RE: High rpm 20cc motors
ORIGINAL: mrbigg Anyone know if the Mintor 22 is a little bit more powerful than the DLE 20?
i have had a run bothe DLE20 and the Mintor 22 - IMO the Mintor 22 has a very slight edge, BUT its still not designed for speed and high rpm, wouldnt like to see it over 9500 rpm. My Mintor has done in excess of 60 flights running at 9100rpm max but it porbably seldom did that on the 3d profile. changed now to a falcon carbon 17x6,5 and its waaaaay better.

RE: Rcexl Opto Kill Switch Question
ahicks only because i would never connect a CDI to the rx directly. yes you can be creative, but if you are getting the power of the rx bus anywhere it means you are directly connected the the rx bus. or am i missing something? it may be cheaper to connect direct to your rx, but a new rx and a new plane will cost a lot more than an IBEC. Like i say unless i am missing something here ? i'm always open to new ideas.....

RE: Rcexl Opto Kill Switch Question
ORIGINAL: ahicks I would put the regulator downstream from the switch - if I were going to use one. I'm on the diode plan BaracudaHockey is suggesting, but I buy the diodes at Radio Shack. I think there's 6 in the bag for less than 5.00, solder them up myself. That's where I run them... I know the IBECs have dropped in price, but the opto kill and diode work just as well, and are MUCH less money.
not necessarily, you are leaving out the fact that with an IBEC you can also leave out the ignition battery. add up the cost of a diode lead plus battery plus opto kill and your at probably the same costs as an ibec that has one or 2 extra features too.

they are not always heavier, i have ( and jodi has or did have :) ) a twin or 2 that easily pulls the same as any single cylinder and weighs the same too give or take a few grams. if only the manufacturer had been reliable, he'd be selling tons.

RE: DLE 15cc?
ORIGINAL: captinjohn Don,t know about how many smaller engines are in the works....but a smaller ignition is being developed...thats is all I can say. It was a promise................
how much smaller can they get and still be reliable i wonder. remember that the smaller they get the closer all the components inside the case are going to get. the downside here is on the high voltage side the spark will look for the easiest path to jump across? which may no longer be the spak plug gap. we also seem to want them to be HV capable, again the higher the input voltage gets the quicker it will look for a way out ? no doubt improvements can only be made through testing and the need for something new, so if something is being done great. I still dont see a problem with the igntions the way they are though. but i also dont fly warbirds with no room :)

RE: Mintor 33 conrod
it is not a conrod issue, but rather a crankpin problem. the good news is if you have bought one i can assure you that as you have a Mintor it is backed by one of the best there is. Mintor are already aware of this and have done testing on the current cranks - they have found that some of the heat treatment of the crankpins has had problems. they have resolved it, and already tested new crankpins with good success. anyone that has one that they suspect has a problem i would suggest you contact your local supplier and i am sure it will be sorted out. Mintor are notoriuos for great backup and I know this will be no different.

RE: Need Help DLE 30
ORIGINAL: BarracudaHockey And nix the 6.5 volts to the ignition.
+1 - no more than 6,0V volts i find works well. over that you run the risk of damaging the ignition. at higher voltages the spark is more likely to ground to earth outside the combustion chamber if it has any reason to. slightest damage to plug boot etc and it will spark outside the cylinder instead of at the plug. you may have damaged the ignition already.... try another at less than 6,0V and eliminate one item at a time.
ORIGINAL: AA5BY
ORIGINAL: w8ye 16:1 oil
Your answer raises a question. There is a notable performance loss between a 40:1 and 32:1 so how much more loss at 16:1?
performance loss between 32:1 and 40:1 ????????? maybe you just needed to retune it. there is no power loss at these sorts of oil ratios in fact it can even be argued you will gain power...... search for gordon jennings more is less less is more etc etc article. I have tested from 30:1 to 50:1 ratios and ended up now on always running 35:1 from run -in and always..... its a very debatable topic, but power loss is not a good argument...
ORIGINAL: geeter with all the problems with these small engines from china. why not get an os and avoid the problem in the first place. they just came out with a 22 cc gas engine. they cost alittle more but run very good. any engine less than 22 cc is not worth it anyway IMHO. if you can't offord nitro for a .40.50 maybe you shouldn't be flying. i like small gas engines but i think they have a limit. the weight of another battery pack plus the cdi is just not feasable to me. anything besides an xcell ignition is pretty much junk anyway. don't waste you time and money on junk gas engines, buy something good. besides you risk your plane and electronics to boot, just to save a few bucks.............GEETER
have you had an OS 22 that you know it runs so well? dont think so.... 5 years ago a light enough 22cc gasser was unheard of , today you have a choice. the 9cc engines will come........... nothing pees me off more when someone says if you cant afford X you shouldnt be flying at all. everyone is different but everyone is also entitled to fly what they want. where do you buy xcell ignitions that are so great? or are you referring rather to the RCEXL units i think....... for all the NGH problems and previous brand history, i give michael credit for at least thinking outside the box, if he pursues itwith the right testing prior to release he may just get it right

RE: Your list of hightest quality engines?
ORIGINAL: TimBle for this thread, what is the criteria for assessing quality? Build and looks? 1) Mintor 2) OS 3) MVVS Power? 1) MVVS 1) OS 3) Mintor 3)DLE 3)RCGF Reliability? 1) depends on tuning and set up, baffling and I belive in "have aprk, will fire" no winner here As for motor vehicles; International ratings place 1) VAG (Volkswaen AG group) 2) BMW AG 3) Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries) 4) Honda (Acura in US) 5) Toyota/Lexus at the top of the pile
agreed its about personal experience, and this even boils down to engine size. while brand x engine 100cc may be hugely powerful it does not mean every engine they make is by far the most powerful engine. my mintor 55 on cannister outpulls a local mvvs 58 by a long shot. BUT i am also running a good prop, the mvvs in my opinion is good, but has a poor prop choice on it..... too many a good engine is bad because of poor user setup..........

RE: sorry, can't keep my mouth shut about this
ORIGINAL: Truckracer I must admit the Mintor engines are interesting. Until better established in the marketplace, exhaust system choices will probably be somewhat limited. The stock mufflers look ...... well, strange and could be difficult to cowl. I wonder if they actually muffle? It is certainly a pretty engine though and well priced. As for 4 bolt or single bolt prop hubs .... I own and use both and really can't say either is any sort of issue for me. Both systems work. Overall, I'm just thankful for the choices we have.
the mintor exhausts are in no way difficult to fit in a cowl? not sure why you think they are. as for muffling. they are much better than other std dump mufflers. they are not thin sheet, but rather machinde from stock and therefore have a much nicer tone to them. as for muffelr choices, they are coming. profile mufflers for the 20cc will be available now.

RE: Carb tuning
ORIGINAL: Xairflyer When changing from 25:1 to 40:1 mix would I expect to have to richer my needles or lean them ? My own view would be to screw in the needles as less oil means more fuel which is a richer mix, but just want to check with you guys who have done it before
wouldnt say its a richer mix, but i guess more will be passing the needles so the engine is running 'richer' - less oil does mean a more viscous fuel. closing the needles will be required to reduce the flow rate with the 'thinner' fuel base. but you are right in saying closing the needles. do i even make sense :)

RE: How important/ critical is Prop Balancing?
ORIGINAL: Scota4570 Your props must be pretty close to start with. I have had some of the lower quality wood props, in the 20+ inch sizes be severly out of balance. Using CA or clear coat would not work. I ended up drilling a hole in the hub and adding a piece of 1/4" lead rod to make them balance. Basically how full sized props are balanced. Commonly found cheaper wood props from big retailers are the worst. Shipping them back is not an option due to shipping fees. Maybe someone can enlighten me? Using clear spray finish to balance a prop.... The solvent has weight. To get an accurate reading you would need to let the solvent evaporate. It seems to me it could take days to get the prop dialed in using spray finish.
yes it does take time as it has to be left till dry - however prop balancing is never a 5 minute job. i spray a coat each night, check the following night and add till its right. and yes the cheap props tend to be the worst. they do work, but the better ones work better :)

sorry but i agree with most responses....... I fly Mintor engines so do feel biased towards high end engines, i do know the difference. but one failure on a 111 doesnt mean they are junk. I have seen plenty doing hard work and giving hours of fun. plus the carb isnt even made by DLE and has nothing to do with the engine. I have seen brand new carbs, that just dont work out the box like they should. Golden rule, if it aint running right dont take -off. its a bit like jumping out a plane without a parachute and hoping your mate is going to free fall past and bring you a chute before the inevitable happens............ oh and i have seen high end engines trashed and running poorly too........... also to be told the engine is junk
