Northstar Motor
Hi all...i have been modelling for over 50-years and just getting into electrics and i very much love the simplicity and tech aspects. Have had several foamies, etc and now building a Balsa USA Northstar and converting to elec. Going to use a 40 or 50 sized Hacker and Castle Creations 100 amp esc. I plan to standardize on Hacker and CC. My problem is the Northstar has limited prop clearence without making the engine pylon longer which i can do. I have less than 6" clearence as it is so I can only use an 11" prop in it's current design. Can i use a smaller prop with the larger 40/50 size Hacker...they seem to want a 14" prop. How about a three blade. Any observations will be appreciated...thx...Bo

...i've built several 40 size including the cox ARF (awful!)...the kits are wonderful...they supply lots of balsa blocks and you carve an airframe out of them.....they fly like a twin pattern ship...i can only dream of how good a 60 size 80+ " would be....bo

...foam is heavy...messy....and u still have to repair bottom of wing when done...it does work i understand....u can also use carbon strip which might be easier to obtain at lhs...

...i stripped the covering off the bottpm between the nacelles and glassed the bottpm with carbon fiber mat and blew a coat of white...strong and easy....

....she flies off grass just fine...just get plenty of speed...flies on the wing, not the props...paved is better....

...after my post mortem on the wing, this thing was a disaster waiting to happen...it just does not have adequate structure for the wing loading...while I did not grease it in on this landing...it should not have destroyed the wing....bad,bad,bad TF.......bo

P-Y...that looks pretty scary....doesn't the foam add a lot of weight and why doesn't it distort the wing...this stuff is pretty aggressive when it expands....thnx...Bo

Hi all.....yesterday I made a less than perfect landing with my 310 and the wings folded like a deck of cards. Both broke at the fuse/wing junction. Going to order a new wing from Tower (unless someone has a better suggestion....$199/free shipping). I have seen threads on this discussiuon re: strengthening the wing...anybody know where those threads are located or have any tested suggestions...thanks....Bo
