RE: Can i save a rusted nitro motor?
This sounds like a story problem from a math book. So the total days rusted would be = 1 year + 5 or 6 days. Divide this by 5 or 6 tanks of gas and you get one rusted engine. I see. I would soak it entirely in nitro for a week. every once in awhile try rotating the crank and throttle shaft. It could probably stand to use some new bearing but would most likely work ok as is once you get it loosened up. After soaking for awhile I would take it apart and soak some more. Just my opinion. chad [quote]ORIGINAL: AnAlternateEgo About a year ago i mounted a brand new OS 61fx motor on one of my fav planes. Some dickhead then decides to break into my shop and gather up a bunch of stuff and set it out behind the building in some plot to steal. Well my .61fx that had only 5 or 6 tanks of fuel through it was left outside for 5 or 6 days before i found out what had happened and by then all the head bolts were rusted and the carb was rusted shut. This happened to immediately follow two crashes i had the week before(one was pilot error one was equipment failure) and i was just fed up with my planes. Last week i pulled this motor back out and felt the gumption to fix it and fly. The piston and sleeve of this motor is flawless but the shaft, bearing, and carb are rusted tight. I sprayed some PB Blaster in it last night and i've had it sitting over night, hasn't loosened up yet. I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for some way for me to save this motor without having to buy all new parts for it. Thank you in advance for any and all help you can send my way! RE: taxiing a warbird and taking off
Guys the "race start" did the trick! I was able to maiden the airplane. It flew real nice. I was a little caught by how slowly she rolls. Doing a barrel roll was a little difficult in relation to my 3D planes. Anyway back to the takeoff, it worked real well. I actually performed this maneuver twice. Hold, the tail, rev the engine full power, full elevator, release the airplane while gradually decreasing elevator till speed increases. No problems tipping over. I am looking forward to flying this beautiful airplane all summer long. Thanks for the help and other suggestions. Chad

RE: GMS Engine Tuning Problem
I am a proud (I hope) new owner of 2 GMS 25's used on a twinstar. One engine runs like a raped ape, the other doesn't. Im guessing an air leak as I can close the throttle barrel all the way and the engine continues to run. [8|] Time to start reading. Chad

taxiing a warbird and taking off
I have a 40 size corsair. I bought it used. I took it out today for a maiden of my own but could not taxi because the noze kept tipping over. The field I fly off of is rough. What can I do to overcome this? The elevator does not have much throw. I did have the elevator advanced to the up position while trying to taxi but it did not help. The COG seems to be fine. The wheels are big enough I guess (3-3.25"). Other than finging a flatter field what can I do to keep the tail down? Chad

John, that looks like a good idea. I will put the Rambo sewing kit in my survival box. Ill have to brush up on my sewing technique. This will give me another good reason to be in JoAnne Fabrics other then looking for balsa wood or rulers and such. Haha. I feel so out of place in there. haha

RE: aileron design/hinging
Thanks guys. John I have scene the sewn hinges before. Thats is a good alternative choice but I think I will go with the thin CA hinge. I agree about using the hinge slotting tool. That is why I asked. It would be very hard to keep the thing inline while trying to cut the slot. I did not think of of the #11 blade. That would work fine. Thanks Chad

aileron design/hinging
I need some advice on how to hinge my ailerons. I am building from scratch a smaller airplane 1/2 size airplane. the plans call out that the ailerons are just a single flat piece of wood and im guessing this to be around 1/8 inch thick. First, is there a technical name for this design other then "flat piece of wood" ?lol. My second question is what is the best way to hing this? I prefer the CA hinges. Do I cut the small slot in the narrow piece of wood or is there a better alernative method. I dislike torque tube. Chad

Ok, but lets say I had to add weight to the front anyhow for CG. Can I find one for OS engines? I wont add one. Im just curious as to why I dont see them.

pull start for airplanes?
Why dont I see pull starts being used on nitro airplanes? Is it a weight thing or clearance issue? I was pondering putting one on my airplane.

RE: National 747 crash
stupid question as I am only guessing but could the fuel have been pumped to the wrong tanks, like the back ones? IDK? someone said the plane was at the base to re-fuel only. Isn't the fuel a calculation in the balance of the plane? Chad

RE: is it really that good? u can do
I have a You Can Do. I love it. I have never had a problem with landing gear. I fly off a rough grass field. Not a rolled club field. It can fly very slow. It was my first plane. So I think its a good beginners plane. Thats just my opinion as other will most likely disagree. I glued the stab and everthing on mine myself as it was my first ARF. I used epoxy like the directions said so I dont understand why others are having problems with stabs falling off. Anyway I disagree. Chad

RE: flying around with flaps down
So I did a couple of things to the plane tonight and took it for a run. First I added some weight (I think it was around 1.5 ounces) to the very end of the plane at the tail. This moved the CG about 0.5" to 0.75" back. Second I trimmed both ailerons down. I think it flew better. I crused around for about 5 min with no flaps. Seemed better, and no stallls. I did not lay off the throttle to much though. I tried Charlies inverted flight test (trim guide) but first I trimmed for level upright flight. The nose definetly dropped down while inverted indicating a nose heavy airplane. In fact I could not make the nose go up by giving it down elevator. It just did not have enough ass, if you will, to overcome the weight. So what do I do now? Add more weight to the back in order to move CG back? Yes I will move the battery back furhter too! Some more info that may help us is: the current CG is 4.5" from leading edge. The CG calculator says I need to be at 6". The manufacture spec says 3.5"

RE: flying around with flaps down
No it does not drop when flaps deployed. In fact it balloons up. I can trim it fly straight with flaps retracted but I have to be flying fast. It is not what I expected. After practicing on Real Flight this thing was suppose to float through the air. I even read about others saying its a gentle airplane. Mine is not. It is a little heavier than manufacture spec'ed but I dont know if the weight they posted included the optional flaps. Thanks for the tip about the trim guide. I did not know of this. I will try this. Same thing Charlie said. Chad

RE: flying around with flaps down
Kitbuilder, if I recall i was flying along at a decent speed (flaps up) when it snapped. I was banking and turning when it happened. I cant say for sure but I think when I idle down with flaps up the plane starts decending real quick but level. I have only flown it three times. each time was nerve racking as it does not fly like my U can Do 3D. I got the impression that this plane would fly some-what stable at low speeds. This is all based on my experience with flying it on the simulator. I know.. I know. Charlie, That is It! I really like the plane. I built it from a kit so I do have a connection to it and want this to be successful. I will give your advice a try. Thanks. Chad

RE: flying around with flaps down
It is an AK models Simple Flier. With flaps up the noze wants to dive, not real drastic but non the less it does. It did snap on me with flaps up. Luckly I was high enough to recover. So what do you think? I was thinking about moving the CG back. Also the Vtail control surfaces looked to be straight with the stabs so I dont think its out of trim real bad or anything. The CG is back a little from manufacture specs but is forward of what the CG calculator spec'ed out. I dont know...

you can "eyeball" them. Also get rid of that ACER gyro. Get a Futaba GY401. You will have problems with that ACER.

RE: Tail Boom Servo Linkage Guides
I used a hot glue gun to secure the linkage guides on the tail boom. This will allow for removal when needed at a later time. You want these secure. i would upgrade to carbon fiber main blades as soon as you can. They are much better and you can definatly "feel" the difference. I love my Raptor 50 Titan SE. Its a very good bird. Have fun.
