RE: For all you homelite fans!!!
Tony knows his stuff , try what you are talking about, if it improves and doesn't have any handling issues, then I would go surface drive . Where you are running a Homelite , it is somewhat heavier, so you might not have the handling issues like you would with a zenoah .

RE: For all you homelite fans!!!
It's not your prop, I've been building homies for a long time , you raise that strut and set your pipe around 12" and it will sling that 482 or the 280 with ease . You should be in the 40's at least .

RE: For all you homelite fans!!!
If you can't find a different pipe just put a section of pipe in it to get it out to what you need . You might be able to use copper couplers , with hose clamps . Just use use a hacksaw to cut 2 grooves in the end of the coupler , so it will tighen down on the pipe .

RE: For all you homelite fans!!!
Raise it as far as you can , run it and if it improves , then make it surface drive , you will see a big difference . From the center of your pipe [ largest Dia.] to the face of your exhaust port . [measuring down the center of the pipe] should be around 11 1/2" to 12 1/4"

RE: For all you homelite fans!!!
So if I understand you correctly , you are running a sub surface drive , if you are there is your problem, raise that strut up so your drive shaft is laying in the "V" of the hull you will see a big difference in your engine unloading and the hull getting out of the water. Jim

The engine is a 2 port and I set the timing at 176 degrees on the exhaust ,so it should still have some torque.

I have bumped it up over 15500 rpm on the test bench and it is smooth as can be . All this is experimental , you won't know what it will do until it in a boat .

Here is the full crank , 4 bearing , 30cc homie I was telling you about . I'm almost finished with it and have test fired it a couple times . Here is a link to the video of it running . The flywheel , coil and pullstart are off a zenoah 23cc . All mods were done by me . Jim http://youtu.be/V-uxvIVAQrU

25cc - 1.312 30cc - 1.437 If it's a stock homelite 25cc , it will have a bridge in the exhaust port . If it's been modded the bridge might have been removed . Jim

After you stuff the crankcase , you can take a grinder and unshroud the rear transfer . I do it to all my engines . Does make a difference. Jim

RE: Ryobi/Homelite 30cc duration numbers???
Homelites are not race engines , but a economical way to get started in rc boating . They are the engine that started the gas boat craze , and for someone who is on a budget , a great way to have fun . I modded a FS 80 years ago. I put a 30cc homie cylinder and piston on it , ran great Jim

RE: Ryobi/Homelite 30cc duration numbers???
I have a modified , one piece crank . It has been made into a full circle crank , I ground the rod pin to .375 to accept the heavier rod and better bearing . I don't have a case right now , but will probably bore out a newer case to accept the larger bearing needed for the one piece crank . I don't use base gaskets , I just machine the cylinder base to get the head clearance I want and then lap the cylinder into the case face . Perfectly straight and a perfect seal ,with some Hi-temp silicone .You can widen the transfers at the base just taper them down to the OEM width . Makes a pretty good engine . The rear pull start won't work with the one piece crank , as the rod pin isn't long enough . You can use a regular case plate and put a regular pullstart on the front of the engine . The bearing in your pullstart now has no effect as far as stability for the crank , and your turning more mass with this type of starter . If you can do your own work , you can make a great engine for little to nothing . Jim

RE: Ryobi/Homelite 30cc duration numbers???
Why would you need to fill the intake port. The #'s are usually low and the port needs opened up . But yes it would work on the intake side. I did a 4 port homelite before, I ground the transfers wider at the base and left the top of the transfers stock. It ran well. If you use a one piece crank ,your engine can survive higher rpm. I build and run homelite and zenoah ,yes performance wise the zen is a more powerful engine , but if you can do your own mods , you can build a homie for practically free., and it will run a boat in the high forties , with the right setup. RE: new boat have some ?
The John Deere 30cc is a homelite built engine. You can take the pullstart housing off your older engine and it will fit on the Deere , if you want to have the engine mounted in the same place. Jim

RE: Ryobi/Homelite 30cc duration numbers???
You have 2 options, one is to put a thicker gasket under the cylinder , which not only changes your compression , but also your ports . The other I have did for a guy that had the same problem .I measured how much the port was open under the piston , and then the height of the port, then removed the cylinder and glass beaded the Exhaust port , then placed a piece of tape over the port on the inside of the cylinder. I used Devcon Titanium epoxy on the bottom of the port and let it cure. I then subtracted the amount that the port was open under the piston from the height of the port and used my grinder with a burr to blend in the epoxy to that size. It worked ,but remember the surface in the port has to be really clean for this to work . Also if you do glass bead the port , put a piece of thick rubber on the inside of the cylinder , so you don't blast the bore of the cylinder. Hope this helps, Jim

RE: Ryobi/Homelite 30cc duration numbers???
You can up the compression , but be careful not to lower the cylinder too much , or you will end up with a free port situation,[ when the piston is at top dead center the exhaust port is exposed at the bottom of the piston] The one piece forged crank will have to have the rod pin ground to .375 , so you can use the newer, better rod and bearing, and you will need to have the block the crank came out of , as the bearings are bigger for the one piece crank. You can widen the transfers and match them to the block. The best #'s for ports on a homie is EX. 168 to 170 [with forged crank 172 to 174 ] , Intake 152 , .020 head clearance. For a 3 piece crank 13,500 rpm max , Forges crank ,15,500 rpm Go to youtube and look at the Homies I have been modding for years. Search "chipbreakr" Jim

I have a Firehammer mt with a DDM 29cc engine on it. I made my own pipe for it . I have been making pipes for gas boats for years , so this wasn't a real hard fit to make. Here is a pic of the pipe before I painted it . It really lit this truck up compared to the aluminium box muffler that was on it when I bought it . Jim
