1.2 mm vic (dont know what that is in imperial) may seem a bit thin, but provided the rest of the cable was supported and there was no bind it worked brill, the forces on the elevator are suprisingly light...... its basiclly a copy of how the f5d machines get done. ill post up some pics when i get another one made up in a few weeks

RE: uk budget class's
Hi Dave, yes i remember the thread a couple of years ago, i did the write up on the mk 1 on the ones we got hold of in the uk, there were a lot of issues with its design, not on flight preformance, it outdid my viper on the same 424 setup, spent ages going through all the problems on the fabrication side, gave them solutions for everything, then mario found the wing area was too small, they then built the new mk2 with all the mods id suggested, not even a thanks and then they ceased communication when i asked for the first one of the production line [:@] They are still around at http://www.topmodelcz.cz/index.php?&desktop_back=foto&action_back=&id_back=195&desktop=foto&action=img_detail&id=1132 This time they are only selling to trade, but i dont know of any trade dealers that have ever stocked it, ive asked for a trade account, and then ill know what price thiere selling at. im keen at getting the club q500 (424) here going properly, i dropped everything 2 years ago when i got divorsed [:D], [:D] As well as the e2k plane ill also have my own q500 out as a kit later in the year (424,428) but as you said dave the shipping costs put a spanner in the works to the states, especially as the pound and euro..... ill have a look at costs later Vicman, i got over the T tail elevator connection quite well, sorry i havent got any pic's but ive done a quick drawing, not to scale but youll get the jist..... its the same method i use on the f5d models, the tail fin is made from 3 thin sections, the centre one has a channel cut out for where the wire travels, thats then glued to one of the outer skins and the plastic tube glued in with 5 min epoxy and then sanwiched with the other outer skin, once set sand and shape as normal, i then used the elevator connection using one of the f5d fiberglass tabs glued onto the elevator(as pic) the fin is very marginally fatter than some may use, but it does aid with a larger seating area, this method was tried out on a 428 and was ok but did wag its tail down the straightaway, possiblly i had the fin too small, perhaps not in height but width, never got round to testing any further....but did work well, hope that helps cheers Darren

RE: uk budget class's
Hi oddy, yes balsa has got more expensive even here with a couple of big price rises recentlly. Balsa can be used, we use a contact glue thats safe on foam, but mainlly are wings are covered in obeshi vaneer fixed the same way, that i would expect to be expensive in mexico, as it is here and sometimes in short suppy. (any vaneer if thin enough can be used) The other option is instead of using polystyrene you can cut thw wings out of a styrene (sometimes blue) foam, not sure what you guys would have in mexico, its quire common here and gets used in the building industry, because it has a very smooth surface after being hot wire cut and is sandable, where as polystyrene is not and does not have as a smooth surface as polystyrene, you can glass fibre with glass fibre, sand and paint. A polystyrene , balsa or vaneer wing we wont use any form of a wing spar, (never seen one broke, but a syrene foam and glass i prefer to use a small hardwood spar Hope that helps, if you get stuck ill see if i can find any links for the styren foam,if all else fails you can find a fairlly stiff brown parcel wrapping paper, glue to foam and glass fibre, thats cheap and can work Regards Darren

Is this the one, sky raider on the electric and ic side we steered away from one make off the shelf as too often (dont know what its like in the states) they would go out of stock and we couldnt find 2 different airframes alike on preformance, so we opted for the set of dimentions for home build, but theres allways someone thats prepared to build for others. weve had the same peoblem with motors going out of stock looks a good class though, are there any videos availble cheers

RE: uk budget class's
Hi Victor, the black carbon one (wasp) is one ive deigned myself, i havent got any plans done up in cad or pdf yet, ill be happy to pass them one or publish once done. ``The info below is enough if you stick to the rules on sizes on the link below to create one. Again on the link below ill be doing a build thread for the wasp from start to finish, youll see then how basic they are to produce, the wasp is the only one that is built entially from 3mm light-ply, light but very strong. 23" fuselage lengh for the ic and 24.5" for the electric version, the only difference between the 2 is the electric version has a longer nose to accomadate the batteryy etc and makes it easier to achieve cofg V tails are very popular but ive found them to wag thiere tails in high winds a little. crusifix works very well, guess the old rule of " keep it simple" does work, wing section that i have used is the RG14, 15 has been used and popular, f3d airfoils dont really work as were not getting up to those kind of speeds. A lot are runing one aileron, works very well, but can be a handfull if you get caught out with low airspeed on take off and landing, as a preference i use 2 and find the nose pitching is less on a tight no1 turn compared to 1 its been designed around a set size peramerters as we have for q500. if you check out this site http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php?board=220.0 youll get a load more info about them inc the rules, this part covers the new e2k class weve just got off the ground Weve restricted the e2k planes to 4s as this kept them about the same airspeed as the ic class, (.25)and within a reasonable budget, 5s they were blistering, 6s hasent been tried but im sure it wont be long before someone tries. lol. We use to have a few electric class's many years ago and even by todays standards are very small, most too had fizzled out years ago, so hopefully weve managed to plug a gap in the market for budget electric racing, especially with the advancement in brushless and lipos I started off pylon in f5d and i think i went the long way round in time and money before i started to get somewhere, at the time there wasnt any leader electric class's, so it ment straight into a full blown fai class, and at that time there was no interest in the 424 class This budget class does allow guys to build up experiance on a course, trimming, flying the course, calling etc before commiting to a faster more expensive class, and with all the basics behind them, cost if youre prepared to build for your self is min and a few crash,s or midairs wont break the bank balance, may pee the mrs off that youre stuck out in the workshop night after night. lol speed wise, yes thiere slower than 428, q40 but as you can see from the video on a short course they dont hang around, so it keeps the die hard happy but its not a stupid speed that puts of the average club flyer as say f3d may, and its the average club flyer wholl keep a class afloat with numbers hope that opens up a little more info on them cheers

uk budget class's
Hi Guys, long time since i was on here from the other side of the pond, This is an out of interest post as to wether you guys have a mini q500 class or an equevilent in either ic or electric. weve had an ic class called club 2000 going since 2000 and has proved very popular, based on a smaller version of a q500, hand launched powered by .25 ic motors, no undercarriage, its been a very good class as a leader to other class,s weve just managed to get a new class off the ground called e2k, (very nearlly called it Q300e)basiclly the same as club 2000, airframe rules identical but electric. running on 4s 2200 lipo with a 600 class Turnigy outrunner they are matching the ic class, about the 90mph mark, We run on a smaller course than q 500 a short video below, it was done on a real cheepie hong kong camera hence no sound but gives you an iedia on speed a simularity to Q500 http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qJZfJBhyiMk we wondered what you guys had in the way of budget/smaller class's in the states cheers guys

RE: Help desgning a wing section
Thanks for your reply, perhaps I should have worded it as design or find the optimun wing section, but thanks for the usefull information youve given, ive had a look at the profili2 site and looks very good, and yes it is a pittance he asks, a nice suprice in comparison to some others, ill go through everything youve suggested and ill see what I can come up with, perhaps you guys could help out with the results i find. I promice it wasnt an attempt to be lazy and to get someone to do the work for me, im just one of those that doesnt grasps the therotical side of this very well, give me the plans and ill build anything thrown at me, or give me the sticks and ill get the plane through the eye of a needle at a 100 paces, lol again thanks for your advice, much appreciated Thanks

Help desgning a wing section
Hi Guys, is there anyone who could help me design an optimum wing aerofoil section for a small pylon class we run in the uk called club 2000, its effectivlly a scaled down version to Q500. Ive been looking through thease threads on aerodynamics, flow sections, laminer seperation, high reynolds no, etc and im afraid im a complte fish out of water in understanding all of the above, ive tried but its a bit like chucking me in the space shuttle with every warning light on red and 30 seconds to impact. I can supply all the other info, weight, speed etc..............Hopeing someone can help Many thanks Darren

Jett engine question and plug question
Hi Guys a couple of questions, ive got the dubb jett sport 40, was origianly used on a uk sport 40 model, im now going to use this for Q500ec (428 us class ) untill i get my nice new jett Q500, the problem i have is it is fitted with a stubby ali spinner, the back plate incorperates the drive hub, is it possible to get a normal drive hub so i can use one of the dome nuts. The plugs are a completly new type to me compared to the normal IC ones, ie hot cold plugs etc, I dont have a very good understanding of the plugs used for the dubb jett, ive seen some that come in 2 parts, heard that some can be re wired!!! how many different types are there and do they come in such a variation where i can alter the compression, ie bigger or smaller internal holes etc Thanks Darren uk

RE: New ARF Quickie
Hi Guys its been a while since this thread was started, the news is the new updated version of the Grand Chelem will be availible from september this year, it appears that (hopefully havent got it wrong) that topmodel are not selling direct, but can be obtained through various retailers listed on thiere web site, from the States to Australia. www.topmodelcz.cz looking at the pictures and the email I was sent from the company it looks like most of the adjustments have been made that were put forward, the coulour scheme has been changed and looks pretty nice. The company has also made availible thiere engine mount, after using a simular home made version I found it better than the Ali mount used for the preditor, allows easy exit points from the bulk head for fuel pipe and throttle cable. Not having one in front of me I cant say exactly what the alterations are, they have confirmed that they have kept to the rules as mario had pointed out that were incorrect on the old model, hopefully I can lay my hands on one in september and report back as to what its like. As for the old chelem (modified)I have has been running well and now trimmed Im pleased it runs very smoothly, now fitted with a Dubb Jett ive kept the built up wings and modified only with a fibreglass bandage on the wing joint, not raced yet but has stood up to some tough throwing around, hopefully theyll last till race day. cheers Darren uk

RE: New ARF Quickie
Hi Bud, no its completly different from the pred 2, it has got some faults which are mainly within the fabrication side, which can be rectified, and confimation from topmodel is that they will be addressing some or most of them as soon as possible. flight wise personally i find it better than the pred, ive notched up about 10 flights so far and getting on with it with well, usual tweaks set up required as all planes to suit individual taste, as mario has pointed out it could be an interesting model, guess well find out when the season starts, Darren

RE: New ARF Quickie
Hi Michael, what was your all up weight,(mine was 4lb 4oz) and how did you find the fitting of the pushrods per manual, 1 picture of my internal set up, reciever as you can see, mini servo in the tank bay and a whopping 6v reciever battery at the rear to get 70mm cg, and 26g lead needed in the tail. and one of the pushrod set up at the servo end,(z bend used to clear wing retainer area) together with a z bend at the rear exit i mananaged to get a good bind free movement, original instructions/methods were out by 40 mm and binded severly your wing servo method is the same we are using on the F5D models, definatly better, let us know how you get on with the maiden flight spoke to Topmodel and they said they will be making alterations that were put forward to them. darren

RE: New ARF Quickie
Hi Dennis, thats what ive seen in most other q500 planes, this one has a 51/2 " nose from leading edge to bulkhead, the servo tray is pre fitted and limits how far you can throw everything back. if the tank was fitted into the nose as recomended the cg was at 50/55mm so more weight would be required, with the tank full it made aprox 15mm difference to the cg. Preference for all my racers inc my sport 40 is to have the tank on the cg, cant get it on this plane, the large tank bay at present is empty other than fuel lines and a mini servo for the throttle. Weve recomended to Topmodel that the servos be fitted aft of the trailing edge as say the viper, that will give more room for moving weight around and will allow the tank to go on the cg and to shorten the nose bt at least 1". After speaking to Topmodel well complete the test flights as it is, then ill be making the above changes to it, then report back to them Darren

Hi guys, as promiced a couple of photos, Everything was chucked as far back as possible, i used a heavy 6v reciever pack , but because of the long nose the best i could get was 60mm cg, recomended is 70/80mm, the fuel tank to has been tacken back as far as possible, but not quite on the cg, when our glorious english weather (not)clears up ill get it test flown cheers Darren

RE: New ARF Quickie
Hi guys perhaps i can throw a little more light on the chelem, we have a couple here in the uk, not test flown yet but will soon. The wing section is the mh16 as youve stated, doesnt look as mean as the naca 66012. Quality spot on, as good as any artf job availible and by all accounts possibly better than the viper!!!!! The build is quick BUT it does look theres some teething problems, the distances they state for the control rods are aprox 40 mm out, and we have found that 70mm from the end to put a z bend in as this allows exit out the rear with no binding, there is a lot of lightning areas, actually too many and may cause a problem with front end strengh, the floor area to has the lightning holes which is a bit of a pain when strapping a battery down. comparison to the viper the nose is quite long, at the moment weve found that all your radio gear etc has to be thrown back as far as possible to achieve the cg. we have asked them if they can supply the motor mount shown in thiere photos, it looks good, i use the viper mount but i have had to drill through it to get the throttle connection through, the one they show allow the cable and fuel pipes through with no drilling, None of it is drastic and the kit does represent good value for money, the good news is we are in talks with the boss's at topmodels who are the desighners(company in france and built in cz) and at present are listning to our suggestions, we have some final points to discuss with them when our test flights are done. Suggestions weve put forward is to shorten the nose lengh, fit the tank on the cg and possibly fit the servos further back in the fusalauge like the viper and to leave the lightning holes out of the floor area and the at the moment large tank area bot and sides. all up weight with a stock 40 is just under the 3 1/2 lb. We've found this is the only European model commersially availible here, were putting a lot of support into this model as for us it is a good starting point, based on quality and cost, and is spot on for our 424 class, we dont want to push something if its not right, the company is listning so thats good. you guys are up against the problem we have when we order from the states, postage cost!!!!, might be worth an e mail to topmodels asking them if they have a supplier planned for the states, Daven i have the same coulour you have ordered, could you let me know how you get on with it, build and flight, again i can pass on the info the company. as for 428 youre possibly right, but once its been tested on the 40 46 motors i have a jett to go in and see if i can break it, we have asked the company to concider a beefed up version for the 428 or our sport(same) ill try and post some photos later, Hope that helps, any questions just ask cheers Darren ukQ500

RE: UK Q500 questions
Hi Jaka, thanks for the info............... Do you not run a sport (428)class We've opted for both class's, the club being on stock .46 motors 5%nitro and 10x6 props and the sport class on any .40 front induction, side exhaust, 8.75 prop, nelson, rossi, jett type motors. straight fuel as F3D What times are you guys doing in sweeden with the 10x6 props, and have you noticed any particuler brand of prop is better than another. With our sport 40 theres about 5 still racing, may be less next year and if the q 500 takes off here as we hope then the sport 40 class may dissapear completly. Have any of you guys spoken to Mario from Germany as they are getting together a set of rules to cover for the proposed Eurocup, I also bielieve there are at least 3 meetings planned In Europe next year, some of us in the UK are hoping to attend the Bellgium event, again I bielieve Mario has thease details www.q500.org Best Regards Darren

RE: UK Q500 questions
Hi guys, thanks for all your comments, no Duane we dont take it as yankee arrogance and have appreciated the long term Q500 has had in America. The uk news is that the ball has started to roll and is starting to gather momentom, with two british kit manufacturers showing a keen interest and possible sponsorship for the 424 club class Nearlly everthing drafted so far mirrors the AMA rules with minor differences on the engine side, 46 size instead of 40, and a wider approved engine list for the 424 club class. Airframe spek is to remain exactly the same as the AMA rules. Weve just had news from europe that they have finalised thiere rules for the 2007 Eurocup and mirrors the 428 sport class with the exception of no nitro. so in 2007 there will be a new European champion. Couple of questions to you guys on this one, the Europe 428 sport class has been running times around the 76 sec, but ive noticed your times seem to be a lot faster, is the course you use the same as the FAI f3d course or is the nitro counting for the quicker times, or youre just quicker!!!!! In the Uk we hold a National championships for all aspects of flying, do you guys have such a championships for Q500, or do you do something different in each state. The first year is expected to run pretty relaxed and will allow any teething problems to be sorted in readiness for the 2008 season, Our web page for pylon racing has started to contain a lot more info for Q 500, not completly up to date, feel free to visit and pass comment . www.pylonentries.fsnet.co.uk Thanks for all your replies and looking forward to a possible Q500 world championships one day Regards Darren

Thankyou Ed and Joe and Jeff for taking the time to answer, lots of info for us to digest, would i be right in saying the 424 class most places run the specific .40 size motor, but some states differ slightlyand allow .46 Joe we have the same problem here with 90% of all want artf planes in all disiplines, the majority of kits weve seen availible are mainly from the US but by the time youve added shipping and anything coming from the states get collared for vat and customs duty and carriage company handling fees the cost starts to rise. If were to be succesfull here in the uk we really need some home brewed kits, theres a few of us working on some planes (ill post any succeses or the broken bits) and if they work out, again theres a few of us that do work with composites and could take that further. Thanks again for your time gents Regards Darren

RE: UK Q500 questions
Thanks could some one let me know the how the rules differ between the 2 classes you have in the USA, airframes appear to be the same with power plants being different, and if anyone knows the Europe rules to would be a great help, this will help us get our classes sorted out here in the uk and allow us to compete on an international level Regards Darren
