Tipo Flying Again
Last fall I wrestled Rusty Dose for his Tipo and fortunately won. I have not been able to get out and fly much lately but did manage to get everything set on the plane and tuned up this past weekend. Headed to the field, bolted it together it was running in no time. The airplane has a YS 60 short stroke, the best engine ever made in my opinion. Running on 30% heli fuel, it hauls the mail big time. Wide open throttle split S's- Awesome. A fellow modeler made the comment that he had never heard and engine run so smooth and have that much power at the same time. Probably why I still have about a dozen or so stashed away for upcoming projects. I've collected them for years. I could fly this airplane every day and not get bored. Really brings back some great memories of the real days of pattern. I wish more people would get inspired to build and fly these aircraft, but, progress in pattern or any discipline in our hobby is what brings on all the great advancements. For me, I sure like this though. Now on to building my Escape and trying to duplicate the one I had in 1985. Hope you have a great Sr. pattern project yourself. Bill C.

RE: BVM UB with CROW?
Well I do know what it does.... It increases the angle of attack at a given airspeed which in turn effectively raises the nose and gives the aircraft a better feel in the decent. It broadens the speed envelope for touchdown with no bounce. Great for shorter runways like I fly out of. It also gives the ailerons more feel into lower airspeeds. Yes I have tried it, use it and recommend it, you will be pleased with the results. Bill

RE: BVM UB with CROW?
The first two UB 's I saw fly at jet events broke there nose gears out due to the landing speed being just a little to fast, although they looked slow, resulting in the nose gear hitting the runway first then the uncontrolable bunny hop. I set my flaps at 40 degrees per the manual and found out why the two pilots I saw fly broke the nose gears. The airplane has to be so slow before the nose gear is above the mains its just uncomfortable. I set the flaps for 30 degrees then the ailerons to 1/2 inch crow and now the approach is nose high, throttle and speed control on final is much more managable and the airplane never touches the nose gear first even if its a little fast at touch down, plus it stay's stuck after the main touch. Over the numbers if you chop the throttle the airplane has a much better feel in the deceleration. Bill C.

RE: USA: Masters Pilots not moving to F3A??
I know this is a thread about moving up or not, but what about moving back? In one week I will be eligible for AARP. The last nats I attended I did make the FAI finals but justs as in the TOC if you dont take a prepared caller with you your at a awful disadvantage. I just dont have the time to fly and dont have the will power to plan for a full blown FAI finals attempt at the nats. So I will ask for myself and other other closet FAI fliers, does it look bad for guys like myself to return to our roots and move back to Masters? Kinda go full circle in life dont you? I might even have to wear a diaper again someday! Bill Cunningham

RE: What happened to Windy City Jets?
I went to Windy City Jets last year and had a great time, super club members that I met. There facility is just about the best I have ever seen without going to a real airport. I am planning on going to a pattern event in May they are hosting and its a real joy to fly from a site it so nice. Hard to believe anyone would turn down the chance to raise funds for a club no matter how flush they are. Bill

A4 Blue. Do you know if a paint store can cross the FS numbers without a sample chip? Maybe just should by the testors and have it locally matched. Thanks for your help. Bill

Rusty, I would like to come. Could you paint my name and AMA number on one of your planes for me? Matter of fact, I might want to have you repaint one of your planes in my scheme and colors. I just hate flying a plane that's missing these important details : ) Bill C

RE: Is a biplane best fit for P-11?
I have been flying a Naruke Azure biplane. Expecting the typical biplane issues I have been really impressed that the plane does not get knocked around in the wind, has a very balanced feel on rudder and rolls fantastic. I have also found that I can see it better than a monoplane because one wing is always completely visible, mainly when inverted at the end of the box. It also made weight with YS170 CDI :) Great power and of course knife edge and snaps deluxe. Bill

RE: Bay Area Ultra Bandit!!
I dont understand. If you dont have a air leak at a connection then how is the UAT filling up with air? I think you have an air leak, not a fuel draw issue. Mine has worked perfect with all the stock fitting and the JMP accumulator. Could it be sucking some air in from your fill line? Did you verify air bubbles traveling though in any of the lines?

RE: Bay Area Ultra Bandit!!
Just add the JMP accumulator and leave the all the original fittings in the tanks and it will work fine, mine has, with a P200. All 6mm line all the way up to the pump then the 4mm reducer. Bill

RE: Question for Skymaster 1:6 F-16 Owners
While your in there doing the Tor mod do yourself a favor and zona out the rear spar, if you can call it one and put in a real spar/hinge line. This will give your hinges something to bite to. Made a new one from 1' wide balsa, taper to fit and capped with .007CF. Use Robart hinges and not the kit supplied ones. The original hinge holes missed the blocks that were glue in. Even if you never have flutter the fin needs a new spar. I have the remains to prove it. Jetcap P-180 WFO knife edge, with a gyro driving the rudder all the time, no problems. See attachment Bill

RE: Ulta Bandit with crow?
Guess I could have been more clear. Certainly crow is not necessary but it does keep the ailerons effective into higher angles of attack. Also does help the plane stick the mains in a wider airspeed envelope without the bounce. Nice to have when you fly from a 300-400 foot runway. Bill

RE: Ulta Bandit with crow?
Here is what I have found with the UB. If you use full flaps for landing the airspeed has to be reduced so much just before touch down to be able to keep the nose gear from touching first. I found that a little uncomfortable. I like the plane to approach nose high so the touch down speed is not quite as critical. The first two UB landings I witnessed, (not my plane), at least one landing gear was torn out of each due to porpoising because the nose gear hit first. This is not a plane you want to get bouncing down the runway. Here is what I found works great: Ailerons- Crow to 5/8" up measured at the trailing edge, outboard tip. Flaps- Make a new template and set for 30 degrees. Both flaps and crow ailerons will cause the plane to pitch up, need down elevator mix with both. Have them on a separate switch so you can set a takeoff flap position as well. Bill C.
