RE: Larger Revolver
the only time i personally have had issues with ca hinges was due to a lack of ca. the hinge pulled out of the slot because not enough ca had wicked down the hinge and saturated the surounding wood. i have never had a "brittle" issue with ca hinges nor have i personally heard of such, but i have been out of the loop on alot of things in my life so why not this also. my experience has been that as i wick ca into the slot with the hinge it accepts so much ca and then i run the risk of the ca speading out attaching the moving surface to the stable surface making the movment stiff. which i then have to try and cut apart without damaging the hinge itself and then sometimes the monocote gets gluded together etc., etc. we all have been there. sometines i hope just for good luck. happy flying, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
for me the question is what are you actually gluing the hinge to. i understand an all balsa wing and that the hinges are glued to balsa trailing edge but i must admit i don't really know the structure of these foam wings. i wonder if there is a reaction to the foam. for me i generally go over arf's with ca glue and this includes ca hinges when used. i did not do this with this plane because most ca glue and foam don't mix. i did reinforce the wing servo boxes with epoxy because of the reports on this thread about the boxes becoming unattached. i am using the stock ca hinges with this plane and my fingers are crossed. so far so good for me. i am aware of the reported failures of these hinges thou many like me have gotten good service. you never know , capt

RE: Larger Revolver
possibly another way to look at this is to consider the fact that a plane needs lift to stay in the air. the byproduct of a wing making lift is drag. if we discuss these weights in terms of pecenteges a plane that is 10 to 15 % heavier will have 10 to 15 % more drag possiby. also as air passes by the other foils drag increase exponetially so at some point you have to increase power exponetially. this all means that there is a point of deminishing returns with the just add a bigger engine theory. if you are an engineer there are formulas that might explain all this or we can look at real world usage and come to some pretty good conclusions. the fun part of this particular thread is that we all have been reporting honest real life usages. this is how i chose how i set up my plane. i am amased by this plane and i certainly have noticed that it flys well with a rather broad posibility of setups. what is best? the setup you choose and are happy with. capt

RE: Larger Revolver
my stats are just with my plane os 91 fx swinging a14x8 apc. the bottom line for me is the ready to fly weight i fly at of 9 lbs.. adding a half a pound or more over that is not for me. slow flight, stunts, wear and tear on the frame all benifit with less weight imo. but i am a firm believer that one of the fun parts of this hobby is chosing what you like best. happy flying ,capt

RE: Larger Revolver
ORIGINAL: mach2
ORIGINAL: mike early I doubt the DLE has the power of a YS 140. 4 strokes sound 10x better than weedeaters. Gasoline stinks. But it is the wave of the future.
everyones opinions are different. For small motors, i think 4 strokes sound better. On the other hand, i think that big gassers sound awesome. Some of them are the closest thing to sounding like the real thing. Which also has a lot to do with the sound of a large prop swinging up front. In my opinion, I prefer the sound of even the 20cc (weed eater as some call them) to any glow engine. They just have a strong bark to them which makes everyone know of the punch they pack. It seems to me,  that with glow motors, the two strokes dont have have much grunt down low and dont have much power until they get revved up. And the 4 stroke glows seem like they run outta pull on the top end. Where as the gassers have a solid power curve. They pull hard all the way through the rpm range. But again, to each their own..... And on the other subject, the one and only down side in my opinion is the smell of gas vapors. Stinky! And enough will make you nauseous and give you a headache..... Jeremy
however, i alwas like to remind the readers that if one's top consideration are speed and or weight the only conclusion is 2 cycle glow. 9lbs. even at 108mph. happy flying, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
i was out flying today. took my revolver 70, os91fx 2s, 9lbs. even and my aw yac 54, saito 150 4s, 10lbs 7oz. 15% wildcat 4s lube but i throw in a couble ozs. of caster per gallon for grins. blue skys, 81 degrees, wind out of the west at 10 to 14 mph. land owner had mowed this morning and the ajaisant farm fields are freshly tilled. what can i say, it was dreamy. i got 6 flights with each plane with two to three landings pur flight. our club flield is a rectangle of about 600' x 400' so you never have to deal with cross-winds. i run duel transmitters so while i fly one bird the other can charge as needed this way i can fly nonstop for as long as i want. both these planes are a hoot in a breeze. both planes were trouble free today, i am a lucky man - " living the dream" (well at least for today). these two planes complament each other well. the rev is slipperier and the best at swoop and loop where as the yac is a better dancer. love them both! mach, aw has a 20% off sale going this week for the "nall" but don't tell the wife i told you. my wife never asks about what i spend on my planes or boats cause i never ask about her shoes or horses. happy flying, capt

my $0.02, the saito is a great match. the price thing? it is like used cars. that price is well below all new componats however the wear and tear are unknowns. i like to kick-em in the shins with my first bid, but that's just me. i love the art of the deal. my experience at swop meets and auctions is that 10 to 20 cents on the dollar will get you a garage, basement, attic, family room......... full of planes. but not alwas that special one you got to have. have fun with it, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
i coached 28 soccer teams. k-8 kids. entry level league. boys also girls. the goal of this league beyond just having fun was to bring all the kids along equally. not just the naturally tallented. we were blessed with great instuctors for the coaches at many coaching clinics. teach all the kids the skills. one lesson wassay you have a clutsey kid that does most of the skills poorly-find one thing they did right and make a big deal how well they did that one thing, go overboard with praise, they will practice harder so as to get more praise. repete, repete. for many years i flew at a private field not a club. just me and two long time buds. we alwas supported each other and complamented each other. one bud has world class skills the other a begginer and the chatter was alwas positive. i then joined two clubs one in the toledo area the other in n. wis. nice people but reserved in there interaction with other menbers. this was different then what i was used to. so i started clapping when another would finish a flight and say nice job. at first they were somewhat starteled but they smiled. i would pick one or two things they had done and and mention that i really enjoyed watching such. it has caught on. lots more positive reenforcment chatter from many. the club in town has been good with an increase in positive at-a-boys and up north the club has gone crazy with positive support for each other. cheering, clapping etc. both clubs are alot of fun for me. in no way am i claiming it was all me by any streach of the word but i think positive actions breed more positive actions. happy flying , capt

RE: Larger Revolver
on the servo question i believe it is generally stated that if you are running a gas engine in any plane matal gears are a must due to extra vibration levels (and so i have read). with my revolver i am runnimg a os91fx two stroke and choose the (new at the time) hitec 635 karbonite gears. the claim was that they have improved centering and that the karbonite gears have shown way reduced wear over nylon or metal. the torque numbers were plenty for this size bird on paper. so i rolled the dice and with over 300 flights on the revolver i can report that they have been GREAT so far. the fly as tight as day one. i am very pleased so far. i would recomend them to all. just my two cents, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
mach, this revolver IS a well designed stunt plane. yes every plane has strong points, it is all give and take at some level. i read some guy refer to this plane as a sunday ovel flyer and then refer to his own plane as a top level stunter and he simply has limited knowledge. it is simple, he doesn't understand that it is the pilot not the plane. andrew jesky and his bud orin would fly their sig rascal 110's with os 160's out at the local airport and put most "high end" planes to shame. if you woud like to watch some skilled tickling of the rc sticks go to www.severnbridgemfc.com. and watch all thier vidios. these guy are way beyond average. flying in parking garages, grain silos, train tunnels, the woods, gyms, hand launching 100 cc planes, landing without runways. i have read comments that these guys are dangerous, i think they are great.but noone can say that they don't have skills. happy flying, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
after busting out firewalls and landing gear on a number of arf's and then repairing them i came to notice that my repairs (using epoxyand tri-stock) were stonger than the oringinal build and seemed to last much better. so i started to reenforce my arf's before the broke and have seemed to achieve stonger planes for my effert. i now epoxy reenforce all my arf's now. one word of caution, these are planes and dead weight sucks. you can over do it. try and think like an engineer not a mason. happy flying, capt

RE: Introducing the new 90-1.20 Yak QB
i fly this plane with the 5645 servos also. the centering issue was discussed earlier in this thread. it was pointed out that this is a PROGRAMABLE servo. the servo comes at a setting of 2 on the band width (i think it is) and if you change it to 1 it tightens up the centering. i did this and have no complaints as to the centering. i borrowed a programer from a club bud so it was free. i fly two other planes with the 5645 at the 1 setting, i like them. i have never flown them at the 2 setting. the 5645 is strong, relieable, and i saw them for $39 at the show this past week. if you can get a programer the change is simple and quick. and you could save alot of money. all the other guys that did this seamed satisfied as well. i think the 7985s would be overkill but that seems to be popular in rc these days. just my $0.02, capt

RE: Larger Revolver
happy easter, when comparing say an os95ax and a dle20 it is fair to say that purchase cost, maintainence, tuning, shaking, sound, smell, that really all of these considerations are a wash. both are fine ,great, good to go. however, the weight of these engines and the cost of the fuel are the differences that are not tha same. that's all. the fuel to gas cost ratio is 5 to 1 and the weight ratio installed is 3 to 2, this IS a big difference on both issues. so, it comes down to weight vs cost. this all reminds me women. in order to have the one that weighs less it will cost you alot more cash and more clean up time. having said all this it is well proven on this thread that both options are great and get the job done. happy flying , capt

RE: Larger Revolver
the gas option is great and is well stated as such in this thread. the glow option is also great in this size plane. with the glow the pluses are the weight savings. my plane is now flying at 8lbs 15ozs with an os91fx. the gas bird are almost at 10lbs i believe. this is a 10% difference and that is big in my book. i prefer the lighter is better approach. also, what about smell? both on the fingers and when the plane flys by. this is very important. i like the smell of glow, takes me back to my u-control days as a little boy. i can't get that from gas. hey, do what you want it's all good. capt p.s. did i mention that the glows are faster! also very important. not!
