RE: build manual needed for twin-aire 20 or sport-aire 20
I also have a Sport-Air 40 manual around here somewhere if you get into a pickle and can't get one. I could meet you at Rt. 106 hobby if needed...just let me know! -Craig

RE: Remove paint from tires?
Grab a can of acetone from your local parts store or hardware store...it will wipe it right off! Most fingernail polish removers are acetone, but about 3 times the price...I guess they know most women don't hang out where guys do! :)

RE: Hotser
You will love the Jett .50 on your Hots! I have a Hots 60 that I built last year, stock airfoil, but lightened up a bit by skeletenizing it as well as the fuselage. Mine is powered by a Jett .90L and it moves out real well for such a thick airfoil! The best part of this combo is the instantaneous throttle response that the Jett motors have...you just can't come close with any other motors that spin the same rpm's! Have fun with it!!! -Craig

RE: Mach 1 - looking for original article or infos
Will do Sonny! Pretty cool having an airplane that's a year older than me, but sad to see how many people today refuse to build and preserve these classic birds! I picked this up at a local auction 2 years ago for a measly $60.00! My biggest decision is going to be powering it. I'm all for finding the perfect "era" motor, like a Webra speed 61 for it, but I'm also torn over the possibility of using a new lightweight powerhouse motor like the O.S. .55AX... I just recently purchased a K&B .61, (still in the shrink wrap!) and I'd like to send it out to Clarance to do his magic on it, then possibly use it on either my Miniflite "Cutlass Supreme MKII" , or my Airtronics "Acrostar" bipe. It's tough being me lately![:D]

RE: Mach 1 - looking for original article or infos
Wow, that is sharp! If it were me, I would sheet the wing first, then carefully sand back the leading edge of the core 1/4" and glue on a piece of 1/4" or 3/8"balsa square stock and plane it and sand to the original core/airfoil shape. This will allow you to sand the sheeting down to a bare minimum if needed and still keep good strength in the leading edge. Good luck with the build! I have a brandy spankin' new original Mach I in the box that I'm planning on building next winter. Definitely one of the sexiest pattern ships of all time!

RE: Sig Kougar wing question
Try using a poly glue like Gorilla Glue... I used it on my last Kougar, and wish I did on all of my previous foam wings! Drizzle a small amount over the wing skins ans squeegee it out as thin as you can get it all the way to the edges. Spray the cores ever so lightly with water in an old spray bottle, lay your skin in the shuck that the wing was cut from, place the wing core on the skin, and stack everything together. I use heavy plywood pieces on top and bottom of the stack, then clamp the daylights out of it and walk away for the night. The poly glue will expand and fill in every single little nook and cranny and make a tenacious bond that will never let loose! I use 60 minute epoxy for joining the two half's together, along with a few pins in the leading and trailing edges, as well as a bunch of 2" masking tape. Here are a few pics for you...have fun!

RE: My COX is STUCK
You could also try to warm ti with a heat gun around the cylinder to loosen up the castor...That worked for me a few weeks ago with an old Enya .25. Just use a heavy glove to hold it after heating then GENTLY try to turn it over. Good luck!

RE: Gorilla glue for foam wings advice
I used Elmer's Pro Bond (?) on my recent Sig Cougar build with terrific results! After sanding my balsa skins to perfection, I thoroughly cleaned them and set them aside. Lightly clean up the cores with 400 grit sand paper and clean them well too. I placed them back into the cores and drew a few lines on the edges to make sure there aligned when I do the lay up. When you're ready to glue them up, drizzle a small amount of glue on the skins and use an old credit card to squeegee the glue into a very thin layer. (just enough to make the wood look a little moist.) I then add just a small amount to the wing core and squeegee that out as well. You're now ready to place the skin on to the core, and as stated above, I too use a spray bottle with water and give it a quick, light mist coat. Lay the skin on to the core and place everything back into the shucks. I like to use heavy plywood and 2X4's or similar, and clamp the whole mess up with my big bar clamps. I've found that within a few hours, the skins are dried up enough to sand the edges flush and do the other side. If you want, you can lay some strips of fiberglass or carbon fiber in between the skin and core...this makes them almost strong enough to stand on! Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! -Craig

RE: anyone succesful putting ultracote over ultracote?
What you just described usually works best for that application, but I would use a little more overlap...about 3/8", and be careful around the edges with your heat gun when shrinking. I often lay a paper towel that I soaked with cold water on the edge or over the seam to keep it from pulling apart. Show us some pics when you start covering! -Craig

RE: Getting married today and Its a perfect flying day. Should I just go flying
ORIGINAL: rambler53
ORIGINAL: MinnFlyer Of course you should go flying, what the hell were you thinking????
This is what bothers me, OP ask for sound advice and they NEVER listen! Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free? I hope she signed a prenup. Damn. Your flying time just took a serious hit. Sure, it's all rosy in the beginning, and then they want you to stay home with them, or go shopping, and we're not talking using Tower coupons here. You were warned, now you just have to deal with the consequences of your decision. [:o][:o][:o] An airplane never asked for 50% of my net worth down the road. Marriage is like buying a boat, the best days are the day you get one and the day you get rid of one. I've got more, just ask. I've had many airplanes and women keep me up all night, but none have made me feel like I do in the morning when I wake up next to my girl...[;)]

Bending fuel tubing
Howdy all! I stumbled across nice trick for bending fuel tubing tonight while setting up a tank for a new plane that I just built! For years, I have been bending my fuel tubes with nothing inside and had to suffer with less than "tight" radius's in my bends to not end up with kinks and cracks. Tonight I happened to look on the shed wall and saw a roll of plastic weed eater string that was ever so slightly smaller than the I.D. of my fuel tube, so I though "why not try it?" I slid the plastic string inside the tube, bent a quite sharp 90 degree bend in it, then pulled out the line with my plies, and was amazed at how perfect the bend came out...Kink free! Just thought it would be good to pass along to all of my R/C buddies! [:D]-Craig

OK guys, as I told Johnny, I'll start to post some build pics of my Sunbird 40 that I have been working on for the last month or so! I'm building it in a stock configuration and plan on powering it with an (new) old Magnum Pro .45 with a Mac's quiet pipe. I have to say that this is one of the nicest kits that I have ever had the opportunity to build, and again, would like to say a big THANK YOU to Johnny for all of his help and knowledge with the GM Precision Sunbird! RE: 1/2a Biplane
I found some free prints in this forum last winter and built a stick bipe. I put it on the back burner after finishing it, but recently installed servos and an OS .15LA that I had laying around. Should be grotesquely overpowered, but it does have a throttle. I bet it would fly fine with an .074.... -Craig
