RE: RCV SP Engines
Hello Bob.... I have used an RCV 60SP in a Trainer 60 for some time. Its weight will be a great help in getting a good "hang angle" on an autogyro. If you haven't run yours, yet, you will find it pretty easy to start and run. Mine was one of the very early models and has bevel gears rather than helical. So because of the tiny backlash in the gears it is noisy when running. I believe the 90SP does have helical gearing. The engine produces tremendous torque, which is great for swinging large props. Because of it's torque and power, a fairly large gyro can be accomodated. About the only kit that I can think of the proper size is the Autogyro Co of Arizona, Kellett. Which is supposed to use a 90 size engine, but I'm pretty sure that the 60SP would pull it around just fine. Bill Hudson, WI

RE: 2009 Summer Gyro meet
Hi Gary (and Jim)... Glad to see you working on a site for 2009! Since I live on the western end of Wisconsin, I am prejudiced in favor of Gary's marvelous-looking field. One added attraction for Sheboygan is that the EAA museum in Oshkosh isn't too far away and is worth a visit. But Muncie is also a great venue. Bill

RE: Morris 2008
Hi Jim.... My old age is catching up with me. You are right!.....The Gyro Schtick has the Thunder Tiger .074 in it. The PT Gyro is electric as is the PT 25, both of which I left at Morris. The PT 25 also has an FMA Co-Pilot installed which really tames it down. Bill

RE: Morris 2008
Hi Charlie... I left a PT gyro with Jim, Bernie and Joel when I was in Morris this past Thursday. It already has a Thunder Tiger Installed, servos, even a channel 16 receiver. Don't know if it was picked up by someone or not. BillF

RE: Robbe Whopper
There was an article in "RC Report" sometime in the 1992-1995 era about the Whopper. It talked about using a string to get the rotor up to speed while taxiing etc. Perhaps the publisher of RC Report could supply a copy of the article. While I have no personal experience with the Whopper, I think mnowell's comment is about right! Bill

Dutch Roll
Here's hoping someone can help me with remembering how to correct "dutch roll". Years ago, when flying polyhedral aircraft such as the Zombie, there was a cure for the dutch roll. It involved making the vertical fin/rudder either larger in area or smaller and I can't remember which! I've converted a 44" wing span Zombie to electric with rudder and elevator for R/C, and I notice that it dutch rolls. Would moving the CG farther forward help without fooling with the vertical fin/rudder dimensions? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Bill F Hudson, WI

RE: Gyro Stick first Gyro build
Cash.. The Gyrostik is a fine first-time autogyro. I have built one and found it quite flyable, not needing rudder control. Unless you are dead set on scratch building, you might check out www.flyingbalsa.com. They produce some excellent gyro kits that are beautifully made---laser cut, etc. Their gyros do have rudder control and can be powered with either glow or electric. Good Luck! Bill

RE: Profile PT 25
Joseph... Adding to what Joel has replied.....the PT-25 doesn't need 'shims'. However, to clarify what is meant: In some cases if the rotor doesn't spin up with taxiing into the wind, putting 1/64" shims at the trailing edges of the rotor hub tangs will usually help. Start with 1/64 then if need be go to 1/32. However, the PT-25 comes with the SG6042 airfoil blades and as Joel says, these don't usually need any shims. The shims simply give each blade a bit of negative angle of attack, which helps getting the rotor to spin. However, too much negative angle of attack will cause the rotor to have less lift. This all has to do with getting the rotor into "autorotation". Hope this helps. Bill

RE: Now flying successfully with a teetering head
Very interesting result! Thanks for your report, Emilio. One question: Do you employ any delta-3 in the pivot? As I recall, John Kallend used delta-3 for his Whistler...The idea being that he could get smoother teetering. Bill

Hi Phil... Looks very nice indeed. What engine do you have installed? It doesn't sound 'electric'. By the way, the temp here today was 79...unusual for March in Wisconsin. Lots of guys flying, including my PT Gyro. BillF

RE: Tandem autogyro
Steve... Thinking about this question a bit further, Mickey Nowell might be able to make one fly with his swashplate rotor hubs. Based on Jim Baxter's experiences, hand launching didn't work well. In addition maybe with a pre-rotator set up as Mickey has done, the plane might be able to get off the ground in a controlled fashion. BillF

RE: Tandem autogyro
Steve.... A couple of years ago, Jim Baxter experimented with an RC tandem autogyro design. I Believe that it never flew successfully. I observed some of the flight attempts and the plane was not at all well behaved. However, installation of a PA-1 might be a way to go. BillF

Hi Joel... Great videos! Your piloting is something to be truly admired. Right now Sal and I are at the Best Western at Weeki Watchee. Had a great afternoon flying with bright sun, no clouds and some breeze. Tomorrow the rest of the gyronuts is supposed to arrive and the weather is supposed to hold. Would be great if you were here too to show those maneuvers! Regards, Bill

RE: Carter Aviation's jump takeoff
Hi Mickey... What you say makes sense. But then the question: What is the source of energy that carries the plane so high while appearing stationary? There likely was some breeze blowing so that the plane appears to "hover"??? Bill
