me though. It flew like a pylon racer. I lost mine to an engine flame out at low power and it rolled over and died before I could react. I should have pulled the throttle back on the remaining engine to tame the stall and get it flying again. I still have the back portion of my fuse but my wing is toast. I'm planning to rebuild it and plan to put .26 4 strokes on it this time. It flies good on the wing and was easy to land. My only problem with take offs was that the engines didn't come up to speed equally and it would yaw more than the rudder could compensate for. I want mine to fly a lot slower closer to full throttle and it should be a good bit lighter this time. Good luck with your project.

RE: Sig's new Waco SRE
Bad news on availability of the new Waco. I just got an email from SIG indicating the plane has now been delayed until June 15th. I hope none of you guys are in a hurry. [8|] They said the manufacturer has experienced a balsa supply problem and wet conditions in South America have delayed new shipments of balsa. They indicated we could expect ALL ARF manufacturing from China to be delayed because of this issue. [&o]

I'm flying a Saito 1.70 on a Top Flite Stinson SR-9. The plane has always been an attraction at our field and the engine adds to that. It runs great is extremely smooth, starts very easy, and has a sound you have to hear to appreciate. I love mine.

RE: Saito 170 3 Cylinder Radial Questions
Seems like different plug suggestions may be cast in doubt by some but I'll still give you my experience any way. I was breaking in my 170 radial this spring with the stock (McCoy) plugs and Sig 10% 4 stroke fuel. I had a terrible time with both bottom cylinders dropping out. We have another fellow in our club who had been running the 450 radial who had similar problems when he first started running his. He recommended to me the Saito plugs and Wildcat 15% synthetic fuel. I changed my plugs and fuel at the same time and it has run perfectly ever since. I can turn the glow off once it's started and let it idle for 5 minutes and it will still throttle back to full instantly. I have since run out of the 15% fuel and tried Omega 10% and was dropping a cylinder again in the air. I can relight it by throttling back but it, of course, makes me nervous. I don't mean to hijack your thread but if somebody knows how to get them to run reliably on 10%, I'm interested. I usually run 10% in everything and haven't had problems with any other 4 strokes including other Saitos, OSs and Magnums. My radial has comparatively low time on it. Maybe an hour on the test stand and now 15 flights on the Stinson. I was convinced that 15% fuel was going to be a necessity.
