RE: Aeromarine Sport 40 Issues
Hey Bill, Pictures of your setup would be helpful, but there are usually really simple solutions to most of your problems. Hot flex shaft is because of friction. Either the flex is running in a tube that is too small or there is not enough lube, however some heat is normal and to be expected. Hot engine could be caused by numerous issues, but the most likely culprit is a lean mixture condition. Two possible causes for that would be an improperly set high speed needle or a clogged fuel line. Stalling is probably a symptom of both too much friction in the flex and not enough fuel to power the boat under load. If you find out the 1/4 flex is binding in the tube, I would suggest stepping down to a 3/16 collet and flex. You really don't need that large of a cable on sport 40 with a clutch, it's just more rotational mass for your engine to spin. Good Luck, Scott

RE: OPS question
Hey Carl, If you could post some pictures of your two needle setup it would be helpful. The information HJ provided is a good ballpark. Depending on your altitude, 3.5 to 4 turns is probably a safe needle setting to START your engine. Now, RUNNING it there for an extended period of time is another issue altogether. If you haven't already, I recommend joining International Waters, post pictures and ask your question there. You will have access to some of the best information on OPS engines on the web. Not a slam on RCU, just a good group of experienced nitro guys who are familiar with the old OPS engines. Good Luck.

RE: Made by you. Diy vs. dishing money out.
My $0.02, "Why do online sellers sell a piece of metal and cable for 20 dollars when it takes 10 minutes to put together if that and the parts cost less than a dollar?????" In my opinion most people buy parts like Aeromarine and Hughey flexshafts because they are proven to be reliable race ready components. While true that the average pond splasher like myself may not require a high priced flexshaft, I still enjoy running my models much more than retrieving them. I will gladly pay the money for a part that used properly will hold up and provide many hours of trouble free service.
ORIGINAL: asupervee72 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5E01pdLg6w&feature=youtu.be here is a video of what she is doing. Ran 6 laps with the batteries a quarter inch forward from this run, but that was on glass... Could moving the bats back a quarter inch make it do that?
Asupervee72 your boat looks wicked fast in the video, but your strut appears to be set to a positive angle. If you try running it level to the bottom of the afterplane of the hull you will see a dramatic difference in the handling of your boat. Check out this link http://www.modelpowerboat.com/content.php?122-RC-Model-Boat-Hull-Attitude Another less popular possibility is that you may have exceeded the RTR Miss Vegas' performance envelope and will be doing a lot more retreiving than running in the future. Best of luck with your testing, looking forward to seeing your results. Scott

I had to mount the engine backwards that required a gearbox to lower the output to propellershaft, it now passes under the engine, this resulted in a reverse rotation, and a reverse running propeller. INCREDIBLE !!! AMAZING WORK !!!

RE: Identify this Rudder and Strut
Those are both Aeromarine stock products. If they are new I would think $35-40 for the pair would be a fair price. You will have better luck trying to sell them if you re-install the control arm and water nipple on the rudder. They aren't bad pieces, but they aren't as sexy as Speedmaster's hardware, so they aren't going to command top $$$

Hey Jae, I have been enjoying your build from the beginning and I must say, EXCELLENT JOB so far! Are you sure this is your first build? lol The only thing I would recommend is that you provide some sort of access to your fuel tanks for servicing before you apply the decking. If you develop a fuel line leak or the stopper goes bad how are you going to correct it? Just a suggestion... Scott

Quote... "We tested our Lauterbach today. 1st video is a test with a stock RCMK S254 with a CC Racing 2" Aluminum Powermaster Pipe. 63 MPH in the video. Lauterbach with Tuned Pipe 2nd video is the same boat/engine/prop, but instead of a tuned pipe, it is a straight exhaust (3' long coupler). Shocked the boat ran over 59mph! Now think about this...no pipe (minus $170) with about the same results. A little slower in the turns, but this is how the real boats ran anyway. Lauterbach with straight Exhaust Brian" I say go for it, Fridge!

Not trying to stir any pots, but the currency exchange rate does affect the price of Italian goods sold here in the US. To illustrate Blackout's point... The US dollar is currently valued at $0.80 vs $1.30 for the Euro. Simple math tells you that this engine at $400 US dollars would actually cost $320 if the US dollar was worth $1.00 But to stay on topic...The motor looks like it RIPS !!! Good job NovaRossi !!!

RE: Height of prop in water for hydro?
ORIGINAL: vasek All good points! I'll check it as you suggest. Since I've moved the strut tube up a bit, the angles gets better. It's pretty crowded with the batts up front, 6x 3S 5000mah, it gets busy fast. It's a shallow space between the rails for this boat. If the controller fits alongside the motor, there'll be a couple of inches left for the motor to be moved to the front if needed but not much. I'm starting to be happy with the mock up, making some headway ;) One think I couldn't locate on the plan is the COG. What's the rule of thumb on that? Thanks, V.
Hey V, looks like you are really coming along nicely with your progress. A couple things I would like to mention and or suggest as you move forward. You have two threads going for your build in two seperate forum categories fast electric and now nitro. If you want to keep contributors and yourself focused you should try to stick to one thread or at least one forum category. Again, I am just making suggestions, but have you ever heard of Rum Runner Racing Forum? Not sure I can post a link in the open forum but you would be wise to check it out. There are a very knowledgeable group of modelers on there who do nothing but scale FE hydroplanes in 1/8, 1/10, and 1/12 scales. Not trying to poopoo the people in here but the guys on Rum Runner are really hooked up with reliable parts suppliers, proven parts combos, scale accessories like drivers, dummy engines, and cowlings...the whole sha-bang. Hope this helps, enjoy your build. Scott

RE: Newbie needs help and advice
There is a leak between the back plate and crank case, any idea how I can scrounge up some parts? Searching for "HP 40 engine" in google is a nightmare.. all tractor engines. If nothing else I may try some RTV. If you can't find the correct gasket you can make one. It only requires an x-acto knife and a manilla file folder. If your existing gasket is intact you can lay it on the folder paper and trace around it with a pencil or fine point pen. Another way of transfering the image is to hold the paper up against the engine case with the back plate removed and burnish or rub the paper so the edge of the case makes an impression on it. Be sure and use a new sharp blade and keep trimming until your satisfied with the fit. Good luck.

RE: Miss Vegas Deuce Engine Starting and Running
hey cpeisher, how did your tuning go? In my opinion, when it comes to getting permission from your HOA the thing you should be most concerned with is noise. Your neighbors could probably care less about the small amount of emissions your toy boat is releasing, but they will damn sure raise a stink about the noise. If you really want to appease the HOA go stealth my friend and run at a respectful time of day. Good luck.

RE: going to run my 1/8th scale hydros, what do i need?
ORIGINAL: mxzrev thanks for all the input....i know its not easy to run one of these things but always loved these boats...they look and run like the real thing...i used to go to the real hydro races when they ran here in new york in the late 80s and early 90s....back then unlimited hydros were big, they use to show the races on espn...i know the sport has lost some of its appeal since then...maybe showing my age a little now...i really wish there was some local boaters around here, but there isnt...as for hobby stores again we dont have much of that ethier....thet are into the little nitro cars and trucks if anything,no boaters at all...they are no help what so ever, actually kind of rude....maybe i will just consider selling them and run a gas car or something....i used to mess with 1/5 and 1/4 cars alittle but i really want to run boats...maybe sell these and get a gas boat,a little less aggravating i guess...i do appeciate all the help but i just dont have alot of time to drive a couple hours to meet a fellow boater, kids r into sports so my time is limited...as for my current boats they r only a year old so im sure the motors are fine, never started....i guess i will ponder over it for now, thanks again everyone for your input.
mszrev, I hope my cautions didn't discourage you. I just wanted to emphasize the importance of experience in running a big nitro model. You are right, a scale hydro is not easy to run, but you can avoid a ton of aggravation with someone knowledgeable helping. In my opinion, a scale hydro is the pinnacle of nitro boat modeling and when that boat is flying across the pond in front of you at full song, it is an awesome sight. There is nothing more fun than having a successful day running boats at the pond and like HJ said, your kids might dig it too. As for me, I've been hooked on unlimited hydros since 1970. My parents took me to the 4th of July races at Madison every year and I still get goosebumps when I remember the sound of those Allisons and Rolls Royces thundering in that river valley...it made my whole body vibrate! Find the time, get some help, and you'll be glad you did, trust me! Scott

RE: going to run my 1/8th scale hydros, what do i need?
Hey mxzrev, I don't want to assume anything about your abilities to handle an RC model but it sounds like you are a novice boater. No shame in that, we all started somewhere. If I am wrong about your skill level, please accept my apology, but if your 1/8 scale boats are 9.5 quality, and you have never handled a big nitro engine or model on the water, do yourself a favor and hook up with advanced builder or someone who has experience with a big model boat. If the engines have sat for a long period of time it would be wise to perform an inspection on the internals, especially the bearings before you fire them up. Do you know if the engines are broke in? That will require some tuning and you would be wise to seek help with that, as well. When it comes to tuning an engine my motto is there is only one letter difference between RUNNING and RUINING. The grease in the flex shafts needs to be checked, all your radio gear needs to be tested for proper rigging and operation, range check, etc. etc. Scales are big, fast and as you said, tempermental. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to get some help before you go to the pond. It will make all the difference in the world, trust me. Hope this helps. Scott

RE: Miss Vegas Deuce Engine Starting and Running
"Well i never heard back from anyone" ...in post #6 by Jerry Dunlap (the designer of the Miss Vegas) answered your question. You have to read the post to find where he inserted his comments. I believe he recommended OD 88 plugs and Grimracer 50% fuel from Tower Hobbies. "Will the higher oil content the heli fuel i can buy locally shorten the life of my glow plugs?" The short answer is no, but there are always other factors that can affect plug life. Your heli fuel should be fine, probably a good choice for the first gallon of fuel to burn anyway, as it's high oil content will keep things nice and slick during break-in. With the cold plug and high oil content it might be difficult to obtain the "optimum" HS needle setting for peak power, but you should stay away from the edge of that cliff until you get your engine broke-in anyway. The best way to find out how your plug/fuel combo is going to work is to go to the pond, light that bad boy up and burn a couple of tanks on a fat needle, then check your plug and see what's up.
ORIGINAL: megamaxx ok step 4 has got me,it says make a strut plate out of 1/8 ply(scrap) to space the struts i assume, but does not tell me the length so i know how far to space them and how far up part E is supposed to be from the back of the boat!!!
If I remember the strut plate is actually a 1/8" doubler glued to the hull bottom in the center most rearward section. This is to reinforce the propshaft strut if you chose to pass it thru the hull bottom. I did mine that way, but I wouldn't recommend it or do it that way again. I would mount the strut on the transom as it is much easier to adjust and tune the hull. If you could post a picture of the area or the instruction sheet that would be helpful.

RE: Engine suggestions
Hey Megamaxx, you're right, the instructions are kind of a joke and the wood is just awful. If you want your boat to be as nice as possible do not put it together with the supplied wood. Use the kit as a template and trace the parts onto good quality wood. The only supplied wood I would use is the decking. If you have to use the supplied wood framing be sure and use plenty of stick wood 1/8, 3/16, or 1/4" square, whatever your local hobby shop stocks, to brace the framing. This will give you stronger glue joints and lengthen the life of your model considerably. Don't forget to make lightening holes and windows in the frames to trim weight. The supplied wood will become flimsy after you cut out the lightening areas but the stick wood will help keep things rigid as you glue it together. Looking forward to your build, good luck!
