RE: NEW BUSA 1/3rd Scale Fokker Triplane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes. Years ago I built a DR1 from Effinger plans. They were, to put it kindly, challenging. The shop drawing dimensions often did not match the plan dimensions and caused me a lot of wasted time and materials since I made a "kit" before I began building. There were many areas that needed re-engineering as well. If you acquire a plan, examine it carefully before you begin using it.

RE: Are Scale RC Models Toys?
I agree with Abu. I consider my rc planes to be in the same category as golf clubs, fishing gear, photo equipment, scuba etc. Most wouldn't consider these to be toys, but they sure are fun for a lot of people.

RE: Thrust or no thrust on your large WWI models?
Yes. I generally follow what is recommended on the plans and adjust if needed. I added a degree or two (don't remember) of down thrust to the BUSA DR1 in my avatar to what was called for on the plan. You are either going to wind up adding offset to your engine or trim to your control surfaces, so why not keep the surfaces as straight as possible? You will still have to "fly" the plane due to different engine speeds.

Can I go to the head of the line? I'm a BUSA customer (1/3 scale Pup, 1/4 scale DR1, 1/4 scale Nieuport 11) and I'm now retired with plenty of time to build!

RE: Quick Vinyl Lettering Questions
Another option to consider is to take the whole sheet from the sign shop containing the lettering; before "weeding" it. Then remove the lettering from the sheet and use the sheet as a stencil to paint the lettering on the plane. I've done this and it works well. In fact, I did it on the DR1 in my avatar. Stick the sheet to the plane and using a small brush, paint clear dope or poly-u at the edges of the stencil to prevent paint seeping underneath. Then paint.

RE: g26 remote choke
ORIGINAL: AA5BY Sorry to hear about the mishap and wishing you the best of luck with the Taylorcraft rebuild. I've been down that road twice. I purchased a Hanger 9 Taylorcraft used that had suffered some minor damage by original owner who did a good job with repairs. I crashed it when it tip stalled after turning onto final from base leg with a fairly strong cross wind (tail wind on base leg). The crash completely tore up the front end. It was rebuilt by re-sizing the front end to the newer Hanger 9 cowl and wind screen. It flew for about five minutes on the maiden after the rebuild and the Zenoah G-23 quit (cause was found to be a crimped vent line) and I foolishly tried to make a non powered turn back into the wind to land and it tip stalled and tore up the front again. The second rebuild was much easier as most of the parts were fit back together. It has flown several times since and flies ok. I did make some changes in the setup and programed some differential in the ailerons as well as mixed some up trim in the ailerons at low throttle to simulate some wash out to reduce tip stall tendency. I agree with the suggestion to solder the hole in the choke plate closed. It makes getting a cowled gas engine started much easier. I've used both hand operated choke levers and servo operated. Both work fine. Again... best of luck with the rebuild... if possible, document the rebuild as it takes place with pics. It is fun to follow a rebuild as it takes shape and see how various builders go about it.
Thanks. This plane was built from Hostetler plans and the front of the fuse was extensively modified to accept a full cockpit and hide all the wiring etc. It was a lot of work. The fuse was totally destroyed and a new one will have to be built although most of the scale "goodies" are still useable. I'm hoping I can transplant the empennage to the new fuse. There was some damage to one wing which is repairable. I intend to start on it after Christmas when I will be retired! Entering at least one scale contest is on my bucket list.

RE: g26 remote choke
ORIGINAL: captinjohn Yes, it happened. Unfortunately the plane did not survive its first flight and I did not take photos of the firewall. It will be rebuilt this winter. What happened???
Not sure. It cartwheeled on takeoff. Seemed to have plenty of speed/power. All controls were correct. I've been at this hobby for 50 years so have a lot of experience. First time I've lost a plane on its first flight. It was a heartbreaker as I put a lot of effort into this and it was the best, most detailed plane I've ever built. I pretty much gave up the hobby for a year after that. My model on the left, 2 of full scale on the right.

RE: Do you use cockpit kits or make your own cockpit interiors?
Here is a panel I made for a Taylorcraft. The instruments were purchased, but the rest was constructed. I do not consider myself a precision builder and as of yet have not competed in scale. With determination and patience it is definitely satisfying to DIY. The first two photos are of the panel I made and the other three are of the full scale panel.

RE: Phoenix 2000 EPO Composite R/C glider by Hobby King
I just received on of these today which I ordered, unfortunately, before reading this forum. It took about three weeks to receive and arrived in good condition and was was mostly easy to assemble. I also found the linkage hardware inadequate and replaced all of it. The only assembly issue is with the wing attachment; it requires that four bolts be lined up with blind nuts which I found difficult to do. It required enlarging one of the holes that did not line up with its blind nut. Instructions are very minimal and a newby would have problems with assembly. I got the plane without radio. There are no instructions provided for programming the ESC. I will search on line for them. I suppose it will have to be replaced if I cannot locate them. It will be a few days before it is flown and I will try to remember to report my experience.

RE: .30 or smaller 4 stroke engine?
Sorry - I forgot about the cg for the Bombshell. The plan shows it 4" behind the leading edge and that's where I have it on mine. If I build another of these, or any other free flight converted to rc, I will reduce the dihedral quite a bit. Most of these were meant to be hand launched and they are quite squirrely to take off in grass. I believe this is due to the unequal drag on the wheels caused by irregularities in the grass causing yaw and therefor unequal angle of attack/lift on the wings. Less dihedral would reduce this problem. Since we can control the plane in flight, less dihedral is necessary. Anyway, I'm going to try it in my next one or may just build another wing for the Bombshell I have.

No, sorry. My Typhoon 2000 pattern plane is set up for this engine. I think I may be the only one in the world running this engine successfully! Once I sorted out its problems, its been very reliable for seven years. That's how the piston and sleeve wore out!

That .52 may be a little much. Mine flies great with the .30, plus You will be flying it mostly at or near idle. However, I did have to add weight to the nose, so the weight may as well be engine. Not at home right now. Will post cg later. Should be on plan, don't you have it?
