RE: Taplin Twin
Fiery, I don't think Mr. Kumar's remark was motivated by engine performance criteria. I've been running my Taplins since I purchased my first one in 1963, and I agree with Mr. Kumar. I'm pretty sure that, in principle, he would approve an old soft plastic prop as well, except that they don't exist in the sizes normally needed for a TT, hence the wood recommendation. I don't usually comment on all this, because it's all down to personal choices and feelings but, personally, I hate to see a nice old engine running on a prop that's potentially stronger than the engine and a lot harder than my fingers. For this reason, over the years (decades!), I've built up a considerable collection of wooden and old soft plastic props (several hundred). Yesterday, I indulged in my regularly needed shot of engine running... a 1949 ED Bee, an ED Pep and two very early Allouchery 1.25 engines, and I only used old Topflite plastic props (superb!). There must be other ol' fools around, like me, who think a CF prop on a Mills .75 just ain't right!

RE: Diamonds in the rough
Further to the above post, which was just based on my own engines, I had a look through my Micron documentation, and I found the wire loop compression lock on a 1958 Météore 2.5 beam/radial mount engine, so it goes back to before 1960.

RE: Diamonds in the rough
Hi all, Earlier in this thread (which I've just found), there was some discussion about the wire loop compression locking arrangement and the origins thereof. The Micron 2.5R ("sport" & "course") used this arrangement from about 1960, which probably means that, as far as Micron is concerned, it was invented by Serge Malfait around 1960. Paradoxically, I think all Micron 2.5R engines had some kind of comp. screw lock, but I've never seen one that needed it! One finds this little wire loop arrangement, and the more obvious coil spring over the comp. screw, in about equal numbers. I'll post photos if anyone's interested. It occurs to me that it really is just an "extension" of the well-known Micron principle of wire loop locking, as used on their fuel needles since the beginning.
