RE: Magnum XLS 52 - A 'Hunk of Junk'?
We race this engine and the stable mate ASP .52 in our SPAD DasPlasSticks, running club 40 2 pylon, and have great luck. The motors are cheap, reliable and very powerful and fast. For everyday sport flying, the Master Airscrew 11x7.5 is king, and for racing, the APC 10x8 is the preferred set up. Hot plugs are a must, and we run 15% nitro, 20% oil fuels, with the Sig Champion 1/2 Castor 1/2 klotz being the best performing. The bearings are junk, so We swap out the bearings for the Boca $11.99 ones, and have even bought new sleeve and pistons from hobbyking. After break in on a stand at a crackling 2/4 stroke for a tank, running it a WOT rich 2 stoke for 4 tanks before putting it in a plane is a must on a 10x7 or 10x8. Once in the plane, get your high needle set, then set the low end, using the pinch test and that works on 97% of the engines we have dealt with, only had to mess with the needles on a couple. Out runs the OS 55 on the same prop, but will only see 8-9 minutes of run time on a 8 ounce tank. The .55 OS will get a lot better mileage at around 12+ minutes. The Magnum/ASP seem tuned for higher RPM and the .52will slightly pull away from a OS 55, so races are usually won in the turns. A side note for installing the Boca Bearings..your engine will now not spit fuel all over the engine any more. The factory set up spews fuel all over the darn place, and your motor will be soaked from the front bearing. With it sealed up, the engine is a real dynamo. So if you dont want yours, feel free to send it to me..we'll make sure it gets a good home in a plastic racer!!

RE: KINGTECH X JETCAT X JETCENTRAL X WREN
People say to look out for the lifetime warranty..Hmm Wish I had one on my P70 that Bob has had since the 11th of July!! Mine had 1hr 23 mins of run time, when it had a catostophic fail 4 mins into its last flight. Bob says it oversped...yet it sounded like ball bearing from the front end bouncing around inside, and allowed the compressor to hit the case. The Shok jet that it was in has inlets in the fuse side, and no ram air effect, so how it oversped is a new one on me. I bought it new on RCU from an online retailer as NIB..well according to Bob, the warranty from Germany only covers 1 yr from the original sale to the dealer I got it from. I basically bought new old stock is what Bob said. I am being told I am looking at an $800 bill. So, I just sold my P60, and when the P70 gets back, I will probably put it up for sale too. I think the K80F is a superior product. Runs on diesel, on roughly half the oil %..lifetime warranty, USA service support. I am willing to bet I would have had my engine back, a phone call, or even an email in over a month had I sent a Kingtech in for service...Jet Cat..not so much as a peep in over 6 weeks!!! Now thats Awesome service!!

RE: P70 catastophic fail?
Mike, I don't believe that the Online shop I bought from is an authorized dealer...I was new to Turbines..and didn't realize that little tid bit, so thats on me. Mine also was a Split S manuever and was full speed. Talking to Bob, I get the feeling they dont know why it happened either. But I will have a 1yr warranty when it comes back!

RE: P70 catastophic fail?
K1, we have a bulk fuels dealership that sells about every kind of fuel except Jet A. K1 is heavy refined heating fuel that has had most of the sulfur removed, "odorless" Kerosene. K2 is basically dyed, untaxed Diesel. K1 is what Jet cat calls for, along with Jet A. Jet A is a real PIA to try and get though, post 911, unless you have a buddy who owns an airplane.

RE: P70 catastophic fail?
Well, if it was used, it's the best rouse I have ever seen. The solinoids, pump, fuel tubing everything was new in package, bag etc. Taking the Rossi plug out, it was brand new except for the pulling out of the coils. The tail cone had what looked like 2 thumb/finger prints on it, and looking at the intake pulling it out, there were no signs of it running at all. attached are pics I took prior to the maiden flight

RE: P70 catastophic fail?
Talked to Bob today, He said that the engine was first sold in Sept 2005, and that it wasn't covered any longer, even though I told him who I purchased it from. The guy I bought it from does business on here and the Pay Pal was to (so and so) hobbies. It was listed as NIB, which it was, and it had zero run time on it when I hooked it up the first time, and all accesories were new, never seen fuel. The ECU, Bob confirmed was indeed at Jetcat in Nov 2011 for the upgrade to Version 6.0, complete with A123 battery ( I wont name names or actual business) I then purchased the Kero Plug start upgrade and installed that. I did shoot the guy an email, and let him know what happened, and that I was having to send it in to Jet Cat, I never did get a reply Back and that was on the 5th of July. Bob did say he would look through parts they have that are reconditioned, and try and cut the $800 tab down a little. He also did say he puts a 1 yr warranty on their work. I am just a little gun shy as to whether or not I want to sell it when it gets back, and buy a King tech K80 or Super Bee II to replace it. As they do offer lifetime guarantee ,and all this would have been covered. Live and learn I guess. Without starting a whole flame posting, I honestly don't get how Jetcats are the "choice of champions". How do they get by not having a lifetime warranty when Jet Central, Jets Munt, King Tech all do? I guess it was a rookie move on my part, I listened to what the other jet guys told me (all 4 of them) and they all rave about Jet cats. I also picked up a cermark F16 with a P60 a while back, so once I have the whole jet routine down pat, and nerves of steel built up, I hope lightning doesnt strike twice. It has 2.5 hours on it, so at least it got a little further so far.

RE: P70 catastophic fail?
Bob said that mine had not been under warranty for years, because of the serial Number. This was NIB, but no longer under warranty, even though the warranty states purchased from JC or one of its retailers. I would think Jet Cat would take a look and see about making this some what right. Come on, it only has 1 hr and 23 mins on it for pete sake. And if these truly do have an over speed problem, then make it right. Don't get me wrong, I am not looking for a hand out, but I do think they should stand by the product, even if it was clearly a year or so down the road, as long as it was new, and the ECU clearly shows that. I would not care about paying for bearings and consumables, but JC ought to at least cover the major parts and fix the underlying problem. Here is an example..Many of the new Turbines out there like JCentral and KingT** all have lifetime warranty, and would have covered this....no questions asked. On a side note: Hell Even Toyota just covered my Neighbors, Son's 1983 Toyota Pick up's exhaust manifold!! Why, because Toyota had a recall on the thing, way back in the mid 80's, knowing it was bad, and had a tendency to crack. They covered it all this time later. Now that's standing behind your product and making it right!! The customer in this case just paid for consumables like gaskets. I ask this: what prevents JC in this case from selling a product with known issues and hope that the warranty is up by the time the model is built, so the 1st flights if something goes wrong, is no longer covered. That seems like betting in the houses favor if you ask me. I know I am a newbie to the Jet scene, but this is the high end of the hobby, I guess I expect a little better than Hobby King treatment.

P70 catastophic fail?
I bought a NIB P70 from a Online Hobby shop here on RCU, never run, Version 6 ECU, kero start, with FOD screen. I intalled it in my shock jet, and got my turbine waiver. On my 9th flight, with 1hr 23 mins on the engine, I was at full throttle having just throttled back up from a split S 4-5 seconds earlier, and it made a wierd noise kind of like a diesel engine fuel pump shutting off, and shut down. So I glide in uneventfully, and noticed after landing, I couldn't get it to run the cool down sequence. I pulled the wing, and the engine was siezed and turned 45 degrees in the mount. After cooling down, I took the motor out, and you could see where the blades had made contact with the case, and you could hear the BB in the pop can sound inside. I send it in to Jet cat, and I am being told that it was from an Over speed. Oh and by the way it's going to cost $800 to fix, and no it's not under warranty. Fuel was 5 gallons K1 with 1 qt of BP 2980. Up till then, the motor was flawless. How does it over speed? I dont even get anything in the way of ram air, as my intakes are in the side of the fuselage, mostly concealed by the fuel tank. My trainer/mentor had one that oversped too, and he had to send his in to Bob. Is there a fatal flaw in the P70?

RE: 1st annual Idaho Falls SPAD RACE Pics
Thanks Ratshooter. You bet it's fun! We are growing ours basically by building 2 or 3 planes and letting folks try it out. We use them to practice formation takeoffs and landings as well as general formation flying. The DasPlasStick is a perfect platform, easy build, very sporty to fly with rates cranked up, yet lands at a walking pace. The .52 make a great match. It will almost climb indefinately straight up off of take off, and we routinely radar gun them at 88mph using Master Airscrew 11x7.5 props, McCoy Rc59 plugs and 15% fuel. We do allow for the fuselages to be fliped as you see in the photo's, other than that pretty much stock. So build a spare plane, and let folks fly it, or get 3-4 guys and you all build and fly in formations etc and it will catch on. With the .52 running well under $100, the entire plane is cheep to build and fly, and more and more folks will like the idea. Builds as easy as an ARF, yet will be around long after an ARF is dead and buried. Another way we got folks to get on board is to get a bunch of materials, and envite them over for a build day at your house.

RE: Taylorcraft crash
I have had a Sig Kadet sr ARF wing blow up in flight, Sig replaced the kit because I was able to shoot a pic showing no glue on the main spar and shear webs. I had a Hanger9 Cap 232G where the rudder servo tray separated in flight and the aircraft was lost because the rudder went hard over and stuck, Horizon didn't replace the kit, and I lost a great 50cc engine too. So, you take your chances I guess, or you can go back to building from kits and plans, which makes you a model builder, not an arf assembler. We suffer to much from the gotta have its, and are not willing to pay the price to truely build an aircraft. So really, you have yourselves, as do I for the above mishaps because we bought arfs. I have gone back to building my own planes. Yep, it takes a little longer, but in the end you wind up with a better product. GET OFF THE COUCH, AND GO BUILD! Thats the mentality I had to take with myself, and you can do it too. I can crank out a kit like a 4star in about 2 weeks start to finish..is that really that much longer...really. Freaking be honest..lazy sucks! With the new kit cutters like LDS, Precision cut kits, Manzano, you cant beat the quality, and the kits go together without glue, and the fit and finish is awesome

RE: Goldberg Chipmunk ?
Having a CG chipmunk with a Rossi .60 and a pitts muffler, built with the bell cranked ailerons... It flies awesome!! I have a Pulse 125 with a DLE20 and with a 15x8 it radar guns at 82MPH and is a much bigger air frame. I think it would become a balistic missle and very nose heavy if you were to put it on a Chippy. The .82 should fly okay, and a .91 should be a real performer if you want verticle.

RE: 2012 SPAD Pylon racing schedule
Yeah, we have seen those, and they are pretty cool! I have one modified with a straight non tapered wing and an OS .32. But we have been using the venerable DPS becuase some folks have a tough time getting 2mm coro, and dislike ordering over the phone I guess. Plus the plane serves tripple duty as a dog fighter, fun fly's/ foul weather, and pylon racer. Some of our pilots are older and have a tough time with smaller planes, and we wanted something with a little speed to it. So DPS with a .52 swinging a 11x7.5 at 14K moves out around 80mph, yet still lands like a big trainer....which a few still need I think..lol Right now, between the 3 clubs, spanning 300 miles, we have 30+ SPAD racers now, and that is growing. I have heard from a couple guys in Ontario, Oregon who wish to jump in, and they too are looking at putting in a race next year! I hope to get folks down in the Salt Lake area going too, as it's only a 5 hour drive from here, as well as Tri-cities (Kenniwick, Pasco, Richland) in Washington. Your more than welcome to come join in!!

2012 SPAD Pylon racing schedule
As some of you may know, we at the Boise Area Remote Kontrol Society have been racing Simple Plastic Airplane Designs (SPADS) in AMA recognized 2 pylon, club type fashion. It has caught on, and we have climbed from 5 racers the first year, to 3 Idaho clubs, and approaching 25 pilots now. We are kicking off our 3rd season, and have events this year in Boise, again in Twin Falls, and for the first time, Idaho Falls. So why SPADS? They are cheap, quick to build, and extremely durable!! The fuselages are PVC downspout, and the wings/tail are 2 and 4mm sign material. The Spars are two .89 cent ACE yard sticks! That's it, all there is to it. The control surfaces are gapless too! The plans are free at www.spadtothebone.com ,and we run the DPS or Das Plas Stick as you see in the picture attached. They are very easy to fly, and landings slow right down, yet with a .52 ASP or Magnum, we have seen 80 MPH on a radar gun. The .52 ASP runs $62 with free shipping from Hobbypartz.com!! Perfect plane for those fun fly's, and they are all weather, and can be flown in rain, sleet etc (although a transmitter mitt is a good idea) The race dates are: The Twin Falls pylon race event will be May 12th. Starts about 10am. Entry fee of $10 will also buy all the food we have to offer. We will also have a couple of other events such as an egg drop event after the racing. Any member of another club is welcome to attend our race and fun day events. AMA required. Planes must be a SPAD DPS as described in the BARKS rules from last year with one exception. We will allow the plane to be modified to a tail dragger. Pylons are 450 feet apart. Point of contact is Olen Forman, club president, email ol4man@q.com. The Idaho Falls race is on for 21 July. Same rules as Boise. They have a 96db limit, so we need to be mind full. I believe tail draggers are allowed as well, provided no significant speed over stock. The .50-.55 size engine OS and ASP/Magnums with sock muffler, and 11x7.5 prop typically meets the db level. Point of contact is jim Williams, email: jimwrc@msn.com Boise: On for Sept 8th, gates open at 8:30am, race starts at 10am I have attached this year’s BARKS rules, please let me know if you have any questions. Please note we have made a couple changes from previous, mostly in regards to wheels and engines/prop. This is to keep everyone pretty closely matched outside of pilot skill. Also our sister clubs look at us as a guide line, so it is also intended to make it simple for all of us with respect to their club limitations such as noise. We don't want to have to make changes in order for you to fly at any one of the 3 events. I am the point of contact for Boise, and you can contact me with any questions. Email: bw5493@yahoo.com So build a SPAD this weekend since the weather is lousy, and come join us in the fun, you won’t be sorry!! Hope to see you at one of the races, if not, build a SPAD anyway…..you’ll be hooked.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit
Bob, He did fly it stock, but said he had a bad habit of overshooting our 460x40' paved runway. I never saw it fly myself. Our field here is at 3180' above sea level, and I could see it having a higher stall speed on a hot day. He said with the spoilers, he had more control and was able to keep spooled up a little higher on final. As you see, If I don't like them, it's an easy fix to trim them back off. I know the Curare pattern ship back in the day used them in the downlines to keep from building speed, and you could use them on final to slow the ballistic speed down.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit
Here are a couple shots of the wing with the Curare style flaps. It's light ply glued on top of the flap so that it overhangs the training edge about 1/2 inch or so, and when you deploy full flap, it rises like a speedbrake/spoiler about 1/2 to 3/8 inch. I think it will work to add drag to the plane, and the guy I got it from said they made a huge difference.

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit
I have joined the R54 fan club. An older gent here in Boise, decided to make me one heck of a deal on his hanger rashed, kit built R54. I am in the process of stripping it down to make a few repairs, and clean it up. I bought a Cermark F16 with a P60 that only has 2.35 hours on it, and bought the plans for the turbinator, when Rudy offerred me his R54. Already ordered replacement gear legs, Brake and the P60 adapter from Bruce, So give me a few weeks, and we'll have another new R54 owner applying for his waiver. I am curious with this one, as he has made the flaps on it ala Curare pattern ship, with Spoilers attached to the top edge of the flaps. So when flaps come down, the top 3/8 inch rises like spoiler. Any thoughts?

RE: BOLD PREDICTION: Zenoah will eventually follow FUJI IMVAC down the crapper
You know, I'd stack My G62 and G23 against anything I have in my hanger, XYZ 50HP, ZDZ 50NG, RCG26, DLE 30 and 2 DLE 20's. I would bet I have spent less time tinkering and fiddling with the Zenoahs. I run all mine on 32:1 Klotz BeNol Castor and they run great. Never a bearing, re-ring or anything fail. I think from a price point, DLE's go onto my cheap beater practice planes. The Zenoahs go on the contest birds. Why is that you ask? Simple, Zenoah has proven itself for me. DLE and the others have not. I also think it's how you maintain your gear. I have no idea why anyone would want to run 50:1 Amsoil saber or it's equivalent. Why? For a couple RPM...pass. I have 30 yr old Rossi's that still run great on Castor. My weed wackers and all 2 stokes all run the same 90+ octane mixed 32:1, that way I don't worry about having fuel for my planes or not. It all comes from the same source, and they all run great.

RE: Some in FAA will probably use this....
$200 on Ebay..hmm It had to have been a foam jet. You can't even get the landing gear and brakes for a turbine anything for $200. You can't even buy the wood kit for a Turbinator for that. Then at best he may only have 8-10 minutes of fuel in a real turbine. So where was he going to put the C-4 in a F-86? Not to mention the GPS and onboard FPV type equipment. Okay, worst case scenario: If he was able to shoe horn it all in..he would have needed the dry lake bed at Edwards to get it off the ground.
