RE: Mini Ultra Stik Conversion
I taxi through grass to a rubber mat runway. It's actually an old conveyor belt off of a large newpaper printing press. The problem is the rubber mat is slick and the tail skid doesn't do well on it. Last night I installed a stearable tail wheeel. I used a Du-Bro Tailwheel Bracket (part # 375) and the associated Du-Bro Tailwheel for that bracket (can't find the part # but rubber wheel and aluminum hub). This is the bracket and tailwheel for a .40 sized plane which is a little big but.......... The front hole of the bracket is the correct length to match up with the back bolt that secures the vertical/horizontal stabilizers to the the airframe. just ream out the front bracket hole a little and install it with the rear bolt/nut. This correctly aligns the tail wheel wire with the rudder/elevator hinge line. I used a long thin screw to secure the back bracket hole through the horizontal stabiler into the air frame. This made take off, landing and taxing much more stable and manageable. Pictured below is the tail wheel assembly along with the extra weight for CG. ................................................... Also I started out using a Zinger 9x5 wood prop. I then switched to a Master Airscrew 9x5 prop which I balanced as close as humanly posible. Immediatly I noticed the Master Airscrew prop vibrated and shook the airframe much more then the wood prop. After 2 flights I switched back to the wood prop. I flew another 3 flights after work today (yea sucks I had to work on Saturday). The more I tweak this plane the more I like it. I already have metal gear servos for the rudder and elevator. I have order metal gear servos for the ailerons and will install them as soon as they arrive. She is a fast flyer (for her size) and I tend to fly the "snot" out of her so I don't want to strip the aileron servos in mid-flight causing a crash like I did with the electrostik conversion.

RE: Mini Ultra Stik Conversion
Last night I added 1 oz of lead weight to the underside of the tail just between the 2 rudder mounting bolts. This greatly improved the CG and she flys better then ever. She also does a little better taxing through the grass. Flew another 3 tanks earlier with the new weight configuration.

RE: ElectroStik Conversion to Glow
A while back I swapped out the .40 LA for a TT Pro .46. She was a screemer with unlimited vertical. Unfortunatly this Saturday I was really flying her hard at WOT making very tight pylon raceing, full banked turns. Towords the end of the fuel tank the elevator servo started to go out. I cut the throttle way down and attempted to come around for a landing. On the last turn into final the elevator servo totally stripped out. I straightened her out but she slowly sank into the farmers field (past end of runway) doing a cartwheel upon hitting the ground. Although not a total waste I am not planning on fixing her. I have another more approiate plane I'm looking at to house the TT Pro .46 If anyone attempts this conversion, totally cutout the servo bay and make a new servo plate, one that will hold full size servos. (hind sight is 20/20)

RE: Electric Gee Bee
Well I hate to admit it but this project is a bust. On the 4th maiden she finally took flight but was totally unstable. She kept wanting to veer to the left and I couldn't get her to go back to the right. On the left was some construction workers and a bunch of parked cars so I eventually ditched her into the ground before I hurt someone or caused damage to a car.. I stripped all the parts out of her for my next project and she has now become a very expensive wall ornament Check out my latest conversion sucess at www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11206947/tm.htm

Here is the final electronics placement inside the main fuselage compartment. I am not fond of the quick connect type of servo/pushrod holders but thats what came with the plane so with some blue locke-tite I used them anyway. Anyway enjoy the pics and if I get a chance I will try and take a video at some time. This was a great conversion and would make an awesome first conversion for someone wanting to get into small glow planes. If you have any questions be sure to ask.

The battery was installed about 1/2 way between the TE and the horizontal stabilizer inside the fuselage. I had to glue in place a plywood holding tray with a vecro strap in order to hold tyhe battery in place.

I cut out the battery holder tray from the front compartment. I then reinforced the front compartment with some plywood strips and added a foam and velcro mounting system for the fuel tank. I used a 4oz flex tank. A 6oz tank was a smige big and I have yet to find a 5oz tank available for sale.

Mini Ultra Stik Conversion
Since my last conversion was a total bust (Maxford USA - Gee Bee "Y"), I stripped all the parts out of it and did this Mini Ultra Strik EP conversion. Eflite Mini Ultra Stik EP Converted using OS .25 LA 9 x 5 wood prop 4 oz tank 9 gram servos 1100-mah 6-volt NIMH battery Spektrum receiver. AUW came out at 32oz Last Sunday night I ordered the plane from Horizon Hobby. It was shipped on Monday. It arrived on Wednesday. I started the conversion and finished it up Last night (Saturday). This was a very easy converision. I took it to the field and even thought is was a bit windy with decently strong gusts I maidened it anyway. I got 3 flights in total. Take off's were way crazy. They had a good bit of right angle thrust built into the motor mount/frame area. In the future I am going to add a few washers to take out some of that right thrust in hopes of calming down ther takeoffs. Once in the air she flew great. She had plenty of power. Seemed like unlimited vertical or at least vertical until I got uncomfortable with the altitude and then throttled back and let her dive out of the sky doing a few spins on the way down. The control throws even on low rates were more then adequete. Landings were smooth and gentle. Not sure why one would want to split the aileron into quad flaps but to each their own as I will keep it with full ailerons.. The rudder was more then adequate for decent ground handeling even with the tail skid. I really saw no need to convert it into a stearable tail wheel. The main gear wheels are a bit skinny and coupled with the light weight, it really didn't like taxing on the grass. Fater "Tundra" style tires might help that. The next few posts will be pics of the conversion. This is a full pic of the Mini Ultra Stik Conversion.

Looks good but my only thought is why don't they have a lens cover for the GoPro mount. Lens covers are approx. $20.00 for 3 lens covers at Best Buy. Would save your camera lens if landing in tall grass or maybe a random hit in some tree braches. Just an idea for a future upgrade.

RE: Electric Gee Bee
Well I have tried twice now to maiden her without success. Both times I had landing gear issues. With the first maiden the tail wheel ripped off while taxiing through the grass. This was no surprise to me as I knew the tiny tail wheel was going to cause issues. I should have just replaced it in the beginning. Having replaced the tail wheel with a larger more robust assembly I attempted the second maiden. This time I was having main gear issues. I plan on putting the project on hold for a few weeks and come back to it with a fresh outlook and see what can be done to get a successful maiden. Very frustrating. [:(]

RE: Mister E engine size?
My Gee Bee "Y" project has really close specs to yours. The original electric specs are: wing span 40" Wing area 306 square inches length 30" weight 32 oz I installed a OS .25 la w/ pitts style muffler and the weight is now 47 oz which gives me a wing loading around 22 oz/sq foot It's ready to maiden but the wind has not been cooperating. I now have 2 new planes to maiden (other one is electric Polaris with LEDs for night flying). Hopefully the wind will settle down today or tomorrow. When I get the maiden done will let you know how it performed.

RE: -> To My Fellow Converts <-
+1 on that statement. There are many reasons to do a conversion. In many instances a conversion is what makes the most sense to the one doing the conversion (even if nobody else understands this.) What I have found is that some are really easy and others are almost as difficult as doing a full kit. It's a challenge that not many are up to. Having good photo documentation on these conversions helps each other come up with some clever ideas and over come some of the obstacles one might encounter. I can't wait to see more conversion threads. Hopefully the mods will eventually give us more then one pic per post [;)]

RE: E Flite AT-6 Texan Convert to GLOW!
Awesome test as we all want to know the final results. On my Gee Bee "Y" I was initally worried they didn't use fuel proof paint on the wheel pants. I dabed some 15% Omega Pink on the bottom of the wheel pants and let it sit for 15+ mins without any paint "melting". At this point I also have some exhaust residue that had been sitting on it for about 36 hours without an issue. With Electric->Glow conversions of ARF's one never knows about this.

I bought this engine used from a fellow club member. He broke it in on a test stand and then it had one 5 min flight on it so it's basically new. I just ran 2 tank fulls in the yard to get it adjusted and make sure the inverted setup worked properly. I held it running pointed up, down, sideways, upside down etc.... all seems fine. We are a go for a maiden as long as the wind cooperates. If anybody else shows up at the field I will try to get an inflight pic or two.

RE: THE FIELD BOX FROM HELL! aka The Ultimate Field box!
Lets go ahead and revive this old thread because it's a good one. Read through this and it gave me some good ideas. I measured my car and measured some boxes. The good one I wanted wouldn't fit on the floor board behind the passenger seat. The ones that would were just not right. I won a $50 Home Depot gift card as a door prize so I decided to go there and make something work. This is what I came up with. It has my 12v battery, power panel, 1 gal fuel jug with electric pump, squirt bottle of cleaner, tools, some containers for small parts etc....... This allows me to just grab the field box, Tx and planes and I'm good to go without having to inventory everything to make sure I didn't forget anything. I've taken it to the field 3 or 4 times now and couldn't be happier.

RE: Electric Gee Bee
Since the remote needle valve is built into the back plate (on a OS .25 LA) I took off the backplate and turned it 180 degrees to keep the remote needle valve at the top. I did have to shave a little bit of one leg of the motor mount for needle valve clearance. Also the pitts style muffler I have has no offset so I had to grind off the raised lettering ("OS Max") on one side of the jug in order for the throttle push rod to have smooth movement. Here is the other side.

Defiantly an improvement compared to your initial runway. If you can get some of that overhang trimmed back it will only be an improvement. Takeoff shouldn't be bad. Landing well for a new pilot that might be a whole other issue.

Even if you would have gotten her in the air without incident you would have never landed between them trees. The field itself maybe OK but you need to come up with a better runway. I would look for a strip down one side that you can mow. I would have never even tried that and I have already crashed many a planes in a much more open area (much, much, much more open area)
