RE: Club FOX!
Had a good time late yesterday just before dark with my 4-star 40 and Fox 45. Plenty of power and no problems. Soon Fall will end, weather turn cold, and I'll grab my big snoopy mug full of coffee or hot chocolate and let the balsa dust fly in my shop. [:D] Balsa dust in coffee adds character. [:)]

RE: associated mini mgt 3.0 truck issues and tech support problems
Finally getting back to this. Thanks for the feedback. So if clutch shoes are melted, is that the only way of knowing its time to replace them? Do you know when to replace the friction or slipper rings? The housing that holds the slipper rings have small pins that keep the ring in place. The surface of the ring is just above the pins about .010" to 015". Obviously, if the ring surface gets down to the pins, the pins will start to wear down so the housing would have to be replaced too. Seems to me there should still be some life left in the rings but maybe not because I don't know how thin is too thin. I tried tightening up the slipper screw but it didn't help. On the 3rd attempt to tighten the slipper, something might have broke. Its tricky to tighten and get a feel for it if you're a newbie. The instructions talk about winding up the spring then turning the screw. During the 3rd attempt, it felt like the spring broke because it wouldn't wind up anymore. After I took it all apart, I didn't see what spring it could have been that was making it wind up. I didn't see anything broken so that's strange. I was expecting to find a a torsion type spring or clock type spring but there wasn't any so I'm left scratching my head over what could have broke. I studied the exploded views in the manual but didn't see anything that could make the slipper wind up. Any ideas?

associated mini mgt 3.0 truck issues and tech support problems
Hi Folks, I'm new to RC trucks and bought a new Associated MGT 3.0 for my son last Christmas. We haven't ran it much at all (only 1/2 gal of fuel) so its not hardly broken in yet. We've had issues with it since day 1 and its been an aggravating money pit to keep it fixed and my son is gentle with it at the local park just driving it in the grass or parking lot. Can't say he drives it too hard or is abusive because I'm there supervising. My latest issue to make me more aggravated is the lack of support from Associated. [:@] I chose them because I know the name as been around a long time and thought they might be a good place to start so I got him this RTR beginners type truck. I've been trying to get their tech department to answer a few basic questions so I can figure out what it needs and they won't do it. All I get out of them is "send it in." With it torn down on my bench, I don't want to send in a box of parts and expense of sending it in when its out of warranty. At this point, I feel it was a huge waste of my money. Since they won't help, I hoping some experienced users here can. Again, I'm green when it comes to RC cars. Here's the latest thing its doing. After it drives a few minutes, it will just stop and act like either the clutch shoes or friction disks are slipping. We give it the throttle but it just sits. After we stop it and it cools off, we'll try it again and it'll be ok for a few minutes then do it again. Its like something gets hot and starts slipping. My question to Associated was how do a you know if the clutch shoes are bad or the friction discs are worn out? They shouldn't be no more than we've driven it. I asked for specs that I could measure with my calipers but can't get crap out of them. In other words, what's the minimum thickness of the friction rings to know when its time to replace (unless they start rubbing the pins in the slipper hub and I hear it or see metal). Any ideas unless I just start throwing more money at it by throwing parts at it until its fixed. Maybe I should just throw the piece of junk away and cut my losses. [&o][&o][&o] I have some other issues with the car, but let's tackle this one first. I'll post the next thing later. Thanks!

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
Another thing I see with only ARF's is that most people just throw them away when they crash (assuming its not a pile of toothpicks) when they could be repaired in an afternoon and for less $$. Replacement arf parts are expensive. The problem is these folks have never ever built a model before so they have no clue how to repair and reapply covering. A few weeks ago, I crashed my 4 star due to interference. Wing had minor damage (which is surprising the way it tumbled) but fuse was broken in half, firewall ripped out, and other structural damage from the nose to half way back. Other guys at the field that day, strictly arf owners (never built), told me to throw it away or order a new fuse. Instead, I rebuilt it in a couple of evenings after work and had it right back out and it only cost me a roll of Monokote and a little glue. I had a bag of scrap balsa and ply (I don't throw any scrap away) to handle the rebuild. All you see now is the seam between the original covering and the new covering. [:D] I never looked to see what a new fuse would cost, but I'm positive its more than what I spent to fix it. My Fox engine needed another muffler and needle valve from where it nosed into the hard ground and tumbled several feet, but was ok other than that. The way it crashed reminded me of the wipeout in the old 6 Million Dollar Man opening.[:)]

RE: LETS SAVE SIG BEFORE THEY GET SWALLOWED BY THE BIG TWO!!!
I love Sig. Some of the best planes I ever had were Sig. I was in the hobby as a teen from about 1978 to 1988 then got out from lack of time. Now, I've been back in for about 3.5 years. One of my first planes was a Sig Kadet with the aileron option. Later, I had a Kavalier (what a smooooooth plane) and a Kougar. When I got out, I sold everything. Since getting back in, I've bought several Sig kits to build and some are vintage. Those are Kougar, Kadet (original from 70's), Piper Cub, Liberty Sport, Aerobipe, and 4-Star 40. Sweet, fun to build and fly planes. People with only arfs don't know what they're missing. Oh well, each to their own. To address the earlier post about kit prices, yes, they are going up due to simple supply and demand (unlike gas and oil prices [:@]). With short runs and set up charges, kit makers have to raise prices because not nearly enough build anymore. [&o]What shame, but then again I'm old school and getting old.[8|] Speaking of kit prices, finishing supplies have shot up too for the same reason. Look at cost of covering materials, wheels, hinges, and everything else it takes to finish a plane.

RE: What glow engine would you choose
Most of my planes are in the .40 size range and the work horse engines of my .40 fleet are my two Fox 45's that I move from one plane to another. I like them because they are reliable and don't give me problems. Also, they are rugged as they survived a few hard crashes with minor damage to the engine such as needing a new muffler and needle valve (got bent). Other than that, clean the dirt out and its back in the air. Another favorite is the K&B 61 Twister. Light and strong. I have others, but those are at the top of my list. Enya's are really good too. Shame we don't see more of them.

RE: how to remove engine stain please????????
I just discovered this a couple of days ago when I wanted to clean up my old Fox 45. I happened to have some Mean Green cleaner/degreaser in the garage and thought I would try it. That stuffs works great to wipe off old castor oil. I just rubbed some on with a paper towl, let stand about 3-5 minutes and wiped off the old castor with my fingernail and small wire brush. It didn't harm my engine or cause discoloration. I didn't want to spend time trying to make it look 100% new again - just clean the outer surfaces and a little between the fins. Works good enough for me and its cheap. You can get it at stores like Family Dollar and Dollar General. Also, works great cleaning soot stains off glass window on a wood burning fireplace insert. I know its summer, but just saying.

RE: Club FOX!
Fox has been rather weak in the marketing department in recent years. They have a nice website but terribly underutilized. They could do so much more to make it better for customers by providing better pictures and information. Any way, here's the differences. * 40 Sport is a basic lapped iron piston engine with bronze bushing and its a schnuerle ported. * 40 Standard is the same as Sport, except it is ball bearing * 40 Delux is like the Standard, except its ABC. I have no idea why they call it a non-descriptive name like delux. Sounds like something you'd call a cheeseburger - just say ABC so people know what it is. Anyway, the 40 has been around a long time and is a good little engine. I have one in an old Sig Kadet and another in a CL Nobler. They are still into developing glow, but its at a snails pace since they don't have the resources and its not their main business. They recently came out with a new 60 CL, a ceramic 35, a much improved carb for their larger glow engines, and a gas version of their 50. They were working on a ceramic 46 and 25 but I don't know their status. They also have a very nice line of large gas engines but its hard to compete price wise with the Chinese imports.

RE: Club FOX!
Sounds familiar. As you probably know, Fox tried designing their engines for no or very low nitro back in the early 80's (if I remember) with the idea that they're doing modelers a favor to help save money with rising cost of glow fuel. But, it didn't catch on that well because people still used nitro that was a bit too much because it was what the imports were designed for or they thought they had to use. Also, most people used what ever fuel the local hobby shop carried. When there was a problem due to wrong fuel (no castor or too much nitro), Fox got the blame. Its risky to design a engine to use a fuel that's outside of what everybody typically uses because people refuse to read and follow instructions so its the manufacturer's fault.

RE: Club FOX!
They have to make new parts in order to offer that 50 gas engine version. However, at $275 (sale price), I'd have to do a lot of flying with it just to hit pay back over the cost of nitro. I wonder how many of the 50 gas versions they've sold. Anybody on here ever try one? It's a bit rich for my budget.

RE: Club FOX!
FYI. I just noticed that MECOA put their trade-in link back up on their website. I know this is Fox, but about half my engines are K&B and the other half Fox. I like'em both. I have a OS 40 that I bought used for my son's trainer and it (the engine) has had it. One day the plug threads got stripped and some metal got into the engine and chewed it up. [8|]It lasted my son a couple of years and ran good until that day. Now, I'm thinking about trading it in on a Fox 60. That engine is like a little money burning a hole in my pocket and it'll be good for 50% off a Fox. [:D]

I wonder if Fox does anything with their trade-in's. I don't see where they have ever gone thru them and resold them like Mecoa did. Maybe they get some scrap metal value out of them. I noticed that Mecoa dropped the trade-in offer from their website so I guess they just don't want to fool with that stuff anymore. Seems like a waste of effort to me if you're the seller, but I guess what ever it takes to sell a new engine.

RE: Club FOX!
I don't know how the 45 compares with the 46 imports on power. I've never compared them. I have two 45's and they are my workhorse engines of my 40 size fleet. After break in, they are very reliable and easy to start. After using them for 3 years, I still haven't had a dead stick and they are very tuff. I put one in the ground at full speed (nose first) and thought it was toast. All it did was break off a small piece of my exhaust stack and break the muffler. A little JB Weld and a new muffler and I was back in the air (after cleaning out the dirt). Noise wise, the stock muffler is louder than most other mufflers but hasn't caused a problem at our urban field in Dayton. An engine that is more powerful than the 45 and probably at least as powerful as any import is the Fox 46 ABC. I think its the same physical size as the 45. That sucker is a stump puller. Its a shame Fox quit making it because they are trying to get away from chroming operations. When I was at the big Toledo show, I stopped by the Fox booth and that's what I was told. To me, seems like they could just contract out the chrome plating like everybody else. You can check Ebay and other such sites to find a 46 ABC. I see them from time to time. Regarding the K&B 61 twister, I have two and they seem quite lite and I'm very satisfied with them. If the specs on the K&B/Mecoa website don't give the weight, I can weigh mine for you. Power seems very good but I don't have any comparison numbers. The K&B/Mecoa site has (or used to have) a forum for their engines so it might help to check them out.

Thanks Earl. OPS was the 3 letter company I couldn't remember. I have some old 80's RCM magazines where Fox put out some large page adds and one of them had a chart showing how their new Eagle compared to those imports at a lower price based on their own testing. It was sort of funny how their matrix had some blanks as if maybe some results didn't turn out in their favor so they just didn't publish it. Who knows. I'm signing off for the night. I'm about to fall asleep.

RE: Club FOX!
I'm not sure why they came out with the Eagle series, but I have an old Sig catalog with the nice full color Fox section and it shows the 60 twin, hawk, old Duke 60, and Eagle. I think they said or infer that the Eagle was the start of a more powerful line of 60's, but basically said that the hawk was still powerful, debugged, and a good value compared to the more expensive eagles. I think Fox wanted a new generation to go more head to head with the Rossi's, Webra's, and forget that other imported high performance engine at the time. I think its name had only 3 letters in it but I'm drawing a blank. It sucks getting older. [&o]

I got one better than that. I have a Birdie 10 (Globals down sized old school Bridi Dirty Birdie) with a Fox 15 BBRC and converted to tail dragger. That little SOB is quick and aerodynamically clean. It flies straight as a laser like old school pattern. Other guys thought I had a 25 packed in the nose and were surprised it was only a 15. Here's the best part. One guy (I swear) walked up and thought it was electric until he got close enough to see it wasn't He was impressed with how quite it was and how well it idled. Very reliable little engine. I'm thinking about getting another for something else because I have an old torn up OS 40 I can use for trade in. But, maybe I'll use it to get an Eagle 60. That old engine is like a dollar burning a hole in my pocket. I feel like using it to do a little Fox shopping. [:D]

Great job! Looks fantastic! Good choice for engine. I'm sure it flies better than my original foamy because yours is lite balsa construction instead of foam that gets heavy real fast with paint. I suppose I could have tried covering mine with low heat covering but I'm not a wizard with the iron and there's a lot of contours on the original fuselage. I might dust mine off and go fly it again this year. Ahh they memories!

I wouldn't need much. If you have thin 1/32" or 1/64" red oak that's about 12" by 20" or enough edging I could apply in strips. I'd have to calculate how much edging if I knew what width you have. I'd be glad to pay for what you have and shipping. Thanks! Gary

finding veneer
Hi scale fans, Anybody know where I can find small rolls or sheets of thin veneer without that iron-on glue or pressure adhesive? Seems like everybody has that iron-on stuff which won't work for me since I can't get an iron in my cockpit and I don't trust that iron-on glue to be permanent. Last time I messed with veneer, it was in the 80's and bare veneer edging was easy to find since I don't think anyone thought of making it with that iron-on glue. I can find bare veneer on google but everybody sells it in rolls of 250 ft or more or big 4'x8' sheets and I don't need much at all. Thanks, Gary

Glad you said that. Good point. I've seen this happen at our field and even had one hover his fairly large plane directly over the pit area so close you could touch it with a broom. No respect for others or safety. That was the last straw and he was told to leave immediately. He gave some lip so we got the park ranger to come over and escort his azz out.

RE: Why Is 3D Hated?
I'd say most people don't hate it, but there's probably some people who can't do it and get jealous at those who can. For me, my opinion is this. I can't do it myself, don't have the right planes, and don't care to learn. I fly more traditional sport planes, vintage planes, and scale (I'm old skool). I like to be wowed be a good 3D routine and I'm impressed. But here's the kicker. I get tired of seeing planes only hover all the time. That's the only thing some of the guys in our club do. They go out and hover then land. It gets visually old real quick and becomes boring to watch all the time, but I don't say anything to them and I leave them alone. Also, I get tired of seeing the same sort of ARF planes from one end of the pit area to the other where they are all Edges, Yaks, or Extras. I like to see some different stuff once in a while. It just visually gets old to see the same thing all the time, don't confuse that with hate. I'd like more variety to keep it interesting. We had a guy show up late last year with a giant Aeromaster with smoke and put on one heck of a show (and yes he did some hovering) that I enjoyed and I don't have skills anywhere near his.

Thanks Earl! That's what I have - the newer one. Well, that's probably a good thing because Fox supposedly had it "debugged" in later versions according to what Fox said in an old color catalog I have. I wanted a new Fox Hawk but couldn't find a good deal on one until this turned up and I couldn't refuse. It just looks funny where you have so many finishes coming together on the same product. Dull gray, red, black, shiny carb, shiny back plate, and shiny muffler. I think Fox probably had some old inventory of back plates to use up. If they wanted to match sort of how OS looked at the time, they really should have gone all dull finish or not at all. Then again, Fox wasn't much for marketing or industrial design. They only focused on mechanical aspects. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy with it and more so knowing its a newer version. [:D] And you bet I'm going to fly it! [:D]
