RE: Kit Building Cool Tools
i use just a plain razor saw but a friend of mine built this project for fun(wind mill) using a [link=http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42307]HF Cutoff saw[/link]. it looks like a miter saw but really small. here soon someone is going to post the 300 dollar micro table saw and all i have to say to that is its rubbish, not because i think its junk its not but spending 300 on a micro ts is not worth the money. at that point get a real table saw and a razor saw.

RE: maple or spruce?
the way i can tell maple apart is what i refer to as ray flecks they are small(minuscule) compared to oak. on the face grain one of the adjacent faces will have a little showing of the ray flecks. they are straight and run with the grain. as a hobby i woodwork and only have access to oak maple walnut pine and poplar for that hobby. I haven't ran into any that would use maple for spar material, not saying there isn't just none that I have seen. for the planes I have built i was fine with spruce or basswood for a spar. carbon fiber is nice but too expensive for the airplanes i would build since i build mostly sport airplanes.

RE: storing a rc plane in a gargage
ORIGINAL: ChuckW Home Depot has some really long shelf brackets. I've used a few of those covered with pipe insulation and it works great. You can also make all sorts of cool stuff with PVC pipe.
i did the same thing with those shelf brackets, bought the type that slide into brackets you mount onto the wall then bought pipe insulation to protect the airplanes from hanger rash. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_lx43m1cSBdU/SVKetYtQJmI/AAAAAAAAADo/RdxfgEeAPeg/s1600/P1010077.JPG

will there still be a linux binary for those of us who bought the windows copy to use on linux? I run the current version on linux with great success.

Bax do send word we appreciate the kit being reissued back up the chain! i was so happy to have gotten one of these kits and hope to build it soon. I saw one of these fly a few years ago and I wanted one ever since.

RE: Using wood other than balsa
I would shy away from doing end grain to end grain joints as someone suggested. if you wish to lengthen a piece use a scarf joint it widens the gluing area for the bond to adhere to. you might look for WW1 designs to see how they would have been built since most of those were built from wood. the fokker D8 had a wing skinned in bending ply a foam wing covered in thin plywood could be another option for you. it did have a tubular steel frame for the fuselage. you could do alot of that with spruce or other such wood. where an end grain butts against a long grain i would add gussets of thin ply for strength. neat reading http://www.auf.asn.au/scratchbuilder/beams.html http://www.sportair.org/articles/1Aircraft%20Wood%20-%20Part%20One.html this site has some neat pictures of a wooden airplane going together http://www.mywoodenairplane.com/Wing/20090915.aspx ps you might look into the pink foam from the hardware store i have seen some people make ribs from it before.

RE: Simple bending brake?
I used to play with building stuff from brass for different things and a good way to bend stuff without a purpose built break is to take two aluminum or steel flat bar stock and place the material you want to bend in between them and clamp those to a work surface and bend with a third piece on the overhang you wish to bend clamped to the work piece. aluminum would be about the best because the extruded bar stock has nice square corners and the steel may not for a more accurate edge. i am probably not explaining that well either. ps found this on harbor freights site http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39103

RE: advice: which mini table saw to buy?
i agree with the band saw comment they are better for resawing than a table saw. now for an idea of what can be done with a table saw with proper setup http://lumberjocks.com/projects/17991 those white keys are strips of maple cut into strips about blade thickness and set into walnut. now i will get onto my arf repair ;)

RE: advice: which mini table saw to buy?
i frankly dont think spending 300 or 400 on the micro table saws is worth it. friend of mine bought one of these http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42307 not great for ripping stock. here is something small for ripping http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93211 but i would offer that you get a real table saw because with a zero clearance insert they can be nice for cutting and ripping small stock by using a 7 1/2 inch 40 tooth circular saw which has a really small kerf. i use one for ripping stock.

i only referred to the slash in particular you would have to find a manual that stated that the stock esc has a lipo cut off. my guess is it doesnt because it comes with two nimh packs but i dont have any knowledge on the savage.

RE: 2s VS 7 cell nimh
go ahead and run a 3s lipo then post the results here [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHyadzz9sS0[/link] ;) :P the only downside to running any lipo on the slash is the stock speed controller wasnt made for lipo which means it doesnt have a voltage cut off which can damage a lipo if its drained too far. its highest voltage is 9.6 which accommodates a fully charged nimh 7 cell just fine or a 2 cell lipo. i think you can buy aftermarket voltage cutoffs but i am not sure on that. i prefer to stick with nimh because they are simple and i just bash. acouple of my airplanes use lipos and they work well aside from the one pain of balancing but thats not that big of a deal. i have a mini heli that uses lipos as well. neat batteries. ps i wonder how lipos will be affected if they get banned from air shipment. there was an article the other day where airline pilots union want them banned for a couple of in-flight fires but the circumstances behind those were not specified in the article so no telling what the real reason they caught fire from.

RE: Using covering for hinge's instead of tape
i only stated what i said on the bigger airplanes for two reasons i had never seen it done and I am an overkill builder, i tend to make it stronger than it needs to be. I am glad that there are others here who have done it I would have been curious to see how well it worked out.

RE: Retracts question for GP UltraSport Plus
i had one i had to move the gear under the fuse to get clearance for a 13x4w. I would think though that putting taller gear under the wing might make it a little more clumsy on the ground.

RE: Using covering for hinge's instead of tape
on the smaller planes i have seen it before with no ill effects but i wouldn't want to try it on above a 25 size plane. since you are talking about a 17 or so ounce plane i could see it working well for you.

I have a 46fx which appears not to be on the list either. you should read though the tuning guide. RE: Problem with a Kit I just purchased
ORIGINAL: tschuy
ORIGINAL: Bax
ORIGINAL: tschuy You can thank the wonderful people at Great Planes for taking a wonderful kit and turning it into crap.
....interesting. We've changed absolutely zero in the model. Same tooling, same wood, same instructions, same packaging. In any case, if something's not right with a kit we support, a simple phone call or an email to us will enable us to see how we can help you.
I recently did that for a Twin Star that I purchased from Tower.  The fuselage covering was very poorly done and the film used to cover it was about as bad as it gets.  I tried to correct the issue with my coverite monokote iron to no avail.  Even with me slowly walking the temperature to over 380 degree's the wrinkles in the film remained.  I called the customer service and the quick response with a replacement was sent.  Problem was the replacement was worse then the original that I recieved.  It would seem that there are some serious quality control issues with the products that are sold through Great Planes and Tower Hobbies.   What can be done to address those?
what kind of kit problem took you to respond the way you did? I bought a US 60 recently a basic kit re-manufacture after the dies sat on the shelf and I opened the box and was elated to what i saw inside the box, plan on building it this winter. the original guy who posted this thread only had a problem after not realizing the removable film that was on the canopy was that which made it look hazy, other than that seemed happy with his Goldberg purchase. this is a kit forum after all so the ARF of which you mention didnt apply here.

i plan on starting my ultrasport this winter and putting mechanical retracts in. i bought a set of 60 sized mechanical retracts from the hobby store. I have a friend i used to fly with that moved away to Pennsylvania that had the prettiest US 60 with retracts and I had always wanted one since then. you wont be disappointed with this plane. they had a sale on these last christmas and i got mine for 99 bucks.

RE: field box
i made my field box from a Stanley roll around tool box. cut a hole in the front for the power panel and the top section seperates from the bottom so you can put fuel in the bottom and under the tool tray in the top part you can put your batteries etc. then tools in the top tray and there was a tray in the bottom of the top section that swivels out that you can put misc parts ie glow plugs etc. 25 bucks for the tool box at walmart. my old one fell apart it was a smaller hobbico field box. pretty lightweight. something like this one http://www.stanleytools.com/default.asp?CATEGORY=ZAG+ROLLING+WORK&TYPE=PRODUCT&PARTNUMBER=018603R&SDesc=Stanley%26%23174%3B+2-in-1+Mobile+Work+Center
