ORIGINAL: JohnP2 You know you are too much in to "the hobby" when.... - You print out SlayerDude's Mego-Post on how to tune a 2-stroke engine and keep it for bathroom reading. - You know your UPS deliver person by name. - It's difficult for you to drive anywhere without thinking to yourself "That looks like a good bashing spot." - You keep one or more pictures of your vehicles on your phone. - You spend your time coming up with bits like this and posting it on RC Car-related forms. Add any more if you got 'em. ;-)
I read it and I didn't need to. I gave a hamper to my last courier last year as a 'thank you' for a year of looking after my RC stuff, new courier driver looks at parcel description and says "more toy car parts haha" lol. When you've been on drives donw every rural side road in your area just to see where it goes (missus) while you are scoping out new venues. What are you talking about? Every RC i own is on my phone, all the best pics are in a slide show on my screen saver, and a big pic of one as my lock screen... no pic of wife/dog/cat/kids.... All my internet bookmarks on my phone are RC related, except for two, one is google (so I can search for more RC stuff) and the other is Paypal (so I can pay for more RC stuff). What?....

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
ORIGINAL: cumminspower5.9 I did the same thing with the shims. What you said makes sense tho that having the washers behind the pin won't let the pinion seat itself all the way on the pin. I did throw some of those foam spacers in each drive cup between the transmission and diff. So before you said this, I have he foam spacers and the shims in. I'll have to see how she runs. Thanks for the find!
Yeah I would take the shims out, but let us know how you get on. Just ordered some HPI geolandars, still an all terrain but stickier than the useless D compound stock GT2's, my GT-2s are pretty much bald after a month and a half. I have some old tamiya king cab rims with Proline Dirt Paws on them that are good for the dirt and grass, just needed something to replace the stock ones

RE: Re entrants view of nitro vs electric
ORIGINAL: The_Shark honestly I think there is far less to nitro, if it dosn't run right its A-tune B-plug C-air leak or D-worn engine with no compression thats about it, electric doen't run right its- A-battery,B-esc, C-motor, D-connections, F-receiver, G-interference, H-gearing (thermal overload) or J- Mixture of two or more things.
The highlighted points are also known nitro problems too. In addition to the tune/plug/airleak/worn engine/
ORIGINAL: The_Shark and a strong engine needs but a 1/4 turn on the high end each day, big whoop. and check the clutch every gallon (again big whoop)
Try a 1/8 turn leaner in summer, 1/8 turn richer in winter. not to mention the fuel cost Ahhhhh gas ;)

RE: which car? i cant decide.
Easy answer when you compare two trucks where one of them is twice the price. ;) The Bullets don't have a following like the Flux HP, neither are they as durable. Apples with apples, why not wait a month or so and consider the Thunder Tiger MT4 G3? The Flux is fantastic but the MT4 G3 is well known as possibly the king of all RTR Monster Trucks.

RE: Official HPI Savage Flux XS thread...
I have no experience with toro motors, but i have heard lots of people choosing the castle 3800kv as the motor of choice in the savage xs. I do know the castle has .2mm laminations compared to the toros .35 (same as vektor 4000) and the castle has higher quality magnets which both keep the temps lower in the motor. I also know the castle 3800 doesnt draw as much current on the esc as the vektor does, (being far more efficient and not wasting current as heat) so this could be similar to the toro. I honestly dont know how much of a drop you will feel, if any, with a 100kv difference, try it and find out (and let us know your thoughts).
ORIGINAL: edubble Do I need a LVC in my Clod with a EVX2 speed control and the same battery? I see a few Lipo alarms from HobbyKing, can you recommend one? Thanks
Yes as the EVX2 doesn't have a lipo cutoff according to the traxxas site. It depends which battery you are using, if you are using 2x 2s lipos, and the balance leads can both reach, get this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18987 otherwise get three of these, one for you frog, and one each for the two pack's in the Clod: It doesn't matter, as long as each pack has an appropriate alarm for the cell count: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=22749 You will have to wait until they are both back in stock though.

RE: No Love for HPI on RCU
ORIGINAL: nitrosportsandrunner Hobby shops need to educate people. Yes, they are they to make money and that alone takes alot of hard work. But some (not all) hobby shops care more about making a sale that day, then about having educated (and happier) rc customers.
To a point yes, maybe educate them about their purchase, but then in some cases sadly that is easily swayed buy which model has the biggest profit margin. Traxxas and RTRs is what a lot of todays generation want in an RC, most of the kids today dont have the attention span to wrench on cars or learn how they work, I have even seen kids that are too impatient to wait for a battery to charge! I am a strong advocate for kitsets, I really get a kick out of assembling an RC and learning how it works and watch it come together along the way. When something goes wrong i know exactly how it comes apart and what to fix. I think this is why I dont get too annoyed at maintenance. In saying that (and getting back on topic)... I have a savage xs and a baja 5b ss. Bajas require, and are high maintanence. but is also directly relative to how you treat it aswell. The savage i have had to replace all the drive cups with upgraded ones and both arent as robust as i was lead to believe, but that is a case byncase basis and i am still running the stock steering servo in both without trouble and the esc and motor in the savage. Both are bags of fun when they are running and i have no problem with buying another product from HPI.l

RE: No Love for HPI on RCU
ORIGINAL: motormouth00 And all the HPI Haterzz out there, you need not apply to this conversation haha.
It's a open forum with members with opinions, it's no different to people liking one grid iron team over another.
ORIGINAL: cumquat my issue with traxxas is the unsavory (in my personal opinion) people it attracts. the ones that think their [enter model here] with all the upgrades RPM makes is the best rc ever made. honestly, if it wasnt for those people, i'd actually consider traxxas as an option for future purchases. it doesnt help that they are drastically overpriced either. why on earth would i buy a tmaxx 3.3 when for less money i could get an mgt4.6? why would i buy a revo when i could get a kyosho inferno neo st? why would i buy an X-O1 at all? as for hpi, i dont have any problem with them. i actually like several of their models, and have the intention to own most of them (i like the apache, but cant justify the cost). they may have had a few lame ducks in the recent past but they didnt ruin their existing line any, and in fact added to it.
Unfortunately this is how I feel aswell, for that exact reason you posted above. Now Traxxas are pretty good at what they do, their marketing and hype sell their product well. But I'm more of a scale person (I also generally hate RTR as it takes a 1/3 of the fun process of owning an RC away) and melted coke bottles with tribal graphics and chrome wheels doesn't really appeal to me. ( I say that and I just bought a savage xs, heh.) Usually the upgrades aren't RPM over here though, it's cheap nasty Integy stuff, which just transfers the damage to another part of the car. Kids buy them and come back into my LHS with their mommys saying it's a piece of (enter expletive here) because they were jumping it off bridges or doing a million MPH into a kerb and it's the brands fault. I was at a local dirt pile next to a skate park and I had a kid with a rustler (I think) laugh at how slow my RC was comapred to his and to "sell it and buy a Traxxas". I was driving my vintage gold pan RC10 with the factory associated stock motor... The sad thing is this happens in every genre. Motorsport, motorbikes etc.

RE: Lipo battery in Frog re-release?
You can use the Lipo's and the stock ESC if you buy a LVC (Low Voltage Cutoff) like the one form Novak or a Lipo Alarm which can be bought from Hobbyking and the likes. Most Lipo's you will have to put washers inbetween the chassis and the battery tray caps (part's A1 and A2) to extend the battery tray long enough to fit the approx 3mm longer Lipo packs. Have fun! :edit: Dont forget ball bearings in both!
ORIGINAL: Thiagooo The difference comes bout what? grease? Someone already switched to oil? What? Do I need to buy the grease and go again? Never grease or changed or differentials of the motor housing ...
I want to try diff oil inside the differentials too, can we use silicone diff oil? I tried a heavier grease and it seems to be oozing out the bearings a little (I could have put a bit too much in there). I am probably looking for somewhere between 50k and 100k weight
ORIGINAL: Asch74 Just spent the last couple of days reading this forum when i had the time. I own a RTR flux XS, Chase I had the exact same thing happen to me on the rear after about 5 or 6 packs truck was brand new. and found the exact same thing. all i had to replace was the bearing but when i rebuilt i put a small washer on top of the bearing before i put the pin and pinion gear back in, there previously was not a washer behind the pin. its been fine since. I actually just tore down my front diff to inspect for maintenance and the front diff had the washer behind the pin. it was put there during the build by HPI. I know my pinion shaft has a lot of slop in it. just wondering if the washer is not there, if the backside of the pinion or the pin itself is beating on the bearing causing the bearing to fail early in the diffs?
Sorry to hear you'rs did the same mate. I wanted to put a couple of washers/spacers in there as there was quite a bit of play in the cup when I installed the new HR cups, but didn't have anything handy at the time. I dont think mine had a washer in there either, the remains of my rear diff are posted in that pic a page or two back. I think you are right. With no washer in the rear the pinion shaft could very well be sliding back and forth and the pin damaging the bearing shield and letting the bearing cage and balls collapse. Cumminspower, did yours have a washer in there rear diff?

RE: The STUPIDEST thing I've done in this hobby yet!
Always done the outer on a 5th scale, want the outer to trap the most as the inner is the last line of defence, but a TGN redneck, HPI inner and a outerwears pre filter is four filters all up so... Hmmm, about 1990 I think, soldering away on my King Cab on the carpet in my bedroom as you do as a pre-teen, wondering why my soldering iron is no longer hot. Hmm it's switched on at the wall, I can hold the iron tip in my hand... Started to pull apart iron to see if any wires were loose inside, was about 15 seconds before I realised I was getting zapped and it was still plugged into the wall and switched on 240v of stupidity lol
ORIGINAL: rc-kramer Interestingly, with all the bashing my 'Box has done, I've never broken a body mount...
You will, if you dont break them by rolling it or jumping it and landing it on its roof, then because the mounts are horizontal and body vertical, the shell rattles and wears the mounts out making them weaker. Rears are usually first to wear and break ;) I had a cheap acoms servo in mine, the screw used to back out and the saver would be sloppy because of the cheap nylon spline, put a tamiya high torque saver (#51000) and a metal geared servo in there :-)

RE: Return of Lunchbox..
Nicely done there! I had a 3300kv brushless in mine for a while, but took it out and put a technigold in it, then took that out and put a sport tuned too. I have the old yellow CVA's on mine, no 3rd shock mod or anything. The single most important upgrade for a Lunchbox in my opinion (apart from bearings, every RC should have bearings!) is the alloy body mounts, nobody wants to buy the chrome body parts tree every week lol
