RE: NEW Fliton Inspire 90 Pattern Plane
I used a Saito-125 and found the correct balance was easily obtained with rudder and elevator servos forward in the usual place over the wing. Flew it quite a lot last summer with APC 15x8 prop. The engine needs to be side-mounted (not inverted) to keep the tank position about level with the carb. After one hard landing, the landing gear will split, but can be repaired with thin CA (as has been mentioned by others). This is the only weakness of the model, but not serious. The top hatch is held in place by metal screws in metal T-nuts. The screws will vibrate out so some other way should be found to hold the hatch on; I used nylon screws that have some friction.

RE: switch to 6volt
I forgot to mention... If you switch to higher capacity batteries you will need a different charger. For say 2000mAH batteries, you should charge at 150-200 mA if you want a slow charge..

RE: switch to 6volt
Unless the servos specifically state to use 4.8volt only, using 6.0 volts is fine and I have done it for years. I suggest using 2000mAH MNiH batteries (A-size) either 4.8 or 6.0 Volt for longer flight times. The AA-size 2700mAH ones are not as rugged and have much higher internal impedance.

RE: JR 12x range issues
The US and Japanese 2.4 GHz JR systems are different. The US version is labelled DSM2 (also same system that is used by Spektrum radios in the US). The Japanese version is labelled DSMJ The DSM2 or DSMJ label appears on the 2.4 module and the JR receivers. It is my understanding that the DSM2 system uses a higher transmit power than the Japanese DSMJ version (presumably due to different licensing requirements in each country). I am not sure what other differences there might be, but they are not compatible, ie if one has a DSMJ system one should not purchase a DSM2 receiver. DSM2 is also the version imported into Australia.

RE: JR 12X MV initial evaluation
Just received my JR 12X (module version). It is going to take some time to learn to use this as the programming is quite different from my older JR 10S My initial reaction is that this is an excellent new system and the criticisms in the first post are not too relevant for me personally. The only downside I have recognized so far is the poor manual. The photos of the| screens are poor, with unreadable text. The explanations of the various functions are quite terse. The manuals for the 10s and 10x were far better.

RE: Fliton quality?
Here is the link to the Fliton store where you can buy a cowl. I had trouble finding this myself when I needed a new cowl. http://fliton.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=48&osCsid=8796f3ea29af45b8aafb129aee5b9376 The cost is quite reasonable. I also suggest that you buy a spaare landing gear as the gear will de-laminate if you have a hard landing.

RE: Fliton Inspire-90 GLOW SETUP
Flew my Inspire-90 last weekend. One quick trim flight then several contest flights. Since the Saito-125 was fairly new I had it quite rich and the power was not as much as I would have liked as the wind was quite strong; but leaning it out more next time should fix that. The model's aerobatic capability exceeds my skills. It flies very well. One of my landings was a bit hard and I noticed that the landing gear has started to de-laminate. Some thin CA glue should fix it. Metal gear would be better and it is probably a good idea to buy a spare landing gear.

RE: Fliton Inspire-90 GLOW SETUP
My Inspire-90 with Saito-125 is completed but first flight will probably not be until next weekend as there has been engine mounting issues and weather delays. I first mounted the engine inverted and did some engine run-in tests on the ground. I have now remounted the engine sideways. In this model the tank is far above the carb when the engine is inverted and I strongly recommend against an inverted engine setup. Fuel will run down into the carb. I used a Saito metal mount for the engine. A soft mount may be better but I am not sure how much better it will minimize airframe vibration. Although I have carefully balanced the prop the vibration is quite large at full throttle. This is typical for a model with light-weight plug-in wings. The canopy and wings are held in place with M4 metal screws into metal T-nuts. Metal in metal won't stay put under vibration and it was impossible to keep the canopy screws in place; they would just vibrate out. I have now replaced them with M4 size nylon screws that stay put. The two metal screws that hold the wings on did not vibrate out but it is probably still a good idea to also replace those with nylon screws. With a 5-cell A-size battery pack located between the receiver and tank the CG came out about right in the forward part of the recommended range. I have made some other minor changes and will let you know later how it flies.

RE: O.S. 30FS vs. the Chinese competition??
The OS-30 and Saito-30 4-strokes are both great engines and I have them both but not a Chinese copy that are also probably equivalent to the Japanese engines. . As I live in the US, I have a preference for buying US products first, if not available then I will buy Japanese, then European, etc; but Chinese products are a last resort unless the price-performance is substantially better. Just my personal preferences, not always logical but I can't help it.

RE: FS one by Horizon Hobbies
I just received the FSOne software. I am somewhat dissapointed. It is not in my opinion very realistic at simulating the feel of real model flying. I have not used any other simulator so have no basis for comparison with other products, so this may be the best there is ???. I have the TacCon controller and it works OK but I think I would prefer using my own transmitter. Have not been able to get my JR 10Sx to work with FSOne software; have used the JR 8-channel template from FSone but there is no stick response.

Future Replacement for 10X ?
It seems to me that sooner or later JR will have to release a new top of the line system to replace the existing 10X. Here is my input in case it might be heard. 1. Eliminate the awkward JR Datasafe, and substitute either a USB port integral with the transmitter, and/or use a flash memory card such as an SD card to store models. As well as making a better product, it should be less costly to manufacture. 2. Keep everything else much the same. I don't see any advantage to color screens, or talking boxes, except to make it more costly to buy and repair. Brenton Watkiins

RE: SAITO FA-56 VS FA-56F
The only difference between the standard Saito-56 and the Saito-56F is the carburettor. The Saito56F has a narrower carb bore of about 5.8 mm as compared to about 6.2 mm for the standard Saito-56. This means that the 56F version has better fuel draw, significantly lower fuel consumption, mayber faster throttle response (???), and less power than the standard version. I suspect that most sport fliers would be happy with either version. If one wanted more power the Saito-72 or 82a would seem to be better options as their weights are not much more than the Saito-56 Brent

RE: Good pattern plane for saito 91
If you want good aerobatic performance, I suggest that you use the Saito-91 in a model that in the 6-7 lb range. 8 lbs is way too heavy and I have a found a 6lb model is the best goal for this engine.

RE: Goldberg Extra 300
If you will be flying from thick grass, I suggest that you try moving the landing gear forward about an inch or so. I have no trouble on hard surfaces or very short grass, but it is very difficult to taxi on thick grass without nosing over. I replaced the stock landing gear with a carbon one. Have Saito-150 in it that is excellent.

RE: Where to buy Synthetic Oil to add to Fuel?
In my opinion it is not necessary to add any additional oil. The 16% oil content in Byron fuel is fine and has a small percentage of castor. I believe the 20% figure quoted in the Saito intructions is for safety reasons only for those who run their engines lean. I have run new engines with the same Byron fuel for many years.

Pattern model trimming
I am having difficulty trimming my patten model, and can not seem to find any help from the trim charts I found on various web sites. When I do a vertical dive with low power, for example on the downward leg of a stall-turn, the model yaws to the left way too much. An excessive amount of right rudder trim helps but this should not be necessary. I have tested in calm air and this is not a wind effect. The model construction seems straight and everything else is fine with the way the model flies. The upleg on stall turns is straight with no yaw, and there is no rolling on the down-leg or up-leg of stall turns. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Brent

RE: Onyx, Saito 180 prop
I suggest trying an APC 17x8N with the Saito-180 The rpm will be a bit less than the 16x8 but I think you will get more thrust moving vertically. I am using the APC 17x8N on both Saito 150's and Saito 180, in a pattern model and Goldberg Extra that each weigh about 10.5 lbs similar to your model. If you want to put the tank back near the center of gravity you can use a Perry pressure pump as shown on my web site. http://saito-engines.info/pumps.html There are other pump options but I like the Perry pressure pump best.

RE: Cermark JP-2407 power supply
I disconnected the batteries before measuring the voltage from the wall-charger. The voltage measured a little more than 22 volts. The wall charger supplied has a label that says 24V 500mA (There is a switch for 12 or 24 Volts and it was swithed to the 24V setting). I assume the 500mA label means a maximum recomended current of 500mA, yet the instructions say that the intial charge current for a discharged battery would be up to about 3 amps. It does in my judment appear to be a constant voltage charger. I have decided not to use this unit as I don't have confidence in the charge system. Howevr the nicads will be useful.

Cermark JP-2407 power supply
I bought a Cermark JP-2407 power supply as I wanted more than 12 volts for my Sullivan 24V starter. This Cermark product consists of a 20 cell nicad battery pack (Sanyo 7000mAH cells) plus a charger. The batteries and charger are all inside a wood box. I looked inside the unit and found a 24volt 500mA wall charger (that was on the label). I measued the DC voltage coming out of the charger and measured 22V. The instructions say that the initial charge current can be as high as 3 amps but will taper off as the cells charge. Problems I see with this product: 1. I thought nicad cells should be charged with a constant current yet this appears to be a constant voltage charger. 2. Under charge conditions a 20 cell nicad pack will have a voltage much higher than 22-24V supplied by the charger. So how do the nicad cells ever get a proper charge. 3. The wall charger (physically inside the unit) says 500mA on its label. Is 3A too much current for a 500mA wall charger. I have not used this yet. Are my concerns valid? Has anyone else used one of these? Cermark also sell a 12 volt version.

RE: carb tuning saito 56 for FAI fuel - need help
If you use low nitro fuel, or no nitro fuel, it would probably be helpful to try using a very hot plug. You may like to try the Rossi nr2 (very hot) plug. The English Maxflash plugs Number 7 (hot) or Number 8 (very hot) might also be suitable. I have known for some time that many Europeans have been successfully using fuel with 10% oil in 4-stroke engines with no apparent reduction of life expectancy for their engines. (But I have never tried it myself). A cheap (although probably not very good) replacement for nitro sometimes used in Euope is propyleneoxide but I really don't know what that is.

Servo lifetime
I have model with probably several 100 flights on it. It uses JR 4721 and 4131 servos that have been running on 6 volts. The servos still work fine, and I have no complaints. However after so many years I wonder if it would be wise to replace the servos. In particular I was wondering if servo motors will eventually fail. Is there a reasonable lifetime one can expect from a servo?

RE: 20% oil need for SAITO?
Just for the record:::: I believe Powermaster 20:20 fuel does not contain 20% oil. The total oil content is 18% (not 20%). I recollect that it was originally 20% but later dropped to 18%. I suspect Saito suggests 20% oil to cover themselves against idiot users who run their engines lean. I use Byron fiel (because it was readilty availble locally)that has 16% total oil content with a small amount of castor. Most brands of fuel seem to be using 15 to 18% total oil.

RE: HELP, Saito 100 inverted problems
The fact that the engine runs fine for awhile suggests there is nothing wrong with the engine, and your needle settings are approximately correct. The change after a few minutes suggests there is something wrong with the tank or plumbing. Do not use a one-way valve on the muffler pressure. The carb is not designed to operate at the high and variable pressure you will get from a one-way valve. I also suggest that the solution is not a pump or pressure regulator; these might help an engine that is already setup with muffler pressure, but won't necessarily solve a tank problem. One possibility is that the muffler pressure line is blocked or kinked and after a few minutes there is negative pressure in the tank. Here is what I would try: Fix model on the ground with engine upright. Take off the cowl so you can see if there are air bubbles in that develop in the line. Perhaps temporarirly disconnect the muffler pressure line and make sure it has no blockage. Get the engine to run relioably, for an entire tank on the ground like this. Then invert the engine and see it it still runs OK. If the tank position is level with the carb it should run OK inverted and upright.
