RE: How can I squeeze the most out of my OS .10?
Dieselize it! My OS.10 FP swings a 9x4 MAS at 10,300 rpm. I have a Davis head on it.

RE: Modela Junior 2D RC Diesel Engine
Yup - It's a good engine. I'm not at home - I'll have to check my engine book but I think it will turn a 10x4 MAS at over 10k with a nice idle. It was promoted to be a good match with a Lazy Bee. RocketRob had one on his little extra for a while too.

RE: MARZ Diesel lapping?
I always disassemble MARZ engines and carefully debur the port area with a little 400 grit or so but only on the corners of the ports. I do this because I've seen them score the pistons becuase they weren't deburred. I have had decent sucess throttling the MARZ eingine with an OS 10 carb put on the back. I raised the liner slightly by making a shim to go under the cylinder becuase they have sub piston induction. SPI makes engines idle badly.

RE: Lil Extra at Dieselfest II - What size PAW?
Chris, I think it was a ST 15 but some of the ST 11's look exactly the same and some of the 11's have a restricter in the barrel. I think for texico you would do better off with a smaller carb like an OS 10. It was a bit of a pain to machine. I turned a tight fit mandral and forced the carb onto it and then turned it down which left a very thin aluminum tube on the bottom. I crashed the plane on my first day and broke off the aluminum on the bottom. I then turned the carb body with a little inset and turned a steel throat and steel epoxied it back on - no problems since. It sure is nice to adjust the idle with the extra needle. Also the way the ST has the leaner setting at lower speeds is nice....

RE: Lil Extra at Dieselfest II - What size PAW?
BB PAW .19 with a Super Tiger twin needle carb I machined to fit. It has an exhaust tap on the mufler. It now sports a 9.5 x 4.5 APC prop. I got rid of that black exhaust stack too. It doesn't look quite so nice anymore but it still flies great and has unlimited vertical. Runs about 20 min on a 4oz tank. I made new landing gear to clear that 11x4 MAS. RE: TT Scooter "conversion"
Try restricting the air bleed hole and see what happens. Some of my PAW's run a little too lean at idle. If you check the size first, you can plug it up with epoxy and drill it the next size smaller till you get it to run the way you want.... Most PAW have a loose throttle barrel it seems like. You can use a wavy spring washer to take up the side to side slop too. Also check that the spray bar has the two holes at 90 deg and both pointing down at 45 deg when the throttle is open - if I remember corectly.

RE: 074 bent rod
Hi Tom, I have sucesfully straightend rods but not one bent that much - it still might work though. Rog, I love the smell of diesel!!! - but I'm a motor head.... John, I'd like to see your PAW powered Li'l Extra. Here is mine if you haven't already seen it: Shot with Canon PowerShot SD400 at 2007-07-25 It has a TBR .19 in it. I didn't shorten the nose but I did have to put the battery back in the fuse. I also put a Super Tiger twin needle carb on it with a mufler presure tap which really woke it up. I had to turn down the outside of the carb to get it to fit. I found the best prop for me turned out the be an APC 9.5x4.5 that turns 2,400 - 11,800 and give about 5+ min per oz of fuel sport flying. It did pretty well on the 10x4 MAS too but it needed a bit more pitch speed. It has ulimited vertical. I really like the plane. I did make longer landing gear for the big prop. Treven

RE: Cox 049 and 051
Bob is right that over compressing will break cox cranks and his idea of the teflon disk seems like a good one - I have not used it... I have used the RJL head with success but I am very careful to tune slightly under compressed. I like to hear just a bit of "crackle". If you compress till the "crackle" is gone it is too much. No matter how cheap a cox may be, I don't think it is a begginer engine! A PAW is well worth the money! Here is my TD .051 on a 7x5 MAS Here it is on a 7x4 MAS Here is a Surestart on a 7x3 MAS. Good ways to get rid of old planes...
I have a neighbor who told me that when he was a kid he had a buddy who would build F.F. planes and when he go tired of them he lit them on fire for their last flight.... I started looking at my oil soaked PT-19 that I stoped flying and removed the engine out of. I can't keep them all.... I thought maybe I could put some weight in the nose and trim it out and glide it off a cliff..... Seems kind of boring to just toss it in the trash!

RE: Mills pistons - steel and cast iron?
That is probably what it is but it seems like compression starts when the piston passes the exhast port so the relief must be really small. I.E. you would think compression would only start when the laped lower part of the piston pased the exhuast port.

Mills pistons - steel and cast iron?
The Russian and Irvine Mills that I have seem to have two different finishes on the piston. If you look at the crown the top 1/16" looks like cast iron and the bottom looks like steel. There is a defined line. This is different than any other engine I've seen. I read that the original Mills used a harened tool steel piston. Anybody know what is unique about the Irvine Mills or Russian Mills pistons??

RE: DNU and dry weight
Sulivan tanks are pretty heavy. The stopper is heavy just by itself. You could save some weight by using a bubble bottle tank. Are you using a battery switch - the solder on micro swiches at the electronics store are the smallest and lightest. 1/2 a control horns with screws are bigger than nessasary too. I like the little ones you just stab in and glue in place.

RE: Can I convert hitec to 2.4 using a module like this?
Whats the difference between surface and air on 2.4 -range? I gues it would work for a 3 chanel plane right? If they have that they must not be far from having them with more chanels soon!

Can I convert hitec to 2.4 using a module like this?
It looks like 2.4 converter modules are starting to come out.... Will this be the answer to getting into DSM* for 72mh guys like myself? I have a Hitec Optic 6. [link=http://cgi.ebay.com/Spektrum-2-4GHz-DSM-PRO-TX-MODULE-FUTABA-HITEC-SPM1114_W0QQitemZ220327231047QQihZ012QQcategoryZ34061QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem]Converter module[/link] On further research I see that DX6i are really not that expensive. Maybe that is a good place to start with 2.4.....

RE: Are Fasst and DSM2 the same thing?
Well it looks like they aren't the same thing. Spectrum tech is different for different makers. It also looks like recievers are still really expensive which is why I went with the Optic 6 a couple of years ago.... I was hoping recievers would have come down in cost...

Are Fasst and DSM2 the same thing?
Sorry for the rookie question but it is hard to keep up with the new tech! I want to know because I'm thinking about getting into micro flight packs and the Park Zone servo bricks and recievers work with all DSM2 compatible transmitters. I don't even know what DSM2 is yet......[8|] I found a almost new Futaba 6ex transmitter with a 2200ma lipo for about a $100 so I'm thinking about slowly switching away from my Optic 6 and moving up in the world! So is Futaba's Fasst system compatible with DSM2???
