RE: Scratch Built Floats Question ???
Thanks for the continued input guys. It sounds like glass then for the bottom. Since I've had limited experience with fiberglass tech, here's another question. Would it be better for the bottom surface to use say one 5 oz cloth layer or two 2 oz cloth layers laminate? For surfacing the sides and top I was considering either 1/16 or 3/32 balsa, or 1/64 lite ply. I'm thinking that the ply may add more longitudinal strength? I've used the 1/64 before on my first set of floats that are on a LT-40. Great stuff to work with using 3M #77 spray on contact cement. Over either material I'd use a layer of 6/10 oz. microglass. Thanks Guys!

Thanks for the great input. What type of glue would you recommend? In the past I've used 3M 77 and expoxy. Any suggestions? I included a pic of the floats. Thanks!

Scratch Built Floats Question ???
I'm building 42" floats and gear for a GP 90" cub. The floats are foam core with a length wise lite ply center bulkhead. The gear is constructed out of 1/2" aluminum tubing that I aero-shaped and tig welded to a aluminum mounting plate for postioning onto the fuse. The floats are shaped similiarly to the Sea Commander SCALE FLAT TOPPED EDO FLOATS. Question: Because of the deep nature of the v-bow design and the compound angles that result, how would you suggest that I balsa sheet the bottom? I plan on using lite glass cloth and resin. Should I forego the balsa and just use extra glass on the bottom? Thanks for the suggestions!

RE: For those of you that have a Kadet Sr. on Floats
Here is a pic of my LT 40 on floats. I used 1/2" aluminum flat stock. The floats were scratch built. Make sure that you use at least one water rudder. It makes taxing a lot easier especially with a breeze. http://www.geocities.com/planefunfloats/ is a great source for very nice foam/balsa sheeted floats. Good Luck!

Float set up for a GP 90" Cub
Going for my second pair of floats for this project. The first was for my LT 40. This time its for a 90" Cub. I'm somewhat interested in a scale appearance about in line with a somewhat scale Cub. What I'm kinda stuck on is the geometry/look of the gear. I'm trying to keep the gear as short as possible with the appropriate scale like angles. I've read that the floats need to be set at 25% width of the wing. Question- does that include the width of the float to it's outer edge or is it the center line of the float or mounting point? My floats are 5.75" wide. Divided in half, that would mean that the center line would be less than 20"?? Thanks in advance for the info! Bruce

RE: float set-up and wing incidence
Jerry, As far as I know, the 2-3 degrees are correct but the reference point is the datum or thrust line of the airplane. 2-3 degrees off the datum line gives the floats a slight downward angle from the fuselage/datum line. The datum line is an extension of the crank shaft of the engine.

Joe, Hope that you can see the detail of how I routed the pull pull lines. I used spider wire fishing line which runs through very small islet hooks screwed into epoxied on airplane ply. Let me know if you need better close up shots or have questions. Bruce

Thanks for the replies! Just got a prompt response from Bruce Tharpe (what a great guy!). He confirmed that the ARF version is no longer available. That's a shame. What a well made, great flying, fun airplane! If I'm unable to repair my ARF, I'll have to put myself on the waiting list for the kit.

RE: 90 inch Cub - Who makes it?
Just tried the 120 on the nose for balancing purposes, and it's way to heavy. The battery would have to be mounted to the tail wheel. khodges, thanks for the gentle prod, it's way way overkill. Looks like a 91 FS would be more than enough. It balances perfectly with the battery in the main fuselage compartment. Thanks Again!

RE: 90 inch Cub - Who makes it?
szig, Thanks for the link! It looks like that would be a match. My plane came out to be `12 pounds RTF. Seems a little heavy for how a full size Cub should fly. Looks like a 120 engine would be a better match than a 70-90 as they specify.

AFPD Commander- Planes/Heli's "Jerky" in flight?
Have recently developed an annoying jerky action on heli's and planes while in flight. Other graphics are fine with no other issues. This is a recent condition. All was fine in the first few months of use. System specs are : Processor- 1.01 Ghz AMD, Video- 9800 XL , RAM- 640 M. Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks!

RE: JR 10X Airplane Radio use for Heli's???
Yea, they say that people who fly a 10X want a specialized radio, "that's our philosophy". Why can you fly both planks and heli's with a 9303???? Now there's an example of sticking with your philosophy.

JR 10X Airplane Radio use for Heli's???
I've been flying planes for a while now and am interested in trying out heli's. I have a JR 10X and was wondering if it can be used for a heli setup? Other than the throttle rachet, what other challenges are there in setting up heli's on this radio? Thanks!

RE: LT 40 Water Rudder - 1 or 2
Grampaw It would be the same set up, just driven from the nose gear. Run the pull pull the same as I did. I used small eyelet screws into small wood blocks epoxied to the float gear. I used spider wire fishing line to link it all together. Thanks for the kind words!

RE: LT 40 Water Rudder - 1 or 2
QF, Here are a few pics that I just took inside. Next spring I hope to get some water shoots. I found the twin rudders to be very helpful on a windy day. Jim is correct about the cross wind taxiing technique. You need to hold aileron on the side that the wind is approaching the airplane. And to think that I was almost ready to sell the old Kadet. Float flying is a BLAST! My son made a great video of the maiden float fly for the Kadet from Mountain Lake, NJ. What a great event! I wish there was some way of serving the video on RCU?? Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pics.

RE: LT 40 Water Rudder - 1 or 2
qfinger, figure on the same area of water that you would feel comfortable landing on land. Take offs can take up some lake because it takes some distance to break suction of the water. Landings require some water to get it lined up for what would be a greased landing on land. Dropping them in on water is harder on the equipment than on grass, plus the fact that it's really cool to bring them in just so on water and pull a nice wake in the process! I'll post some pics of my LT-40 with floats soon.
