RE: Enya R120 Blowby?
I am thinking glow fuel with ignition also. Since there is a spark for ignition...it seems like 5-10 Nitro is enough. Should idle good too with spark ignition and be more fuel efficient. Capt,n

RE: Custom Piston Rings
My friend has 2 Webra 1.20 engines. From brand new one would hand start. The other engine needed to be started with a electric starter. I replaced the stock ring with a Ring from Frank Bowman...and it hand started first try. It had much more compression and ran great. Best rings on the planet for our RC engines. Capt,n

Ernie, that is the stock gear that come,s from AW. Nothing special....the foam wheels are more for a electric airplane. I may put a set of J3 Cub wheels on....had a set once and loved them. Very forgiving on bumpy fields....and more easy on L Gears ! Also they allowed the airplane I had them on too take off more easy on thick grass. Capt,n

RE: 50cc Gas Engine Rebuild
After you land your airplane and the Idle is high....thats the time to adjust your trim Idle speed on TX also. A lot of RC people have a radio(TX) that has at least 2 different Idle speeds and you can use the lowest one on landing. It sounds like you need to experiment a little on getting things right with the Idle. Do not worry if the engine sounds rich on idle if the engine is cold. If your engine is not broke- in...that should all get better too when it gets broke-in. Capt,n

I am considering buying a Enya 1.20 R and convert it to gas. Maybe run 20-1 redline in gas. Is this a good idea or should I stay away from the Enya 1.20 and get a brand that is still in production. Thank,s

RE: 50cc Gas Engine Rebuild
Having a rich mixture on the Low mix or Hi mixture does not make a engine run hot. Too lean a mixture will make engine hot...also not enough airflow over cooling fins and the wrong spark timimg will make a engine run hot. Time to start reading a lot more about this and talk with a person at a flying field who knows about engines. Goood Luck.....Capt,n PS Make sure you have the right oil in the gas at correct ratio.

RE: smallest Gas engines
ORIGINAL: dirtybird You wouldn't need points. You could place a small coil next to the same small magnet used for current CDI systems. The charge generated by the magnet passing the coil would trigger a FET that would take the place of the points. With this you could run it on three volts. A hall effect trigger needs 3.7 volts.
Please post a photo of this system you tell about. Thanks, Capt,n

RE: Slow transition on DLE20
ORIGINAL: acdii No hesitation, just slow to throttle up. Its on its second gallon of gas finally and probably just needs a retune, it was also much cooler weather when I ran it last, and was tuned in the upper 80's lower 90's. As long as I dont have to mess with the timing, this will be easy fix.
Slow to throttle up means the engine is too rich on the low speed mixture. It should run smoother on low RPM,s if you lean it out a tad. The Hi-speed mixture is more important not to have it lean. At higher RPM,s and the engine working...that is when too lean is a bad thing. If you can lean out the Idle mixture until it has a bad hesitation, then adjust to where the hesitation is just about gone. Good Luck Capt,n

With the J'Tech profile style muffler the engine really came alive, and is now almost as strong as the Mintor 22cc, but the Mintor is by far a Superior engine in all aspect's
I sure like my Mintor 22...got to go flying more...do less yard and house repair!

RE: 50cc Gas Engine Rebuild
ORIGINAL: karolh You heard right as trying to hone the cylinder would most likely make it worst than it already is. All you need to do is to use some 400 grade emery with some oil and by lightly hand rubbing in a circular motion remove the glazing from the cylinder which helps the new rings to bed in. Wash and dry properly and then oil lightly before fitting the new piston and rings. Karol
Some types of emery & sandpaper can embed particles in cyl wall. Be sure too use a hand wire brush and soap & hot water to remove any grit. Then re oil right away.

RE: Ignition Module failure
All above makes good sense. Another question I have asked and never got a answer is....I have 2 or 3 RCEXL ignitions. From brand new I noticed only one had a real crisp blue spark with same sparkplug...all tested with same battery and pickup sensor. Why is the spark better on some RCEXL units than others? Could it be a sign of how long they may last???? Just curious. Capt,n

RE: DLE Long term reliability ?
ORIGINAL: Truckracer
ORIGINAL: Kelly Models I've had several DLE engines. A few 55's and a 111 in my 35% Carden Cap. Both have had connecting rod bearing failure. The latest was in the 111. It's been running on Red Line oil 40:1 for two years and was running strong with a 27B Vess prop. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem. I'm hesitant to rebuild it if it's only going to fail again. Valley View RC has told me my engine is one of the early versions and some parts have been changed.
I can't speak for other people's engines but my (3) DLE engines are so far as reliable as any engines I have owned. They may fail tomorrow and I certainly can't predict that! The DLE-55 compared to my DA-50, with about the same amount of run time, my DA had been sent in once and they replaced the crank and bearings. So far my DLE 55 runs great and shows no signs of wear, fatigue or failure of any kind. Add to that it runs better than my DA ever did and frankly, I really enjoyed that DA until I got the DLE which has more power and smoother running characteristics throughout the whole throttle range. Now as far as rebuild costs .... even if the DLE was crap, it is cheap to rebuild. If a guy gets just two strong seasons out of the engine and rebuilds it just because he thinks it needs it, it is still a cheaper powerplant to own and operate than the high priced engines. I'll keep mine until proven otherwise.
You have a very good point about less expeniveparts.

RE: Slow transition on DLE20
ORIGINAL: ahicks Agreed, low speed too rich. If it's been a while, you might even want to just start over again to make sure of where you're at, high and low? Time to keep something else in mind too, with the big air temp swings you see often this time of year (50 one day, 80 the next?) you can plan on your engine's mixture requirements changing enough to be very noticeable. Set for 80 degrees, will be lean for 50! Set for 50, fat for 80! -Al
This is where a easy way to control how much cooling air gets too cyl head area may help. Maybe a damper you could adjust the incoming air...with a on-board sensor to send temps tp your TX screen, you could figure out ideal damper openings for more ideal temps. In the meantime, let the engine warm up real good before take-off !

RE: Throttle Spring vs Servo Current
ORIGINAL: nonstoprc The potential problem/danger is WHEN the connection breaks away from the engine throttle arm. Without the spring, it will not automatically return to idle/kill position.
I agree and the spring keeps the viabration from wearing throttle parts. I would like to see some real evidence of how many servos go bad. I am sure not many at all. Capt,n

RE: New DLE 35
ORIGINAL: TimBle Sorry chaps but the leaning out of a pumped petrol engine carburettor "once it unloads" is hogwash. This is glow engine thinking and it does NOT apply to a petrol engine. Rich running engines are not more reliable than a slighly lean engine. It may run a few degrees cooler. If there petrol, air and spark it will fire....simple as that. Lastly how in heck is gaining altitude in flight it going to change the mixture significantly? Air is a lot less dense than water so it does not change barometric pressure significantly every 10m altitude gained. tuning these things is so simple. allow for 30sec to warm up and open up to WOT and set the high speed needle for peak rpm. Then ease back on the throttle till its starts to pop and miss (4 stroke) and lean the LOW sped needle till it goes away, then ease back on the throotle again till the next 4 stroking point is reached and lean the LSN again till it stops. repeat till you get to idle. Check for transition through the rev range and anywhere it feels lean, richen back up a little, or if it still 4stroke, lean further. Work you way back up to WOT and then again ease back on the thottle. If no 4 stroking occurs then its good to go but its likely it will still have a spot somewhere in the rev range where it will briefly 4 stroke. forget your glow engine thinking with petrol engines.
Here is yet another way to tune a engine after break-in. Warm the engine up a bit and adjust the HI-speed untill you get max RPM and then richen it to just starting to drop RPM(about 50 RPM or so). Set the idle mix so the engine does not stumble on a quick opening of the throttle. Fly your airplane a bit and if it sounds good make a couple of hi-speed passes and kill the engine in flight and glide it too a landing. Most airplanes will land easy with engine dead if you set up your landing approach right. The idea is to stop the engine in flight and land for that important sparkplug check too see if the Hi-speed mix is set correct. The sparkplug should be a tan color. If white or the mix is too lean. If real dark ...the mix is too rich. Give it a try...you got too know if you can land that bird on a dead stick anyway.
ORIGINAL: Azzir325 Voicing my feelings IS doing something about it.
No you are not doing anything. You are merely whining to people who already know this. I can give you a much longer laundry list of things that SHOULD be changed... e.g. Connectors should be standardized. Manufacturers should NOT use proprietary communication protocols. Epoxies or high strength glues should always be used on planes. Factories should ALWAYS provide parts for Vendors - ( sound familiar? ) etc. etc. etc. The list is quite long and well known by anyone who is involved in RC. Posting a RANT here is useless. What do you suppose will change by doing so? Not the tiniest thing will change!
