RE: FUNJET
risky One more thing...on the wing tip tank things...sand them on the top and bottoms to match the surrounding wing surface...do not sand or change the end of the wing part. I just sand the tanks on the top side and bottom side....you will have to match the leading edge contour area of the tank to match....this will reduce a lot of drag and it gives you more lift..not much but you will see a diff. on landings...much easier. If you need pics I can do that...I have a old fuse in the hanger. C

RE: FUNJET
ORIGINAL: risky Thank's chipped prop. Did you sand and fill before monocote? or just go over everything as is? I was thinking about adding some ca hinge's to reinforce the existing foam hinges on the elevon's. My understanding { maybe i'm wrong} is that to get extreme speed's you need a low pitch little bigger prop to overcome wind resistance. I'm running a 4.75 x4.75 on my 120 mph funjet now , but i wonder how much cavitation i'm getting and losing efficiency. That's why i was thinking about a 6x4. When I watch you tube vid's it seem's to be the prop of choice...Thank's again
I do fill the wing seams with DAP brand lite weight spackling. It feels as nothing is in the container when you pick it up. You can do that...low kv motor 6 to 7 inch prop with 4-5 cells. You will have speed and max climbing. I just like the scream of a high kv motor......[:D] With the canopy removed I get much more air to the prop and motor. Just make sure you have a watt meter and use it to test the diff. props. I had to retire a 60 amp esc as I was pulling 74 amps thru it...I didn't have a watt meter. On the elevons I custom make mine from available balsa elevon stock.....You can use 3M extreme packing tape to make sure your elevons don't rip out. I'm surprised at 120 your not getting flutter due to the foam elevons not being able to withstand the torque from the servos to move. You can wrap the elevon on both sides, then use a piece to cover the gap........to cover the gap (area where the movable foam meets the wing) gently move the servo and elevon all the way down ( your taping the top of the wing) 1/2 the tape on the wing...now fit it in to the crease....then on to the elevon ..check for binding...you now have a strong hinge the whole length of the elevon. Please check the control horns after each flight...look to see if you see signs of pulling thru/out. Props Try....... APC 5.0x5.0 APC 5.5x4.5 (one of m favs. for over all performance) BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE the props...your turning around 28,000 rpms know your max amps on the motor your using...and on the esc It's best to have a min 10amps under the max amps on the ESC....'cause when you cook the ESC your going to crash. I see your using ARC motor and castle ESC both can take a beating. The first time I saw ARC motor was at Joe Nall Fly In..here in SC. They were on a RightWing...going 140 plus on 5 cells. Both motor and battery were super hot on landing.....but very impressed Cp

Just got my watt meter...very cool toy. Readings from new stryker APC 4.75x4.25 (lowest pitch I have) watts 1100 amps 74 Wonder how long the e-flite 60 will hold up after this past weekend as I was running APC 4.75 x 4.50 Cf prop. Lucky me it did not go BOOM[X(]. Lesson learned you better have a meter when you go to high power...see you CAN teach an old hairless dog new tricks[:D][:D] C

Just to be clear I'm the voice behind the camera...my expert club pilot, David Stewart is the one on camera. What you can't hear due to the music and the plane noise are his comments about the plane flying and "that was fun" after the last battery. Gryphon your next. Cp

RE: Official F27 Stryker Part 8: Beginners to Custom Darkness
Testing a new motor Here's what I have so far...... Upgraded to a new mount for the flat deck as you can see in the pics. screws/bolts on. Alum. material. Will accept inrunner 28 mm and outrunner. Flew the plane on 4 cells. Turning APC CF prop 4.74x4.50. ESC E-Flite 60 amp .....72 mhz FM rx. Speed is well over 115 mph easy. I do not have amp readings ...but I do have a meter on the way...Gryphon is most likely passed out on the floor.....I have NEVER owned a amp/watt meter. I did get temp reading on landing. Air temp Sunday 52 degs Motor temp 70 Battery temp 118.....Zippy 30-40 c rated 2650ma 4 cell Performance 1-Screaming loud...which I like...sounds like mopars in the videos...3200kv Outrunner 2-Climb rate is unlimited 3-Ran the whole flight WOT 4-Current plane design performed GREAT....I did a slow roll coming out of a dive 30ft over the runway...in control no flutter...rock solid 5-Loops as big as you can make them....still WOT 6-Motor shaft stock is 4mm 7-Total weight 32 ozs ready the throw I'm very impressed with this set up. I have never flown my Stryker with this much power and speed Remember this is a 40 dollar motor. The quality is unreal. I had microDAN look at it and he was impressed. Conclusion I think I may have another motor for "THE LIST"
ORIGINAL: c_makhija Hi Guys, Is anyone using the microdan 2900kv motor with the new castle ice ESC on 4s setup. I have the scorpion ESC and it will not run on 4s with the microdan 2900kv motor. Just want to be sure before i invest in a new ESC. Thanks. Chaitanya.
I know that a E-flite 60 will run it. The problem is the high switching rate on the Scorpion 8-16kh On the e-flite it is 8-12-32 kv and the motor runs great on 12kh and 5-10 degree timing. Look at the ICE and look for the switching rate freq. Pm me if you need help. We have to get you in the air.

RE: Official F27 Stryker Part 8: Beginners to Custom Darkness
Greetings I decided at the last minute to attend a fun fly in York SC. Which is about as in the middle of nowhere you can go. Any way I only stayed about 2-3 hours. Flew the Stryker...the only one there. I was running MircoDan 2900kv on 4 cells (proped down due to the number of planes in the air) APC 4.75x4.75. Was radared at 85 and 86 mph. Proped up to a APC 5.0x5.0 CF prop and radared at 98mph not bad for the little outrunner. I'll be testing a new motor this week...if it comes in. 3200kv it can run 3-4-5 cells. I'll post the results. If it's as good as promised I'll film it. It will be on the Stryker...but it's really for the new FunJet in the building stages. Watch out this motor may be a secert gem. And it's under 40 bucks AND it's not from Hobby City. It's been reported to produce 140 plus on a FunJet on 4 cells. OMG..that's fast. Thats on a stock Funjet On one of my streamlined plane.....................145-150??? We'll see. Cp
ORIGINAL: theb1bman I will be using 2 sizes of CF rod. The bigger one runs full span and makes the pivot point and the smaller fits inside. One smaller one on each end of the ailerons the ailerons are the same size as a stock funjet there is not going to be any wood on this plane I am going for 100% CF just like my B1B what are you using to make your mold? I am done using plaster I made my servo cover molds and air scoop mold with fiberglass and love it
Post some pics to show how you do this. Cp

Hagar69 Look at the no load current draw 4.6 amps That puts you in the 30-40 c rated battery min. It will kill a 20 c rated batt. I'm thinking 3000ma min if not a 5000ma battery. That's a LOT of weight to haul up....just saying[8D] Cp

The 6x4e is a thin prop designed for MUCH slower kv motors. I'm guessing that due to the flex of the thin prop you did not over amp system. That said you can expect blistering performance with the above props. You MUST balance these props...if you don't you run the risk of damage to the motor bearings. You will be in the 110 to 120 speed range with the new props. You may try a APC 5.0x5.0 but check the amp draw on the smallest prop then work up to close to max amps. Make sure you check ESC amp range 60 amp min. and max amp on motor per mfg. Your amps will drop in the air. Amp test are static on the ground. I'll guess your pushing past 60 amps. buy 2-3 of each. Rule of thumb...The prop is the transmission of the plane. That's why there are so many lengths and pitches on the market. A diff. mfg. will yeild a diff. result as most mfgs. do not use the same air foil design on the prop. blades. Post you results....start small and work up. you won't believe the diff. in the correct prop...watch for torque roll to the left on launch. Cp
ORIGINAL: blanik213 theb1bman looking good what do you think your empty weight will be compared to a stock empty weight and did you install a spare system in the wing and formers or bulkheads in the fuse before you joined the two half's also what oz weight cf did you use. I finished my modified TJ which is now called the AURORA.I had hoped to maiden last week but discovered that my choice of motors lacked kv was too high and would pull way too many amps using the rite prop for the thrust I wanted. I am now using Just Go Fly 550th for the first stage of sorting things out, plenty of thrust will make for a safe uneventful launch. I will be making a plug of the Aurora in order to make a glass version of it once all changes if any are finalized . The pic's show two different canopy's one for show(semi scale look) and one for GO(low profile speed canopy)and yes I know the props are backwards it was just a photo op.
I'll say it now if you haven't flown a FJ that's streamlined before your going to SHOCKED at how much smoother and more control you have. I wish you would post some build pics. as you work is just ....well......I'm speechless[X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(] Cp
ORIGINAL: eagle815 After reading and I'm buying a MicroDan 2900! I like the power to weight specs and I can use a bigger prop for easier hand launches. Now I need to get one of those custom motor mounts! Gotta look back to see who it was that makes em'.
One thing I must report. If you buy http://www.gobrushless.com/shop/index.php?app=ccp0&ns=display&ref=splash Do not purchase a Scorpion ESC for now. Scorpion is have a issue running the motor on 4 cells. I run a E-flite 60 amp. I think that the problem is the voltage of the 4 and higher count cells. I also see a diff. in the switching freq. Scorpion 18kHz...... E-flite 16kHz...I do not know about others on the market. Scorpion is aware of the issues and is working to see if a fix can happen without returns. As I get more info I will post. The issue is with the ESC NOT MircoDans motor make sure you understand that point. Cp

RE: FUNJET
ORIGINAL: Zman39 Thanks. I am using Hitec 65mg's. So if I understand correctly, these arent strong enough to hold elevon up at high speeds? Z
The metal gear 65's are good to at least 120mph. At least in my case. I would look into the elevon flex and think about the fixes I posted. These fixes work but it's your plane so you may have another way.....which is all good as long as it fixes the issue and you can do what you like to do GO FLY!!!!!!!! You may want to use a larger diameter control rod also. I would have to get the diameter I use...which is piano wire...or you can remove the ones you have heat up glowing red and dip into cold water which will temper (harden) them. Some time under load a smaller size control rods will flex instead of delivering the servo force to the elevon(s) I also do not use any to the servo arms control horns etc. that comes with the plane stock. I use heavy duty servo arms ...http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD668&P=ML 1/2 control horns...... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD934&P=0 kwik link connectors one on the horn http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD925&P=0 I sub. the screw with allen set screw,,,cleaner. I use a solder on connector to the servo end of the control rod. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXD894&P=0 I haven't had a failure. Plus it's super easy to adjust the elevon during set up one set screw slide the rod tighten...done. all connections placed in the top holes...if you need more or less travel adjust in the radio...that way you get max torque from your servos and do not over load them. RE: FUNJET
ORIGINAL: Zman39 I was kind of wondering if the ail is flexing at that speed, wonder what a good way to stiffen it up?
Couple of things. 1- What type of servos are you using. 2- If you using Hitec 65 or 82 metal gear then you have a elevon flex issue...if not you may be over powering the servo due to speed. Make sure you have taped the elevon to wing gap. Tape on the top and use high quaility electrical tape. Move elevon to max down position, tape, move to opposite direction and carefully tuck the tape into the gap. Check to make sure no binding of the servo/elevon. Quick cheap and it works. First quick fix... Buy a roll of 3m Extreme Packing Tape. Most office supply stores supply this. Wrap top and bottom of the elevon. May need 2 pieces to complete. Second fix apply on 1 side 3/32 thin 3ply plywood. It's almost paper thin. You can epoxy on or med CA on to the elevon. Third fix skin the elevon with carbon fiber strip. very $ and time consuming. Your choice Cp
