Funeral for my KDS 450C....
Well my fleet of KDS 450's is now down to 2 atl least until I rebuild one from the worst crash I have had yet. Yesterday I was flying around when I decided that I was going to add another helicopter to my transmitter. All was fine so I binded it to my transmitter but in the process of my preflight I made the grave mistake of reversing a chnnel on accident. The helicopter when I put it in idle mode completely freaked out and went about 200 feet up I killed the the throttle and was hoping to give a max burst of throttle about five feet off the ground, well that didnt work out well she met the concrete with a brutal force hahaha. TOTAL DAMAGES 1. CANOPY 2. FRAME BROKEN 3. 2 SERVOS 4. BATTERY 5. MOTOR 6. ENTIRE HEAD ASSEMBLY including BLADES 7. MY HEART

RE: beginner heli pilot needs help
Very well put!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ORIGINAL: ArtW There are three very separate issues that you are confusing. The first is the thrust from the rotor necessary to hovering is greater than that for forward flight. In forward flight there is transitional lift from air coming into the rotor plane from I front of the heli. When one stops to hover additional lift is necessary from that level for forward flight. You must either increase rotor speed in a fixed pitch heli which takes time secondary to the inertia of the rotor head or increase pitch in a collective pitch heli. The second issue is ground effect. When you are within one rotor diameter of the ground there is increased lift from the back pressure of the rotor wash hitting the ground. So less lift is necessary as you hover within one rotor diameter of the ground than at higher altitudes. The third issue is the ring vortex state. If you descend vertically through your roter wash at more than 500 feet per minute in a full sized heli or some speed in an RC you can force air to recirculate and decrease lift. This also happens when you try to hover or land in an enclosed space like a walled court yard. The heli that crashed in Abattabod likely had ring vortex state loss of lift trying to descend rapidly into a walled compound. They had practiced with walls that were permeable (cyclone fence) and then had ring vortex when the walls were solid. So you must separate these effects when thinking of how to decelerate to hover prior to landing. In full size helis there are weight loadings and altitude/temperature situations where they can't hover prior to landing and must land with forward velocity to take advantage of the transitional lift. What you need to practice is slowing to a hover prior to decent to allow the fixed pitch rotor time to speed up so you can hover in ground effect. Then slow the rotor speed to land.
Very Good point about the low forward flight keeping the vortex behind you didnt even think about that!!!!!

RE: beginner heli pilot needs help
The best I can say is your caught in the rotor wash area wich for me is a very dangerous place. Since your flying micro helis there is not a whole lot you can do. With my T-rex 100 I try to come in for a landing quickly bring it to a hover above the rotor wash area and bring it down until it feels like its on that cushion of rotorwash thenas soon as your skids are level and are about to tough the landing zone kill the motor. the best i can say is landing a helicopter is nothing more than a controlled crash practice practice

RE: Hello all need help deciding on FP Heli
thanks guys im also eyeing the Honey Bee king 3 I have a simulatorand have been practicing but im concerned about my knowledge as to how to setup CP helis. I really havent found anything online as to how to use the pitch gauge or any of the other setup and there is no hobby shops or heli pilots within a very good distance. I would love to fly outside i currently fly my T-Rex 100 and my Blade Cx2 and a nine eagles bravo SX which by the way I bought the nine eagles bravo SX for 60 bucks rtf and its a super fun FP heli. I would love to find a good tutorial on how to setup a CP heli but all I find is just how tos not any beginners guide to steting up a CP guide thanks for the replys fellas

Hello all need help deciding on FP Heli
Hello all I am fairly new to RC helis and totally new to this forum so thanks for your help in advance. I am in the market for a outdoor FP heli that can handle very slight wind. I have been looking at the E-Sky Honeybee V2, Walkera UflyS, and the Walkera CB180Z. I would welcome all suggestions about each of these and which would be suited for an intermediate pilot without all the setup of CP helis simply because I just dont know how to setup one. Looking for a RTF package 200.00 or less thanks again.
