RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
I have subscribed to several different threads on RCU. When I acces those threads through the email link it is encredibly slow. If I access the threads by by opening up a desktop icon for RCU then going to the thread It moves right along. I wish they would get it fixed. Galen

RE: Spektrum DX18
ORIGINAL: madmodelman What the 18 actually does is assign the most important controls, flying surfaces, in the first available channels. Like you I used to use Aux2 for ucu control. This is a complete waste of time and a channel, I advise you to forget it. If you are worried about killing the turbine fast simply assign a throttle cut switch, I use switch H. Gary.
Gary - Thanks for the information on how the flying surfaces are assigned. It just seems strange that if you change them you lose a channel. My first radio was a Heathkit GD 47. I have traversed through a number of radios over the years, my last one is the JR 11X. This DX-18 is a whole new breed of cat. It's a fantastic radio. I also appreciate your concern about me waisting time. I have been retired for 14 years now and I just waist time whenever I want to. Also at this age forgetting things is not a problem. Thanks again, Galen

RE: Spektrum DX18
Tom Thanks for the info on hooking up the nose wheel to the rudder. Very slick. I've been using my DX-18 for several months now just in simple 4 & 5 channel airplanes. I decided to put it in my R-54. I found something that puzzles me and hope I can explain it well enough to be understood. I selected the two flap option in aircraft type. It automatically assigned the flaps in the channel assign menu to aux 1 and aux 2. RT and left flap respectively. Since I wanted to assign the ECU aux throttle lead to aux 2 on the receiver (it's a Jetcat P-70) I moved the left flap from aux 2 to aux 3. I then went to assign aux 2 back to the aux 2 channel and it was gone. I could not assign aux 2 back to aux 2 in the port assignment menu. The work around of course is to assign another aux channel to aux2 then activate it by assigning it to switch E. It seems that if you don't use the auto assign channels as is you actually lose a channel. Does this make sense? Thanks Galen

RE: New Giant GP Super Sportster!!!!!
ORIGINAL: Muttdog Hey guys I have a strange one for you. Now that my Family has left and my home remodeling is nearing completion I wanted to get my GSS back in the air. Unfortunately my dirt bike bit me this weekend and I split my knee cap open clear to the bone. 14 stitches and a few vicodins prevented me from not only flying my other plane but also working on the GSS as well. Here is the problem. When I had the plane upside down in my cradle I must have pushed too hard on something and the plane was not centered correctly in the stand so I cracked one of the stringers that goes from the rear of the cockpit to the tail. The break is right behind the cockpit rear wall and it is the very top stringer. Now I can stick my hand in there and feel it but I have no way to get any CA in there. Any ides on how to fashion an extension to a CA bodel or any other way to deliver the glue? I cannot use Epoxy as the it is not 100% broken, just cracked so I figure some thin penetrating CA should so the trick if only I can get it to the spot.
Make sure the stringer is in place properly then poke a small hole in the top side of the covering where the crack is and drip some CA thru the hole. The stringer will harden up and you'll hardly ever notice the hole.

Sam - I also express sadness over the loss of your Corsair. I was hoping to see it at the Goldendale warbird event. I believe I purchased a tail wheel setup from you earlier. I feel like a vulture in saying this but if you had one of your custom made ones in this Corsair I'd be interested in purchasing it. Again - Sorry for your loss. Galen

RE: Top-Flite 1/5th F4U Corsair ARF Group Build and modification thread
Hey Dean!! Long time no see!! I'm also doing the Corsair ARF and I'm still contemplating the engine and whether to have gear doors or not. I have the electric retracts and a 5 inch wheel. The wheel fits but doesn't leave much room for actuators. I really would like to stay with a simple mechanical door but can't seem to make anything work. I've found several good suggestions on other threads but because of the wheel size I run into problems. I am going to stay with the 5 wheels so I may end up not using the doors. Are you going to install wheel well doors? If so what are you going to do to open and close them? You do excellent work - please keep us well posted on how you put together this Corsair. Galen

It's electric and I placed a wheel collar on the jack screw where I wanted the retract to stop. I tried to take a picture of it but I can't without taking the retract out. It's only 4 screws so I can if needed.

Thats what I did but I also restricted the tailwheel from retracting all the way. A portion of the wheel extends below the fuse when retracted giving some what of a scale appearance.

RE: Top-Flite 1/5th F4U Corsair ARF Group Build and modification thread
Here's what I did with the tail wheel. I converted it to electric and extended the the wheel so it goes down further. It raises the tail about an inch from what TF has it. I also adjusted it so when retracted the wheel shows just below the gear doors. I received the electric mains from Tower. They are really nice - except one doesn't work. But I'm sure they'll make it right. Galen

RE: Top Flite Giant Corsair ARF Disappeared.
Someone asked about wheel size. I have 5 inch mains and they work fine. The wheel doors are a tight fit when closed but they do close completely. The retracts should work fine with no modification. If for some reason the end air nipple on the retract cylinder is pointing toward the wing, just remove the cylinder mounting pin from the retract and rotate the cylinder 180 deg, remount the pin and you’re good to go.

RE: Top Flite Giant Corsair ARF Disappeared.
Mine came double boxed, no pallet. When it arrived my wife put it on a picnic table in the breezeway. While nobody was looking our 80 lb German Sheppard pup (11 mo. old) decided to see what was in the box. Somehow he pulled it off the table and it dropped 3 feet to the ground. He then proceeded to tear it apart bite by bite. Fortunately my wife stopped him before he got to the inside. I was sure there would be some damage but it was well packed and everything was fine. Once in a while I do get lucky!

RE: Top Flite Giant Corsair ARF Disappeared.
I also received mine yesterday. So naturally I glued it together with spit to see what it looks like. I too am impressed. One of the things I noticed in the Top-Flite Photos is the low slung tail wheel. It looks totally unnatural so I extended the pivot rod and converted it to electric using a lado retract unit from a spare retract I had. The wheel is the one supplied by Top-Flite and I will replace it with a larger one thus helping it even more. I talked to Robart and they have an electric conversion coming out for the mains. I plan on doing the conversion. They said it would be ready in 30 days-?. The cowl color is off but I have a fiberglass Specialties one for the Top-Flite kit and I will see if it will work. I'm sure the balsa scale builders will stick their noses up, point and laugh but hey this will be an all around excellent looking and flying corsair. A first class giant scale aircraft!!!!

RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
I use the Mcdaniel glow driver. I have only run the engine for break in but found the glow driver to be handy to start, then I turn it off. Seems to idle just fine with out it. Others have a lot more experience than I with the engine, however. Maxam - In re-reading the manual it says not to use standoffs for mounting the engine. I have 1.3 inch standoffs and wonder what your experience is. In fact any others opinions would be apprecieated.

I haven't run it since I adjusted the valves but they needed quite a lot of adjusting so I'll probably see an increase in RPM. By the way , I appreciate you pointing me to this Waco. RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
Tom - There's a good 1/2 " between the cowl and the rockers. The plywood mount ring inside the cowl would not let the cowl slip over the engine. I cut about 8" off the bottom of the ring and it slipped right over. I can rig a way to attach the portion that I cut off to the cowl once it has been slipped over the engine or I might just leave it as it is. It attaches quite solid. The cut out for the exhaust was the only other thing I did. I did weight her and it came to 19.4 ibs. I have two large batteries, the glow plug unit and fuel tank to go. Should be around 22 lbs ready to go. Galen

RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
Here's what I have settled on. Ordered from Hobby - Lobby and they shipped it the next day. An excellent ARF. If anyone gets one let me know as I have some items worth talking about. The UMS 7-77 fit great. Only a small modification to the cowl and it goes right on. I still have some mounting changes for the engine plus fuel setup, radio's etc. and she's ready to go. The engine is pretty well broke in and the valves adjusted. I just have a question that I'm sure someone can answer - when I removed the glow plugs I noticed that some had the washer seal on them and some not - which is correct and does it matter? - Thanks Plus I noticed in the first picture the engine looks as if it is pointing down some. It is!! I only had the two bottom standoffs installed and it was sagging. That will change. Galen
ORIGINAL: radial1951 * booker-RCU, There are a few reasons why one cylinder may run cooler than the others. As Tom says, it may be a plug fouled slightly with oil. OR it may be a DUD plug that just doesn't ignite the fuel mix as early as it should (ignition point slightly retarded?), therefore not burning all the fuel available. RE: UMS Evolution Radial Care and Operation
I got my EVO 777 running yesterday. What a sweetheart of an engine. No problems getting it started. It needed just a little prime and took right off. I have the McDaniel glow driver plus the Kelo exhaust. It's really quiet. For fuel I'm using the mix reccomended by Invertmast (Thomas) of 5gal methanal to 1 quart of Klotz techno-plate oil. I have the throttle set up on the engine manually so I can turn the glow driver on and off with the throttle on the transmitter. Once the engine is warmed up I can turn off the glow driver and it runs fine through all speeds. I'm using a 22X12 Xoar prop. I've purchased an infared heat detector to check the cylnder head temp. You just point and press the button and it instantly reads it. I have noticed that all cyl are very close except the # 6 cyl. It's about 100Deg F lower than the rest. I've checked the glow plug and it is hot and it seems to be running ok. Is this something I should be concerned about?
