RE: Are you scared of nitro engines?
I've been into this Hobby since the mid 80's when Nitro engines where alot harder to deal with... they remind me of the high end Italian race motors of today... alot has changed over the years and the engines are really quite easy to tune and will most likely run thru the whole tank without issue... Temps are not that much of a concern anymore as the materials and machining is so much better than years ago.... I've never been afraid of a nitro engine but I have been frustrated by a few over the years... most of the problems were caused by user error and not a problem with the motors... Read the manual.... its there for a reason... One would think that the manufacturer understands how to tune their motors...I currently run OS engines and I also have a few Traxxas motors and they work great... Just read the manual and you will be fine..... As for chiming in on gas motors... I have a HPI Baja and the motor runs flawlessly... yes its easy to run but not really any different than a nitro engine... I also run electric as well... Everything in life has a learning curve.. these motors are no different... Read the Manual... There... I said it for the 3rd time.... LOL

RE: deans?
the connectors on those batteries are designed for helicopters.. I purchased a bunch of these from Hobby City and they came that way.. for car use I cut them off and put on Deans plugs... I'm not sure of the name of them, but EC3 sounds correct.. I think Losi is starting to use them now on some of their electric brushless stuff.. They work but you will have a harder time finding connectors for them at the LHS if needed...

RE: castle creations sidewinder esc
fourwheels0.. what car are you running this in... 3S2200 lipo is kind of small for anything other than a Motorcycle... depending on your C rating of the battery, you may be running out of battery power, not an esc issue.. I have this esc as well as the Mamba Max.. I run this one on my Ducati bike as it doesn't require the power of the Mamba.. when the brushless motors start to move off the line they draw alot of current and your batteries may be the weakest link here....

No..they are not even close.. those Imex tires are 2.2 inch inner diameter... the stock T-maxx uses 3.2-3.8 inch inner diameter depending on what generation you have.... the tires you looked at are more for a 1/10 stadium truck...
ORIGINAL: dchin62973 The stock main motor should last about 150 full flights on average with a main motor heat sink. The stock tail motor sould last about 30 full flights on average with a tail motor heat sink. Before I sold my 22E's, I was getting on average about 35 flights on the main and around 30 on the tail motors.. 150 flights seems a bit excessive but I guess its possible.. I would keep a few spares onhand at all times so I was never down... going brushless is the way to go, but I've moved on to other helicopters.. although I loved the 22E, just hated the radio.. got rid of mine before the 2.4 came out... The eagle50/22E are the same thing.. they both average about 7-10 minutes on a standard lipo battery.. 400mah 3S lipo... I've never heard of flipping the tail and motor around. I imagine the gyro going nuts, but since I've never heard of anyone doing this, anything is possible... sounds like a decent idea to help cool the tiny tail motor...

RE: Need help identifying an os engine
I think its an 18 as well... I have one of them and its close... the head is different, but yours may be an older one.. Mine is a couple of years old and the head is all blue... can you possibly remove the engine, clean it up and take some new pics... the header is also in the way making it tougher to ID the motor... Mine has the # 18 stamped above the CVR, but can't see that on yours... maybe dirt or stuff in the way... You really need to clean that off to get a good idea what you have there... Let us know... OS doesn't make a 15 CVR anymore and I don't remember a 12... There are a couple of carbs used on the CVR depending on application.. Side or Rotary style.. can't tell from the pics what that one is... should be slide in a Maxx, but who knows what was in there... A properly tuned 18CVR will smoke a traxxas .15 all day.... I did a little digging and found this on the discontinued OS engines.... here is a link http://www.osengines.com/parts/images/21254000.jpg this is from a OS 12CVR and its long discontinued... the carb is a #10 series, but you have to look at the carb to tell... Hope this helps you... If you want.. go to the os engines webpage and type in discontinued engines in the search... scroll down to car engines and look at the list ..... alot of the parts have pics to help with your search...

RE: Deans connector...
All good ideas on how to solder the Deans plugs, some I never thought of.. connecting two is great idea.. I have used the aligator clip method myself and works well too... The real key is proper soldering technique in the first place.. Hot soldering iron.. min 40 watts, 60 is better.. tin the tip as well... make sure Deans plug is properly clean.(scuff) the ends.. tin the wire and the Deans.. place together and apply heat.. should only take about 2-3 seconds.. pull iron away and watch it cool.. should be a shiny connection.. If its cloudy its not a good connection and will fail at some point... The traxxas connectors require that you have a perfect solder joint.. Not too much solder or you wont be able to close the connector on the wire... If you skill are good, then go for it... if not, the Deans are easier to work with... The Traxxas connectors are easier to use, but the deans are pretty simple as well... both work as advertised... Bigtb17.. I've had some of the same issues with the chinese deans plugs as well... I use them in my chargers and my ground r/c's but not in my helicopters.. the cheaper ones have a smaller or thinner spring tab in the end that fails after repeated use... the connection just isn't as solid as the original... My introduction to the cheaper deans was from ebay... the seller didn't state the truth and I didn't know better at the time... They still work, but I wouldn't use them in a place where failure = $$$$$$

RE: Deans connector...
$9 for one connector is ripping you off... like others said, pairs are around $3 a set of male and female... the chinese knockoff ones are OK, I have a few sets, but they don't hold up as well and are prone to melting from a hot soldering iron (the tabs will shift in the plastic) making connecting them frustrating... You can tell the cheap chinese by the color.. they are a darker red color next to the W.S.Deans being brighter red... Samguan.. the traxxas connectors aren't that much easier to solder, but they do work well...

Its too dark in the morning before work this time of year and by the time I get home its dark as well... On my days off, I have so much stuff to do.. I try to find time and do fly here and there, but not like the summer... also, the weather is junk now... If its not too windy, its too cold or raining and yes we've had two snow events already... winter is just around the corner... LOL My wife doesn't go as far as to figure charging costs and such.. if the bills get paid first... she's usually pretty good.... there is a metric conversion chart online but the specs given say the tire is 4.72 inches.. which seems to me to be the tire height... and the width given as 26MM which is touring car width.(about an inch wide).. You have the truck.. measure the rim from top to bottom.... If its 2.2 inches and about 2 inches wide or so the prolines will fit.. If not... good luck with that one.. I doubt they are an oddball size, but you never know...

RE: Traxxas Customer Service IS Terrible
alexchan86... I've dealt with Traxxas many times on the phone and they have been great as well... What you asking/expecting them to do isn't likely going to happen.. You want them to send you a brand new servo because you say yours isn't working.. what you are describing sounds like a normal digital servo.. I have a few of the 2070 and 2075 servos in my traxxas t-maxx, rustler and nitro 4-tec and they are fine...If you think from Traxxas's point of view, it looks like you are just trying to get a free servo from them.. you can't produce a receipt and all they are asking you to do is send it in for repair... They will only send you a new one anyway.. its not worth their time to try and fix it... Also, If you are running a crawler you really need a servo with around 300+oz/in of torque, not half that...

My Cen MT2 was the worst truck that I ever owned.. Not a bad truck but you asked for the worse I ever owned.. The next would be the traxxas electric 4-tec.. Nothing broke but it wasn't drivable with anything other than the junk stinger motor that came with it... couldn't handle at all...Never could get that sorted out and sold it on ebay... I have the nitro 4tec and its 1000X better than its electric cousin...

RE: nitro without any ventilation holes?
I have a nitro 4-tec and I have no holes cut in the car except for the engine head which comes that way... My exhaust is routed out the side but I have a small stinger extension from my airplane days which is cut really short and pointed "almost" straight down.. works well for the application.. doesn't effect the performance in any way and there is plenty of cooling for the motor the way traxxas designed the body.. I'm sure other bodies are similar and you should be able to do the same thing... As with most nitro touring cars, there is limited area which to route anything thru the body.. I personally wouldn't re route the exhaust to the back of the car.. you are increasing lenght which the engine wasn't tuned for... It will run, but most likely at a big performance hit.. mostly on the top end.. I don't run my engine rich at all, its not a monster truck and isn't really straining the motor...

Castle Creations makes them in various sizes for their Brushless motors... they don't have the silicone ends, but you use heat shrink to keep the wires clean... being gold plated, they shouldn't tarnish or corrode.. I use them on my Brushless bike and Rustler.. I probably have a few old style bullet connectors at home, but never liked them much as they had a habbit of working themselves loose over time.. RE: DONE WITH NITRO
I've been in this hobby as well as planes and helicopters since the 80's... There is a leaning curve with anything you do especially with nitro engines.. You should try some of the early ones.. they would really give you something to complain about... I just ran my Tmaxx on sunday when the outside temps were much colder than they have been all summer.. guess what, I had to tune it... not much just a little richer on the HS and it was fine.. Its knowing what you have to do to make it work... I have alot of r/c cars and about half are brushless the rest are nitro and gasoline.. Bushless to be honest is more difficult because of the programming involved with the esc's and critical gear selection... yes it can be frustrating, but thats half the fun.. I love to work on the cars and I love to drive them as well... If you are complaining about nitro engines, please do yourself a favor and don't ever get a helicopter...... hours of setup for a couple minutes of flight... but thats the thrill of it.... Army2000ng.. you must be from NY area..... love the bodies on the trucks... Yankees and Giants.. here's a quick shot of my Kyosho buggy with my spin on the Bronx Bombers...
ORIGINAL: monsterbombs you can adjust a normal traxxas gear diff with different oils, no? a ball diff is definatly an upgrade for a racer as you can tune it without pulling apart anything (pop a driveshaft out thats all). The traxxas diffs are not sealed so they cannot be tuned with different oils.. You can mod them to be sealed its not hard to do.. basically they leak at the bearings so you have to get a oring seated in there to seal it.. and some silicone around the case.. I've looked at the ball diffs for the rustler, but they are not worth the money.. if you are a serious racer maybe, but for bashing no.. the traxxas diffs work fine the way they are, but could use some adjustability.. I will be doing that mod over the winter months..

RE: Lipo Explosion!
I've had a couple of helicopter lipo's short out, once in my pocket trying to warm it up on a cold day.the balance tap wires came apart!!.. thankfully it was a smaller capacity pack but it was 3S.. I felt the heat of the wires before anything "blew" up and quickly took the battery out of my pocket.. The battery was no good after that.. something internal shorted but the battery did not blow up or even puff... wasn't worth trying to fix it.. the helicopter cost alot more than the battery and I wasn't going to risk it... I've seen a few video's on lipo fires and most seem to be from over charging or compromising the battery.. ( breaking the silver foil).. seems that air reacts violently with the lithium in the battery and causes a fire...

RE: NEVER EVER BUY LOSI CHARGERS!!!
I went on the webiste and nowhere does it mention that it needs a seperate power supply... It is just a rebadged B6 charger that is common from china.. I have one and it works very well... the strange symbols you are getting happen on mine occasionally.. they look like chinese writing mixed with english.. what I've done is unplug the charger and plug it back into the power supply.. don't power up the charger with the batteries connected, or plug in the charger lead first.. power up charger to power supply, plug in balance taps then plug in discharge leads(the larger wires).. when I follow these steps the charger works great.. I won't tell you what I paid from Hobbycity for mine with the power supply.... I've seen the losi charger on horizons website and I can't believe what they charge for it... One thing about this charger is that it works well when you finally get the bugs out of it... I've checked the voltages against several other methods and it balances fine.. for the price I can't complain... Its not surprising that Losi can't figure out the charger.. .they didn't make it... almost forgot... the chinese original one comes with a manual that is not good, but it does explain basic charger functions... I guess whoever translated the manual gave it their best shot...
ORIGINAL: Brainanator This is what he said...:
ORIGINAL: khkim0102 #1. When I give just a little bit of throttle to move the car very slowly, it does not move smoothly. The motor and the gears sputter. But if I give a little more throttle, it does not sputter any more and goes smoothly and faster. Sputtering occurs only when the minimal input of the throttle is applied.
The words ''little bit of throttle'' and, ''very slowly'' make me think he only using a little bit of throttle, and making the car move very slowly. I can also reasonably assume when he said ''if I give it a little more throttle, it does not sputter any more and goes smoothly'' he means that when he give it some more throttle the car stops sputtering, and moves smoothly. Both of those are pretty much the definition of sensorless brushless cogging. Stuttering at very low speeds, with very little throttle input. So I guess I'm not seeing the part that makes you think he talking about off the line acceleration.
I read the thread at work and I guess I misread what he wrote... what he is saying is exactly what happens.. You are correct Brain in what you are saying....

all brushless (sensorless) will cog at very low speeds.... barely moving.. but it shouldn't cog when throttle is applied off the line when accelerating... I think that what he meant.... Mine makes more of a humming noise and a brief stutter but only when barely moving.. Off the line its all power....
ORIGINAL: Jailbird1818 #1 is common with sensorless BL systems. It's called cogging. That is the rotor passing through each magnetic field in the motor. #2 is tire balance, stick on weights will cure this. Nothing sounds ''wrong'' with the truck. Balancing the tires is something you want to do. -JB
Cogging is not the norm with brushless sensorless motors.. Its a side effect of underpowered batteries. The batteries cannot supply the amps or voltage required by the motor.. ..Lipo's will cure the issue and so will reprogramming the esc to run on Nimh batteries.. I've had that issue with my Mamba until I reprogrammed the esc to know it was running Nimh batteries and it worked much better.. still a little cogging if I really feathered the trigger.. I only run lipo's now and there is no more cogging.. You will still feel the motor stutter a bit, thats how the sensorless work, but nothing that I would call cogging... Tire weights are a must with the high speeds of the brushless system.. You won't realize them till you add more voltage, but it will be much more obvious when you do.. stick on weights are the way to go..

RE: traxxas 4-tec info needed guys!
There are quite a few differences in the older 4-tecs and the newer 3.3's.. The trans is different.. the gears on the 3.3 are taller.. the pulleys are different and the belts are different.. I converted my 2.5r to 3.3 and it worked fine..not to discourage you but its probably cheaper to by a 3.3 roller than to convert it, I found that out after adding the cost of the conversion... but if you have the patience and want a challenge go for it.. I kept the 2.5R in mine because its easier to drive where I go... I highly recommend getting foam tires and upgraded shocks or you won't be happy with the car.. Its not drivable in the older pro 15 design.. Mine does quite well, but its still a handful.. maybe a better drift car..
