RE: Radio Equip. Needs Question
You could also check into the Turnigy T-9x from Hobbyking. It is a 9ch tx, with an 8 ch rx, for about $60.00. It is also sold by Hobbypartz as the Fly Sky 9x. It's a very nice, full range 2.4 ghz radio, full functions, 8 model memories, and all the mixes and expo, dual rates you would ever want at a great low price. I haves well over 100 flights, and haven't experienced a problem yet. Extra rx's cost about 8 bucks for the 6 channel, 12 for the 8 channel. The extra money you save could go for servos. Don't get suckered into the old line "it's name brand, it must be good" or, "I get good service because I bought it from xyz hobby company". (If it was so good, why the need for service?). I use lipo batteries in my tx,and charge about once per month. I use lipo in my plane for rx, I get about 5 or 6 flights from them, and recharge just to be safe. I don't use nimh. or nicad for anything, they don't hold charge for long, take forever to charge, and are lighter than the others. I use Hobbyking 5v,5a ubec's in my nitro-powered airplanes, and have had no problems. Good flying, and good luck....

RE: How to handle the guys with flawed plans?
Oh, but I am so torn when I think about this thread. I am in my second year of the wonderful world of r/c aircraft flight. I, as many others built the "stick and paper" free-flight kits when I was younger, flew a little control line, but never could afford r/c till now. It seems competition in the manufacturing industry has lowered the prices of most everything needed to fly. Some people would say my 9ch tx, and the rx's that bind are unworthy in some fashion or form, yet I have had no problems of any kind with my equipment.I have noticed some of the name brand equipment has problems. Money does not equate to safety. I learned to fly with a Slo-Stik, 3 channel airplane. Inexpensive?yes. Invaluable? ABSOLUTELY!!! I learned 3 channel flight, and did't go broke doing it. Then, I took the same aircraft, and added ailerons. I learned even more. I now own 10 otheraircraft, both elecric, and nitro. I am a member of the AMA. I am not currently a club member, but thinking very much about joining after flying by invitation at a local club field. I would not have been invited were I not able to prove myself competent at the public field I fly at. But we, at the public field don't look down on the guys that belong to clubs, even though they have a place to fly within a few miles. We accept all Pilots, new and seasoned. We help as much as we can. We mourn the loss of every aircraft, regardless of the method of flight. We are self-regulating, checking out the newcomers, inquiring about AMA membership, and pointing out the signs that show even the public field requires it.I have had many mentors, alot of study, and sim time, and hope all enjoy the hobby as much as I do!! Happy Landings!!!

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
Rob2160, you've been caught not using the "proper equipment"!! LOL!!! Now all I need to do is wait till spring, do some range checks on video, post a couple of vids showing that HK equipment is just as good as "proper equipment". Nah, I'm just going to fly high, fast, and enjoy the hobby. That will be the best thing I can do. And whenever I hear a noob asking where to purchase equipment, you know what I will say. Hobby King!!!

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
Thank you for the welcome,Maritza! Well, I must say, we all have our opinions, and they are just that. Opinions, I've been taught, are neither right, nor wrong, just someone's belief based on either thought, or experience. Now down to facts. I will repeat myself so that you will understand what I am basing my OPINION on. My experience has shown me that if I had said I would use a futaba radio in a jet, nobody would have a problem with that. I said in my earlier post that I own a Futaba 6ex. So I guess, Maritza you might say that I have used "proper equipment". I trained using my friends Hitec radio. My Turnigy has an excellent "high quality" feel to it. The gimbals are smooth and tight. The programming is easy, and has all the mixes I need to fly any aircraft. It also can be programmed for Helis. The range checks I have done show me that the system is good for AT LEAST 1.500 METERS. I have NEVER experienced a loss of control. That cannot be claimed by *pektrum. It is NOT a cheap little toy store radio. Have you ever used one? Sounds like you haven't. In 5years, or maybe 10, maybe you guys will accept it. These are made (figuratively) just up the road a little way from where yours are. If you want to find out, spend the price, and test one. You might be surprised.

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
Why not? Is it any different than any other plane? It uses Throttle, Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder, Flaps, Gear. And maybe a few other channels, I can make use of 9 channels. Range test, line of sight is at least 1-1/2 km. If I can afford to trust it with my slow-stick, J-3 cub, Cessna 182, Lingcat,Profile Edge,Exceed Concept, Mini-uproar, (Alll electrics, and one nitro trainer, why not a jet? I have had no problems whatsoever with my Turnigy, and I expect it will serve me well for quite a while to come.

RE: Hobbyking no customer service?
To date, I've only had one problem with HobbyKing. Iordered a wattmeter from them and it was DOA. I requested an RMA ticket, and told them I wanted to ship it to the USA Warehouse, and would like store credit. When Iprinted off the RMA, it had the Washington Address on it, and about 1-1/2 weeks later, I checked my account and I had a credit for the puchase price. I don't know about you guys, but that is good customer service to me. I figure it like this, there are 7 billion people on this planet, and a lot of them are r/c addicts. If they try hard and are able to satisfy most of us, most of the time, they are doing pretty good. Nobody is perfect, especially me...

RE: HobbyKing - Good or Bad
I would have to say HobbyKing has been a great source for just about anything I have wanted as a noob. I originally wanted to start flying back in the 1980's, but the prices the LHS, and mailorder were charging kept me grounded. I would look at the name-brand equipment, and dream. Fast-forward to last spring, a friend invited me to a swap meet, and I bought a used slostik, and a used futaba 6ex. Then when I asked my friend is there more, he showed me HobbyKing. all that I wanted, I have. I now have a Turnigy 9x radio, several rx's from different vendors, and have not had a single problem with it!!! I flew last summer, and fall, and this winter with it, and it has been FLAWLESS. (Michigan weather isn't so nice in the winter). My batteries and all electronics have performed at least as good as any other high-dollar, "name-brand" equipment out there. No "brownouts". No un-binding of rx's. NO PROBLEMS!!! I did have a wattmeter arrive doa, I was able to get a return authorization ticket, sent it to their Washington warehouse, and got store credit. Good service, I'd say. If the "name brand" companies or LHS are feeling a pinch, they will have to do what it takes to compete. And yes, I would trust my radio and equipment, properly set up, in any model.

RE: Help pick a radio
Hey guver! I checked out the smartieparts board, and it's so simple, even I bought one!!! Very little soldering required!! juast take out some screws, set the board in your radio, and voila! put the screws back in and it's finished! 16 model memories, unlimited mixing, and you can set up the switches the way you want them! And the total came to $52.00! sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: what is the best RC transmiter out there?
If your wallet is fat, and you don't mind spending alot cash on a radio setup, go ahead with one of those Futabas, JR, Spektrum, Airtronics or some other high dollar, "name brand" radio. If you want the most bang for your buck, check out www.hobbyking.com, and look up Turnigy's TGY9x. I got mine for $53.00+shipping. I have over 100 flights on it, and not one single problem yet. Plus you can get 6 channel rxs' for it for about $8.00. I have several in different airplanes, and they all work great! If you want to expand the transmitters model memory, and programming options, you can purchase a "Smartieparts" board and add it . This allows you to change the firmware at will. Firmware is available on the internet, since it is all "Open Architecture". Mixes are unlimited. Switches are user assignable. model memory increases from 8 to 16. What a wonderful radio!!! (And it didn't break my bank, or cause a divorce because I took out a mortgage to buy it)!!! Blue Skies, Calm Winds, and Soft Landings...

RE: Transmitter question
If you go t o www.hobbyking.com, on the right side of the page go to the "usa warehouse", then use the product searchbar on the left side of the page, click batteries, the you will get a drop down that gives the options for different batteries. if you measure your battery bay in your tx, you will be able to find a battery that fits. The mah capacity of the pack won't matter, as long as it is equal to, or greater than your original pack. I have an 11.1v , 2200mah pack in my futaba 6ex, and it works great!! I only had to charge it once last season! Blue Skies, Calm Winds, Soft Landings to You...

RE: Wanting to get started.
The radio setup I listed in my earlier post is a Turnigy 9x. It is a computer radio and is capable of doing anything any of the high dollar radios can do, and extra receivers cost any where from 6 to 8 bucks for use in other airplanes. The initial cost is $53.00 + shipping at hobbyking .com. or you can get thre identical radio at hobbypartz.com, but it's called a Flysky there for 89.00+shipping. It will probably be sufficient for a long time, and you can invest the money you save in other things, such as more airplanes! You don't have to buy the most expensive things in this hobby to Have fun!

RE: the best beginer plane for aroud $100
Check out a lot of suppliers, DON'T believe the ones that show a jet, or a low-wing airplane, and call it a trainer! High-Wing airplanes, while a little low on the "cool-looking-factor" are the best to learn on. A GWS Slo-Stik is probably the cheapest airplane to start with, easy to build, easy to fly. Hobbyking sells a good 6channel radio forabout 33.00 from their usa warehouse, hobbypartz sells the same radio for 32 or 33 bucks. these 2 suppliers have matched brushless setups that won't break the bank. Hope this helps. Blueskies, calm winds, and soft landings....

RE: Help Me 'Rig' My New ARF Trainer!
Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on the subject of which radio to use. I do have a futaba T6XA 72mhz, and it works great, for what it is. (I got it at a swap meet for $30.00). I also have a Turnigy TGY9x that I purchased from Hobbyking for 53.00. 2.4 ghz, 8model memory, heli, acro, or glider. It did take a couple of minutes to figure out the programming, but I think most of thr RCer's on here could do it. I have used both radios for more than 100 flights, and have yet to have any problems out of either. Hoever, I notice a lot of disussions on here about other radios having problems with un-binding,or brownouts. I have not had one single incident to date. Also, I am considering, but haven't yet decided on whether to purchase the add-on board for thr Turnigy. It costs $45.00, and after "flashing" a different program into the radio, I get 16 model-memories, and unlimited programming mixes, custom switch and knob assignments and a backlight for the display. (The more I talk about it, the more I think I'm gonna get one). I flew one plane at the local field with my futaba, and after landing one of our "experienced" guys said it looked like the old radio was a good one. Later, I flew a different plane with the Turnigy. He said"you actually trust an airplane to that?" I said yes, and went about charging a few batteries. I also swapped recievers, and quickly programmed the one in the plane that had the futaba in it. I took it back out and flew it with the Turnigy. When I came back in, I kept the radio at my side. He said I guess that futaba is a good radio! When I showed him what I had done, his jaw hit the ground, and he never said another word.

RE: Wanting to get started.
I see alot of replies that put forth the idea of using the large, slow nitro trainers, joining a club, and so on. not bad suggestions. That said, there is another way to get started. I , personally, had a friend guide me to a local swap meet where I bought my first radio, and airplane, and some inexpensive accessories. I got a used futaba 6 ch transmitter/rcvr set for $30.00, and a GWS Slo-Stik airplane for $25.00. A $10.00 lipo, $10.00 charger for the lipo, and I had all I needed to start flying. He helped me get into the air, and build a little confidence, without spending a lot of cash on something I might not have been able to do otherwise. Now, I look all over the internet, using e-bay, hobbypartz, hobbyking just to name a few. This hobby is about having fun, not spending money. I have no need to purchase high dollar, big name equipment to have fun. I bought a 9ch, 8 model-memory radio from an internet supplier for $53.00! extra recvrs cost about $8.00. That is a lot better than buying a radio that needs recvrs that cost more than my original set. Electric set ups can do anything nitro can,and require less clean-up, my airplanes don't get all gooey and sticky. Start with something inexpensive, and have fun!!!

RE: Cambridge scientist debunks flying myth
Wow!!! You guys sure did beat up this subject!! I'm not sure I qualify to be on here with you fellows, But here is a submission from a regular, ordinary, non-engineer, non collegiate, un-educated hillbilly. Lift is a result of an airfoil moving through the air. Different airfoils produce lift in different ways. Asymetrical airfoils produce lift only due to Mr. Bernoulli's principle, in which the motion of the wing through the air produces lift due to the difference in time it takes the air that was split apart at the LE to re-combine at the TE. The faster the wing moves, the greater the deflection of air molecules, the longer it takes the air to regain it's normal state. Symetrical airfoils create lift due to the same principle, but only if there is a positive angle of attack. Asymetrical airfoils lend themselves well to low speed, high load aircraft, due to the high amount of lift generated by the greater difference in pressures produced by their profiles. It's the law. Symetrical airfoils lend themselves well to high speed, low load aircraft, due to the lower drag coefficient of these wings. Now for Props, and "Rotating Wings". Propellers are closer to asymetrical airfoils toward the center of the prop, thus, the highest force is generated here. They are more symetrical toward the tips, thus, the least amount of force is generated here. There are two reasons for these differences. First, leverage. The further from center a force is applied, the greater leverage is applied. So, create the most force closest to the center. An aymetrical airfoil is indicated here. Second, Time. The distance the tips of a prop must travel is greater than the distance at the hub. Relative to the air, the tips of a prop must travel faster than the hub to cover the same distance. A symetrical airfoil is indicated here. So, most props use both airfoils. Rotating wings are of the same configuration, but to a lesser extent. Due to their high rate of speed, coupled with the fact that they use varying aoa dictates that their airfoil be mostly symetrical. No matter the aircraft, there will always be drag, vortices, lift and pressure(both positive, and negative). May your skies be blue, and your landings be soft...Thank you for the education!

RE: SkyAngel F86 crash....help?
If it were me, I would start with the esc. I can't afford to do the right thing and spend a ton of hard earned cash on the expensive castle creations,or spektrum, or futaba equipment,so in order to fly, I am forced into buying "the cheap stuff". I use a Turnigy 9x transmitter and rx, or depending on the plane, a 6ch rx from either hobbypartz,or hobbyking. esc's I purchase from e-bay, or hobbyking whenon sale. never had a problem with any of my electronics. Try not to drain your batteries below 3.6v. check the programming on the esc.

RE: Help pick a radio
From what I understand you can also purchase a module for the turnigy 9x that is jr/ spektrum or futabba compatable. it might take a little research to do this, but I'm sure it can be done. Am I anti spektrum or jr or futaba? no. I am against high priced radios keeping people out of the hobby. Also, on another note I have read about people having problems with spektrum radios and un-binding, brownouts, and other problems. One guy at our flying field stated the he "wouldn't trust a 3,000.00 airplane to my Turnigy radio". To me, 3,000.00 is no different to 79.95 in a plane. I have experienced zero problems with my Turnigy radio. If I have trust problems with my radio, I'd better ground my little fleet, and wait till I get a radio I can trust. I have absolute trust in my Turnigy, and when I fill up my model memory, I will buy another and keep on flying. Gentle Breezes, and Soft Landings to all that fly, no matter what radio you use!!!!

RE: Should I buy from Banana Hobby?
You might want to check out a GWS Slo-Stik for a first airplane. Costs about $30.00 for just the plane. Then check out a 6 ch radio on hobbyking.com and a small outrunner and speed controller, and a couple of cheap servos. This is a high-wing trainer, flys real slow, the Dihedral on the wing will help you to recover from mistakes until you get better at flying. this is an inexpensive way to get started. Not a lot of "wow-factor" for this plane, but it flys very nice for a beginner. Then move on to more expensive stuff... Blue Skies, Low winds, and soft landings....

I have said it before, all the "High-Dollar, Name-Brand, only sold at a dealer" equipment kept me on Free Flight, or Control Line planes. I just couldn't seem to justify tying up a lot of money in one Tx-Rx set. Then one day, The Greatewst Pilot of all looked down, and said " Let there be internet, and direct shopping on it, and let it include R/C planes, radios, and all other things! At last!!! The clouds parted, the winds slowed down to just a whisper of a breeze. I was free at last!!! The first radio I purchased was a Turnigy 9X, and some extra rx's. I read the pdf manual, and figured out how to program it. it does everything I have asked of it so far. I don't think I will ever need to buy that 14mz, or is it 18z? it doesn't matter, Now I can use the money saved to buy more planes!!!

Hi, there!! I purchased a Futaba 6exa at a swap meet with rx for $30.00 at the very beginning of the season, and was all set to order another rx for it , when I found the Hobbyking website. I was finally in r/c heaven!! The reason I say this is because price kept me out of this hobby for way too long. I ordered a Turnigy 9x, and a couple of extra rx. I still didn't spend anywhere near the money I would have trying to get a "name-brand" radio. now I have 8 model memory, expo, lots of different mixing possibilities I might not have gotten with one of the others. I still use the Futaba a little, but, I found out about Corona rx's for around $18.00 work just as good as any of the others. Thanx to Hobbyking, and other places like theirs, I can fly!!! And I don't have to take out a mortgage, or grow cobwebs waiting to save enough to get what I want!!!

RE: Radio suggestion
I was kept out of the r/c airplane hobby by high-priced radios such as the ones you have seen here. Then came the internet, and direct from china purchasing became available! The clouds parted, and the wind ceased to blow on me! I purchased from HobbyKing a Turnigy 9x, 9 channel tx, with 8 channel rx, as a set for $53.00!!!!! I have had no problems to date with 50+ flights! All of the r/c radios are made over-seas. I can purchase 6ch rx for about $8.00! Yes, I have to pay shipping, and wait for it get here, but now I can get what I want without having to save months for it. Let's see, $53.00+shipping for 9ch ,2.4ghz setup, or $250.00+for "brand name". No contest for me....

RE: R/C planes and paint ball
I voted aginst paintballing, I am an AMA member. I am a member because it provides me with liability insurance, and gives me an organization that provides support for flying sites, and contact with others that are involved in this hobby. If anyone wants to use any type of guns on a model airplane, they should be allowed to, providing they carry at least $100 million dollars in liability insurance. That is what I will sue for if I go to my local AMA flying field and get hit by any projectiles coming from an airplane, or , an airplane disabled by projectiles from either ground fire, or airborne guns carried by another airplane, or, by an airplane that is out of control, because it was engaged in combat with another airplane. Scale models are just that. MODELS!!! How many of you out there hate when somebody calls it your "TOY Airplane"? These are not toys, and they are already dangerous enough. Some person is going to be severely injured (loose sight in an eye and tell me it's not severe) and then local, state, or federal law will at the very least incumber our fine hobby, if not outright outlaw it.

RE: Should Hitec replace planes from lock outs
So very sorry for your loss, I never care to see a crash, for any reason. I will say I am a newbie to the RCportion of the air modelling hobby. I will also say that I have been an electronics technician/repairman for the last 35 years. I have seen a lot of failures in a lot of equipment. cold solder joints on pc boards can give the impression that all is ok, yet breakdown in a short, or, sometimes long period of time. EMP interference is always going to be a problem. The "High dollar radio setups" kept me out of the RC aspect of building and flying aircraft for a long time. Nowadays, with the Hobbyking, Turnigy, Orange type of pricing I can enjoy this part of the hobby as well. I own a well used Futatba FM tx, but I use Corona rx's with it. I WON"T pay the price for futaba rx's. I also own a new Turnigy 9x radio, and am pleased as punch with it. I have had no crashes due to radio failures, only my own. I think with the money made from the Hitec, Futaba, etc names, they should not only be able to pay for your plane, they should do so in the intrest of good customer service, which may be to their best intrest. "Just because it costs more, doesn't make it better". Better customer service makes it better!! I was told by an Old-timer, "If you ain't ready to crash, You ain't ready to fly" as he walked back to his truck with a monokote bag full of busted balsa...[8D]
