RE: 1/4 Tiger Moths
ORIGINAL: Cybertom I think the Flair kit is BRILIANT just the way it is.
If you'd read the rest of the post before knee jerking you'd see I basically agree with you. As far as the wood count. A Duncan Huston TM uses far less wood. The Tony Clark, from what I saw in the owner hanger also. Just like a scaled up Huston. Flairs are totally over engineered... I've had many a laugh with the boys in the UK playing with their CAD software some years back. "Hey, why make a tail plane out of 10 piece when you can design it out off 59 interlocking pieces?!!!" I've built the Moth, metal and all and added a 31 cc gass engine. As it would need the nose weight anyway why add lead?. I also started on the Yakk 55m. Then just stopped. As with the moth, WAY to many pieces, WAY to heavy for an acrobat. Even a "scale " one. I'm currently looking at ways to modify that model to make it usable (in a serious manner) for IMAC. Nope, heavy Flair bipes are just fine. As started, heavy is good in my book when it come down to biplanes.

RE: 1/4 Tiger Moths
Tony Clark. 3rd Scale. G38 and reduction drive with super quiet matching muffler system. 36 inch prop. Idle in the mid 100s of RPM. THE most scale looking and SOUNDING RC model available. I've still never seen or heard anything, even 400cc 4 stroke radial powered models that can be compared. Brilliant.[;)] Something smaller? Flair make a nice 1/4 scale TM. It's not F4C... but it's great for everything else. As normal with Flair, it's completely over constructed, way to many parts, far to much wood etc but for once this actually benefits a model. Moths fly so much better heavy, than light! There's just so much wing.

Try Bob Davis at Davis Diesel, he'll have one/make one. His mufflers are very nice, they actually muffle... as opposed to only diverting burnt oil like BCM's! I've been rather impressed by this guy... he's different.. and knowlegdeable. Both an understatement! http://www.davisdieseldevelopment.com/ Wouldn't a Slimline/Saito 1.80 pitts would fit?

RE: Vailley Tempest Build Thread
ORIGINAL: spitmad Another shot of the engine installation, due to the rear carby configuration of the 3W carby sits right in the middle of the firewall when the spinning backing plate is set at 3mm off the end of the cowl..............so I thought If I sit the engine back a little further, the carby linkages are clear of the firewall and I spun up a 25mm prop shaft extension........ The other option was to build another firewall 25mm further forward which would involve major rework of the whole engine box[>:] Setting the engine further back is not ideal as this moves the weight of the donk back an inch however it will provide for better cooling from the big chin duct.............if the beast needs a huge amount of lead to balance I may end up modifying the engine box and bringing the engine forward again Alan
Just build some engine stand-offs. 25mm is nothing, they're supplying stand-offs of 50mm... and over for many gassers. Glue a couple of 0.5inch ply wood discs together, say 20mmm diameter. make 4 of them, drill a hole through and use them in between the back plate and the fire wall. Bobs yer uncle. Strooth, sound good to me mate etc etc! Great Model.

I'd say a great deal of this is just rumors. Sure big engines, any engines for that matter will seriously hurt you, but the 215 Moki radials I've seen have been absolute PU$$Y CATS to operate. Absolutely no need for any extra equipment. I'd say you've more chance of injuring yourself on a .46 Mind you s#it happens.

If it wasn't for the market (US being the biggest) for ARF warbirds, 99% nothing more than sports planes dressed as war birds, the Chinese wouldn't be building 'em! Fact is and the evidence very clear right here in this very forum that most of you guys want them that way. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you and continually get in to problems with my comments towards those people here that spend a small fortune pimping a cheap ARF warbird with custom made scale mufflers, props, you name it. RE: electric v/s da 50 tf P51 video
Interesting vid'. I think it would be great if it wasn't for that lousy rotten 50cc single cylinder noise.[&o] Which is about as far away from a (any!) real full sized petrol powered aero engine as you can get. No offence to the builder/flyer good model/bad sound, unfortunately. At lease with electric, even though they're quiter, they present a FAR better prop sound more akin to a full size plane. So would the gass power version of course if you could hear the details over the god damned dreadful model engine sound. Last summer we'd had few a big BIG electric power choppers down the strip. Without doubt, frightingly realistic sound compare to big glow/gass screamers. And HEAPs more performance. FAI Scale helicopters are definately going in that direction. So will F4C it's just a matter of time/cost and availability of seriously geared engines able to drive the enormous props gasser can only dream of. Judging by the din down the strip, that day can't come fast enough.[8|]

RE: Cutting parts from plywood
Yeah, thats the one! You have to understand that building a decent model is all about suffering. Hand cut models fly better than factory cut models, period. People that'll tell you different are just plain lying. Hand sawn pieces are endowed with a greater universal power than machine cut parts. That's it bubba. Now you can be a flake and go for a plan/short kit from a custom lazer cutter. Or you can be a real scratcher and spend weeks and weeks hand cutting ever single part. Suffer like a man. No really... you'll gain an affiliation with the model, enter a zen like state and find real inter peace. Of course you'll be needing a prescription for Valium until the last piece is cut. But then..... tranquility.

RE: 1/8 scale functional Hamilton Standard hub for RCV SP engines.
Not wanting to sound like a party pooper but isn't it all a bit much for a .60 AFT sports semi scale model? By the time you've had another hub machined privately or made by Solo, it'll have cost you 10x the cost of the original model. Even then, nobody will really notice because its a small hobby plane. That'll perform even worse than just having a normal 2 blade prop unfortunately. Why not save all you money and energy and channel it into building a real decent large real scale model where the whole issue´isn't an issue if you get may drift.

RE: Servo Humm....Any ideas?
I like to address these type of problems using highly advanced technical equation. [sm=bananahead.gif]: F'iT! Let 'em hum. Once the engine is on... you don't hear it anyway. In the air, your servos are humming continually anyway. As soon as you input even the slightest command, the air pressure is forcing the surface in the opposite direct. Your servos have to fight against this.

I had one with a Moki 1.35/BCM pitts. Very nice. Before it a had the Extra in the same series. That had a 1.20 surpass II/pump. The M' powered Sukhoi was far better in the power dept'. Today I'd use an OS 1.60FX and an F3A muffler pipe set-up. Bags of power. No drama. Thats what I hate about BCM mufflers. They don't muffle. Just divert oil.

I've been using custom made-up 2500mah Ni-MH packs in my 10X for years now. They've worked just fine, super non critical maintenance and plenty of capasity I can't really see what Lipo would give you except something else to have to think/worry about, fiddle with and maintain. Regarding the diode in the 10X cell holder, I just by-passed it for the Ni-MH so I would get any nonsense when using a computer charger. Works great.

RE: Access to needle valve on scale models
Boy, what a bunch of manual Tweekers! On any plane that isn't weight critical I use a specialist servo driven remote mixer needle assembly. I've 'em for both OS and Moki engines and there are several available from after-market specialists, BMV for example. You basically set 'em up manually and then do the final tweeking (loads and loads of available adjustment) via a dial on the tranny! Where have you guys been? The jet boys have used these for years, they work GREAT! I had one in a CG Extra (shows how long ago the was) and I never touched the needle in several years. Im surprized that you scalies just haven't got light of this. How many competition flights where you intending scratching because your engine went lean/rich 2 mins after take off? Turn the knob on your tranny, fix the problem and save the round.

RE: Right Thrust-Down Thrust Question
You'll be definately be needin' some. If there isn't anything built in, eyeball 1deg' down and 3deg' right thrust for starters. Fix the rest when flying. You shounldn't just fix your engine to the center of the FW then add the R thrust as this'll make the prop' not centered. Offset mount to left so the center of the prop lines up with the center line through the aircraft.
