RE: Extreme Flight RC Yak 54 - 74 inch!
I had the same problem with the fuel tank not fitting, i just cut the cross piece off the top of the second former back in the fus, you could then glue it back in after the tank is in but i didn't bother as it doesn't seem to affect the strength at all. Also i thought the tank floor was i bit high so i cut it loose and glued it in about 3/4 inch lower, centre line of the tank is now inline with the spraybar of the motor. Regards Brian

Seagull Dual Ace E conversion
Have just purchased a Seagull Dual Ace and was going to power it with 2 OS46's, then it occurred to me it should make quite an impressive electric twin. Only problem is i have very little experience of converting glow powered models to electric and are at a loss in selecting a suitable E power setup for this model. I would be very interested to hear any suggestions for suitable motors, (AXI's) props, speed controllers, packs etc. Any help much appreciated. Regards Brian

Top Gun 60-90 size Ultimate
Been on the lookout for a nice ARTF bipe suitable for a Saito 100 which i have not in use at the moment and i really like the look of the Top Gun Ultimate which has just started to be advertised here in the UK. Anyone have any experience of this model? Is it a new release from Top Gun or has it been available for some time, only not in the UK? RE: hand fuel pumps?
May i offer yet another possible contender for the "best" fuel pump? For years i used to use the Dubro hand cranked pump, it clamped onto the rim of a metal fuel can, this was the early 80's. worked great, very fast filling, never leaked, then after about 3 or 4 years (yes really!) it started to slow in its fill rate. Broke it open to see what was going on and found it was a "impeller" type pump and some of the impeller blades had broken off, i guessing probably due to constant exposure to glow fuel making them more brittle. Replaced it with the same type pump but this one didn't last half as long for some reason. Next one i tried was the "DB Six Shooter", never had any luck with it, slow fill rate and was a lot harder to crank compared to the Dubro pump. Next i tried a electric pump for the first time, a Kavan one made in Germany. It had a 12v motor and brass gears to do the pumping and was superb with a very fast fill rate ( i had to zip lock all connections or they would blow off!) and never leaked. Eventually it also started to slow up, what was happening was fuel eventually began leaking from the pump unit into the motor and getting onto the brushes and causing the slower speed. Stripping the motor and cleaning the brushes was only a temporary cure. Tried 2 more of the same type of pump and they both went the same way, only much quicker. Anyway, to cut a long story short after MANY failures the pump i am using now and have for the past 2 years with ZERO problems using mainly 30% nitro fuel is the MK Fuel pump, manual version which is made in Japan Best Regards Brian

Hi Dave Thanks for the tip re using small servo arms to retain the hatches. I'm also going to use a OS160 which i have just received. Going to start off initially with the standard muffler and a APC 18x6w prop and take it from there, although i'm already thinking about a Just-Engines 160 size purple pipe setup! Should be a lot of fun, can't wait! Best regards Brian

Tunnel Vision wing retention?
I have just received my Chip Hyde Tunnel Vision and i have to say i'm very impressed with the overall quality. After a good read of the assembly manual it all seems very straightforward, but the only thing i am slightly unsure of is are the wing panels supposed to just slide onto the tube joiner and locating peg as nowhere in the manual is any mention of the wings being pyhsically attached to stop the panels possibly sliding along the tube joiner in flight. Would appreciate any comments/suggestions Best Regards Brian

RE: westonuk groove freestyle
Mickey I also had a lot of trouble fitting the cowl, i mentioned this in the freestyle thread in the 3D section. The cowl fitted the fus OK, but when i fitted the engine mount using the predrilled holes and then mounted the motor, the crankshaft was about 1/2 inch too low for the spinner to line up, no matter how much i tried to angle the cowl to fit. In the end i used a different mount (slec) and redrilled the firewall. Sorting the motor mount took longer than the rest of the assembly put together! Regards Brian

RE: Groove freestyle (Irvine 53?)
Hope it was just me being unlucky receiving a kit with a faulty tail, ref the grain direction. Something i would definitely check for though. As i said in my earlier post the tail didn't fail due to flutter, abuse in the air or cutting the tail when trimming the covering, it did simply break off when flying straight & level at moderate speed. Suprisingly the handling felt just the same with half a tail!! After sticking the tail back on and adding bracing it has so far defied all attempts to deliberately break it in the air! Regards Brian

RE: Groove freestyle (Irvine 53?)
On mine the centre section of the tail did indeed have the grain running front to back and so provided very little strength in the direction needed (spanwise). The main strength comes from the leading and trailing edges, both of which looked of too small a section to me, hence the failure. Not what i would consider up to the job. Regards Brian

RE: Saito 82 or 100 ???
Don't want to start any arguments here, but from the small amount of time i have being reading rcuniverse (about 4 months) one thing that i have noticed is that the US flyers seem to look at a models recommended engine range, then double it!! May be a bit of a exaggeration but you get the idea. I have a Funtana 40 with a Saito 82 and i consider it MORE than ample for 3d type flying, also i have a UCD 60 with a Saito 100 and again i would say its more than enough, to me the power of a Saito 100 in a Funtana 40 or a UCD 46 would be a waste and completely unnecessary. I have heard the argument for "more power helps you get out of trouble quicker" but i tend to think too much power will more likely lead to getting into trouble. I have watched a lot of the best 3d flyers in the UK at various shows, fly ins, etc and invariably they are not flying grossly overpowered models but are sticking to the recommended engine range and i doing things with the model i can only dream about! I personally fly more 3d heli flying than fixed wing and i will admit to following the trend for 90 powered helis, i still have a couple of 60 powered models and i can do everything with the lowered models as i can with the 90 powered models, it just requires a bit more care (dare i say skill). Not exactly the same as fixed wing but you get the idea. As i said i am not knocking overpowered models, just would like to know why it is so popular (other side of the pond anyway!!) Best regards and a merry xmas Brian

RE: Groove freestyle (Irvine 53?)
Just been flying my Freestyle today with the repaired and wire braced tail after last weekends tail breaking excitment and thankfully everything stayed in one piece, despite trying to get it to break again by doing silly things like full power dives with violent pull outs! Certainly if i assembled another i would add the wire bracing before flying, even though i accept mine may have just been a rogue example. Once bitten twice shy and all that! BTW can anyone comment more on the change of tail design between prototypes and production versions? Best regards and merry xmas Brian

RE: Groove freestyle (Irvine 53?)
Have fitted a JEN 56 with the supplied SQ silencer in mine and flew it for the first time last sunday, went very well, even when half the tailplane completely broke off half way thru the second flight!!!. Landed ok but a bit suprised why it happened. I was flying straight and level at the time and although it was on full throttle the motor was running very rich so it wan't going particulary fast (APC 12x6 prop). There was no slop in the elevator linkage and hinge lines were 1/16 inch and sealed. At the time i did not hear or see any flutter but it all happened so fast i don't know if this was the cause or not. BTW i trimmed the covering from the centre section of the tail with the tip of a hot soldering iron instead of using a scalpel blade and possibly scoring the wood and weakening it, just so this sort of thing would'nt happen! After looking at the broken off half i noticed the wood used for the leading and trailing edge was of a fairly small section and the centre section piece of the tail had the grain running chord wise rather than span wise, and had simply broke along the grain. Have simply glued the tail back together with medium ca and added bracing wires top and bottom, hope it all holds together!! Any suggestions or comments? Regards Brian

RE: westonuk groove freestyle
Hi, for people already flying the groove freestyle, did you find the engine mount bolt holes in the firewall in the correct place? The reason i ask is that on my particular model when i bolted the engine in and slipped the cowl in place the crankshaft was 1/2-3/4 inch to low and no amount of trying to angle the cowl would allow the spinner to line up. Also what mufflers are you using? I have fitted a JEN56 motor and using the supplied SQ silencer i will need a exhaust extension of about 1/2 inch to clear the bottom of the fuselage,as well as needing a big cutout in the bottom of the cowl, so i tried a weston throttle pipe which i naturally though would fit, infact it clashed even more with the fus and would require a exhaust spacer of over 1 inch thick to fit!! Any suggestions? Regards Brian

RE: YS 110 idle setting
Think i have found the reason my YS110 needed the idle needle to be fully screwed in to obtain a decent idle (and no it wasn't because i didn't know what i was doing and needlessly adjusted things!). The screws holding the air chamber were loose allowing air to be drawn in leading to a lean mixture, hence the fully rich idle needle setting required. After tightening the above mentioned screws the engine idled perfectly with the idle needle open 1& 1/4 turns.[:D] Just ordered another YS110, you bet i will be sure to check all bolts/screws for tightness! YS 110 idle setting
Hi all Ran my new YS 110 today for the first time, used about 3/4 gallon of Magnum 20% and everything appears fine except for the fact that to obtain a reasonable idle the idle needle has to be screwed fully in, ie full rich. Main needle is open 1 & 7/8 turns. Transition, mid range & full throttle is fine. If idle needle is not screwed fully in motor will die almost immediately when throttled back. Prop is APC 16x6. Does this sound like the regulator needs adjusting slightly and if so which way? Regards Brian

RE: New YS110, keep UCD or move on?
I've got 16x4 and 16x6 APC to try for the YS. Also going to use Magnum 20% fuel in it as this is the fuel i standardised on for all my heli's. Good fuel with plenty of oil and also its cheaper than Coolpower 15 which i used to use. Just need some half decent weather now to get some practice in on my U-Can-Do before flying the Funtana (or Yak!) Brian

Andy Yep, i spoke to Daniel yesterday morning and he's going to give me a call when the Yaks arrive, hopefully wednesday. I was going to put my new YS 110 in the Funtana but now the YS is going into the Yak and i'am going to use a Saito 100 i've just bought of ebay for the Funtana. Just bought some new digital servos for the Funtana, Futaba S3152. This servo has just become available in the UK and the specs and price seen very good, 5.0 kg-cm and 0.22sec/60 at 4.8v and only £23.55 from Inwoods. For the Yak i have some Futaba S9206 servos out of one of my helis, probably a bit of overkill at 9.5 kg-cm. Busy couple of weeks ahead building (assembly)!! Regards Brian
