RE: New Updates! 1:1 scale Sopwith Pup and Fokker Triplane builds
Absolutely! This is very interesting. Inside, I think most every modeler would like to do build a full scale plane.

RE: .30 or smaller 4 stroke engine?
I have an old timer (Buzzard Bombshell) with a Magnum .30 four stroke. It's great fun just to cruise around at low altitude, do very slow fly-by's and touch and goes on a dead calm day. I was telling a couple of club members that I'd like to make another old timer with an electric motor. They said "don't do it, we like to watch your plane and hear the putt-putt of that little four stroke." So even though it's a messy clean-up after each flying session, I'm going to stick with a four stroke for my next one.

RE: firewall mounted servos
Thanks again everyone. This is proving to be quite educational. I am using full size servos on the firewall. I have several other planes with gas engines and am aware of the idiosyncrasies of the carbs/throttle. It can be tricky to get the throttle to utilize and follow the entire movement of the throttle control stick on the tx. I've also considered switching to digitals, but am not sure if it is worth it to do so.

RE: firewall mounted servos
I contacted Horizon about this and attached is their response. Does anyone know anything about these RF filters? How are they installed? Thank you for your recent email. You should not have any issues with RF, but to ensure there is no problem, you can use RF Filters to prevent any noise affecting the servos. firewall mounted servos
I'm building a scale model with a full cockpit. To avoid having to run linkage through the cockpit I mounted two servos (throttle and choke) on the firewall. I will be running a magneto equipped G26 and a Spectrum radio. Is there going to be problems with RFI with this setup? Other than using non-metal pushrods, are there other precautions I should be taking?
ORIGINAL: DAN REISS Shielding leads will not help because there is no perfect shield. They all leak and it does not take much, a value in the millionths, to interfere with your radio. If you feel that there is no alternative, then give it a try and do a thorough ground test. Reduce the radiated power from your transmitter antenna, walk around the model for 360 degrees and run the engine at different revolutions. Keep the posts coming. We would all like to hear about another success story. Dan.
It may be at least a few weeks before I am far enough along to test this set-up. It is hardly a "slap dash" installation. This is a Hostetler plans built Taylorcraft and I have put a lot of work into it and, of course, want to minimize risk, but keep it as scale appearing as I can. I could not come up with a feasible way to install the servos behind the firewall without complicated linkage. The choke is a particular problem as there is no access to it with the cowl mounted and I did not want to put a hole in the cowl with a rod to operate it. Thanks to everyone for your responses. They turned out to be pretty much what I expected; conflicting opinions. Apparently, these types of installations sometimes work and sometimes do not. I will do a very thorough range check and take my chances if it shows no problems. I have tried to contact a Horizon tech about this, but have not yet received a response. I will post the results of the range check after I do it. If the weather holds out here in the Northeast and the range check goes well, I may have a flight report too.

RE: firewall mounted servos
"It's the wrong way to do it and could cost you dearly one of these days when you could have avoided the problem in the first place very easily. Dan." Well, not so easy in this case. The linkage would have to be hidden in the cockpit somehow and at least two bell cranks would be needed on the firewall for each control. Is there a way to shield the servo leads?

I purposely bought the magneto version for the weight. This plane (Taylorcraft) would need weight with a CDI anyway.

RE: .30 or smaller 4 stroke engine?
Magnum engines are a good alternative to the OS. I have a couple of them and they run well. I read somewhere (it may have been a rumor) that a disgruntled former OS designer either started or works for the company that makes the Magnums. They are very similar in appearance to the OS's and as I said, the ones I have run fine. I have a .52 and a .30. I run the .30 in an old timer (Buzzard Bombshell) that I fly amost constantly at idle. When I throttle up, sometimes after 10-15-20 minutes, the engine perks right up. It is very reliable. I have a couple of OS four strokes and two strokes too and they are also excellent, reliable engines. http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/210842.asp

RE: CCRC Biplane Bash photos
Almost certainly there are two digital servos (at least), one for each set of wings. Digitals need power to maintain neutral and the weight of the ailerons makes them sag like this when power is off.

Glad you like the photos. I took 845 over the two days we were able to fly. With that many, there's bound to be a few good ones! It was my first time entering the Jamboree too. A really good time.

They hopped the Caudron. It never got above five or six feet high. It's just too valuable to risk actually flying it.

RE: Best scale photo!
I took over 400 photos today at the IMAA District 1 Fly-in in Bloomfield, CT. (I posted a link to the ones I uploaded in an earlier post.) I think I got two that might make the grade for this thread. One is another shot of Mitch Epstein's beautiful Waco. Mitch posted a few earlier that I took at Hadley, MA, but this one is a better shot, I think, because I had the sun behind me. The other is a very pretty Jenny. Sorry, I did not get the owner's name. I'm hoping to go to Rhinebeck next weekend and enter. That will get me on the flight line and I hope to get some nice shots there. I can't find any "tells" on the Waco. Anyone see any? There are a few on the Jenny: the pilot looks a little stiff and maybe a little too small. Also the the plane is too clean and the non-scale fuselage structure shows through the covering. Should I delete that photo? This is very challenging!
