RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot Not a good day. I may be absent for a few days; I don't know how long, and I'll have to play it by ear. Fourteen years ago, someone brought my wife a tiny puppy, who grew into a big, beautiful black Labrador retriever. Later today, we have to take our beloved boy to the vet hospital for the last time.[:(] My wife is going to be devastated, and this will probably be a very bad weekend for her, as she loved spending time with him on her days off. Not to say that I'll be in any better shape. He spends every day right at my feet, sleeping while I write by books, and I affectionately run my foot along him many times a day. It's going to be very strange indeed. If I can drop in and post, I will. Have a good weekend, guys. ~ Jim ~[&o]
Jim my condolences. It tough loosing such a faithful friend. Best of luck Brad

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Jim why do you wanna run two Rx? I'd use the pull pull rudder. It's a clean light and looks good. If I could do anything different on mine I would have put the elevator servos inside the fuse. As for the firewall. Don't overthink it. If you wanna brush in some epoxy on the joints its probly not a bad idea for piece of mind. That firewall is pretty beefy the plane already. I'd wouldn't get to worried about it. I never did a thing to mine and it's been flying for three seasons issue free

My fuel DOT and switches are on a mounting plate behind the door. No issues whatsoever. Nice place for them. Hidden and yes when I fuel up my plane in knealing on the ground but sometime i work from off one of the tables at the field. But it's whoevers prefrence.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: WI53072 Guys, I am now working on mounting my fuel system and setting up to put my throttle servo in. Being new to gas, I see many folks are removing the idle adjustment screw on their carbs. Is this a good idea or is this just standard operating procedure? Also, what sort of pushroads/connectors are you using for the throttle linkage set-ups? AND what fuel dots and what on/off/charge switches should I use for the 4.8V ignition battery? Jim I am glad you are geeting all set-up for the arrival of your SD. I am still waiting for my cowl replacement from Dan, and am expecting he must of shipped it last week so more than likely I will see it this week sometime. This thread is huge!!! This plane has had a lot of comments and build tips throughout. I really like Cmoulders radio set up which leaves room for smoke someday if I should decide to go that route as it seems like a lot of messing around. What I am finding is you really have to think hard about where to put what in this plane. So far I have decided to keep the rudder pull - pull servo mounted in the cabin and both elevator servo's mounted externally in the tail of the fuse. It seems the throttle servo gets mounted where ever it suits your engine throttle linkage which is on the left upper portion of the engine mount. I still need to order a 3.5" spinner for the plane. Looking like Tru-Turn as well. [:D] Paul
Paul whatever switch works best for you. I used two stock Futaba HD switches for mine. For fuel dots they are pretty much all the same except the quick fuelers from Dubro. I wouldn't recommend those. The fuel Dots are a kind or K.I.S.S. method. I also put my switches in behind teh dorr so there are no exposed switches visible on the outside of the plane The Idle screw you can remove that completely if you want just make sure that your servo can control all positions of the throttle. There is nothing bad gonna happen if you remove it completely
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot I think I know what's going on with it taking a long time to get into RCU. I notice that on Threads that are new, and have, say, one page of posts, that it loads immediately. But this thread, which has well over 1600 posts, takes minutes to load, like three or four. Longer threads take even longer. That's to get into the thread, or to post a reply. Using the page numbers to shift pages is faster, but sometimes not much faster. RCU I.T. techies, please take note. I haven't been this frustrated with RCU usability in over five years. And yes, Foxfire is my browser, but guess what? It does it on the other browsers too. It's starting to get old. ~ Jim ~[:-]
Yep I've notice that it got slower too. Wierd never seemed to be like that before . Either way RCU has the best thread on this plane

It take nothing to hang the plane from it's gear off of a ladder and no table saw needed

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot No need for that. Take 2 pieces of two-by four, about 20 inches long each( cut off square at the ends), and run the center of each through a tablesaw. Stop the cut while you are still a few inches from the end. To know how far from the end to stop, figure the distance/difference between the back of your elevators and the back of your rudder, leaving minimally the same - preferably a little longer - as the distance between where the cut ends and the end of the wood. Do this a few times, increasing the width of the cut each time until the slot will hold your elevator and horizontal stab. If you rudder is shorter (not likely), then any distance you decide on will work. Take your two pieces, slide them over your elevator/stabs, and you can stand the plane on the ground, even though you already assembled your tail feathers. Then stand the fuse against the work bench (with some padding), and run a number of tapes around it and tape it to the workbench, with the open part facing you so you can best access the back of the firewall as you work. Secure it so the firewall is approximately level. If your landing gear is already mounted, take two long, thin pieces of wood and drill a hole though each near the end, and run a screw (or the axle) through the gear and the wood. Then, clamp the two pieces of wood to the side of the workbench as they hang straight down. Secure it so the firewall is approximately level. I hope this helps. ~ Jim ~[;)]
Paul did you get all that?? I think the pic your taling about is in the manual. You can download it from RC guys website. Cheers

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Buna-n is the preferred line to use over the Viton. The only case I would use it outside the tank is for a smoke system after the check valve to the muffler. Ohh yeah buna is also heat resistant :)

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I use Buna-n or Viton for inside my gas tanks. It's a little bit pricey but it will not go hard with time and being submerged in fuel or oil won't affect it like tygon will. I use Tygon on all exterior parts of the tank and the Buna on all the interior. One thing about buna and Viton is you need to use barbs on the brass tubes at the stopper
ORIGINAL: WI53072 Oh check that last statement, I will have the gear ch to use as my remote kill switch. So maybe the ailerons on 1 ch with a y connector and that will leave me Aux 2 for smoke!
I would much rather mix the two ailerons and then Y connect the elevators together. That way you can use flaperons if you wanted to. There isn't much mixing where you need only one elevastor half to move up.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot A couple more questions: Anybody have any opinions on how the included tail gear holds up? Is anyone running servos in the tail, and is it set up to be able to install servos back there? How big of a wheel could the wheelpants hold? I think I have a nice set of 4.5" Sullivans hanging around here. ~ Jim ~[8D]Wow, Thanks for the great responses, guys.
I have the supplied tail wheel assembly on mine and never had an issue. It's very well built. My two elevator servos are in the tail and there are two spots in the back of the fuse built in for the servos. My rudder servo is in the servo tray inside the fuse with pull pull cables. No issues with this set-up at all. You have the options to mount the elevator servos up beside the rudder servo if you wish to aswell if you wanted to. I think you could fit a 4.5" in the wheel pants they are actually quite big but you would have to cut out the opening a little bit bigger. I think the stock wheels are 3.5" but im not 100% on that. cheers Brad

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: TexasSkyPilot I've had my eye on this RC Guys Super Decathlon for some time now. I've built all of my other planes now, and I could s-q-u-e-e-z-e in just one more gasser. I'm pretty fond of the Syssa 30CC gassers, I already have two of them. Just one more wouldn't hurt, and I think it would fly this bird beautifully. I know; some will say I should have a 40CC or up in it, but I've researched this bird and it seems to fly sweet with a G26 or CRRC26 gasser on it. Besides, I've set a limit at 30CCs on all birds now. I haven't heard anybody saying anything too bad about this model, except one guy who called it junk after he stalled it at 50 feet while doing too-slow turns. I did that once with a very similar plane. The plane wasn't junk, the pilot (me) was flying with his brain on vacation. Okay, the plane WAS junk when I got through with it. Maybe that's what the other guy meant, eh? One thing I HAVE noticed is that nobody uses their wheel pants. What's up with that? A Super Decathlon MUST have wheel pants! Don't they hold up well? Also, how big are the wheels on these? Thanks, guys. I know, I should read the whole thread. I will, as soon as I can get the extra time. I did read joebob's post, and I'm usually wary enough to switch out the pin hinges with Robart brand pins. ~ Jim ~ [8D]
The Syssa 30cc will fly this plane awsome. No unlimited vertical but your typical how an RC plane flies type power. The plane itself is very well built. Only thing you might find annoying at first is the starts a strips on the wings will fly off on you at the start. I just went to my local sign shops and had them cut me out some new ones. I run my wheels pants.

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
ORIGINAL: quickdraw Question on hinges. I am at the point at the tail area to start to install the elevators and the rudder. I have read in earlier posts from awhile ago about issues with the hinges. I asked Dan about it and he told me not to worry about it. I mainly scale fly with loops and rolls, inverted flight but mainly scale. So no extreme stuff for me. Using a Saito 220 glow for the power plant on it. Biggest plane I now own and want everything good on it. Same thing I did when I built my 700 size nitro heli. Known issues I wanted to take care of just incase. Though I don't fly hard with it either. Thanks
I'd go ahead and use the supplied hinges. I used robart ones but wasn't realy nessesary. The qualitly was just as good. I tried a break test on the original ones and man they are hard to break! The only thing I would change are the aluminum control horns. I would swap them with Dubro ones
ORIGINAL: quickdraw Looking for prop selection help. Just ordered one from Dan. I will be using Saito 220 on it. Fun flyer is what I am mainly. Loops rolls and basics. I usually run W series APC 2 blade props or 3 blade style props on my Saito 100 on my U Can Do. Would like some recommendations on props needed in both 2 and 3 blade if possible for the Decathlon. Elevation is around 2800 feet normally but air density does change. Anywhere from 1800 up to 4200 corrected altitude with weather. Thanks for the help
Im using a Xoar carbon 18 x 8 on my FG-36. Your 220 is the same motor but glow. I believe the glow is slightly more powerfull. Should be able to use a 19 x 8 - 20 x 8 no problem. The xoar carbon have a very light load and spool up quick

RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
I think this plane is considerably lightly than the Dynaflight. I fly mine with an FG-36 and it has lots of power. No 3D machine but it will pull straight vertical for at least 500 feet before it semi hangs on the prop and starts slowy falling back down. Lots of wing on this plane If your going DA-60 I strongly recomend a 3 blade prop for it. I don't think you will have much clearance for a two blade. Them 60's swing a big prop
ORIGINAL: orthobird ouch, oops i ordered the plane and the engine should arrive this week. well, it will be interesting to see what happens. i compared to dle 55. DLE 55 weighs 1550 grams DA 60 weighs 1517 grams DLE 55 HP is 5.5 Da 60 HP is 6.0 the mounting area for DA 60 is slightly smaller than for the dle 55 quite comparable i believe. the reason i went big is because the last sup decath i had, the dynaflite, had a 4 cycle fg 36 saito, and the plane weighed in at 19 pounds or so, and it was way underpowered. i know this bird is slightly bigger than the dynaflite. i guess will keep you al posted on how it turns out. RE: RC Guys Super Decathlon coming
Congrats Joe! Mine had a bit of bank one way to the first time I flew. I just trimmed it out and thats it. Your probly finding the roll rate slow because of flying 3d planes. I know the manual calls for some aileron differential but I took mine out. The full scale Decathlon doesn't use any differential so I said the heck with it and it rolls pretty nice now.
