ORIGINAL: Old Fart Back in the day(69)my favourite scary bike was an H1A triple with drum brakes though i had the 750 as well.I'm not arguing with anyone else that was brave enough to ride them:)
My dad bought 3 wrecked Mach IIIs and pieced together a mint bike. The only word for it is 'insane'. I'm with you 100% on being brave enough to survive them. Then, he got a deal on the race version whatever that was called. The one with expansion pipes and wheelie bar. My wife was put on notice that I want a Z1 some day to rebuild. She doesn't have a clue how serious I am. The 750 was very nice. I still have a poster of the 650 that claimed it would beat any 750 in the world, right out of the crate. I guess that excluded it's 750 brother.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: FNQFLYER Not really, Old Fart, the guy running in NASCAR is actualy winning with a Toyota Camry. Forgot his name, legend in his own mind, won one drivers champs here and went to the US. We also have a young guy running in opened wheelers and winning as well. Indy cars as well. Name me one guy (Yank) who has conquered the Mount or in fact won on any circuit in OZ. As for Drag racing, yes we bought their funny cars, but we now send the technology back to the US, so I'll sort of concede that one. Re the Mount and elsewhere many other than Aussies have tried and failed (Europeans excepted) but we put up heaps of successful drivers internationally in WRC, open wheels, Sports cars and Saloons. Now that Russian copy of the BMW motor bike was called a Ulan here in OZ (maybe after the billie gang). It was a copy of the german army despatch riders bike with an outfit attached (similar to what the germans did also) On the Royal Enfield copy, according to my mate once you get over the porous metal in the grearbox / crank case) and you sort out the outfit you can enjoy such upgrades as disc brakes and the chicken starter. Finally these machines are at the low end of the EU spec range.
Marcos Ambrose. I was tuned in to racing later last night and there he was doing some charity for a little kid. Makes you like the guy no matter who he is. You can't get into the nationality thing with racing or you will end up looking silly no matter where you are from, or what you are bragging about. I'm 60, so I remember when Europe ruled Formula racing for years. You can break that down to an Italian vs British fight. Then Ford came along with GTs and Cobras. Ditto for motorcycles all over the world. When I was old enough to get my first bike you got no respect unless you had a Kawasaki as they were blistering fast at the time. Those were the two stroke days. Racing is racing. That's all it is. Who cares if it is straight line, left turns, or if no Aussie has ever won Top Fuel or The Rock. Well....let me back up and admit that I don't consider the Rally format as real racing.....[:D] Whew, good thing we didn't mention women racers!
ORIGINAL: FNQFLYER Last needle, we have Aussies competing successfully in the US but none of the Yanks who have come here have yet to conquer the Mountain. End of lecture.
Well, not quite the end. I remember when Australian drag racing relied on Americans in American funny cars. I only know of one Aussie NASCAR driver but he's not really a contender for any top 10 finishes. Nice guy though. He was running about middle of the pack recently before being taken out.

Dave- I may have that review somewhere but did he say the general clearance was .001, the skirt, or crown? I can remember a couple of engines that had to use 50 wt. [:D]

The point of the dot is to be sure it is aligned with the cam follower and push rods. You can see that clearly in Jaka's pic where the dot is not off to either side too much. I stole this photo from W8YE to show alignment:

RJ, I get on RCU riding bareback, so I only know about AVG indirectly. It seems that is your problem, not RCU. A number of members have commented about AVG from what I've read elsewhere. Ed, there are some other massive areas that act the same way. Have you tried the last post button? That works like a champ for me.

Lopflyer, I use my iPad the most for checking RCU, but sometimes an iPhone and my desktop computer like right now. My desktop runs both Mac OS and Windows XP. The Club SAITO thread is just big, huge, and slow to load on everything I use. The fastest and best way to load the thread is to click the arrow button on the far right of your screen from the glow engine menu. This is the last message button and that's what you will get. Just scroll up to the last one you read. It may be clunky, but it works faster every time.

RE: How to rejuvenate a long stored OS 1.08 ?
For starters, the metal was soaked in water. It was only a 72 hour test. If a model airplane engine crankshaft and bearings get that treatment they deserve the rust, imo. But, 72 hours isn't very long in crankshaft years.

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
The ratio of OS and Sanye engines sold in the U.S. vs Europe is probably close to the Saito figures. A lot of engines are sold here with shims and that solves compression ratio problems. The problem with nitro prices in Europe is taxation. We have our taxation problems too, just on other things the politicians think are desirable.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
ORIGINAL: orthobird great, thanks,, that is what i thought, maybe too lean on LSN. Â i also noted when plane flew, there was very little smoke trail, usually, with nitro, if it is rich, it will leave a faint smoke trail. Â great, i will fix it and update you. Â
You got that part right! Most people crank the the HS needle around until they see a thick trail of smoke and then they are ready to fly. I never go by smoke on a Saito for tuning. Hobbsy is suggesting that you peak your HS to absolute peak and leave it there. Don't lean it any. Tune the ls. After every couple of adjustments on the ls, go peak the hs again. Repeat as necessary. When the ls is set, then peak the hs again and lean it a few hundred rpms. Remember, it may take a couple of trips around the field with you listening closely to the engine to get it exactly right. If your tuning is right on the button on the ground, it may lean out a fraction while in the air. Just land, tweek, and listen again. Like the man on TV says, "Set it, and forget it."

RE: FA450R3 - Raiders of the lost RPM's
ORIGINAL: Reverend I usually run straight fuel (0%) but for the last tests on the film I tried 5% and 18% Oil (Molsynth 150k). I am not a friend of nitro-fests. Apart from it being very expensive here in europe, it pulls water into the engine and promotes corrosion.
Bumping up to 15% usually gives the single cylinder Saitos another 600 rpm. Nitro does not pull water into the fuel, that's the methanol. Some people fear nitro because they don't understand glow fuel components. I bet that engine would run much better on 10%. Anyway, if you are shy about using nitro because of corrosion, use a little castor for protection. Those special synthetics probably offer no protection against rust. Use something for an after run oil.
ORIGINAL: Carosel43 I use 5% nitro in everything. there is no need for more unless you are flying a helicopter or running a nitro car. In aircraft, especially 4 strokes you are better off with low nitro.
How is less nitro better for 4 strokes?

RE: How to rejuvenate a long stored OS 1.08 ?
Filling up the engine with glow fuel works good after a soak for a day or so. I did that on a HB 61 stored many years. WD40 is only a water dispersant. It doesn't preserve and will gum up after a while.

I rarely use the hardware that comes with kits anyway. It just piles up as extra stuff in my shop. I built a few pattern planes that came with no hardware and that's the way I like it.

Well, yes, you did forget the other engines. I challenged your comment about others being better. The 61 was the engine that caused problems when many left the plant with carb o rings missing. The Evo line is not the same as ASPs or Magnums. Different engines altogether.

You can use any magnets. You use them to hold down wood, hold pieces upright, etc. i wouldn't think of building without them now.
ORIGINAL: Sport_Pilot Suggest that you not use Chinese engines. There are a number of American and European engines. A lot of them are better than the ST or EVO  No need to support a communist country.
The Evolution 46 line engines are all excellent. I would certainly put any version of the Evo 46 up against any version of OS 46, which has the gold standard image to some people. I'll be interested in hearing of the comparable quality and power in those engines you are telling us about. While I understand your sentiments about China, just how far do you have to go to attempt to not buy anything made there???

We have a local place that has excellent equipment. They charged $9 to digitize a large sheet of plans to cd containing pdf and tiff files. This place looked like they would be the most expensive, but they are dirt cheap for plain copies of plans, etc. Check the mom and pop places if you have any in the area.

RE: What happens if arf and kit building prices meet?
Income is indeed fixed when you and/or your wife retires. You find that you start budgeting from a different frame of view. Part time jobs are available, yes. Health issues and age discrimination cuts down on them being a reality for some people when you consider the age most are able to retire. In any case, you have a point about working people too. A part time job in a hobby shop would be a good thing. My wife and I are retired except for my part time job of instructing a class on building and flying r/c planes to college students.
