RE: It's here and Looks GOOD new Hangar 9 Taylorcraft
Hi Chris; The floats are foam core, sheeted with balsa then fiberglassed and painted. I didn’t go all out scale since I wanted more of a quick sport float for the TCraft. They are 46 in length plus 1 for the bumper. The floats are from Sea Commander in BC Canada. Unfortunately he has his business up for sale and is not producing any products. However, there are many other float manufactures around that will do the trick for the TCraft. (Stay around the 46" length for the older version of the TCraft, 85.5" wing span). The weight of the aircrfat with floats is approx.. 19 lbs. (4 lbs. for the floats and rigging) The engine is a Saito 1.80, lots of HP, I fly at just over half throttle. Attached are a few more pics of the model. The one pic is a little darker since it was taken at dusk. Have fun if you do go this route, if you need any info re the float set up let me know. Best regards Randy

Hi Joe; Thank you for the info. just got off the phone with Fiberglass Specialties, they had one in stock and is on the way to me. Attached is a pic of my TCraft, much like yourself it's been in my hangar for a long time and a good loyal "soldier" on floats. Thanks again. Best regards Randy

RE: CESSNA 185 35% TMMY COMPOSITE
Hi All; Just back in from a few days away. Nice to get back to the building table. I hope to get a few "in flight" pics and video of the 185 with the new paint colour and design in the next few days. Have also been asked to do an article in one of our model magazines of the 185 along with having it on display at one of our full sized “Fly In/Splash In events. Summer is on its way, lots going on..........[:D] I’ll be in touch Randy

RE: TMMY Scale Composites 35% scale Cessna
Hi All; Just back in from a few days away and got caught up on the 182 thread. First up, congratulations to stlye fly and George with your maiden flights, a great sense of accomplishment and of course always nice to get the maiden behind you. George, great pics from “Nall, I really wish I could have made it this year and joined you fellows with my 185 . I’ll give you a call when you return home re the lighting system on your 182. Strut Attachment Point Re the wing lift strut attachment point at the fuse. You are definitely correct it certainly needs something to secure it firmly in place. Either blind nut or threaded insert. Did Tommy use a threaded insert? The only mod I will be making to the 185 in this area are the struts themselves. I don’t know if you 182 folks have experienced the same problem but at low RPM the wing strut vibrates. Once the RPM is increased the transfer of vibration decreases. I’m hoping the fix will be moving to an aluminum air foiled strut providing the weight is not that much. Split Cowling Re the cowling, it is certainly nice to have a split cowling or access to the upper portion of the engine compartment especially if you have engine baffling. Interesting with his modified cowling arrangement for the 182. Painting the Model Hi Parrot Girl, there are a lot of advantages receiving the model in primer gray as I found with my 185. Just a thought, there were approx. 18 separate pieces in total with my model, not hard to paint but did require some set up on how to hold all the pieces. If you go this route I can send you a number of pics on the methods I used. Have fun with your 182’s, they all look great. Best regards Randy

RE: CESSNA 185 35% TMMY COMPOSITE
Hi Fellows; I have been busy getting the models ready for the upcoming season and waiting for the weather to turn for the better. Looks like everything is coming together nicely. Just to advise Tommy has updated his web page with his available models which includes the C-185. http://www.tmmy.pantown.com Also included are the specs and costing. For those interested if there are any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. As previously mentioned Tommy is doing another shell for me that will use a twin cylinder engine. This model will have the split cowling, bubble windows (pilots and passenger side), and be fitted with stock exhaust location. (Easier to accomplish with the twin over the 4 cylinder). I was at the local float base over the winter to get a few ideas of paint design and colours. Nothing confirmed yet but I’m leaning toward the 1980 C-185 series, and thinking my colour will be orange and black on white. (see attached pic but with orange and black) Regards Randy PS float conversion is coming along nicely, just had to re-organize my order of assembly re pictures and video for Tommy.

Hey Parrot Girl and Steve; Like your idea of having the two Cessna's, just one addition.......[:)] Parrot Girl if you don't mind the tail draggers, go with the C-185 with the VH registration. Just had to get that in there, hope you don't mind.........[:D] Best regards Randy

RE: TMMY Scale Composites 35% scale Cessna
Hi Martin; Best check with the 182 fellows re tank size and location. My tank location in the 185 with the 3W 212 was behind the firewall mounted vertically. The tank supplied from Tommy was huge and could not be used. I'm using a 50 ounce tank which gives me ample flight time and reserve. If you are using a 150cc you may be able to use a tank that will fit within the motor mount. I'll be using that set up on the next 185 and the 3W 170. As mentioned, one of the 182 fellows will head you in the right direction. Regards Randy

RE: TMMY Scale Composites 35% scale Cessna
Hi Fellows; Style Fly, nice looking and functional transportation cradle. No worries now re flat spots on the tires or securing the model to avoid rolling around in the back of your vehicle or trailer. George, keep us posted on the added details to your 182, agreed, it certainly adds to the appearance and added conversation with the spectators. Also agreed, the size of model makes easier access and fabrication of those special parts. I’m just finishing the aluminum step on the fuse for the pilot access to the wing tanks etc. If you do pursue with the 185 at some point let me know and I can pass on my experiences with this model. Regards Randy

RE: TMMY Scale Composites 35% scale Cessna
Hi Fellows; The gussets you have added look pretty good and as you say a necessity. A fair bit of weight hanging out there with the trike gear or tail dragger. Looks like Tommy has changed his wheel selection a few times. The orginal with the 185 had a small industrial wheel and tire with a inner tube. No flat spots but very heavy. Thus the change over to Sullivan. Have fun with your 182’s this year, they look great. Regards Randy

RE: TMMY Scale Composites 35% scale Cessna
Hi Fellows; Just jumping over from the 185 thread and saw your recent posts. Going back a few pages, to confirm, Tommy uses epoxy resin on his shells, I’ve done reinforcing to the 185 using West Systems epoxy which works very well. Just remember to scuff the area well before gluing. A few alternatives re the flat spots on the tires. A cradle method is certainly a good way, another quick method that I use is a piece of thick 1.25 high density foam. It is primarily used for boat seats etc. Usually custom car shops that reupholster auto and boat seats have the product. I have put it to a good test with the 185 and have no flat spots on the tires . I am using Sullivan 7 Skylite tire. (see attached pics) Dan, I agree with you, if you can keep the fuse in one piece while travelling it makes for a quicker set up time. I have tried both with the 185 and like the option of the pre-assembled one piece fuse if you have the room. If not, Steve’s method is excellent. Good to see you back on the threads Steve. I’ve never had a problem re transportation (but it is a tail dragger). Your idea of supporting the aft section sounds good and would give you “piece of mind. I also reinforced a lot of the “high stress areas on the 185. I find the glue that Tommy uses is a little dry after it cures. I used a heavy weave fiberglass cloth cut in 2 – 3 strips. This was applied to both fore and aft sections of the fuse and inside the fuse at the firewall. Another area of reinforcement was to the landing gear casing/mount inside the cabin. Regards Randy PS Good news also Dan, your control mechanism will work fine in the 185.

Hi Scott; I have a 27% 120 C-182 that I purchased from Austar’s a few years ago before Tommy took over the molds. I got busy on the 35% C-185 and didn’t have time to finish the 182. I have too many projects on the go right now, if you are interested in the 182 send me a PM to rcurts@sympatico.ca and I can give more info. Best regards Randy

Hi Fellows; Tommy has now added the Cessna 185 to his fleet for those interested asked me to assist him in distributing the model in US and Canada which I have agreed to. If you go to his web page http://www.tmmy.pantown.com he has the 185 pictures with the remainder of information to follow. There is also another 185 he is completing for me that will accommodate a twin cylinder. If you have any questions please feel free to send me a PM through RCU and include your e-mail address. Hi 68 Mustang; Just re sent my message to your personal e-mail address. You should get it now. Hi Snobird; There are a few fellows on the RCU web that have put some threads together re the DC-3 build, haven't heard much lately or seen any videos yet. Agreed, it seems to be a pretty nice model for twin application. Tommy has been a great guy to deal with re the C-185 fabrication. Regards Randy

Hi Fellows; Here are some pictures of the C-185 all together with the new paint design. ( I'll send a few posts of the pics since RCU seems to be a little slow loading these days). I was hopeful that it wasn’t going to snow on Saturday for some pictures on the grass. Oh well, I had to shovel the snow in the back yard Sunday to get some contrast. Next thing to add are my nav lights and finish the interior. Best regards Randy PS She’ll look “sweet with the floats on her. Just like a good old hard working “bush plane.

RE: CESSNA 185 35% TMMY COMPOSITE
Hi Fellows; Just reassembling my tail wheel assembly and making a few mods for added strength. This is another update for Tommy re future 185’s. Originally the rod that goes through the fork wheel assembly is aluminum and flared on the end to fasten in place. (see attached pics before and after) It was starting to loosen so I replaced the aluminum rod with a 1/4 - 20 pan head machine bolt. I then used a thin nut to hold in place. No movement or loosening now. Tommy had initially sent a 3.25 tail wheel however I changed it to 3.5. I felt it was a little more in keeping with my main wheel size. There is still enough clearance for the 3.5 tail wheel. I’ll be in touch. Regards Randy

RE: CESSNA 185 35% TMMY COMPOSITE
Hi Dan; Good to hear from you, a little scaled down from your operational dual yokes, but agreed, sort of fun thinking of the small details that I couldn’t get to before. A quick question for you fellows, anyone mounted or thought about mounting a “Go Pro or similar small video camera to your 182’s. If so have you considered the location. I was thinking inside the cockpit looking out the front windshield but don’t know how clear the windscreen is from distortion. I’ve complicated that thought with the 185 due to the cross braces on the dashboard. I was thinking of a separate removable mounting bracket attached to the wing lift strut hold down point on the wing. Not the strut itself, there is vibration at low rpm. Let me know your thoughts . I’ll be in touch. Regards Randy
