RE: Go ahead and say it! It'll never happen to me!
You bet Andrew. While I dabble some into E power I have no packs over 2S or 450 mah. I do prefer ICE (internal combustion engines) Where there is more safety from such accidents but this is just a wake up call to be careful in all aspects of our hobby. I think we all have had our fair share of close calls of one sort or another but we sometimes fall into a 'comfortable' time and might let things slip. Robert

RE: Home made Cox Texaco
ORIGINAL: jsesere I am building a not for competition Texaco .049 engine from spare parts. I have everything need except a piston/cylinder. I don't want to buy a new one and I was wondering if I could substitute a #4 piston/cylinder from a Tee Dee .049? I'm guessing it would work and have a little more power. Any pros and cons anyone can think of? Thanks
What jsesere is trying to do is simply take a complete Texaco engine that needs a cylinder and pistyon and without trying to duplicate the qualities of the Texaco engine, to simply put together an engine that will haul his Cox Thermal Hawk into the sky to have fun flying. My answer is to save the Tee Dee assembly for a Tee Dee and just use a common Sure Start assembly. Robert

RE: Which is Upline ?
E3D, The guys who have posted before me have given you good advice though some is possibly far more advanced than you need for now. There really is no written rule that I know of to follow and at the time the picture you supplied in your first post was printed the usual arrangement was to go with what was simple. Typically most half A models as you showed us have the up line at the rear and the down in the front. I also believe the model shown in that picture was designed to have the elevator horn on the underside of the elevator. Since the stab and elevator are mounted higher than the wing, this would mean a simple straight pushrod with no bends in the middle and would make the rear lead out line the 'up' line. Look closely at the pictures I have modified and you will see that the picture has been changed to show the elevator horn and its enlarged detail more clearly to the reader. One could argue that the plane just needs the slight bend shown to link the push rod but I really believe it would be best to have the elevator horn protrude downward for simplicity. Robert

RE: superbee
To my knowledge, the Super Bee engine was used in the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and came with a cylinder having 2 transfer ports. I have read elswhere that it used the Tee Dee cylinder and piston but have no idea if this is true. The Super Bee may have been available as an engine alone and again not sure. More power than the Baby Bee or Golden Bee for sure but I don't think it would be significantly better than the engines currently available with the readily available double slit twin port cylinders. I also have my doubts tha the Super Bee ever came from Cox wit the extended tank. Show us a picture of yours? Robert

Bernie, I have seen a thread for your wonderful mount in three different forums now and have been waiting for the inevitable to happen. Someone out there is going to whine that the Norvel .049 and .061 won't fit! Or possibly will raise the question of WHY they don't fit. Pretty sure the regulars here know the answer. Just a heads up for later when it is bound to happen! I think someone once said some wouldn't be happy if hung with a new rope! Robert

RE: Neatly Adjust CG forward
Actually the model of the Air Scout shown on the Black Hawk web site is a non flying 'model' created just for these pictures. It has no fuel tank, no bell crank, no push rod, no lead outs and since this one was not meant to fly, it was not important where the CG fell on this one. Robert

Earl, thanks for sharing with us. qoute: " You used to get a tool with every engine you bought." In fact, I believe with the Cox .049 engines you would get two. These tools are not showing up with every engine purchase anymore athough there were probably tons of them made. Robert

RE: Neatly Adjust CG forward
The Tee Dee is a high performance engine! It may not seem so on a plane as large as a Piece O' Cake Glider But you will certainly find out on a plane with 18" span C/L plane like this one! Best to use a 6X2 prop if you do. Don't bother to try shorter lines till you start with the 30' lines first, then you decide whether you need to go shorter. Have you made sure your elevator hinge is free yet? Neither line length, balance nor engine choice will matter if you cannot control the plane. Robert

RE: Carolina 1/2A Reedie Race And Flyin PICTURES!!!!
Guys... My heart swells to see such goings on. I wish so much to have been even a small part of it. Thank you so much for the great pictures of the guys, models and most especially the younguns. :) Vicman said: " Not sure. There were a bunch of CL planes there without a doubt. Bob has a bunch of pics to show. I know there were 4 Wizards there and they all flew...including mine. The wind was pretty horrendous, the kids really did a great job of flying considering how hard it was." The CG Wizard had big claims of the only 1/2 A that flys on 52 foot lines and handled more wind to boot. Not trying to take away from the skills that were shown by the youngsters! The pictures show what looks like great weather. Very nice y'all. One day maybe... Robert

RE: LAZYBEE FIFTEEN !!!
Chuck, I have thought long and hard about your plane's behavior and it acts like the airfoil is too thin and/or the leading edge is too sharp. Someting more blunt would be in order. That said, the pictures you have posted don't show the airfoil as being either too thin nor too sharp... As for wing incedence, this could be the culprit. You could try by shimming in say one or two degrees positive incidence and try that. Robert

RE: Help identifying Cox wheels
Here is the best picture I have of the 1st generation Prop Rod showing both front and rear tires. Obvious is the tread style on the rear being different so as all have said, these just have to be fronts with ribbed tread. I have never owned these but I hope the picture can be of some help. The prop rod underwent a number of changes over the years and therefore have more than one variation. Robert

RE: Hey guys!
ORIGINAL: bobzwik I just realized that I maybe should have put this topic in the Beginners section. <img alt='''' src=''http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/tounge_smile.gif'' />
This forum is also good and proper for your questions and posting. Better, I think than the beginners forum as they are mostly radio control and not C/L. Speaking of C/L, there is a forum for that and your questions and posts would fit in there as well: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/forumid_231/tt.htm "Again about the fuel tank. What do I use to connect it to the engine? I bought this flying kit http://www.greathobbies.com/productinfo/?prod_id=SIGSH566 and I am wondering if that little tube is the connector." No, that is for the syringe to fuel the tank. " If it is the second, is the same size tubing okay as a fuel-engine connector?" Yes. You will need a length of this same size tube for the connection from tank to engine. "it does not say where to put the fuel tank. I am thinking right now of tie-wrapping it to the side of the nose. Is that a good idea?" Yes but there are better ways to do it. The Brodak MK II .049 Engine by Brodak... I don't have any experience with this engine myself but from what I know, it should fly the plane. Before you go to the place you intend to fly, you should get familier with starting the engine at home and possibly save yourself some frustration. Be sure to follow the break-in procedure before your first attempt to fly. After some time you may think the Mark II underpowered and want better performance. That can be addressed later. Be sure to get the balance point correct before you fly. follow directions as to line length as well. You do not want to be turning circles too fast! the picture below shows the line you have been provided with and is only 26 feet doubled. Fine for some half A planes but I think you will want more for this plane. Don't worry about the filler for a first time plane. It will not help the plane perform better. Robert
