RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Jeff - there are bright & clever people who do things like the pics you showed, you who are always tinkering & experimenting & there's me! Like you said at your own pace - I'm really sloooooow. See the FP below. I'm still "struggling" with the blade holders, though! Ivan - I was out today & it was a bear! The wind started whipping down the driveway like crazy. The 2nd batt it was all I could do to keep it in the air tail in! Good practice though. I'm really sorry now I decided to wait until spring for more batts! You bet I'll be out over weekend if the wind isn't too bad. Gary - I like the idea of the Tx bag but I knida' thought there would be problems with the sticks. If I can find some gloves that keep my fingers warm & let me "feel" the sticks I'd buy a pair. I thought about nicking the pair of white cotton ones I used as pall bearer last week but they took them away from me! Ya, I'm sick, I know.... Gary - Good news about the planes flying! Glad to hear the ACT worked. I saw the P51D & almost bought it yesterday!!! I realized by the time it got here there would be snow on the ground - another spring project. Dave - good job on the skill set! I'm still working on side orientation. It's easier with the well tuned 450 than the FP (except Gary's of course!). I've been using the msR in the house but it's almost too easy. I can even do some nose in with that. I've been trying to do some circles but that ain't going too well, good thing the msR is 1 tuff little heli. After the heli, I ran 2 packs thru the Losi in the street out front - way cool & STILL no broken parts. lol Chuck

RE: Losi 1/18 mini desert buggy
Wow, I just took it out on the street & used both new Fusion batts to pretty much exhaustion - prob too much, but I'll learn. Gotta' get a 2nd charger now that I got 3 batts! The 1st batt was charged with the stock charger for about 6 hrs. It was OK, at least as good as the stock batt. Then I put the 2nd batt in charged with the Turnigy Accucell 6 with peak detect. Holy Cow - it went like a bat outta' h3ll! It ran a good long time, I didn't try any throttle management just drove however I felt though there were a lot of full speed runs down 5 or 6 houses away in the middle of the street & back. Way fun. Still gotta' get over to the school & try the infield. Jumpin' curbs & runnin' thru the grass was OK though! So anybody - what do the spacers do that came with the buggy? Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Ouch, Uncle Jeff! You really took the strap to my hide!! LOL I cut & pasted both previous posts & printed them out to read again. I'll get back to you, bud!!!! lol Wow, I didn't know they still made Weller soldering guns. I've got 2 that are at least 30 yrs old. One is a "2 speed" with twin "headlights" - real deluxe. So far I haven't felt the need for anything that big. I use a smaller iron for everything. [Clean tip, tinned wire, a touch of solder on the tip, solder between the tip & the piece & you should be good to go, Eddie!] Thanks for the tip you gave somebody about watching the tail for nose in. I didn't quite do that but I stopped watching the main shaft & I improved immediately! Got some tens of seconds side in - both sides even!!! As soon as I got the Losi buggy & started a thread on it, somebody told me to get turnbuckles to make life easier. IMMEDIATELY, I thought Y-O-Y didn't the helis have those??? Randy - man I feel for you, I'm on furlough today. Every day I show up to work I expect to see chains on the doors! Not a very pleasant way to live! Gary sent me a set of blades but I've been having trouble getting them to work right on the Walkera (4-1 & 4G1a) blade holders. I think I've got all the bugs out now with some very good suggestions from him & need to test but like you the mood is hard to come by! Hang in there man!!! Ivan - PLEASE HELP ME OUT HERE!!!! Tell them how important setup is!!!!! You guys.... lmao Wind looks fairly reaonable & the temp went up, sooo may have to take the 450 outside for a bit. Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Dave - I'm not sure if anybody mentioned Loctite! Must have. I've talked to Gary (SuperSkids) & Ivan (9sec240) a lot about setups & they are both convinced that it is critical to get it "right" to fly well & it makes it easier (I can attest to that 1st hand!). I don't mean to speak for them. but they've convinced me! Now if I could just figure out how to do it! Good luck. The 450 is something else to fly & GREAT FUN. If you can fly the FP pretty well, the move to the 450 should be smooth! Did you ever manage FFF with the FP? To see what I mean watch this vid. I'd kill to get my 300 to fly that well. Ivan - welcome back. Nobody but you could have pulled off the rebuild in such a short time! Congrats on the wins! Randy - did you ever try the SuperBlades? If so, how did you like them? Chuck

RE: Losi 1/18 mini desert buggy
grendel - what exactly do you like on the 3racing shocks that the others didn't have? I'll have to decide soon. I've got a similar charger. What current are you charging the stock batt at? I finally figured out how to AUT the NiMH part! I want to drive the buggy stock for a while before I go bling crazy. Interesting about the neighborhood kids - a taser should do it! There is an AUX chan on the RX, I'll bet there's a way to activate it! mini - thanks for the contribution! I understand where you're coming from. I "used" to do all that stuff. Now I just want to drive (or fly or hover!). I know I can do all that stuff but why?? Just sayin' Guess that's what makes this hobby grand. I really appreciate guys like you though who do all these wild & crazy things & then take the time to share it with those of less gifted like me! Fusion batt report: I thought it was tough getting the stock batt in, it was a piece of cake compared to the Fusion. It's a couple of mm wider than the stock. You have to cock it slightly to slide it in. Eventually I took out "Helmet Man" to make it easier. The ON/OFF switch came offduring this as it was only glued on the side of the ESC. Part of the problem is the wires keep getting in the way (besides Helmet Man). Some day I'll pull all the electronics out & sort it all out. I'm not crazy about leaving the batt in to charge it. I can't report much on performance yet as I was restricted to the cluttered basement floor & low speed turns & moderately fast but very short straight aways. But boy can you do some nice spin outs on the slick surface! Guess I better go buy a bic lighter! LOL Chuck

Why would I want to use the spring spacers provided with the car to make them stiffer??? My son-in-law was visiting today & he has never touched an RC car before - he made it do things I didn't think were possible! He also beat the cr@p out of it, lots of scarring but no broken parts. RE: Losi 1/18 mini desert buggy
Hey mini-dude. That didn't take long. Thanks for the tip, I'll look over there as well. But I'll bet it's 200 pages long & would take me a year to read! I think this will be very FUN! I played around with trying to get the batt in for about ten minutes. I finally removed one of the side panels & found that they had tie wrapped one of the cables to the Rx real short & the batt tray wouldn't move high enough. Had a heck of a time getting the body clip back into the peg - fat fingers I guess! Not a real user friendly design, though I understand better the bigger ones are probably easier to work on. WOW - there isn't much movement on the steering wheel on the Tx - that was a shock! I noticed one of the front wheels was out of alignment with the other. I remember reading in the maunal some where about adjusting the toe-in or camber or .... See pic. That will have to wait until tomorrow. I need to scoot this thing around the front room! Chuck

jeff - thanks for watching the vid. I realize now I should get a hat cam (like Scott is saying too) 'cuz it was hard to see it sliding from side to side & the side in hovers! (She hates that nickname BTW but I'm such a tease!). Too bad I'm ready to pack the 450 away for the winter as another week or 2 or 3 & I was feeling it would be time to walk down by the school to stretch the blades a bit, SIGH, spring is coming! But the 1/18 dune buggy should be here this week. A little something to run in the snow maybe..... lol Eddie - I could have sworn that upside down fish wasn't a cat. I went back & looked closer.... While they cost a bit more than Hobby City, Gary at SuperSkids has some 3S 18C 850mAH batts that I've been using & abusing on the FP since last Xmas. They are real high quality & might fit the 250. There wasn't a claer pic of the batt holder in that ad on ebay. Chuck

Eddie - what is the non-catfish fish? I thought I knew most feshwater species. I need to get out there before the water gets "hard"! Jeff - thought you'd like to see an update. Of course, between me deciding to do it & getting the camera & movie maker outside the wind seemed to about quadruple in speed! Or maybe it was my imagination or the camera or my fingers getting stiff again!!!! Take your pick. It doesn't look like much but I'm feeling better about my flying. lmao The rains have stopped for the moment & the sun is actually is out. Too bad I only have 2 batts for th 450. I need to talk to Santa about another pair & a 2nd charger. Do you guys who live in areas with "real' winters do anything to "winterize" your helis before storage? It won't be long before the 450 will need to be packed away & I was wondering if there is anything I need to do (besides the batt in storage state) for long term storage? Chuck

shane - if Randy's not around I have the same charger & been using it awhile. I'd be glad to help if I can! It's mostly "idiot" proof with the default settings! I hope you bought the "6S" adapter so you can charge 2 x 3S at once. Ivan - I don't have the original Tx any more as they sent a new one last time I sent it in for repair! I just remembered you're going to be gone for weeks - heligod forbid I crash while your away! Can Ikea fix helis yet???? lol Have a safe & winning trip. Send photos & vids when you can. Enjoy all that d@mn sunshine & warmth. Gary - Now that you mention those sensors, the "bad" stuff was about them & how they can get confused sometimes depending on the lighting or clouds or something. SO BE CAREFUL with you son's present!!! I put 4 batts thru the msR (raining AGAIN & all day tomorrow on my day off!), it's not the 450 but I started on nose in tonight what a b#tch! Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Jeff - yea I've doing that putting it out before I fly. I noticed at Ivan's the tail would drift after we went outside to try the latest adjustments. I was wondering though if it wouldn't be worth powering on the heli too to warm the rest of the electrics? I haven't tried that because I had also heard the lipos didn't like the cold. Though cold is relative - right now 50°F feels cold, 2 months from now it will be a heat wave! baurwin - I am truly amazed at your talent for destruction!! My msR just keeps going & going & going.. no matter what I've done to it - even still trying to do baurwin 8's!! Maybe I'm not trying hard enough. lol Gary - good to hear things are going well. I've been looking at the SuperSkids400 with boosters as I keep landing tail heavy & scrape the tail blades. I looked at that version of the Cub & almost bought it. I read the ACT was marginally useful at best but I never tried it. I put my Cub to bed for the winter. Ivan - Good luck reducing your fleet. I'm tempted to pick up one of the 450's...... Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Hey AndyW, welcome! I got an Air Hogs as an Xmas gag gift. Got hooked & found the 4#3 - nice & small for indoors. I sold it a few months ago afte 16 months of it NEVER coming off the floor! I bought the msR a couple of weeks ago & I'm having fun learning orientation. I also bought a sim (FSOne) & while not REAL life the TRex in it is not bad compared to my EXI450 in real life for HOVERING. That's all I can do so far. Between the msR & sim I'm hoping next spreing I'll be ready to try baurwin 8s! Ivan - the neck strap adapter I got would not fit on the 6i physically at all. Once i hung it from the strap alone it balanced nicely without it! And I got my money back! I'm guessing Spektrum did something to the Tx or adapter! Randy - I hope you used that alchohol hand cleaner after you touched the Align THING! lol Jeff - I think I like the idea of fingerless gloves you mentioned once, I might try that. The batts were ambient after flight I almost couldn't tell which was the fresh one it was so cold! Ohhhhh, the maintenance guy at worked stopped me in the hall to ask if I was still flying helis! He has his eye on a 450 scale at the lhs. He has an AIr Hog now. Boy, I gave him an ear full! I hope I didn't scare him away! I didn't tell him about you guys - yet! lol Chuck

You guys must not eat or sleep! Went out today after work & about 1/2 way thru the 2nd pack I noticed the 450 was "jumpy", real eradict, not smooth. Put it down to see what going on & realized my thumbs were stiff from the cold & damp! It's h3ll gettin' on. As far as the Spektrum neck strap adapter goes: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8355008/anchors_8355008/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#8355008]Specktrum Neck Strap Adapter[/link] I like the strap but keep forgetting to use it. The DX7 is thinner (tried Ivan's) & I might be able to pinch the sticks but for sure with the DX6i I need a good grip on it! Horizon Hobby is now with Phoenix - it appears they dropped the FSOne sim. They have a deal w/Phoenix & the DX5e. [link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=RTM25R5500]Phoenix&HH[/link] Chuck

Sounds like NOT a good idea for me, you probably low risk.... Hey guys! I have a 10% coupon for Horizon Hobby that expires on Saturday (31OCT09). Jeff - what heli was that manual for a couple of pages back? It had an interesting remark about 2 o-rings for 3D & 1 for good control(?). Would that apply to my 450?? I'd much rather have good control than be upside down! phillyD & dunkonu23 - thanks for the explanation on blade tracking & head setup. Good stuff - I'll be needing all that soon. Hi Shane - looks like you woke soloboss up from hibernation! Thanks. Mark - please come back - these guys are struggling on another planet! I need somebody at my level to talk to!! Glad to hear the job is going well. Find a couple of bucks & try the msR - almost industructable, flyable, & helping me with my orientation! Plus it's small enough for the cramped living room & most important FUN to fly. Ivan - good vids, so that's what I'm supposed to do after I learn how to hover!!!!!!!!! Great thanks! lol You guys with the 250's - would it be safe & sensible to fly one indoors (front room again!) or is it just a small version of the 450 with crazy head speed & potential for mass destruction? One of you guys that know soloboss well should go get him so he can do post #10,000! Ivan - remind me next year when it's time again for iHobby Expo. I'm sorry I couldn't go this year but I wanted the 450 flying again. After my weekend chores the wind dropped to ZERO! Ran in the house got the 450 & my 2 packs (I gotta' get a couple of more!) and flew. I was tempted to go down to the school but realized I wasn't ready for that yet & I'm a BIG wussss! But I did go down to the end of the drive & did some moving around & got a lot of side hovering in. Almost decided to pull a piro but chickened out - too many trees. (just put back 1780 in the batts). It started to rain just as the timer went off. About an hour later I look out - no ran, no wind no batts! Hey wait I got the 4-1 FP & I have never tried to stretch it out. What a great time to try. Back outside & a little side hovering & a little FF across the street & back & a couple of piros - man did I miss the locked tail on the 450! Ran 2 packs though it & the rains came again. All in all a good flying day! Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Jeff & Bill - ya it moves about an 1/8" side to side. Since you guys have no movement I figure not good! Took the heli into the shop. Took the screw out of the blade holder but the holder doesn't side off! So I grab the gas pliers on one end & stick a bent flybar in the other & yank with all my might & it finally comes apart. I have no idea why it stuck! Looking at the pieces I still don't know why it wouldn't come off! Put on a new feathering shaft & the original washer, slide on the blade grips, put it all back together & then outside for a test drive. Except for the wind whipping it around flies pretty good. I almost went to the iHobby Expo but decided I'd better fix the heli I have before I buy any more! 600 exhibitors, maybe next year because it sounded good. Ivan - I got one pack in today but it was late morning before I got the heli flying, missed the calm window this morning - darn! I like the new signature... Chuck

For a lark we tried one last thing, wiggled the throttle trim lever - problem solved - flaky throttle pot! I haven't decided to send the Tx back or not yet but they gave me that option. It works almost all the time now. Thanks again for all the good stuff here - especially the TRex fixes - flies (OK hovers - I don't fly YET) almost like my EXI 450 now! Hey monsterbrad! The Blade 400 isn't a fixed pitch, it's a CCPM heli. I have the EXI 450 (CCPM) coming from a 300 class Walkera FP, coming from a CX2 & I've been flying the msR for a couple of weeks. It was quite a leap for me going from the CX2 to the FP. It was easier going from the FP to the 450. Mind you I'm still only hovering around on all of them. These guys should be able to tell you more. Some think sims help, some don't. It helped me with my airplane but not the helis, though I was using FMS (free) back then. I Just got FSOne & still tweaking it so it's too soon to tell but I think it will help with the helis! Just make sure you've got a healthy heli budget! Chuck

Jeff - what kinda' wax are you using? I'll give you "old timer"!!!! lol Thanks for the advice & encouragement. I need to get my mindset around the fixing part of this hobby! eddie - thanks for the vid. It was educational. I put my 450 on the desk & tried moving my stuff around while watching it! Only the mid section moved almost as much as yours (the only plastic stuff on my EXI head). the rest looked pretty tight. How about blade holder movement side to side? I noticed mine slides in & out a bit (don't have a scale here to measure 2-3mm???) How much is acceptable? Ran a pack thru the 450 in the drive again - frikin cold outside! It didn't feel right so after the 1 batt & I shut it down & went back in (to warm my OLD bones)! Called HZ about FSOne problem I was having - he thinks it's the Tx (the one that comes with the program)! Would you believe that? It must be me & Txs!! Have a good one. Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
jeff, I almost bought 1 of that type (powered glider) but at the time I said no more Txs! So I got the Cub so I could put the Spektrum Rx in & which I just packed away for the winter. (very sad!) Nice vid of the Aero flight. Looks like a fun bird. My next one will have ailerons & rudder to see how that flies, maybe next year summertime. Oh, I resisted the urge & didn't buy the Losi truck, plus a little low on hobby funds at the moment so I had to make a choice - heli parts or new car... the heli won (for now!). Ivan - even as windy as it was this afternoon, I put 2 packs thru the 450. Since we changed soooo many things I kept it simple, tail in hover & a little front & back up & down the driveway. I aslo let it drift up pretty high to see what that was like with the wind. Works pretty well - sweaty palms & all. Still not sure about the weights, though - they're on for now but I'll see. I've put a lot of packs thru the msR in the last 2 weeks - 1 pack just orientation, but the 2nd pack I let myself get a little goofy & tear around the room trying all kindsa' stuff. I think it's helping... I'm still waiting for the 4 new batts from China - taking forever... so I can get more stick time. Today I put the FP back in the air & it was pretty unsteady. I took it into the workshop & went over it pretty good but it's still not right. Might have order some blades from Gary & see it that helps. Or I might put back the stock head & see if that helps. Wow, Air Hogs was my 1st heli (gag Xmas present) & got me interested in RC again after ~30 yrs away. As everybody here knows I'm struggling big time. The CX2 saved me from jumping back to tamer hobbies & guys like Dave & Gary encouragement & help kept the spirits up in the real early days. As Ivan can tell you, I'm not much of a mechanic so that part of this hobby is really frustrating for me as my fear of fixing keeps me from trying much stuff. Not sure what would have been the best route for me to learn (well what little I can do! LOL) I just know I wasted a lot of time & a boat load of money until I found the forums! I agree with Bill & phillyD, I was trying to keep up with you guys & there's no way I can or should. I gotta' figure my own pace. I almost jumped ship a couple of weeks ago myself, but I'm all better now! The msR is fun but limiting, I gotta' get some time on the sim & Ivan once again got my 450 flyin' - I really missed the knot in the stomach as that puppy spooled up! Of course, it's almost dark when I get home now so weekends only soon! Though that gasser sounded pretty good! And I think maybe one of these is in my future! Have a good evening (Thanks, Ivan!). RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hey Scott. Sorry I didn't respond sooner but I told the forum to notify me for a reply & I never got one! Since I know this forum isn't very active any more I don't check it regularly. I have the latest updates (1.1). I believe I followed the instructions (I'm one of those that actually read the manual - I was sorely disappointed there wasn't one w/ this software!). But being a frail human being subject to mistakes, I will try again & really concentrate on the instructions. I remember you saying this before in the early part of this forum so I thought I was. But hey... Thanks for the response. I'm going to go try right it again now! Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
And if it wasn't for me, Ivan would have had a vid of the Pro flying already. Instead of building it, he helped me find all the damage I missed on my repair job. Hey, he even put some of that shiny orange tape on my new wood blades - looked great - can't wait to fly again! Hopefully w/o the flopping over on the ground thing this time! Jeff - I took out the idler wheel out of the new aluminum tail except I left the screw in. I didn't notice it rubbing but it doesn't matter 'cuz when Ivan spooled up the heli it fell out. lol I gotta' get some better thread lock! Gary - how goes the blade sales, it's been a couple of weeks now. Still strong I hope! Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
Hey Ivan - Dumb question = Did you ever replace the motor? That seems to be the only thing left! And here I was feeling bad last night when I did my final tail check & fired up the main motor (still no blades yet) & got upset because the tail was spinning backwards because I put the belt on backwards! Jeff - I know you keep mentioning you've never had an FP heli. Here's your chance, comes with everyting for 90 bucks! [link=http://www.xheli.com/2-4ghz-exceed-rc-falcon-40.html]Falcon 40[/link]. I almost bought this one 2 years ago (pre 2.4Ghz & pre-LiPo) Chuck

RE: FS One by Hangar 9
Hey guys! I've been kinda' busy crashing & trying to fix my real heli but finally got time to use it some. However, every time I start it up I have to re-calibrate the Tx (Tac-Con). This is true for both the Trex & Cub J3. Am I missing something? It's very annoying to have to do this.... The Cub flies almost like my real one, it will help. I've only done part of the Trex changes (the last one first). That tamed it pretty good, almost flies like the EXI 450. Any idea about the cal thing would be appreciated. Chuck

RE: Struggling with Single Rotor basics
I worked on the heli some more today (it flipped on the ground just as I gave it + pitch to lift off in idle up). After I replaced the main gear & flybar, I spooled it up on the floor (no blades) & noticed the tail didn't look quite right. Bent boom, broken boom support. So OK I can fix this I have a whole spare heli! Taking off the tail I noticed the blades were damaged as well as the holders. OK I got a spare. Except the spare plastic tail was cr@p! Stiff & "sticky". So I dug out the EXI aluminum one I bought for a lark 'cuz is was sooo "SHINY". Looks nice, acts mostly nice, I'll see. The aluminum one is slightly shorter then the plastic one so I have to move the servo except now it doesn't line up with the push rod. Need to figure out what to do with that. It's also heavier & I'm sure I'll have to play with the CG now too. I also noticed a slight "wobble" in the head at low speed (no blades just flybar & paddles). So I'm thinking maybe more damage.... Not sure what to look for there, probably need to talk to MR G.Wrench about that! Jeff - I went to boot camp in San Diego ("Hollywood" Marines is what they called us!) & the drill instructors used to tell us stories about the "squids" on the other side of the fence!! They weren't very nice stories but I'm also sure they weren't true!!! LOL I went back there 2 years ago to see the place - very strange & mixed feelings seeing it again after all these years! "Once a Marine, always a Marine! Gung Ho!" brog - +1 on Gary, I've been dealing with him for a long time (2 years in this hobby sure SEEMS like a long time). He is what service is defined as! Plus those skids are still taking a beating on the Walkera FP & are just fine! I'll be putting them on the 450 one of these days. Yea I gotta' join AMA too - good thing the grass cutter lady didn't ask for my AMA card at the field today or I would have been in big trouble! Chuck
