RE: Futaba 3004 servo's and A123 battery packs
I think 3004s are rated for 6v. I had (still have) problem with A123 and analog servos (3001, HS225mg, 625mg). After few flights (~20??) I started seeing gliches on servos. Replaced the servos with digitals (HS 7965) and there were no glitches. Last saturday I had another flight with A123 and HS625 on throttle; first flight went ok, while preparing for second flight, throttle servo started dancing. Replaced A123 with NiMH 6v and all was ok. I'm still not happy not being able to use A123, a hangtimes 2300mah pack. Last night I tore the cover apart; all the joints on battery looked ok to me except that I see VERY SLIGHT rust on the +'ve ends. welds are solid though. I'm having feeling that I got goddxxn faulty pack (I noticed the gliches only when the engine (glow) was running - may be vibration effect). for now I'm on NiMH. I see everywhere on this forum people using A123 with success, and I'd sure like to use A123. I think I'm going to order another pack and try. I think, if you are using low torque servos and subjecting them to max loads on 6volts regularily , they are probably not going to be happy for long. Better to use 6v/A123 on high torque servos. FYI - I've very limited experience with A123. Edit: added- I did one more test at home. Took out the a123 pack from airframe and connected to rx. no gliches on any servos. started tapping the pack with my hand (trying to simulate the vibration effect), had repeatable glitches on analog servo; i think i noticed may be only 1 or two gliches on degital servo. I could find the faulty joint in the battery eventually, shaking which was causing the glitch. I think glich was more noticeable on analog servo than on digital (that's the reason I thought that only analog servos were glitching). Net net, - pack was faulty and I have dumped it (don't have welding equipement to fix it, also i'm not comfortable with this pack now) - analog as well as digital servos probably would work equially good on a123 as they are working for others. so your 3004 should be good with a123. I think my hs225mg and s3001 which I had replaced with digitals, were in fact not having issue with a123. - Optima-7 worked fine with 6v Will buy another A123 pack and install. Hopefully will get good pack this time. I'm really interested in using A123 since I'd be moving to bigger birds. I just wish I don't face this issue again [:@] Thanks.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Thanks for replying Mike. I understand 225mg subject to max loads on high voltage will lead to shorter life. For me it's on 46size models elevator (low throws). Will use 625mg on throttle so that's almost no load for this servo. Will replace 225mg by 7965mg. A123 is proving costly :-) Sorry about streching servos related questions on this thread; wan't sure initially if it was Rx problem.
ORIGINAL: gsoav8r For what its worth heres my list of Hitec Sx's that have been working no prob on 6v 1700mah Nicads. My packs typically peak at 7.3v. I only run 6v packs with my Optima's. 81 82 85 300 475 485 605 635 5055 Cheers.
Thanks for the list! As you mentioned, you are using them on optima/6v, have these servos gone sufficient number flights? say 20-30 flights on 6v? I started seeing the problem only after flying for quite sometime on A123.
ORIGINAL: Gungadin I toasted two Hitec 225BB servo's with A123 batt. They each lasted for about 15 flights. I had them on the throttle. Don't think they can handle the 7.2 volts fresh off the charger. Switched them out to Futaba digitals and have no more issues.[;)]
It's relaxing to hear such definite answers (sorry about your toast though), atleast then I know that receiver/Battery is ok. Freshly charged 6v NiMH also reaches 7v or so. I think Hitech should stop saying these servos are rated for 6v (or atleast should mention to use regs). Anyone faced A123 problem with HS625MG? I have a spare 625mg but scared to put analog servo to 6v lest they go toast/mad.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
ORIGINAL: rctom I see that you were using a Hitec 225 on elevators, that's an analog servo. Let me tell you about something that happened to me about a year ago. I had a 100cc size plane with 2 Hitec 985s on ailerons. It had a Futaba radio, 12FG FASST. The plane had about 20-25 flights on it without any problems. During a flight I noticed the plane had become a little glitchy in the roll axis. Normally I attribute that type of behavior to wind, but this day it was not windy. So I brought the plane down and observed the ailerons on the ground with the engine running. I could see that from time to time the ailerons with the 985s were jumping around, and not just a little, they were jumping to half throw. Now the two servos on each wing were tied together with a Y cable, so I disconnected the control horn on one servo and retested, the ailerons still jumped. I tried one side only, then the other. All 4 servos were jumping around, although none of the other servos in the plane were jumpy. I pulled them out and replaced them with something else, I don't remember what, but they worked fine. The problem was with the Hitec 985 analog servos, something had happened and after 4 hours of use they developed this bad behavior. I sent them in to Hitec who sent them back saying there was nothing wrong with them. I tested them in another plane and they were still jumpy, so I tossed them and quit buying/using/selling them. This all sounds familiar, your 225 going glitchy after working properly for a long time. Try replacing that servo with something else, either a new one of the same servo or some other digital servo. I love Hitec products but their service department seems to have a narrow focus with a fixed test setup, if the product passes then it's OK no matter what the customer says. In this case I talked to them 3 times on the phone to clarify the problem, had they tested them in a live environment it would have been completely obvious that they were not working. But I'm guessing they just tested them on a bench where there was no vibration. TF
Did some analysis this weekend. I changed switch and 2 aileron servos from s3001 to hs7965mg and a rudder s3001 to hs7965mg. Some testing on the ground- Noticed no glitches when engine (glow) is not running. With engine on idle- 1. With A123 6v pack - no gliches on ailerons and rudder servos whatsoever. Elevator and throttle which have the hs225mg and s3001 respectively, has repeatable distinct gliches. Cant' fly. 2. With NiMH 4.8V - no glitches anywhere. Had safe 2-3 flights with this battery. Conclustion: My old switch was not the culprit. hs225mg and s3001 can't handle A123 6v (which usually charges to around 6.8 to 7v whencharged through FMA multipro 4) for long. OR my A123 6v pack is not good (vibration effect?? why glitches when only engine is running). But then why no issue on aileron and rudder (7965mg digitals) which I had earlier with s3001s. Need to test one more scenario before I replace either battery or remaining servos with digitals: Replace A123 pack with NiMH 6v and test (unfortunately I had no niMH 6v to test). If issue remains then I'll not buy HS analog servos again [&o] since I want to use 6v with 2.4G. If issue is resolved then I lost $50 on A123 pack and will be scared to buy again (I want to go A123 way though as I go for 30cc or 50cc). Thoughts? suggestions?? pls...

Elevator servo for 50cc
I think something similar was asked earlier, but I'm not able to locate that thread. For most 50cc (88") 3D planes HS7955TG (or equivalent) is recommended on all surfaces. My guess is elevator area is smaller as compated to ailerons. so do you think one 7965MG on EACH elevator half will be good enough?

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
ORIGINAL: MikeMayberry What you describe is puzzling... perhaps those servos don't like the A123's? If you lost signal it wouldn't jump like that but would just freeze the controls in their last position. At least that's what they're supposed to do as I have yet to see a system lock out. Yes, the timer beeps every minute. You can also get a beep from the sliders if you bump them, but the more concerning beeps are from the module if there is a low battery or the voltage sags. Mike.
Mike, These servos not behaving good with A123 after 10+ flights... not sure if that can be the reason. Both S3001(ailerons) and HS 225MG (elevator) are rated for 6v so no point in replacing A123 with 6v NiMH if they are still not liking 6v. Should I try 4.8V? Have already replaced the switch. Thanks.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
Guys, while flying yesterday I faced some strange glitches on my 46 size MX2. 1. During my first flight of the day, I think it was around 4-5 into the flight, and suddenly the plane went into knife edge attitude from horizontal flight. I got it level within no time (1 or 2 seconds). Didn’t feel like that have lost control to the Rx, it just moved very quickly to this knife edge attitude as if I was on high rates. I fly on low rates and plane normally roles very slow. Again after a minute or two plane suddenly did this again, this time more severely and it went into spiral dive for around 2-3 seconds before I pulled the elevator and got it back. I landed the plane immediately after that. Had been flying around half throttle and not too high. Made sure the servo/battery connections were fine. I did a range check on the ground and decided to fly again. 2. On second flight, my first circuit after take-off and there was glitch on elevator servo and plane did a quick high nose up. Again I got it leveled immediately without feeling that I lost connection to Rx. And again after 5 seconds or so it did same jerky high nose up. Landed safely immediately after this . This time also flew around half throttle and low (may be around 50-60 feet up) Here is set up of my model: It’s a 46 size 57. 2 S3001 on ailerons; 1 HS 225MG mini on elevator, S3001 on rudder and throttle 1 each. Optima- 7; Hangtimes 2300mah A123 6.6 V; A regular switch. Tx on normal mode. Rx battery was charged night before and Tx read 6.7v before flight. Tx was charged overnight and showed around100-80%. Before yesterday, I had at least 25-30 uneventful flights on this setup (but less than around 10 flights on Rx A123, before that I was on NiMH 6v). The switch I had used on this model was one which I had recovered from my prev model’s crash (had opened the switch and inspected, it is in good condition). Not sure what happened here. Not much analysis. Battery is new and in good condition. Servos are in good condition. Y harness to aileron servos is HD and new. The rudder metal pull pull cables which are in cross configuration, rub each other; this can cause interference, but why now, have flown this earlier without problem. Can my Rx go faulty? Antenna is safely mounted and the tip of it protrudes an inch outside the fuse. For now, before my next flight - 1. I’m replacing my switch with a new HD switch assuming the engine vibration is causing problem to the switch. But even it is power loss, can the behavior be explained? I know it takes split second in normal mode to bind, and after the glitch I didn’t hear any of those 4 fast beeps of rebinding. So binding probably was not an issue. 2. Will do the binding to Rx in normal mode again. Don’t know what else to check. Any help will be appreciated. Anything you can suggest me to look into. I’m not much inclined to replace the receiver until I know that this will cure the problem. Couple of more things to add here is - I have not set any fail safe (my fault, will set before flying next time). - When Tx is on and transmitting, I hear a beep every minute (I guess it’s every minute). My guess is it’s because timer is on. Is it normal? Thanks.

I agree completely [sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif] Michel
I also faced this problem. In normal mode, while doing the range check the system shifted to scan mode (or I might have done something stupid to change the mode). Thought it was binding issue. I could only realise after I saw significant delay in rx response after switching on the tx. Managed to come back to normal mode using the manual. Later we did range check on a friends A9 without any such problem. I still think it would be good idea to have alternate binding mechanism where you plug the rx to tx through wire and say "bind now".

RE: A123 Packs for Rx: which connectors to use
Finally I got my batteries and FMA cellpro charger from hangtimes after long wait with custom clearance. The battery that I got is - A123 2 cell 6.6v 2300 Series Rx or Ignition pack Charge Node/Tap Connector Options: 22g Univ Pack Power Feed Conncector Options: 20g 3 Wire Combo Univ And now I'm confused on connectors/wires. This battery has two connectors (univ), both with 3 wires (one with orange/red/black and other with white/red/black). I'm confused which is cell tap and which is power feed to Rx/switch. Since both connectors are with 3 wires I'm tending to think that I can use either of them for power feed (can't find visual diff between 22g and 20g wires) and can use either of them for balance charging the pack. Any idea on identifying the wire would be great help. Also, I don't think FMA cellpro has discharge facility; what can a cheaper way of discharging the batteries safely (not below 2v/cell).

Mike, How to de-link an already bound optima? (suppose I loan my "bound" rx to someone in field who also has A9 and binds to this rx; until I de-link the rx from my A9, won't we have interference?) Why not have an enhancement in next ver of software which has screens to show the list of all the rxs (say, some id?) which were/are bound to this tx and the status of binding? Also, can't we have simpler way of binding the rxs? Say, connect the rx to tx through some connector (to trainner port?) and say somewhere in screen " bind now" and it's done!! [:D] Thanks.

A123 Packs for Rx: which connectors to use
I've been using NiMh on my 72MHz receivers. Now that I'm moving to 2.4 (Optima) I'm planning to use 6v and am very much interested in A123 6.6v/2003Mah packs from Hangtimes. CellPro looks like a great charger for A123s. However before I buy A123 pack there are few things where I'm confused (even after going through the FAQ at hangtimes and A123 for dummies thread at FG). Pls help... my queries are 1. What connectors should I chose on the 2300Mah A123 pack, given that I'm going to use Hitec receivers/HD switches and quite likely CellPro charger. I'm ok to remove the pack from airframe for charging. 2. Do I need balance tap? If yes, then what connector - Univ/CellPro 3. Does the CellPro provide cycle function? Do I need to do A123 pack cycling? I'm quite likely going to use this charger for cycling my existing 4.8v NiMh (which I plan to use on ignition) as well. Any other good charger recomendation for both A123 and NiMh (how about GTPOWERA6-D ?) Thanks.

RE: New Hitec Aurora 9-Channel 2.4Ghz Radio System
I got my Aurora yesterday. DHL delivered in 4 days from Singapore. Waited for a while on tower back order list, then I knew I won't be in, so cancled tower and got from Rotor Singapore. I bought the A9+ Optima9+ 4X HS-7965MG + 4.8v 1300mah Rx and the 1300mah Tx NiMH + A HD switch combo. Latest version 1.06. [:D]

It's "MID FEB"!! Placed my order on Tower on Feb-01 (latest member in back order ?!?! [:)] ) and I'm optimistic. Who knows if they start processing back order list backwards!! [sm=lol.gif]
